Somewhere, at this very moment, someone's dad is probably watching one of the Jesse Stone movies on DVD, and that man is having a great afternoon. After this, he might pop in "Ford v. Ferrari" for the seventh time.
The character of Jesse Stone began his life in a series of airport novels written by the late Robert B. Parker. The first Jesse Stone novel, "Night Passage," was published in 1997 and it followed the titular former LAPD detective (and divorced recovering alcoholic) as he investigated money laundering and murder in Paradise, Massachusetts. Parker had a hit on his hands with "Night Passage," and proceeded to writer eight additional Jesse Stone novels from 1998 up until his death in 2010. Jesse Stone had become an institution at that point, and other authors began writing Stone novels in Parker's style. There have been 11 additional Jesse Stone novels written after Parker's death.

2023 was a solid year for horror films, and even still, there were plenty of gems that went criminally underseen. Fortunately, because horror fans are some of the most rabid (see: passionate) fans around, even movies denied multi-million dollar ad campaigns can still find their people through word-of-mouth praise, fan art, and obsessive gushing. "The Ruins," "Jamie Marks is Dead," "Swallowed," and "Midnight Kiss" director Carter Smith's latest feature film is also his best, which is why it's such a shame that "The Passenger" (read our review here) is only now picking up mainstream attention. A thrilling two-hander starring horror fan favorite Kyle Gallner and relative newcomer Johnny Berchtold, "The Passenger" is the spiritual successor to Robert Harmon's "The Hitcher," and just as brutal.
Berchtold's Randy is not just your average fast food worker, he might as well be invisible. He's passive to the point of enduring exploitation from everyone around him,...

Fairy man.
We spent June discussing a cisgender male demon trapped in a female body, genderfluid dinosaurs and evil weaves, so we’re kicking off July with a film that’s a bit more grounded: Robert Harmon‘s classic cautionary tale The Hitcher!
In The Hitcher, Jim (C. Thomas Howell) picks up a hitchhiker named John Ryder (Rutger Hauer) while transporting a car from Chicago to San Diego. After quickly showing Jim his murderous ways, John is kicked out of the car and begins a relentless pursuit of Jim, murdering anyone who gets in his way and framing Jim for the murders. With no one to help him except a local waitress (Jennifer Jason Leigh), Jim must decide how far he is willing to go to survive.

A year and a half has gone by since we heard that Second Sight Films had tracked down the original camera negative for the 1986 classic The Hitcher (watch it Here), which would allow them to do a full restoration and a 4K release. Now Second Sight has shared an update on the status of the 4K restoration, complete with a quote from director Robert Harmon!
Harmon was quoted as saying, “Stunned by how great it looks… beautiful work!! Really, this movie has no business looking this good considering how ancient the elements are. Thanks to everyone for dedication way beyond anything I could ever have hoped for.” Second Sight added that, “We’re thrilled at Robert’s reaction and owe a huge thanks for his time and supervision. Nearing end of the grading stage, a final session with Robert being scheduled soon. Release / Pre-order date Tbc.”

(Welcome to Best Actor Ever, an ongoing series where we explore the careers and performances of the greatest performers to ever grace the screen.)
There is not an actor in the history of moving pictures who has been more egregiously taken for granted by her industry than Jennifer Jason Leigh.
Critics have always had her back. The New York Times' Janet Maslin got it from the jump when she singled Leigh out as "the only thing worth seeing" in her film debut "Eyes of a Stranger." The better-than-average 1981 slasher film set the tone for Leigh's career in that she plays a victim. Her character is a blind-deaf mute whose condition was brought on by being kidnapped and raped at an early age. The 19-year-old Leigh projects sweetness and innocence, but this young woman is all serrated edges. Because she isn't just a victim. She's a survivor.

