Barry Sonnenfeld's 1991 film "The Addams Family," based on the New Yorker comic strips by Chas Addams and extrapolated from the 1964 sitcom of the same name, was a pop culture clarion call for aspiring young goths the world over. The Addams Family were a gaggle of murderous weirds who lived in a haunted mansion, kept a severed human hand as a pet, and regularly engaged in cute family games wherein they exhumed long-dead relatives. They loved blood, sex, and magic. It's possible they were immortal; the young Wednesday (Christina Ricci) regularly murdered her brother Pugsley (Jimmy Workman). Morticia (Anjelica Huston) and Gomez (Raul Julia) were sexually active to an enviable degree, perhaps standing as one of the healthiest, most sex-positive couples in movies at the time. They were full of zest and joie de vivre. Only they were obsessed with death, so perhaps the term should be joie de mourir.

With the Netflix series Wednesday, creators Al Gough and Miles Millar gave viewers something they had never seen before: the world of Wednesday Addams, away from her kooky, lovable family.
The breakout show, which opened to the second-largest premiere week in the two-year history of Nielsen’s weekly rankings, is the latest in a long list of Addams Family adaptations. What’s unique about Wednesday, however, is that it largely follows one member of the clan (with a helping hand, ahem, from Thing) and her life at Nevermore Academy, a boarding school for “outcasts, freaks and monsters.” Within days of being at her new school, the teen goth icon is wrapped up in a fantastical whodunnit that she’ll spend the entirety of the first season solving: Who’s killing Nevermore students, and why?

Whether you are pro-New Year's resolution or would much rather just see where 2023 takes you in the coming months, January will still bring with it a little bit of change. The first month of the year's list of titles set to make a disappearance from Netflix is relatively short this time around. Still, there are some real gems here — albeit some pretty campy ones — that we have to say our goodbyes to. And while we're probably all busy trying to squeeze in as many holiday-centric movies by the year's end (anyone want to talk about "Falling for Christmas"?), you might also want to try and squeeze in a couple of the things on this list in-between viewings of "Home Alone" and "Die Hard." Whether over-the-top action films or catty reality shows are your preferred guilty pleasure, there's something here for everyone to lament as we make our way into another year.

It’s already the end of November, but we had a wild ride this month discussing the dream-like pastel world of Jennifer Reeder’s women-centric Knives and Skin and the 25th-anniversary fascist machismo world of Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers. Then last week we made our second foray into animated fare (after ParaNorman) with Satoshi Kon‘s stunning first film, Perfect Blue. This week, in celebration of Thanksgiving and Netflix’s release of Wednesday (review), we’re visiting the Addamses in Barry Sonnenfeld‘s better-than-the-original sequel Addams Family Values (1993)!
In the film, Gomez (Raul Julia) and Morticia (Anjelica Huston) celebrate the birth of their child Pubert (Kaitlyn and Kristen Hooper), while black widow serial killer Debbie Jellinsky (Joan Cusack) marries Fester Addams (Christopher Lloyd) with the intent to murder him for his inheritance. Netflix recently announced their lineup for their 2022 "Netflix and Chills" annual Halloween celebration, and noticeably absent from the list was the anticipated "Wednesday" series from Tim Burton, starring Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams. The series is expected to debut sometime in the fall of 2022, but without it on the schedule, it seems as if audiences will have to wait just a little while longer to see the newest live-action interpretation of Charles Addams' beloved creation. First appearing as a comic strip in 1938, "The Addams Family" has been adapted to television, film, animation, video games, comic books, a Broadway musical, and countless items of merchandise. Regardless of age or interest, there's a form of "The Addams Family" for everyone.

For horror fans, the autumnal season is the time of year when we all get to be the belle of the ball. For a few weeks each year, our expertise in all things creepy and spooky is valued above all other film fanatics, and we're often tasked with providing as many film recommendations as possible for casual horror fans to cram into a month or two of viewing. Sure, there's bound to be requests for "the scariest movie ever," but as new crops of monster kids grow into their own year after year, there's an evergreen need for horror movies that adults can watch with their little ones.

