You can almost invariably find your favorite actor’s best performances in their TV gigs, lead or not. There’s something about either maintaining a personality or convincingly growing through a transformation that needs a unique commitment. And that’s something a lot of big names in movies are often intimidated by. The abundance of critically acclaimed shows in 2023 has made it even more of a challenge to limit my favorites on this list of the best. So I’d leave it up to you to imagine the kind of impact the following performances must have had.
Phil Dunster In ‘Ted Lasso’
Even if the saccharine-sweet vibe of Apple TV’s Ted Lasso is not something you dig, you have to admit that Phil Dunster’s performance in the latest season was nothing short of extraordinary. With his character Jamie Tartt having the best character arc in the entire show,...

Frank Langella was slated to star in Mike Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher as Roderick Usher, the towering patriarch of the Usher dynasty, but mid-way through filming, Langella was fired after a misconduct allegation, and the role was recast with Bruce Greenwood.
While speaking with Wfpk‘s Kyle Meredith, Kate Siegel commented on the uncomfortable situation and praised Greenwood’s amazing work and decency.
“Most people who are correctly praising Bruce need to remember that every single scene that Bruce shot that wasn’t sitting down across from Carl Lumbly was an emergency reshoot. We redid almost all of it,” Siegel said. “It’s amazing what he did. It was heartbreaking. It was overwhelming and heartbreaking and disappointing, and people were hurt. I was tangentially — I wasn’t involved in any of the actual Hr stuff, but hearing about it, knowing that cast members felt sad...

The Fall of the House of Usher is the last of Mike Flanagan's Netflix projects, and also his darkest one. Inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe, the show tells the story of the rise of Roderick Usher as the head of a powerful pharmaceutical company, and the fall of his family as each one of Roderick's children dies a horrible death. Flanagan says his goodbyes to the streamer with what is by far the bloodiest of his shows, one that constantly features gruesome imagery and gnarly deaths that impart judgment on its characters. The result is one of the best shows of 2023, one worth revisiting as the year comes to a close — especially because of its cast.

It seems like a rich guy is in the news every other day, doing something funny or perplexing or downright horrible. Over the course of this year, we all watched Elon Musk acquire one of the world’s most powerful social media sites and then, instead of making the user experience better than it was, mold it into his own image, censoring any language and people he didn’t like. More recently, entrepreneur Sam Bankman-Fried, who was once counted among the richest people in the country in the Forbes 400, gambled on a fraud-ridden crypto exchange whose exposure and bankruptcy may send him to prison for decades. Six years ago, we had a famously wealthy businessman and TV personality as president who nearly drove us toward a nuclear conflict.

A sexual encounter between two teenagers turns into a bloodbath with one or both of them no longer amongst the living. A few friends passing the dutchie discover how hazardous smoking is for your health when a maniac with a crossbow turns their bodies into compost. And so on, and so on. Horror films traffic in people paying for their sins. Most importantly, the genre redefines sinful behavior as time progresses and societies shift like tectonic plates. Those teens having sex and friends smoking weed fare better today than 40 years ago.
But the one transgression that horror consistently confronts? Generational sins. Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher continues the genre’s tradition in which older family members make momentary decisions with little or no regard for the future. And when push comes to shove, the past catches up to their progeny, leaving blood stains and residue in its wake.

Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher is a horror story that thrills from the first episode to the last. The classic tale is from the writings of Edgar Allen Poe about the rise and fall of Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) and his powerful family and empire. Usher is the CEO of Fortunato Pharmaceuticals and has six very different children. He takes them all in and cares for them, not wanting to be set aside as his father did to him and his twin sister, Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell). Each episode sees the death of one of Usher’s six children...