Mark Rosman‘s The House on Sorority Row (1982) and Stewart Hendler‘s Sorority Row (2009) feel shoved aside in their respective horror classes. Titles like Pieces, Black Christmas, and The Dorm That Dripped Blood get more frequent mentions when discussing pre-90s sorority or dormitory slashers. Remake debates rarely include Sorority Row in their reassessments of unfairly stigmatized 2000s horror revamps based on nostalgia biases (among other reasons). It’s interesting how both seem equally less popular despite their amassed cult followings after meager box office openings.
It’s almost like Hendler attempted to shake the original’s mojo by deeming Sorority Row an adaptation of Rosman’s screenplay Seven Sisters — the earlier iteration of what would become The House on Sorority Row. Don’t mind the trickiness because Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger write their re-imagining indebted to The House on Sorority Row. Maybe late-2000s remake fatigue led to...

Each movie is entirely fascinating, and you’ll find yourself rooting for Jesse every step of the way. If you’re looking for great tv movies, be sure to watch Jesse Stone Movies. There are nine films in the Jesse Stone franchise; you won’t get bored soon.

The feature debut of both screenwriter Eric Red (Bad Moon, Near Dark) and director Robert Harmon withstands time for many reasons. It’s the latter that transforms a well-executed thriller into something remarkable. […]...

Russell Crowe is going to save cinema! So goes the marketing push for road-rage thriller “Unhinged,” the first new film to open in theaters since lockdown. Yet it’s worth acknowledging that Crowe hasn’t exactly saved cinema in the past decade, where “Les Misérables,” “The Water Diviner” and “The Nice Guys” are the only moderate highlights. To buy into the hype around “Unhinged,” one has to accept the cult of Crowe and pretend that he’s still a relevant movie star, to pretend it’s no later than 2003’s “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” and Crowe remains a gladiator of cinema.
But even that mind game can’t rescue the lazy B-movie routine of this cheap entertainment from director Derrick Borte, which could be generously described as an homage to Joel Schumacher’s “Falling Down” by way of Steven Spielberg’s “Duel.”

Jeong-hyun (Kim Ju-hyuk) celebrates the publication of his manuscript by taking his wife Yun-Hie (Choo Sang-mi) away for a vacation. At a stop, Yun-hie notices M (Park Joong-hoon) starring at her. As they both leave, Jeong-Hyun appears to accidentally reverse into M, and to defuse the situation, they accept his request of a lift. Increasingly unnerved by their passenger’s behaviour, they are relieved to reach the first destination of their trip and leave him behind them. After a night where a rock is thrown through their hotel bedroom, they leave only to have a dangerous encounter on the road with a 4×4. At the next town, the 4×4 again forces them to nearly have an accident. A furious Jeong-hyun gets out of the car to confront the driver who turns out to be M. This is just the start of a psychological game that will ultimately escalate to violence and murder.

If any author to have existed within our lifetime can lay claim to having a fair amount of their work adapted to cinema, it’s most definitely Stephen King. Granted, his books are amazing in their own right, but there’s something doubly cool about seeing them brought to life.
Of course, Mr. King is just like the rest of us when you get down to it, as he does enjoy taking in a good movie when he has the free time to spare. And when it comes to a mind such as his, it’s expected that folks be curious to learn which flicks he digs most.
Believe it or not, no less than 22 recommendations have been given by the legendary scribe in recent interviews. So without further ado, here they are:
The Autopsy of Jane Doe – André Øvredal, 2016
The Blair Witch Project – Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, 1999

I’ve never picked up a hitchhiker. Not once even thought of doing it. The idea of having a complete stranger ride beside me, not knowing who they are or what they are capable of doing (or already done), terrifies me. This basic fear (and others) is at the heart of Robert Harmon’s The Hitcher (1986), a surrealistic cat and mouse game played out on the lonesome highways of Texas.
Produced by HBO Pictures and Silver Screen Partners and released by TriStar Pictures, The Hitcher was not a success at the box office, costing $6 million Us and barely eking that out in returns. Reviews were mixed, everything from worthless trash to artful exploitation. The truth is somewhere in between – while the film has the veneer of Michael Mann, it plays as a discombobulated Michael Myers. A personal tragedy can affect someone in unforeseen ways.
Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) got new proof in "Knockout Game," Friday's (March 14) episode of CBS' "Blue Bloods" written by co-executive producer Brian Burns and directed by Robert Harmon, who also worked with series star Tom Selleck on most of the "Jesse Stone" TV movies.
The story opened with expectant parents Mike and Stephanie Rose (guest stars Josh Segarra and Rose Hemingway) taking an evening stroll and discussing possible names for their child. Suddenly, a gang of youths came rushing up behind them and one punched Stephanie in the face, felling her. A panicked Mike cradled her and screamed for help.
Frank (Selleck) already had concerns about the so-called "knockout game" being practiced randomly throughout the city's boroughs. As he struggled to determine factors linking the attacks, he ordered the NYPD to reach out to informants for any potentially useful information.