Barry Sonnenfeld leaped from hot cinematographer status to A- list director with this sure-footed big screen adaptation of the TV show based on Charles Addams’s marvelously morbid New Yorker cartoons. The cast is ideal: Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia complement TV’s Carolyn Jones and John Astin without inviting comparisons. Winning an imaginary award for making sick jokes safe for PG-13, the script has true wit. The characters have depth as well, which is wonderful. Daring to be out of step with the times, the elaborate production, costumes and special effects are all on the same page: director Sonnenfeld and producer Scott Rudin see to it that the goofy premise never wears thin. The 4K encoding is a dazzler.

A new “Addams Family” live-action TV series could soon be coming to television.
Variety has confirmed with sources that MGM Television is developing a new series about the spooktacular family. “Into the Badlands” creators Alfred Gough and Milles Millar are attached to write the new series, while Tim Burton is in negotiations to direct and executive produce. Gough and Millar would also serve as executive producers and showrunners.
No network or streaming service is currently attached, but given the highly-recognizable IP, the series would likely have little trouble finding a home.
If the show were picked up to series, it would mark one of the few television projects of Burton’s career. His previous TV work includes directing episodes of shows like “Alfred Hitchcock Presents,” while he was also an executive producer on the animated series version of “Beetlejuice.” He is best known for his film work, helming critically-acclaimed features like “Edward Scissorhands,...

They’re creepy and they’re kooky, and they’re coming to theaters next fall. On Tuesday, MGM President Jonathan Glickman revealed the famous voices behind the studio’s upcoming animated remake of “The Addams Family.” Oscar Issac and Academy Award-winner Charlize Theron (“Monster”) will lead the cast, collaborating for the first time as spouses Gomez and Morticia Addams.
Playing their dour progeny are Chloë Grace Moretz (Wednesday Addams), star of this year’s Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner “The Miseducation of Cameron Post,” and “Stranger Things” regular Finn Wolfhard (Pugsley Addams). In a better world Addams Family Values would have got both the rich acclaim and enormous box office it merited in 1993. A deliciously playful sequel, it’s 94 minutes of tightly put together comedy, with a bunch of performers that come close to defining "perfectly cast." Christina Ricci, clinging to a fence as she’s threatened with the Harmony Hut, remains a comedy highlight of 1990s cinema.

Thirty years ago today, James Cameron’s The Teminator dominated the box office on its opening day.
Though the Arnold Schwarzenegger action film is now considered a modern classic, it’s not exactly the best film in its franchise.
In the intervening nine years between The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) became a hard-willed warrior, determined to protect her son John Connor and the future of humanity. That’s one big step up from her colourless, sometimes hysterical demeanour in The Terminator. Already Terminator 2 is the better movie.
Terminator isn’t the only franchise that has a high-achieving younger sibling. Let’s go through some of our favourites.
Aliens
James Cameron makes a good sequel. Unfortunately, his follow-up to Ridley Scott’s 1979 sci-fi thriller Alien was postponed for years while Cameron wrote and directed The Terminator and Rambo: First Blood Part II. We’re very...

Ariel Winter, best known for starring on ABC sitcom Modern Family, has retained her sister Shanelle Gray as her permanent legal guardian following a drawn out court battle with her mother, Crisoula Workman.
Ariel Winter Reaches Settlement
The settlement was reached in the guardianship dispute right before a trial was to commence between Winter, 16, and her mother. Workman stipulated in court that if Winter watched a video montage of family photos before the court adjourned on Monday, she’d stop fighting her wish to shift guardianship to her sister, reported Entertainment Tonight.
Following the montage, a teary Winter and her sister, Grey, exited the courtroom, declining to speak to Workman. In the settlement, Winter is not obliged to visit or speak with her mother.
Back in 2012, Winter was taken from her mother’s home amid allegations that Workman was emotionally and physically abusing her. Gray was subsequently granted temporary custody.

Dealing with some serious family drama at a young age, the plot has thickened in Ariel Winter's custody case as another family member is stepping up.
While the custody battle rages between the "Modern Family" star's mother and her older sister, Shanelle Gray (who currently has temporary custody), her brother has filed his own motion.
An actor himself, who played Pugsley Addams in the most recent "Addams Family" movies, Jimmy Workman claims he would be a more suitable guardian for the child star.
Allegations against Ariel's older sister include that she sexualizes the child, exploits her fame to promote her own acting school, and has a history with drugs.
Further, Workman claims Shanelle is having her younger sister spend gobs of money on a party lifestyle.
In response, Shalle's attorney Mike Kretzmer tells TMZ, "The allegations are nothing new. We will handle them in court. Shanelle has taken excellent care of Ariel to date.

