Any Andrew Garfield performance is to be cherished – the British actor never fails to deliver, bringing emotion and commitment every single time. And his next role will be a different kind of expression than we’re used to from the star. He’s leading the impeccable voice cast of Audible’s new audio drama production of George Orwell’s dystopian classic 1984, playing the role of Winston Smith as he navigates the repressive society governed by Big Brother. Empire has an exclusive early peek at the audio drama, with a clip that sees Winston being confronted by the terror that awaits those going into Room 101. Give it a listen here:
Beyond Garfield’s Winston, you also heard Romesh Ranganathan as Parsons, with Cynthia Erivo as Winston’s romantic counterpart Julia. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg of the cast here – also in the production you’ll find Tom Hardy...

Mother’s Day weekend 2019 marked a turning point in the young life of Madhuri Shekar.
It all started two years before with a phone call from a woman named Kate Navin, then head of theater for Audible. Navin said she’d recently been armed with money to develop original works from emerging play- wrights, and she was calling to offer Shekar, just a year out of Juilliard, the chance to write. The only catch: Shekar’s play would have to be crafted as an audio-only production.
Shekar’s answer to this challenge was “Evil Eye,” a 100-minute potboiler that revolves around daily telephone conversations between a mother in India and a daughter in Los Angeles. The finished play was released on Audible in May 2019. For Shekar, the impact on her career was immediate. Within weeks, she was negotiating a deal with Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Blumhouse for the movie version...

Andrew Garfield and Cynthia Erivo will lead Audible’s audio adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984.
The Amazing Spider-Man and Wicked stars will play Winston and Julia, respectively, alongside Fleabag’s Andrew Scott as O’Brien and Inception’s Tom Hardy as Big Brother. The audio adaptation will also feature an original score written by Muse front-man Matthew Bellamy and composer Ilan Eshkeri, which will be performed by a 60-piece orchestra at Abbey Road studio.
Destiny Ekaragha (The End of the F***ing World) directs the Audible Original adaptation, which is described as staying “faithful” to the original text, while drawing in more of Winston and Julia’s romantic relationship. The Orwell Estate has authorized and endorsed the adaptation.
The classic novel, published in 1949, is set in an imagined dystopian future in which Winston and his colleague, Julia, are dissatisfied with their totalitarian government and look to make a change. However,...

Nature documentaries, true crime, even controversial stories of child-sexual abuse — they all need music, and this television season offered composers of varied backgrounds supplying outstanding scores.
“Really, you’re writing a concerto for dialogue,” says Michael Abels (“Get Out”), whose firstever doc assignment was the HBO series “Allen v. Farrow,” which outlined the case against Woody Allen, whose adopted daughter Dylan Farrow has accused the director of abusing her at age 7.
Most of the music in “Allen v. Farrow” supports the “reporting” segments. “Music helps us hear that part of the story, giving it momentum and direction,” says Abels, who enlisted a 40-member string ensemble to record and perform from Budapest.
The occasional clarinet solo, and ’30s- and ’40s-style big-band numbers, reminded viewers of Allen’s own musical tastes and Manhattan jazz-club performances.
The most sensitive material, however, went unscored. “When you see a little girl talking about what happened,...

The team of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross leads all nominees for the second annual Society of Composers and Lyricists Awards, the organization of scorers and songwriters active in visual media.
The composing duo (who won an Oscar 10 years ago for “The Social Network” and an Emmy last year for “Watchmen”) received three nominations. They were cited for outstanding original score for a studio film for both their 2020 films, Netflix’s “Mank” and Disney-Pixar’s “Soul.” They share the “Soul” nod with composer Jon Batiste, who contributed the jazz threaded throughout the film.
Reznor and Ross received a third nomination, for outstanding original song for visual media, for their song “(If Only You Could) Save Me,” written for “Mank.”

Ilan Eshkeri is something of a musical adventurer. He’s an award-winning composer who has scored a wide variety of films including Layer Cake, Stardust, Kick-Ass, Shaun the Sheep Movie, has composed a modern ballet based on Echo & Narcissus, has conducted an orchestra at the Louvre, and has even worked with the European Space Agency. As an artist, he’s always looking to be challenged and inspired in new ways. And his latest project is unlike anything he’s ever done before.
“I’ve been saying, ‘Let me do a video game’ for like fifteen years,” Eshkeri tells Den of Geek over a Zoom call, explaining why he chose Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima as the next evolution in his career. He’d composed music for just one other game, The Sims 4 back in 2014, and when Sucker Punch approached him to compose music for the studio’s upcoming samurai epic,...

