With the jury winners announced this past weekend (see at the bottom), the 73rd Venice International Film Festival has now come to an end. As always, it was a strong kick-off to the fall festivals, with some premieres of dramas that we’ll see over the next few months, as well as a great many that won’t arrive until next year (or perhaps later, pending distribution). We’ve wrapped up the festival by selecting our 9 favorite films, followed by our complete coverage. Check out everything below and let us know what you’re most looking forward to.

In the City of Sylvia (José Luis Guerin, 2007) A city of pedestrian streets, bicycles and terrace cafés, haunted by the image of a woman (Pilar López de Ayala) that the male protagonist (Xavier Lafitte) met six years previously. A city haunted by the traces of memories that fill its corners. In this film—a sublime lesson in montage and one of the most startling studies of the cinematic frame—Strasbourg is a dance of feminine gestures and expressions seizing the man’s look. A city where wall inscriptions evoke the obsessions of Italian poets, where ghostly encounters and partings occur in public space, a city where fugitive bodies and faces become an ever-changing landscape where the hero projects his fantasies. >> - Cristina Alvarez Lopez...

Oldest person in movies? (Photo: Manoel de Oliveira) Following the recent passing of 1931 Dracula actress Carla Laemmle at age 104, there is one less movie centenarian still around. So, in mid-June 2014, who is the oldest person in movies? Manoel de Oliveira Portuguese filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira will turn 106 next December 11; he’s surely the oldest person — at least the oldest well-known person — in movies today. De Oliveira’s film credits include the autobiographical docudrama Memories and Confessions / Visita ou Memórias e Confissões (1982), with de Oliveira as himself, and reportedly to be screened publicly only after his death; The Cannibals / Os Canibais (1988); The Convent / O Convento (1995); Porto of My Childhood / Porto da Minha Infância (2001); The Fifth Empire / O Quinto Império - Ontem Como Hoje (2004); and, currently in production, O Velho do Restelo ("The Old Man of Restelo"). Among the international stars who have been directed by de Oliveira are Catherine Deneuve, Pilar López de Ayala,...

*full disclosure: a Blu-Ray screener of this film was provided by Millenium Entertainment. **here be some minor spoilers. Director: Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Writers: Nicolás Casariego and Jaime Marques. Cast: Clive Owen, Carice van Houten, Daniel Brühl, Pilar López de Ayala and Ella Purnell. There is a disappointing thought that emerges after watching Intruders: that is it? The script from Nicolás Casariego and Jaime Marques sets up a fairly limp fish, which is mediocre through the second and third acts. The acting from Clive Owen and Carice van Houten is much better than the script. However, the film is hampered by a partially fleshed out story that is mostly lacking in terror. Casariego and Marques do manage to create some interest with their dual storytelling style. The film begins with Juan (Izán Corchero) and a mysterious figure. This figure wants to steal Juan's face as he feels he has no identity of his own.

Classic monster stories have creatures tormenting children. Children are often the protagonist unless there's an adult around to really take charge of a situation. Monsters haunting children is comfortable to a story. It's easy. At least, it feels easy with Intruders, the new film from Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. But Fresnadillo, who knows intensity and haunting atmospheres, has the whole thing on auto-pilot. Intruders is a film that desperately yearns to find its rhythm, which it never does, all the while we're revving up for the inevitable information dump. Info dumps are easier than monsters scaring children, now that I think about it. The film bounces between two stories, one about a boy, the other about a girl. The boy, played by Izán Corchero lives in Spain with his mother, played by Pilar López de Ayala. Actors Clive Owen and Ella Purnell are the father and daughter on the other side of the story.

