The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." "Transparent" and "Silicon Valley" are also up for Comedy Series, going against "Louie," "Veep" and "Orange Is The New Black." Lest you panic...

Crime has a new enemy, and justice has a brand new face. Fans of visionary director Sam Raimi (The Spider-Man trilogy) know well the story of Dr. Peyton Westlake and his tragic transformation into the action hero known as Darkman. Based on Raimi’s short story “The Darkman,” the popular crime-fighting master of disguises comes to life in the 1990 film adaptation Darkman, starring three-time Golden Globe® nominee Liam Neeson (Taken) and Oscar® winner Frances McDormand (Fargo). Directed by Sam Raimi, this explosive, action-packed thriller also stars Colin Friels (Dark City), Larry Drake (Dr. Giggles), Dan Hicks (Evil Dead 2) and Nicholas Worth (Swamp Thing) and features soundtrack by award-wining composer Danny Elfman. On February 18, 2014, Scream Factory™ will release Darkman Collector’S Edition Blu-ray, featuring all-new interviews with Liam Neeson, Frances McDormand, Larry Drake, Danny Hicks, make-up effects artist Tony Gardner, production designer Randy Ser, art director Philip Dagort and much more!

If the Gold Rush intrigues you and the work of Jack London has long held a special place in your heart, then the Discovery Channel’s new project may be of particular interest to you. The network is planning to deliver Klondike, its first original scripted program, which comes in the form of a six-hour miniseries. Just don’t ask any of the actors what they would do for a Klondike bar.
The miniseries is based upon author Charlotte Gray’s novel entitled Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich In The Klondike. It will tell the story of six strangers as they grapple to acquire fortune and to just plain survive in the harsh frontier of the Klondike located in the Yukon territory.
According to Deadline, a solid cast has been developed. From Game Of Thrones comes Richard Madden, Augustus Prew of Charlie St. Cloud, Robocop‘s Abbie Cornish, Luck‘s Ian Hart,...

Exclusive: Discovery Channel is putting the finishing touches on the cast for its first original scripted program, six-hour miniseries Klondike. I’ve learned that Game Of Thrones‘ Richard Madden, Augustus Prew (Charlie St. Cloud), Abbie Cornish (RoboCop), Ian Hart (Luck), Johnny Simmons (The Perks Of Being A Wallflower), Connor Leslie (Chained), Tim Roth and Tim Blake Nelson are set or in negotiations to join Chris Cooper in the project, produced by Scott Free Prods., Discovery Entertainment One and Nomadic Pictures. Assembling a cast of established actors for Klondike was important for Discovery as it enters the scripted arena. Based on Charlotte Gray’s novel Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich In The Klondike, the mini tells the story of six strangers and their collective fight for survival and wealth in a small, frontier town in the remote Klondike. Directed by Simon Cellan Jones from a script by Paul Scheuring, Josh Goldin and Rachel Abramowitz,...

With their Nashville pilot Outlaw Country heating up for a series pickup at FX, Josh Goldin and Rachel Abramowitz have sold a second drama project to NBC. The legal drama, titled Major Crimes, hails from Sony Pictures TV and producer Michael London (Milk), who is executive producing through his Groundswell Prods. Described as “ER in the La prosecutor’s office,” Major Crimes is set in the world of young ADAs in a Los Angeles downtown court building. Moving at a bullet pace, the show focuses on an ensemble cast of massively overworked ADAs falling in love, battling their own demons and ambitions, while seeking out justice on the run. Goldin and Abramowitz are co-writing/executive producing the project, which came out of the extensive research the two did in the court offices in downtown La. Major Crimes joins two other recently announced Groundswell series projects: A Visit From The Goon Squad...