Ilan Eshkeri has been tapped to score the BBC Earth docuseries “Perfect Planet.” Eshkeri, who has previously composed scores for “Still Alice” and “Young Victoria,” joins the ranks of Hans Zimmer and Steven Price who previously worked on “Planet Earth II” and “Our Planet,” respectively.
David Attenborough will once again serve as the program’s host, and over the course of five episodes, will look at how animals are adapting to the environment. “Perfect Planet” explores volcanoes, weather, oceans and how forces of nature drive, shape and support Earth’s diversity of life.
Said Attenborough in announcing the series: “Oceans, sunlight, weather and volcanoes — together these powerful yet fragile forces allow life to flourish in astonishing diversity. They make Earth truly unique — a perfect planet. Our planet is one in a billion, a world teeming with life. But now, a new dominant force is changing the face of Earth: humans.

The White Crow. Ilan Eshkeri: 'I find working with Ralph to be a very happy collaboration and I’m always very proud of the work that I’ve done'
Ralph Fiennes' The White Crow charts the life of ballerina Rudolf Nureyev in three distinct time periods - as a child, his early days as a dancer in Moscow and in Paris on the brink of his defection to the West. The film co-stars Fiennes as his dance coach Pushkin and later charts his relationship with Clara Saint (Adèle Exarchopoulos). The film is scored by Ilan Eshkeri - his third collaboration with Fiennes - and we caught up with him ahead of the film's release to talk about the challenges of the story.

With apologies to Tolstoy: Each unhappy family may be unhappy in its own way, but miserable adolescents do tend to get repetitious. “Measure of a Man” is the latest among too many of what one might term “My Crappy but Formative Teenage Summer Vacation” movies. Worse, it’s a particularly generic one that brings no distinctive personality or plot angles to a very familiar set of misfit-hero woes and eventual, underwhelming triumphs. A first U.S. project for director Jim Loach, the primarily TV-trained son of Brit auteur Ken, this bland flashback lacks the cultural familiarity that boosted his Nottingham-set prior feature “Oranges and Sunshine.”
His voiceover narration just as pedestrian as everything else here, Bobby Marks (Blake Cooper from “The Maze Runner”) recounts how he dreaded his New York family’s summer forays to a lakeside cabin in small-town Rhode Island, where all the available outdoor activities seemed designed to humiliate his athletically challenged,...

We salute the 10th anniversary of Matthew Vaughn's wonderful Stardust...
“A philosopher once asked, 'Are we human because we gaze at the stars, or do we gaze at them because we are human?' Pointless, really. Do the stars gaze back? Now, that's a question.”
Comic book movies are Matthew Vaughn's speciality. Between Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class and the Kingsman franchise, he's been a constant and eclectic presence as these films have boomed, and if reports are to be believed, his next film could be about either Flash Gordon or Superman.
But going back even further than Mark Millar or Marvel, Vaughn's first comic book movie was his adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Stardust, which arrived in UK cinemas ten years ago this week. Before it was published as a novel in 1999, Gaiman conceived the postmodern fairy tale as a 'prestige' comic; the four-issue mini-series...

Looking back on this still-young century makes clear that 2007 was a major time for cinematic happenings — and, on the basis of this retrospective, one we’re not quite through with ten years on. One’s mind might quickly flash to a few big titles that will be represented, but it is the plurality of both festival and theatrical premieres that truly surprises: late works from old masters, debuts from filmmakers who’ve since become some of our most-respected artists, and mid-career turning points that didn’t necessarily announce themselves as such at the time. Join us as an assembled team, many of whom were coming of age that year, takes on their favorites.