How do you make the most of a ghost story in the age of post-meta horror films? If you're Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, you run with the idea of a fairy tale until you've copied and pasted so many tropes that "Intruders" emerges as a messy puddle.
Pint-sized author Juan (Izán Corecho) is reading his latest horror story to his mother (Pilar López de Ayala) before she tucks him in, chiding him that his story has no ending, a helpful bit of foreshadowing. Juan climbs out onto a scaffold to find his cat when a cloaked figure seems to slide up to building and into his window. Inside, Juan's mother is choked by the creature until he intervenes and escapes back out the window with the specter on his heels. After a short walk off an even shorter platform, the figure falls over and Juan is left crying in his mother's arms.

Millennium Entertainment has released the official theatrical trailer for Intruders, the super weak genre film arriving in theaters March 30. We caught it at last September's Tiff and was not a fan (read the review). Starring Clive Owen, Daniel Brühl, Carice Van Houten, Pilar López de Ayala, Ella Purnell, Izan Corchero and Kerry Fox, the faux (I mean this literally) supernatural thriller was directed by 28 Weeks Later helmer Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. "Though no one can see him, Hollow Face lurks in the corners, desperately desiring love but only knowing how to spread fear and hate. He creeps into the life of John Farrow (Clive Owen) after Farrows beloved 13-year-old daughter Mia (Ella Purnell) is assaulted in their home. The South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival has announced the highly anticipated features in its Midnighters section, as well as the complete short films lineup, which will debut at this year’s Festival from March 9-17, 2012 in Austin, Texas.
The eleven films announced in the 2012 Midnighters program include a feast of titles that promise to rouse, haunt, and thrill the eager SXSW late-night audiences with an eclectic mix of thrills from genre filmmakers at the top of their game.
“Though our regular program already includes a healthy sampling of genre fare, the Midnighters section highlights those that go a bit crazier, gorier, and all-around balls out-ier,” said SXSW Senior Programmer and Operations Manager Jarod Neece. “This year's program includes both veteran names with anticipated follow-ups and fresh discoveries with new voices and charts otherworldly, insane territories that breathe new life into horror conventions.”

From the visionary fimmaker of 28 Weeks Later comes a creepy little film called Intruders. This one looks right up our alley and releases in March. Check out the trailer under the official details.
Though no one can see him, Hollow Face lurks in the corners, desperately desiring love but only knowing how to spread fear and hate. He creeps into the life of John Farrow (Clive Owen) after Farrow’s beloved 13-year-old daughter Mia (Ella Purnell) is assaulted in their home. The line between the real and the imaginary blurs as fissures start to open within the family unit. It seems that no security measure can keep Hollow Face out.

A little boy in Spain is terrorized by a faceless spectre that attacks in the night, oozing out of the shadows in the corner of his bedroom. A preteen girl in London writes a horror story for her class, which appears to draw that same monster, whom she dubbed Hollowface, out of the ether to hide in her closet, biding its time until it shall choose to attack and steal her body for itself (or so her ongoing story indicates). Did Mia (Ella Purnell: Never Let Me Go) invent the creature that is also terrorizing Juan (Izán Corchero)? Is she tapping into some level of subconscious childhood hell that adults have forgotten about? But wait! Then Mia’s dad (Clive Owen: Killer Elite) sees the monster, too, even battles it in Mia’s bedroom. What the heck could be going on? Alas that screenwriters Nicolás Casariego and Jaime Marques don...

The Strange Case of Angelica
Directed by Manoel de Oliveira
Portugal, 2010
If a portrait is a window into the soul, then centenarian director Manoel de Oliveira’s The Strange Case of Angelica aims to look through its celluloid covering and photographed subjects and uncover the power of the medium.
As with many de Oiveira films, the plot is simple. Isaac (Ricardo Trêpa) is asked by a local family to photograph their recently deceased daughter Angelica (Pilar López de Ayala). When he looks at the peaceful corpse through his lens, she opens her eyes and smiles at him. More than distressed, Isaac becomes obsessed with Angelica. She literally haunts his dreams as a glowing, transparent ghost. At the same time he cannot help but photograph a group of farm workers near to his apartment.
De Oliveira is as close to a modern Luis Buñuel as you can come. Though less scathing than the old master,...