Ariel Winter's Modern Family drama cracks us up, but her real-life family issues are no laughing matter. In a handwritten declaration sent to a judge Monday and obtained by E! Ariel Winter's father and brother have both weighed in via official court documents on the eve of the Nov. 20 court hearing which may decide guardianship of "Modern Family" star.
Winter's father, Glenn Workman, filed an objection to the petition for full-time guardianship by his older daughter Shanelle Gray. "I am physically, emotionally, and financially capable of caring for my daughter, without limitation," Workman says in his declaration, according to TMZ. "No evidence has been produced that suggests any detriment to Ariel associated with my father-daughter relationship with her."
The declaration claims Workman is not interested in his daughter's money (she reportedly makes $70,000 per episode, just like the other original "Modern" kids): "I am a frugal and modest person with a moderate income who doesn't need Ariel's income to survive."
While Workman does not address the allegations that Winter endured physical and emotional abuse from his wife Chrystal, he...

Ariel Winter isn't letting her recent abuse scandal hold her back. The 14-year-old actress has been removed from her mother's custody following allegations of physical and emotional abuse, but she was still spotted getting back to work on the set of "Modern Family" earlier this morning.
The teen best known as Alex Dunphy was placed under the guardianship of her older sister, Shanelle Gray, after an Oct. 3 court hearing. Workman was similarly taken away from their mother, Chrisoula "Crystal" Workman, back in the 1990s and was later placed in a foster home. The next custody hearing for Winter is set for Nov. 20.
But, if Chrisoula Workman is to be believed, the whole incident is a big misunderstanding. She tells People that "it's all untrue," echoing the sentiments her son, Jimmy Workman, said earlier today.
"I have my doctor's letter that my daughter's never been abused. ... I have stylists' letters that she's never been abused,...

Modern Family star Ariel Winter's brother has insisted that allegations of abuse in their family are untrue. Winter - who plays Alex Dunphy in the ABC comedy - was removed from her mother's care by the Department of Children and Family Services earlier this week after allegations that she had been subject to physical and emotional abuse. The 14-year-old is currently staying with her sister Shanelle Gray, who was herself removed from her mother's custody 20 years ago. However, Winter's brother Jimmy Workman has now told Us Weekly that there is no basis (more)...

If Jimmy Workman is to be believed, his sister Ariel Winter isn't being abused by their mother.
Yesterday it was reported that Winter, one of the young stars of "Modern Family," had been removed from her mother's custody following abuse allegations at an Oct. 3 court hearing. She's currently with her older sister, actress Shanelle Workman, who also went through a similar situation when she was a child back in the 1990s.
Though Shanelle was placed in foster care at the time, and though their mother, Chrisoula "Crystal" Workman, has been ordered to stay 100 yards away from her 14-year-old daughter, Workman claims that his mother has never abused his younger sister.
"There is no truth to these allegations," he tells Us Weekly. "The allegations made 20 years ago are not true and the ones today are not true."

Modern Family’s Ariel Winter and her older sister, Shanelle Gray
We’re still shuddering over the news from yesterday that 14-year-old Modern Family cutie Ariel Winter was removed from her mother’s home and placed under her older sister’s guardianship. Court papers revealed allegations that Chris (a.k.a. Crystal) Workman subjected Winter to “ongoing physical abuse (slapping, hitting, pushing) and emotional abuse (vile name-calling, personal insults about minor and minor’s weight, attempts to ‘sexualize’ minor, deprivation of food, etc.) for an extended period of time.”
Last night, Workman came forward to deny the allegations. “It’s all untrue, it’s all untrue,” she told People. “I have my doctor’s letter that my daughter’s never been abused. … I have stylists’ letters that she’s never been abused.” Ok, those are kind of weird sources, but we guess a stylist would see the actress up close on a regular basis?...