Thanksgiving is coming for the Reagan family, too -- but if their anticipation of the holiday wasn't tempered by crime concerns, it wouldn't be "Blue Bloods."
Maria (Marisa Ramirez) had a particularly rough time with family matters in "Bad Blood," Friday's (Nov. 22) episode of the CBS police drama written by co-executive producer Daniel Truly and directed by Robert Harmon, who also has worked with series star Tom Selleck on all but one of the "Jesse Stone" TV movies.
A murder investigation began for Maria and Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) outside a Spanish Harlem bar, but they soon went in to interrogate the very enthusiastic, soccer-watching patrons. They came up empty on suspects, until a security tape revealed someone Maria recognized (guest star Kirk Acevedo, "Oz") .
Danny and Maria went to find the man, nicknamed "Tic-Tac" -- and while chasing him, Maria made a side run at him, sending him through a store's glass door.

Joe Johnston, director of Captain America: The First Avenger, has signed up to direct the long-time-coming mobster biopic, Gotti. For the last two years, the film has been kicking around with everyone bar the Queen attached to star. Gotti once had Barry Levinson confirmed as director, Al Pacino as a crime boss, Joe Pesci as a ruthless gangster, Kelly Preston and…gulp, Lindsay Lohan as Gotti Jr’s wife. There’s no word on whether any of these supporting cast announcements still stand, but we do know that John Travolta will still star.
The film is based on a story by Gotti’s son, John A. Gotti, with a screenplay penned by Leo Rossi. No stranger to the mob, Rossi previously wrote 2004′s Mafioso: The Father, The Son. This will be the first time Johnston grapples with a mafia flick, stepping away from his usual genre fare. Previous efforts of his include Jurassic Park III,...

Special Mention: The Fake Trailers from Grindhouse (2007, USA): The four fake trailers featured in the otherwise disappointing Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino double-feature: Machete by Robert Rodriguez, Werewolf Women of the SS by Rob Zombie, Thanksgiving by Eli Roth and Don’t by Edgar Wright-are all very entertaining trips down horror/exploitation film memory lane and are easily the best part of the film.

Nicol Williamson as Merlin in Excalibur (John Boorman, 1981, UK):
Turning in by far the best acting in Boorman’s epic, Williamson sets the bar for all other interpretations of the Merlin character. Best known as an acclaimed stage actor with a history of incredibly unprofessional behavior, this is Williamson’s most memorable film role and will have you chanting the “charm of making” in no time.
Rutger Hauer as Roy Batty in Blade Runner (Ridley Scott, 1982, USA):
As an android seeking to prolong his short life, Hauer’s unique screen presence is perfectly utilized in director Scott’s atmospheric science fiction milestone. Hauer brings a sort of “alien” quality to the character Roy Batty and really makes this role a truly superior piece of casting.
Other notable Rutger Hauer performances: Nighthawks (Bruce Malmuth, 1981, USA), The Hitcher (Robert Harmon, 1986, USA).

From the 70s to the present, we look back through the sterling work of Rutger Hauer to bring you the actor’s 10 finest films that aren't Blade Runner...
For some, Dutch actor Rutger Hauer will forever be associated with a certain rooftop speech about tears in rain. But although his turn as doomed replicant Roy Batty in Blade Runner was a classic one, Hauer’s output before and since has been stunningly prolific. This list, therefore, is designed to highlight 10 of Hauer’s finest non-Blade Runner movies, with a particular emphasis on those that are lesser known – which is why we've gone for some older pictures rather than the more recent and mainstream, such as Batman Begins. And since this is Den of Geek, expect to find lots of action movies, horror, and low-budget sci-fi in the entries below.
One thing they all have in common, though, irrespective of...

