There is no exit for American Psycho. Bret Easton Ellis‘ hilarious and grisly novel has hardly gathered dust since its 1991 publication, thanks to the shock and awe of the narrative, the ensuing cultural reaction, and, no doubt, Mary Harron‘s slick 2000 feature adaptation that re-introduced Christian Bale to a post-Newsies generation (and also nabbed him the cowl). Blame it on the dark humor, the ’80s nostalgia, or our predilection for primal indulgences, but Patrick Bateman remains one of the rare cultish enigmas of the 21st century. One that is seemingly impervious to memes, merch, and even a middling Dtv sequel.
But what about a musical? These days it’s perhaps no surprise that even Ellis isn’t immune to Broadway’s IP-driven pursuits. Yet there was admittedly a slight reluctance in seeing this particular story leap from page to stage. After all, the journey to celluloid alone was paved with...

Riverdale Season 6 Episode 17
“This is who I am Arch, this is what I do.”
Traditionally, Riverdale‘s musical episode has been the annual installment when all hell breaks loose. So it was a bit unexpected how different this season’s song-packed offering played out. Instead of carnage, we witnessed an understated character exploration that focused on how conflicted Betty is about the dueling portions of her personality. Having been groomed by her father — aka The Black Hood — since childhood to become a serial killer, she increasingly feels the pull towards embracing her dark passenger.
With Veronica’s help she stages Slaughter Con, a serial killer fan gathering, at Babylonium, hoping to draw out Tbk and stop him once and for all. Assisting her is Agent Drake and Archie, which leads to yet another of this series’ trademark love triangles. Turns out that Drake has feelings for Betty.

The internet was ablaze Monday with the news that Lea Michele once gave an anatomy lesson to her “Spring Awakening” and “Glee” co-star Jonathan Groff using a desk lamp.
The two close friends disclose the intimate story in the upcoming HBO documentary, “Spring Awakening: Those You’ve Known,” which revisits the groundbreaking musical through the lens of a 15th anniversary concert that reunited the entire cast, many of whom have gone on to have fruitful careers since the show — Tony nominee Lilli Cooper, “Pitch Perfect” star Skylar Astin and Krysta Rodriguez from “Smash” are among them.
“Those You’ve Known,” directed by Michael John Warren and produced in partnership with Radical Media, is a truly comprehensive examination of the original production and its cultural impact, as well as the joys of the cast reuniting as adults. I saw "Spring Awakening" on Broadway for the first time on December 5, 2007, just about a year after the off-Broadway production transferred to the Eugene O'Neill Theatre. Alongside a small group of girls, I was invited by a friend to celebrate her birthday at the show. And I had no idea when we took our seats that night that my life would be changed forever by what I was about to witness. Fifteen shows later over the course of two years, I had a pretty good idea. That's the level of passion Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater's coming-of-age rock musical set...

CBS TV Studios, where Gussis, Webb and Rsp have had deals, is the studio, co-producing with Amazon Studios.
Written by Sater and Gussis with Webb set to direct, the untitled series tells the complicated love story between a young man and biological young woman who, over the course of the series, begins to identify as gender-fluid. In order to hold onto the love of his life, our young male hero writes an original musical version of Twelfth Night for his beloved to star in and perform over winter break. But they’re not alone — a group of college kids find themselves sequestered on an empty snowbound campus — and when the magic of the play kicks in,...

A Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway success known for musicals including High Fidelity and Next to Normal, Tom Kitt has over the past several years followed his passion for the world of film and television, making inroads on projects including Pitch Perfect and Penny Dreadful before finding a very personal role as music director of NBC’s drama Rise.
Having scored Broadway musicals and performed a great deal himself—with vivid memories of his own high school musical experiences—Kitt was the perfect fit to help facilitate this series about a working-class high school’s drama department, starring Josh Radnor and Moana‘s Auli’i Cravalho in her first live-action role. Depicting all the drama, excitement and magic that comes with the territory in youth theater, the series watched as a group of students came together to put on a production of Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s Spring Awakening.

A look back at the highest kicks (and notes) over the history of the Tony Awards telecast celebrating Broadway
“Grand Hotel” (1990)
Michael Jeter, perhaps best known from the sitcom “Evening Shade,” was a rubber-limbed sensation playing a tipsy bookkeeper in the number “Let’s Take a Glass Together.”
“Dreamgirls” (1992)
Jennifer Holliday’s rendition of “And I’m Telling You…” has been widely imitated, and this is the performance that is most often imitated. A-ma-zing.
“Rent” (1996)
Jonathan Larson’s rock opera version of “La Boheme” gained extra poignance with his unexpected death after the first Off Broadway preview. The show became a phenomenon, and launched the careers of Idina Menzel, Jesse L. Martin and Taye Diggs. Tony Awards
“Promises, Promises” (1979)
Ok, the song “Turkey Lurkey” frankly doesn’t make any sense — and the whole office holiday party is kind of shoehorned into the plot. But Michael Bennett‘s choreography is head-bobbingly,...

Jonathan Groff may be a fresh face to David Fincher fans (those who didn’t watch “Looking”), but Broadway fans have been following his career since 2006’s “Spring Awakening,” the Duncan Sheik musical that also launched the careers of Lea Michele (“Glee”) and John Gallagher, Jr. (“The Newsroom”). Groff plays FBI Agent Hold Ford in the period crime drama, who uses criminal psychology methods to get inside the heads of some seriously deranged serial killers. Not exactly the stuff of a toe-tapping musical, but Broadway-lover Stephen Colbert certainly wasn’t going to pass up an opportunity to harmonize with Groff’s dulcet tenor.

The synth-laden opening strains of Concord Music Group's American Psycho Original London Cast Recording are appropriately dark and sterile. In crafting the score for the musical adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' novel by the same title, Duncan Sheik has created a Broadway score that purposefully reminds listeners of synth-pop music by the likes of Giorgio Moroder while mixing in updated technologies to ensure that the score is as crisp and pulsating as any track on Daft Punk's Random Access Memories. The end result is an album filled with addictive looping and backbeats that masterfully mixes throwback modalities with modern technology to create an unexpectedly electronic musical score.

Tired of all those idiotic millennials with their sappy nostalgia, trying to pass off the 1980s as something more than a spasm of shame and revulsion? Then American Psycho is the show for you, bringing the ruthlessness of a serial killer in an orgiastic bloodbath to its depiction of the decade that annihilated taste, restraint and feeling. Director Rupert Goold, composer Duncan Sheik and book writer Roberta Aguirre-Sacasa crank up the satirical volume on Bret Easton Ellis' cult novel in a musical with design to die for and a cool, period-appropriate electro-pop score. And as Patrick Bateman, the

Bret Easton Ellis practically had to resign from the human race when Simon & Schuster dropped his novel “American Psycho” in 1991. (Vintage quickly came to the rescue to publish it.) Who knew that such a scandalous book, condemned by Gloria Steinem for its depiction of women and labeled as violent porn by many others, would turn up on Broadway as a musical comedy, which opened Thursday at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre? “American Psycho,” the new musical by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Duncan Sheik, is not the novel or even the 2000 film starring Christian Bale.