FX's pilot Outlaw Country is undergoing a retooling. The original script, written by Josh Goldin and Rachel Abramowitz, has been given a rewrite by Goldin, Abramowitz and Outlaw Country's executive producer/co-showrunner David Manson. There will be substantial reshoots, which will be directed by actor-helmer Adam Arkin. Arkin is stepping in for the original pilot's director Michael Dinner, who would've done the reshoots had he not been busy with another FX pilot he is directing, Powers. There won't be major recastings on the project, a crime thriller/family drama set against the backdrop of Southern organized crime and Nashville royalty that stars Luke Grimes, Haley Bennett, Mary Steenburgen and John Hawkes. I hear a couple of small new roles have been added and another small part, played in the original pilot by Lisa Blount, will be recast following the actress' death. Getting Outlaw Country off the ground has been a long and arduous process.

Before director Sam Raimi swung on a web with Spider-Man, he brought his own super-hero to the big screen with Darkman. The 1990 film looks solid on Blu-ray.s 1080p format, but some of the effects are a tad dated. Written by Raimi, Chuck Pfarrer, Ivan Raimi, Daniel Goldin, and Joshua Goldin, Darkman starred Liam Neeson (who had yet to become the blockbuster star he is today), Frances McDormand (in her pre-Fargo days), Larry Drake, and Colin Friels. The movie also benefited from a super heroic music from Danny Elfman. The movie was a pretty straight-forward origin tale with Neeson taking on the role of Dr. Peyton Westlake . a scientist working on a synthetic skin for burn victims.

A few months ago, I wrote a rather glowing review for what I'd hoped was Robin Williams' career revival, World's Greatest Dad. Now, a film exists that could be the equivalent for Matthew Broderick. It's been a long time since Broderick has seen any serious film success. His conversion of the hit Broadway show The Producers to the screen (though it wasn't the first time), with Nathan Lane, Uma Thurman, and Will Ferrell as co-stars, didn't do nearly as well as its theater run would have predicted, which was a shame as the show marked a new highlight in Broderick's career after a disappointing lead-in of films. But now, the man we love as the carefree, risk-it-all Ferris Bueller, takes on the exact opposite demeanor in what just might be his most memorable film since he took a day off. Wonderful World is the tale of an eternal pessimist...

Wonderful World (2010) is a thoughtful film. Writer/director Joshua Goldin has crafted a genuine character study with all of the key elements necessary to tell a good story. He combines drama, romance, comedy, and spiritual inner conflict to uncover the more compelling aspects of our universal human plight. The film revolves around lead character Ben Singer, played by Matthew Broderick. Ben is broken. He has turned to cynicism and pessimism to make sense of life. As a failed folk singer and weekend dad who self-medicates with marijuana, he has but one pleasure, playing chess with his friend and room mate Ibu, played by Kenneth Williams. When his Senegalese chess partner takes ill and falls into a coma, Ben Singer is suddenly without his safety net. Or so he thinks. Enter Ibu's sister Khadi, played by Sanaa Lathan, who arrives from Senegal to be at her brother's side. Khadi moves in with Ben during Ibu's recovery,...

According to a detailed manifesto on its website, the Oxford Film Festival began in 2003 "as a project of the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council... committed to celebrating the art of independent cinema." What the festival actually is, however, is so much more: a four-day celebration where filmmakers, industry professionals, critics, and cinephiles gather together, get to know one another, and share in a community's collective appreciation for film in all of its forms. Cozily entrenched in the businesses and residences of Oxford, Mississippi, the town that the picturesque college Ole Miss calls home, Off is a modest, maturing sibling of mainstay festivals like Sundance and South By Southwest whose smalltown charm bypasses superficial spectacle in favor of more substantial rewards.
The festival runs four days and features more than 80 different offerings, including narrative features, documentaries, short films, animated works, and experimental projects. I was enlisted at the last minute to serve as...