One of the great delights of “The Fall of the House of Usher,” Mike Flanagan’s latest (and last) Netflix horror series is seeing truly terrible people get what they deserve, courtesy of Edgar Allan Poe classics. As patriarch (and a Richard Sackler-esque pharmaceuticals CEO) Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) looks on in increasing horror, his six children are picked off one by one in diabolically twisted — yet easily explained! — ways.
As Ben Travers wrote in his IndieWire review, “‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ channels its mushrooming rage into demonstrable blunt force and a number of grisly kills (not to mention eliciting a pair of juicy performances). Acclaimed horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan wears his influences on his sleeve. Based on his prolific output of TV shows and films, Flanagan clearly loves: Stephen King, classic horror literature, and most touchingly, his wife Kate Siegel (who has appeared in nearly every Flanagan project thus far).
Real Flana-heads know, however, that there’s one other thing the writer-director can’t get enough of: monologues. Oh, the monologues! Flanagan’s suite of Netflix series, including The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and most recently The Fall of the House of Usher have all been shockingly chatty endeavors. Though the horror maestro excels at conjuring dread with his camera work alone, Flanagan can’t seem to help himself from crafting bespoke, discursive diatribes around all the creepiness.
On the one hand, this is quite charming as Flanagan clearly loves watching his recurring crew of talented actors work at their craft.

Netflix's new series, The Fall of the House of Usher, had to remove its controversial leading star during filming due to criminal accusations.
The new series, based on Edgar Allan Poe's iconic short story from 1839, was recently released on Netflix.
It follows Carla Gugino as Verna and Bruce Greenwood as Roderick Usher. The series is loosely based on the original story and also includes story elements and references to other Poe stories like The Raven and The Tell-Tale Heart.

Did you know that there's a real-life couple behind the chills and thrills of Netflix's biggest horror hits? Writer-director Mike Flanagan - who created "The Haunting of Hill House," "The Haunting of Bly Manor," "Midnight Mass," "The Midnight Club," and 2023's "The Fall of the House of Usher" - is married to actor Kate Siegel, who's appeared in almost all of his Netflix series. In "The Fall of the House of Usher," Siegel plays Camille, a public-relations maven and one of the many children of Roderick Usher.
It turns out, horror is pretty intrinsic to Flanagan and Siegel's bond. They met on the set of a horror movie and have been working together on a bunch of scary thriller projects ever since. Back in 2021, Siegel opened up about why she thinks Flanagan's projects end up being so special and beloved. "I think most of the people who get hired...

Mike Flanagan’s creative partnership with Netflix has produced several memorable pieces of art over the last several years. His latest project for the streaming service, the gothic horror series “The Fall of the House of Usher,” is yet another that will have viewers talking.
The eight-episode drama skillfully blends the work and imagery of Edgar Allen Poe with a timely narrative about the Usher family, a privileged group who own a pharmaceutical company that is largely responsible for the current opioid crisis. Bruce Greenwood leads the cast as Roderick Usher, the patriarch who must confront his past in the wake of the violent deaths of all of his children. Joining Greenwood are several actors who’ve starred in Flanagan’s previous Netflix series, including Carla Gugino, Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, Henry Thomas and Zach Gilford, and new additions like Mary McDonnell and Mark Hamill, who turn in fantastic performances in the gripping tale.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Fall of the House of Usher Season 1, Episodes 1-8.] The Fall of the House of Usher serves up several mysteries to viewers, but one remains consistent throughout the episodes leading up to the finale, when all of the puzzle pieces click into place. Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood), the head of Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, begins seeing visions of his dead children, and an unrecognizable figure is introduced in the backseat of his car when a Jester is seen poking his head out from the shadowed cabin. It’s an ominous and brief appearance, but it raises the question, who is the Jester? Well, we finally have some answers for you, but beware of major spoilers if you haven’t yet watched the full season of Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy‘s final Netflix series. Afflicted with a degenerative condition that causes hallucinations, Roderick sees this taunting Jester, which serves as a...