In Steven Cantor's Dancer, Sergei Polunin burns bright with a ferocious energy. British Royal Ballet's youngest ever male principal dancer, Polunin, has been compared to Nureyev and dismissed as party boy by the media. The documentary, executive produced by Steve Coogan, Carolyn Marks Blackwood, Christine Langan, Henry Normal, Jamie Schutz, and Nichola Martin, with producer Gabrielle Tana, creatively avoids neither side, and, with extensive access to the Polunin family and archival footage, paints a far more complex picture of the young man and his journey.

Rhys Ifans (The Amazing Spider-Man) and Sophie Kennedy Clark (Philomena) star in the surreal romantic fiction from artist Chapman, one half of the Turner prize-nominated artistic duo, The Chapman Brothers.
Adapted from his novel of the same name by Brock Norman Brock (Bronson), Chapman’s story is a parody of Mills & Boon-style romantic fiction.
The film follows a young woman who finds herself in an Alice In Wonderland-type dream world after her wealthy surgeon fiancé gives her a mysterious tropical island as a wedding gift.
Colin Vaines (Coriolanus) produced with Andy Noble (20,000 Days on Earth) for Morass Productions.
Jake’s brother, Dinos Chapman, provided the score along with Ilan Eshkeri (Kick-Ass).

Ilan Eshkeri with Christine Evangelista at the New York premiere of Black Sea. Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze Composer Ilan Eshkeri has announced the concert premiere of the suite of music from Oscar-winning drama Still Alice - which will raise money for the Alzhiemer's Society.
The concert on will take place on November 25 at 7.30pm at St Leonard's Church in Shoreditch, London, and will be performed by the same string trio and piano that recorded the original score for the film.
Eshkeri said: “Being a film composer you have to be empathetic, you have to imagine what it feels like to be that character, and this is what I have tried to do here, extending the themes from Still Alice to create these independent pieces of music.
"The start of the piece is about family, it is about warmth and love. The variations represent different aspects of life, but all based upon the initial theme.

When Shaun decides to take the day off and have some fun, he gets a little more action than he bargained for. A mix up with The Farmer, a caravan, and a very steep hill lead them all to the Big City and it’s up to Shaun and the flock to return everyone safely to Mossy Bottom Farm.
Shaun The Sheep Movie powers through visual puns, sight gags and rollicking plot twists to arrive at a hard-won realization: there’s no place like home.
As there is no dialogue from any of the characters, the music plays such an important role in the movie. That’s where the fantastic, colorful score from composer Ilan Eshkeri comes in.
Complete with the Shaun the Sheep theme, lively cues, and songs, including the award-friendly “Feels Like Summer” song, Eshkeri score is a wonderful soundtrack for a very funny film.

Shaun and his wooly pals are on a mission to make a statement next week when they hit the big screen in Shaun The Sheep Movie.
Lionsgate has released two hilarious Spectre and Mission: Impossible spoof posters before the film opens on August 5.
When Shaun grows bored of his daily routine at Mossy Bottom Farm under the watchful eye of The Farmer and his dutiful dog Bitzer, he conspires with the rest of the flock to take a much-needed day off. Their scheme seems to be working perfectly after they trick The Farmer into falling asleep (by making him count sheep, of course), but their staycation is derailed when he is unwittingly transported via runaway camper trailer to the Big City.
Determined to find The Farmer and bring him home, Shaun and his flockmates embark on a well-intentioned if ill-conceived rescue mission to the nearby bustling metropolis. Their action-packed adventure...

Ilan Eshkeri: 'For me, the love story was important and it felt like we needed a melodic theme that helps you feel that these characters are falling in love' When I last spoke to composer Ilan Eshkeri at Sundance, he was in Utah to talk about his work on Shaun The Sheep (out in Us cinemas next month). Fast forward six months and we meet again at Edinburgh International Film Festival to talk about his work on the altogether more grown up and niche TV series The Marriage Of Reason & Squalor and upcoming thriller Autobahn. The Marriage Of Reason & Squalor marks the first full-length feature of artist Jake Chapman (whose brother and usual artistic collaborator Dinos also worked on the score). The series - shown in its film cut at Eiff - tells the surreal story of hopeless romantic Lydia Love (Sophie Kennedy Clarke), who gets more than she...