The Education Of Matthew Broderick

If you visit Pajiba on a fairly regular basis, you probably get the idea that we piss and moan, bitch and complain a lot. That we're assholes. Or worse: Pretentious assholes. Or geeky assholes. Or elitist assholes. I don't know why we're that way, or what led us to this point. It's easier to fit in, I suppose, if you're an asshole. But that asshole part of us is only superficial. It's an identity ice-breaker, if you will. Show them your asshole (figuratively!), before you reveal your true self. It's probably part of the nerd/geek/dork/arthouse enthusiast handbook. You reveal too much of yourself too early on, and you're bound to get burned. Mocked. Humiliated. Alienated.

One month, 280 films and 70,000 words later, my guide to the films of 2010 is now complete. If you have liked it, my only request is that you help spread the word about it now that it's all done.
If you're a fellow blogger or site owner, please give it a plug on your site. If you're a reader, give it a mention on Facebook, Twitter or other online places you might venture. A lot of effort went into this, the greatest reward so far has been seeing it talked about and hearing your reactions. There's something so wholesome and reassuringly American about Matthew Broderick that it's no surprise he pops the most in roles that let him play against it. Whether it's the subversive streak he brought to Ferris Bueller's Day Off or the more venal elements of his character in Election, Broderick's nice-guy persona lets him get away with things that other actors would be unsympathetic doing. His latest addition to the rogues gallery is pot-smoking misanthrope Ben in his friend Josh Goldin's Wonderful World, who's relentlessly pessimistic until he falls for an upbeat immigrant (Sanaa Lathan).
I spoke to Broderick today at the Standard in Los Angeles, where the 47-year-old actor opened up about the way he sees the world, his relationship with Ferris director John Hughes before he passed away, and the thorny case of Kenneth Lonergan's eternally-delayed Margaret.

The most expressive feature of Matthew Broderick’s character in Wonderful World is his facial hair, a permanent 5 o’clock shadow that suggests a man who can barely bring himself to get up in the morning, much less to shave. The movie could be called a journey to Gillette, and it’s an agonizing one at that, a paint-by-numbers tale of redemption for a man whose wounds are mostly self-inflicted. Playing the latest in a long line of world-weary schlubs, Broderick evinces sympathy where other actors might not, and writer-director Joshua Goldin certainly has his heart in the right ...

Still boyishly handsome at 47, actor Matthew Broderick ("The Producers," "Election," and, lest anyone forget, "Ferris Bueller's Day Off") continues to split his workload between stage and screen. In the last few years, however, his film career has been more low-key, from voiceover work ("Bee Movie," "The Tale of Despereaux") to indies like "Then She Found Me," "Diminished Capacity" and "Finding Amanda." Could it be that "Inspector Gadget" himself no longer finds Hollywood roles as satisfying to the soul?
His next stop in Indiewood is writer-director Josh Goldin's bittersweet debut "Wonderful World," which premiered at last year's Tribeca Film Festival. The beginning of a new year and a new decade brings hope and optimism for change, and while there's a lot of good things in the world, there's still plenty of reasons to be down and negative and cynical. So he blew off the first couple of phone messages from representatives of writer-director Joshua Goldin about the film Wonderful World, which opens Friday (1/8/10). It was only when Goldin himself reached Williams that the Brooklyn-born actor figured something might actually be up. Then Josh called me back a few times and said he wanted me. So I went in." In Wonderful World, Williams plays Ibou, Broderick's roommate, a Senegalese immigrant to whom the unhappily divorced Broderick regularly loses at chess. When Ibou suffers a...

Williams, Jodelle Ferland, Philip Baker Hall, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Patrick Carney, Ally Walker, Zacharias Foppe, Christy Reese, Cristen Barnes, Mia Ford, Paul T. Taylor, James Burton and John Hambrick. Broderick plays Ben Singer, a failed children's folk singer, a career proofreader, a compulsive marijuana smoker, and a less-than-extraordinary weekend dad. He's also the most negative man alive. Floundering in all aspects of his life, Ben's only comfort comes from regular chess games and friendly debates on game theory with his Senegalese roommate Ibou (Williams). When Ibou is suddenly struck ill, and an insensitive municipal...