This article contains spoilers for Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher.
As its title suggests, Mike Flanagan’s latest project for Netflix, The Fall of the House of Usher, is an intensely Edgar Allan Poe affair. The eight-episode series, which follows the modern day rise and fall of fictional opioid giant Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, is based on not only Poe’s epic “The Fall of the House of Usher” but many of his other seminal classics as well.
Fittingly, pretty much every character on the show is named after an Edgar Allan Poe creation. These range from the blindingly obvious (Bruce Greenwood’s Roderick Usher and Mary McDonnell’s Madeline Usher) to the less obvious (Katie Parker’s Annabel Lee) to the downright obscure (T’Nia Miller’s Victorine Lafourcade). One of The Fall of the House of Usher‘s most important characters, however, doesn’t appear to have...

Mike Flanagan’s final series for Netflix is “The Fall of the House of Usher,” and it’s available to stream now. The limited eight-episode series is based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe, and that is reflected in every facet of the series, right down to its production design.
In the series, “Ruthless siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher have built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into an empire of wealth, privilege, and power. But past secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from their youth.”
The Usher family is played by Bruce Greenwood (Roderick Usher), Mary McDonnell (Madeline Usher), Henry Thomas (Frederick Usher), T’Nia Miller (Victorine Lafourcade), Samantha Sloyan (Tamerlane Usher), Rahul Kohli (Napoleon “Leo” Usher), Kate Siegel (Camille L’Espanaye), Sauriyan Sapkota (Prospero “Perry” Usher), Kyliegh Curran (Lenore Usher), and Zach Gilford and Willa Fitzgerald as young Roderick and Madeline respectively.

The house of Usher as it appears in Mike Flanagan's Netflix series "The Fall of the House of Usher" is a far cry from the "mansion of gloom" described in Edgar Allan Poe's original story. It definitely has the "gloom" part down, but it's only a humble house at the opposite end of the street from a true mansion, where the young Roderick and Madeline Usher's biological father lives but refuses to acknowledge them. Whereas Poe told the story of an "old money" family, fallen from greatness due to an implied family tradition of inbreeding, Flanagan tells a new money fable of the Ushers' meteoric rise and their grisly downfall.

Edgar Allan Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher" may only be a few thousand words long, but in Mike Flanagan's sprawling and savage new Netflix series, it takes a whole lot longer for the members of House Usher to reach their ultimate fate. Across the series' eight episodes, members of the wealthy pharmaceutical family die disturbing and complex deaths at the hands of a curse patriarch Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) and his sister Madeline (Mary McDonnell) agreed to years ago. In a clever twist, though, each death ties back to a famous (or lesser-known) story or poem from the famously bleak author, all of them reimagined for a modern audience.

The Fall of the House of Usher is filmmaker Mike Flanagan’s gloriously morbid remix of author Edgar Allen Poe’s best-known stories and poems, and it’s winning raves from critics (with a 92 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes). Even those totally unfamiliar with Poe probably found some glimmer of recognition amid the show’s nods to his best-known tales — such as “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “The Raven” and “The Cask of Amontillado” — given how Poe’s stories have threaded through pop culture over the last 175 years or so.
But even Poe superfans probably couldn’t spot all the references — because there are dozens scattered throughout the show’s eight Gothic episodes.

Spoilers for "The Fall of the House of Usher" follow.
As horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan has gone from production to production, he's assembled a wholesale acting troupe along the way. Kate Siegel (his wife), Henry Thomas, Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood, Carl Lumbly, Michael Trucco, Rahul Kohli, Annabeth Gish — they're all in Flanagan's latest, "The Fall of the House of Usher," and if you look back through his filmography, you'll recognize their faces somewhere.
That said, Flanagan always includes a few actors who are new to him, and "House of Usher" is no different. One of those new faces is one that's otherwise eminently familiar: Mark Hamill. Like the rest of the main cast, Hamill's part is named after an Edgar Allan Poe character. In his case, the eponymous protagonist of "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket."

