- When Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez decided to permanently shut down an “enemy” television because its political remarks were enough on the “left side”, he ticked off a lot of his supporters because the station was host to one of the more popular night-time soaps. Pedro Almodovar is looking to bring his beloved Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown to the small screen and despite the fact that it would be carried out in English, I would not be surprised if it comes with the trademark stylization of Latin American soap operas along with the master filmmaker's use of strong vivid colors, dynamic characters, great decor and the kind of twisted humor we originally found in the 1988 film (this was my first introduction to Almodovar and a very young Antonio Banderas). My first reaction is exactly the same as how pleased I was when the filmmaker who had made Dune,

Oscar-winning Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar is venturing into television with a series adaptation of his first international hit, the Oscar-nominated 1988 feature "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown."
Fox TV Studios is developing the English-language hourlong project and has tapped Mimi Schmir to pen the pilot script. Almodovar and Schmir are exec producing.
The movie, starring Carmen Maura and featuring Antonio Banderas, was inspired by 1950s Hollywood comedies. Featuring Almodovar's trademark rapid-fire dialogue and fast-paced action, it chronicles a two-day period in the life of a voice actress who has been abandoned by her lover and gets in a series of comedic situations while frantically trying to track him down.
FtvS -- which boasts an international management team, including president Emiliano Calemzuk, an Argentine, and senior vp Diego Suarez, a Spaniard -- acquired the rights to "Women" attracted by its pedigree, subject matter and international appeal.

It's another busy development season for Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly's Sony-based TV production company, which has set up eight projects from such auspices as Elmore Leonard, Graham Yost, Michael Dinner, Barry Sonnenfeld and Chris Keyser and Amy Lippman.
What is different this year is that most of the projects are set up at cable networks.
Since its 2003 launch, Timberman/Beverly Prods. (formerly 25C) had been focused on developing for the broadcast nets, landing several pilots and a series order from NBC for "Kidnapped."
Timberman and Beverly tested the cable waters this year with the A&E pilot "Danny Fricke." Now they're hooked.
"It has opened the door to explore subject matter that we would've never thought of developing for broadcast," Timberman said.
It also helped that their company is based at Sony TV, a major cable player.