I don't know how Matthew Broderick lost all of his star power, but he's showing up in a lot of new indies recently. I still love the guy, but it's a little odd seeing him in so many of these. Apple recently debuted the trailer for Joshua Goldin's Wonderful World starring Matthew Broderick, Jodelle Ferland, and Michael K. Williams. It looks like a combination of The Visitor and Brothers, where an apathetic guy gets a taste of culture from a new housemate and starts to fall in love with her, too. It doesn't look bad, but it doesn't look that great either. I may check it out, because I like Broderick, but I'm not sure. What do you guys think? Cinematical has just received the official poster for Matthew Broderick's sharpie-smiled Wonderful World. It's been a good two years since the actor signed on to the project, which was then simply described as a movie that "centers on a depressed, divorced, and unemployed father who finds solace in his Senegalese roommate's sister." That now sounds as telling of the story as saying The Lord of the Rings is about a journey to play a fiery game of ring toss.
The directorial debut of writer Joshua Goldin, this feature also marks a reunion with Broderick, who starred in his 1992 script, Out on a Limb. But this flick sounds like it will be even further out on that limb, making Broderick's stint in Election sound like your Average Joe kinda day:

One week into the Tribeca Film Festival (Tff) and the screenings keep humming along. It's probably a softer buzz than previous years; some attendees have even dared to take a night or two off to care for other, personal matters (like sleep) -- something you'd never hear about at Sundance, Cannes, or Toronto. Perhaps that's a consequence of the festival being held in such a costly city: very expensive for out-of-towners to cover, and locals can't get away from their personal lives the same as when they're traveling.
Scene. Steven Soderbergh's The Girlfriend Experience premiered on Tuesday evening (the post-screening party featured chocolate-covered bacon), and tonight Soderbergh and star Sasha Grey shared a panel to discuss the film. Eric Bana made an appearance in support of Love the Beast, a documentary he directed about his favorite car, and Zachary Quinto chatted with him at a party in the East Village.

The red carpet for ”Wonderful World” was truly a wonderful experience. Not only was everyone excited to be there to celebrate the premiere of the film, but to support their friends as well. Dan Zanes gives a quick overview of the film and then director Joshua Goldin talks about Matthew Broderick’s superb acting skills. Sanaa Lathan, whose character winds up living with Broderick’s in the film, talks about how he takes his work very seriously but is always fun to be on set with. Broderick wasn’t the only person being showered with compliments. Sanaa had a good friend on the carpet to bring her support, Kim Kardashian. I didn’t speak with Broderick, but his wife, Sarah Jessica Parker, expressed her pleasure in coming out to support him before heading into the theater. You can check out the Jeffrey’s interview with Broderick by clicking here.

Matthew Broderick may portray a pessimistic bachelor in his new film, Wonderful World, but at the film's premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival Monday the actor played a role he is used to - adoring husband. "Doesn't she look beautiful?" Broderick gushed, holding the hand of his wife, Sarah Jessica Parker, 44, who arrived at the premiere Monday night in a skintight dress and sequined Christian Louboutin shoes. "I am so happy to be here tonight with her. We are having a great time." Broderick, 47, was also fashionably attired - but for another era. Sporting thick sideburns for his current Broadway play,...

Matthew Broderick's world sure is wonderful. Everyone on the red carpet for the premiere of Wonderful World only had the best to say about him! The film's director, Joshua Goldin, was blown away by his abilities and Broderick's costar; Sanaa Lathan enjoyed the amusement he brought to the set. And, of course, Sarah Jessica Parker was thrilled to be walking the carpet to support her husband. While everyone may think the world of Broderick, the man he plays has a completely different reputation. Ben Singer is known for his negative attitude. When his roommate falls ill, he is forced play host to his sister, Khadi (Lathan). What begins as just another inconvenience to darken the cloud looming over Ben's head turns out to be a source of inspiration. Check out what the cast of Wonderful World told me while on the red carpet:...