Following the breakout success of Shirley Jackson adaptation "The Haunting of Hill House," horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan returned to Netflix with a number of other spooky tales, and today opened the doors to his final cursed house in "The Fall of the House of Usher." Loosely based on the collected works of Edgar Allan Poe, the series explores the corrupted legacy of pharmaceutical magnate Roderick Usher and the grim deaths of his spoiled adult children.
Flanagan is known for slow-burn stories that are heavy on emotion, but "The Fall of the House of Usher" is a little different. In Flanagan's own words, "'Hill House' is kind of a string quartet, and '[The Haunting of] Bly Manor' is this delicate, kind of beautiful piece of classical piano music, and 'The Fall of the House of Usher' is heavy metal." Medical horror has always been central to the mysterious Edgar Allan Poe short story, "The Fall of the House of Usher." It opens when an unnamed narrator receives a letter from the ill Roderick Usher, whose sister, Madeline is experiencing cataleptic trances from an illness of her own. When she eventually passes, Roderick fears her body will be analyzed for medical study and embalmed. Instead of giving her over for an autopsy, Roderick decides to keep her in the family tomb for two weeks. Alas, in typical Poe fashion, it is revealed at the end that Madeline was entombed before she had actually passed.
In Mike Flanagan's "The Fall of the House of Usher," the titular family's relationship with medicine is generational. In this updated story, Roderick and Madeline's mother Eliza worked for a pharmaceutical company while also being a devout woman who believed God could heal better than any medicine.

Given the circumstances, Roderick Usher should be distressed and grieving after the third death amidst his children, but instead, all he and Madeline worry about is the board and what happens next to the company. It’s almost as if this entire scenario is inevitable. The name of episode 5 is The Tell-Tale Heart, a murder mystery told by an unreliable narrator. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Maybe Roderick is paranoid, and all of what he’s saying is a big lie, a story his mind has made up to deal with the loss of his children, or maybe Verna is real, and she’s coming to get him next. Madeline has her own theories, so let’s quickly jump into The Fall of the House of Usher Episode 5.

For the absurdly wealthy, it can seem like nothing in their lofty lives of opulence and egomania is the same as anything in our own. Their luxuries (indefinite trips around the world) are not our luxuries. Their worries our not our worries. Their rules are not our rules — even, it turns out, the golden one. Within Mike Flanagan’s interpretation of the Usher family, at least, the well-known advice of “do unto others” is little more than a punch line. Roderick (Bruce Greenwood), the patriarch of the pharmaceutical scions, explains how a joke he once told his children morphed into an accidental family motto. “It was in a comic book,” he says during an early episode of “The Fall of the House of Usher.” “‘The Wizard of Id’ — No. 4, I think, late ’60s — and the cover had a stout little king standing in a green tower.” The king bellows out to his pupils,...

Mike Flanagan has cemented himself as the king of horror mini-series because he took existing formats, refined them, gave them his unique twist, and in the end, it became its own new genre.
The Fall of the House of Usher Season 1 Episode 1 introduced his latest endeavor, where he took some of the most popular stories by Edgar Allan Poe and gave them a modern twist that the audience from the twenty-first century would be able to identify with more.
My full disclosure is that my knowledge of Edgar Allan Poe is surface-level at best, so I'm coming at this from a purely entertainment-oriented angle.
Do you think I'll miss any nuances about Edgar's works the show aims to explore?
The first noticeable thing about the show was that the faces were familiar.

Mike Flanagan brings back several of his favorite actors for his new Netflix series “The Fall of the House of Usher,” including wife Kate Siegel, Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood and Henry Thomas. You’ll also recognize several cast members from the canceled-too-soon “Midnight Club” and a few from the film “Doctor Sleep” and the limited series “Midnight Mass.”
And you might need help keeping track of who’s who within the Usher family, headed up by Roderick and Madeleine Usher. Flanagan drew on various Edgar Allan Poe writings for this macabre tale, including the title story, as well as “The Masque of the Red Death,” “The Raven” and “The Pit and the Pendulum.”
Here’s a complete “Fall of the House of Usher” cast and character guide.