"Modern Family" star Ariel Winter, 14, has been removed from her home following allegations of physical and emotional abuse by her mother, reports TMZ.
Court sources told the website that the young actress was removed from her home on Oct. 3, after the judge determined the abuse allegations against her mother, Crystal Workman, were serious enough to order Winter to be placed in temporary guardianship with her older sister Shanelle Workman. The website also reports that the actress's mother is currently ordered to stay stay 100 yards away from her daughter.
It's not the first time that Crystal Workman has been accused of abusing her children. Law enforcement sources told TMZ that nearly 20 years ago, Shanelle suffered the same alleged abuse as her younger sister, and was placed in foster care for more than two years -- never returning to the custody of her mother.

ABC Family is bringing back the scares for the 14th year in a row with their 13 Nights of Halloween. This has become a staple of my October screening, and there are a lot of great inclusions this year. It may seem a bit repetitive, and you may feel like Tim Burton has taken over, but you don’t want to miss out on some of these offerings – especially Coraline – and it’s a fun mix.
Check out the full line-up below, and mark your calendars.

It's hard not to embrace a family whose lineage is psychopaths, fiends, mad-dog killers and other scumwads of the human condition, but this big-screen fill-out of the popular '60s sitcom ''The Addams Family'' is such a murky, amorphous glop that it's likely to wallow up far short of hit status.
Expect the thirtyfivesomething boomers to rekindle high school memories by a trek to the ''Addams'' household, and expect them to find the humor not as fresh as they found it during their wet-behind-the-ears days, and count on the teens and kids to find it, well, too tame and cerebral for their ''Beetlejuiced'' desires.
Orion, err, Paramount will have to generate considerable hocus-pocus to ensnare the 25-35 set -- too young to remember the TV series, too old to appreciate this low-level ghoulery.
Anti-establishment families who make things hot for the stuffy social establishment are always great movie fun and, indeed, this subversively brainy offering gurgles with much the delights of, say, ''You Can't Take It With You.''
The idiosyncratic Addams clan, headed by the slithery mother-father pair of Morticia (Anjelica Huston) and Gomez (Raul Julia) take salubrious delight in spewing hardship not only on their neighbors but on all the dullards and drearmongers in the world.
Their rebellion rears up in the form of aggressive sadism against the bland and the everyday; together with their two-roundfaced urchins Wednesday (Christina Ricci) and Pugsley (Jimmy Workman), they heap horrors on the lockstep world. ''Addams' '' most delectable moments come in its skewering of conventional behavior.
Rivaling only star Julia's mustache for pencil thinness is Caroline Thompson and Larry Wilson's puny bog of a scenario: An ugly strongarm shark (Christopher Lloyd), bearing a skeletal resemblance to the Addams' long-missing Uncle Fester, masquerades as the long-departed lout to steal the family's gold.
Unfortunately, the plot never properly locks in until 90 minutes of episodic household shenanigans unwind. While these horrific, lighthearted histrionics are sometimes drolly amusing, the story structure is such a hodgepodge that one surmises there are rewrites going on this very minute.
The family members, however, all stand tall in their delectable depravity: Huston, with her face porcelain-pitched with exquisite makeup effects, is an ethereal marvel as the blithely devilish Morticia, while Julia, with his grease-slicked hair and cherubic energy, is a kick as the enthusiastically demented Gomez. As their grim, grunty offspring, Workman and Ricci capture perfectly the energetic runtiness of maturing psychopaths. Lloyd's Uncle Fester is a highpoint; his manic glimmer and hulky menace is souped-up to just the right crazy concoction.
Under Barry Sonnenfeld's proper but overrestrained direction, the film is shot with appropriate dimness: One must credit director of photography Owen Roizman for the cloistered, subterranean look to the proceedings. Unfortunately, the ''Addams' '' gothic charm is sabotaged by its stylized waxy look: The sets, most prominently the family's graveyard, resemble more a chintzy theme park than a shrewdly subversive set design.
Among ''The Addams Family, '' there are many well-realized technical contributions: principally composer March Shaiman, whose searing sounds counterpoint the comedy with horror, and makeup designer Fern Buchner, whose striking colorations tinge the ghoulery with whimsy.