As a young man, he assisted a cross-dressing alien in evading the feds in Spielberg’s 1982 smash-hit E.T. The Extraterrestrial and was told to “Stay gold, Ponyboy,” in Coppola’s 1983 drama The Outsiders. He made famous the battle-cry ‘Wolverines!’ in John Milius’ 1984 Cold War flick Red Dawn and as ‘Jim Halsey’ nearly ate a french-fried finger in director Robert Harmon’s 1986 horror classic The Hitcher. The Film:
Having been sandwiched in between Hard Target, arguably one of John Woo’s best American films, and the only Jean-Claude Van Damme film to eclipsed a $100 million at the box office in Timecop (here), many have forgotten about 1993′s Nowhere to Run from director Robert Harmon. It’s understandable, since those films, along with the guilty pleasure of Street Fighter (here and here), a more dramatic film from Van Damme would get over-looked. Sad, but true, and re-examining it after all these years, Nowhere to Run is a solid action film, through and through, mostly because of the story’s heart: the relationship between Sam and “Mookie”.
Nowhere to Run has the backbone of 1953′s Shane to some regards, as Jcvd plays Sam, a convict who took the blame for a crime he didn’t commit, and after his partner dies freeing him in a stunt that involves crashing the prison bus,...

What started off life as a $200 fake trailer entry into Robert Rodriguez’s SXSW Grindhouse Trailer Competition some years ago, Hobo With A Shotgun is now a fully fledged feature of bad-taste supreme starring the legendary Rutger Hauer. The film was released in the U.S. this past Friday and hits U.K. screens on July 15th.
We had an opportunity to talk recently to director Jason Eisener about the the rise of Hobo and his long-time respect for lead actor Rutger Hauer, the making of his award-winning short Treevenge and he was also kind enough to drop some hints about what he’s tackling next – in his home country of Canada, of course.
Obsessed With Film: Hi, thanks for taking the call. Just wanted to ask you a couple of questions about Hobo With A Shotgun.
Jason Eisener: Sure thing.
Owf: We saw Treevenge maybe a year back and loved it.

Image Entertainment has just announced Jean-Claude Van Damme’s 1993 action/drama film Nowhere to Run will be going 1080p July 19th. No extras have been announced, but I would just expect a trailer. The film was directed by Robert Harmon (The Hitcher), and besides Jcvd, Rosanna Arquette, Kieran Culkin, and Ted Levine co-star. On a budget of $15 million, the film continued Jcvd’s action dominance at the box office with a total of $52 million at the box office.
The film focused more on the drama of an escaped convict who takes on ruthless developers plotting to take the home away from a widow (Rosanna Arquette) and her two children, than a pure all-out actionfest like in Hard Target, released in the same year.

"If you’re in the La area, thanks to the great people at Screamfest, we hope you’ll come by and take advantage of this rare opportunity to catch The Hitcher on the big screen and buckle up for a road horror action film as scary as they come,” the film’s writer Eric Red told Dread Central. “We’ll be there to talk about the making of the picture so pull over and stop by, even if your mother told you never to do this."
Taking place this coming Wednesday, April 21, at 8pm in Los Angeles at the Downtown Independent Theatre (251 South Main Street, L.A., CA 90012), this rare screening of 1986’s The Hitcher (which stars C. Unshakable truth: Everything’s better with Sean Bean. Were it not for his presence in that wretched 2007 remake of director Robert Harmon’s “The Hitcher”, I never would have watched the damned thing. The talented actor’s latest endeavor, the stylish 2010 thriller “Ca$h”, looks pretty snappy, but then again, I’m a pretty big Sean Bean fan, so make of that what you will. However, even if you’re not quite sold on the actor’s inherent greatness, chances are the trailer embedded below will cause you to greatly anticipate the film’s upcoming theatrical release on March 26th. What’s it about, you ask? Sean Bean wants his cash back, and he’ll repeatedly pop you in the nose until you give it up. Now that’s gangster.