This article contains spoilers for The Fall of the House of Usher.
To say there’s a lot going on in The Fall of the House of Usher is to put it lightly. This Netflix title is…
– The latest (and likely final) spooky Netflix series from horror maestro Mike Flanagan before he moves on to his new overall deal at Amazon.
– A deeply angry allegory about the human wreckage wrought from the opioid crisis.
– An adaption of Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Fall of the House of Usher.”
– An Easter egg and reference bonanza of the rest of the Gothic literature titan’s classic works.
While all of those elements are of equal importance, it’s the Poe aspects that really shine through. Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher may just be the most effusive love letter to America’s spooky uncle that has ever been penned.

Sure as the Pizza Planet truck will show up in every Pixar movie (except "The Incredibles" for some reason), the Lasser Glass can always be found somewhere in Mike Flanagan's horror movies and TV shows. This ornate, evil mirror hails from the very beginning of Flanagan's career -- a short film called "Oculus: Chapter 3 - The Man with the Plan," made in 2005 -- and the filmmaker has brought it with him ever since. Either that ... or it's been following him.
As you might expect, the Lasser Glass makes another appearance in Flanagan's new Netflix series, "The Fall of the House of Usher." An adaptation of various works by Edgar Allan Poe, the eight-episode series reimagines the doomed Usher family as pharmaceutical magnates in the vein of the real-life Sackler family. The Ushers have played a major role in creating America's opioid crisis, but have escaped justice thanks to a...

There’s at least one death in almost every episode of The Fall of the House of Usher. Well, in seven out of eight, if I have to be specific. There’s also a lot of cynicism, self-reflection, long monologues, both in prose and poetry, and a whole lot of Edgar Allan Poe in it. As you all know by now, the series is an adaptation of Poe’s famous short horror tale of the same name, by modern-day horror master Mike Flanagan. But it is more than just that, as Flanagan has folded in a lot of other macabre horror tales of Poe, as well as so many references and easter eggs.
If you are familiar with Flanagan’s style of adapting classic horror into morbid, deeply moving sentimental pieces, then this should not surprise you. However, Poe’s work is unlike anyone else’s, and Flanagan has done total justice to that here.

This post contains spoilers for episodes 3 & 4 of "The Fall of the House of Usher."
Horror director Mike Flanagan rarely relies on frequent jumpscares to deliver shocks and thrills, and his oeuvre primarily consists of raw, emotion-driven stories that aim to excavate the depths of the human psyche. To no one's surprise, his "The Fall of the House of Usher" — a modern reimagining of Edgar Allan Poe's short story of the same name, amalgamated with a dozen references to his work — also dives deep into the rot of emotions that fester, until they're potent enough to topple a formidable personal empire. Apart from the grisly deaths that mark almost every episode in this limited series, there are two instances of fairly graphic animal harm/death that can be potentially disturbing, especially for those who love and adore cats, whose presence takes on a special significance in the context of the Ushers and Poe's work.

The Fall of the House of Usher is Mike Flanagan’s last series as part of his overall deal with Netflix, and it may just be one of his best yet. Adapting various works from Edgar Allan Poe, this show depicts the glorious rise and horrific fall of the Usher family. As with all of his projects thus far, Mike Flanagan has assembled a stacked ensemble cast full of familiar faces and relative newcomers including heavy-hitters like Mark Hamill, Mary McDonnell, and Bruce Greenwood.
Here are the actors that bring the Usher clan, their allies, and their adversaries to life.

For most people, choices made incur consequences. One of the most intriguing components of life is the realization that we all have a tab, and at one point or another, a bill will come due. The 1% who hold the majority of the wealth and influence globally typically don’t abide by these same rules. The upper echelons of society move through life seemingly without repercussions by leaching off the powerless. Mike Flanagan’s “The Fall of the House of Usher,” which earns its title from an 1839 Edgar Allen Poe story, showcases the demise of a family who, after being afforded every opportunity, eventually pays the price for their rampant monstrosity.

One of the great unsung traditions of horror is a character’s external environment reflecting their internal state. It has found its way into films as diverse as Repulsion (1965), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Wes Craven’s New Nightmare (1994), and Relic (2020) to name just a few. Edgar Allan Poe was hardly the first to use the device, it had been a feature of the Gothic romances popular in the decades before him, but Poe moved it from character-deepening subtext to overt metaphor in his short story “The Fall of the House of Usher.”
Roger Corman’s 1960 film adaptation of the story latches onto and expands this and several of Poe’s obsessions into what has become a classic of slow-burning terror. The Fall of the House of Usher is the first in what has come to be called the Corman Poe Cycle. These eight films produced between 1960 and 1964 are among the most stylish,...

Among the glut of programming that has either documented the ills of the pharmaceutical industry (Hulu’s “Dopesick” and Netflix’s “Painkiller”) or the rotted core of the uber rich one wouldn’t necessarily expect another iteration to come from Netflix’s horror TV impresario Mike Flanagan. Even more surprising would be that such an allegory would be grafted onto the stories of Edgar Allan Poe.
It’s a bit of a curious and bold gambit on paper — a limited series that loosely bases each episode off of a different Poe work (its title comes from a Poe story of the same name), all of which adds up to a big pharma horror parable — but who better to pull it off than Flanagan? The series creator, who co-wrote the show and directs half of its episodes, has become a sturdy (and incredibly popular) hand behind a consistent stream of ambitious...

On a dark night, pharma tycoon Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) invites an old acquaintance to meet him in his childhood home. Auguste Dupin (Carl Lumbly), an attorney with the U.S. government, is surprised by the overture: He’s arguing a landmark lawsuit against Roderick’s company for its driving role in the opioid epidemic, and he’s never gotten the elusive magnate on the record. So, he approaches the boarded-up house at the end of a cul-de-sac, its rotting frame illuminated only by the pale glow of distant lightning. Inside, Roderick shocks Auguste by confessing his guilt—not only accepting the accusations against his company, but claiming responsibility for the recent, mystifying deaths of his six children.

Creator Mike Flanagan’s latest and final series collaboration with Netflix, “The Fall of the House of Usher,” takes on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. Much like “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” Flanagan’s latest uses a classic short story as the central narrative framework to remix a variety of Poe’s macabre poems and short stories but with Flanagan’s signature pathos. Unlike previous Netflix series, “The Fall of the House of Usher” eschews the familiar melancholy and dials up the gallows humor for a twisted tale that’s unafraid to get grisly.
In the process, however, it’s less effective at organically adapting Poe.
Like the source story, “The Fall of the House of Usher” begins with Auguste Dupin (Carl Lumbly) called to a crumbling estate for a final meeting with the deteriorating Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood). With time drawing to a close and haunted by horrific...

What if Edgar Allan Poe had penned "Succession"? The result might be "The Fall of the House of Usher," the latest streaming terror from Mike Flanagan ("Midnight Mass"). Flanagan, once again working with his usual stable of players, takes a "shut up and play the hits" approach to Poe here, dipping into the legendary author's work to reference nearly everything you can think of -- "The Raven," "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Masque of the Red Death," "Murders in the Rue Morgue," and on and on. Even Poe's famous detective character C. Auguste Dupin has a part to play, only now he's been upgraded from a sleuth to a crusading district attorney, played with calm gravitas by Carl Lumbly.
At the center of it all is an obscenely wealthy, and morally corrupt family of siblings, all of whom are under the thumb of their ruthless patriarch, Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood). Flanagan...