If there’s one film you need to see this weekend, it’s Kingsman: The Secret Service. It’s funny, it’s fast-paced and it’s one insane, entertaining experience. Catch this one in the theater and with a crowd!
Based upon the acclaimed comic book and directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass, X-Men First Class), Kingsman: The Secret Service tells the story of a super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.
Composers Henry Jackman (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and Matthew Margeson score the spy action adventure comedy. This is the second collaboration between Jackman and Margeson, who had worked previously on Kick Ass 2. The duo supplied the soundtrack for the star-studded Kingsman with Oscar winners Colin Firth and Michael Caine, Oscar nominee Samuel L. Jackson, and newcomer Taron Egerton.

Shaun The Sheep breaks out of his pen and into UK cinemas this week, after Aardman Animations' latest film had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. In Utah, I caught up with British composer Ilan Eshkeri – whose other recent projects include Jared Hess's Don Verdean, Submarine thriller Black Sea and Still Alice - to talk about what Shaun has in common with James Bond and his approach to scoring.
Music is particularly important in the Shaun The Sheep The Movie because there is no dialogue, with the humour stemming from visual gags and the score.

In his review of the film, James Rocchi (The Wrap) says the film, “will have any thrillseekers in the theater clutching their armrest and shivering with imagined terrors.”
Black Sea is a suspenseful adventure thriller centering on a rogue submarine captain (two-time Academy Award nominee Jude Law) who pulls together a misfit crew to go after a sunken treasure rumored to be lost in the depths of the Black Sea. As greed and desperation take control onboard their claustrophobic vessel, the increasing uncertainty of the mission causes the men to turn on each other to fight for their own survival.
Back Lot Music is issuing the digital soundtrack album for Black Sea, directed by Academy Award winner Kevin Macdonald, it was announced today. The soundtrack features 25 new score cues by composer Ilan Eshkeri.

A great film score complements without burrowing too far into the ideas, wrestles with genre without locking the picture into a fixed identity, amplifies actors and actress’ choices without spilling the beans. A composer’s job is a balancing act. More and more, movie music finds itself backing off too far, devolving into incidental muzac, or going too far, where full-blast orchestral sounds pummel us like the Transformers’ energon punches. There’s a sweet spot, and the best film scores of the year ride it for an entire runtime. I shouldn’t be surprised that my favorite film scores of the year line-up closely with my favorite films of the year. As someone who goes to the movies with his ears as wide open as his eyes, I found myself captivated by 2014’s audio-visual offerings. Below, what I’d consider the "best" of the year (along with a few runner-ups,...

Versatility and adaptability are key qualities if want to keep working in the ever-changing film industry, and composer Ilan Eshkeri has shown those skills across a variety of movies. From period drama "The Young Victoria," to comic book mayhem in "Kick-Ass," rom-coms like "I Give It A Year" and "Austenland," and fantasies such as "Stardust," Eshkeri has shown a remarkable ability to roll with the demands of different films and deliver at a high level. That's the case for "Still Alice," and today we have an exclusive look behind-the-scenes at his work on the film. Led by Julianne Moore, the film tells the story of a university professor who slowly succumbs to early onset Alzheimer's disease, as she deals everything she's accomplished in her life and career vanishing from her memory. It's tough material that requires an nuanced hand, and as Esherki sees it, his job is to find the "emotional soul" of the film.

Toronto — Julianne Moore has already had quite a year. In May, she surprised many by taking the Best Actress honor at the Cannes Film Festival for David Cronenberg’s “Map to the Stars.” On Monday night, “Still Alice” premiered at the 2014 Toronto Film Festival and it may feature one of the finest performances of her already illustrious career. If you were to read a short synopsis of “Alice,” an adaptation of Lisa Genova’s 2007 novel, you might be slightly concerned. The film introduces us to Alice Howland, a Columbia University professor in linguistics who has balanced a successful career with a happy marriage and three grown children. She’s just turned 50, but notices that she’s starting to forget things. Specific words are dropping out of her mind. She’ll be in the middle of a lecture and forget a phrase or subject matter. Eventually she goes to a neurologist...

In the lead-up to the 86th annual Academy Awards on March 2, HitFix will be bringing you the lowdown on all 24 Oscar categories with multiple entries each day. Take a few notes and bone up on the competition as we give you the edge in your office Oscar pool! Year after year, Best Original Score is probably the technical category where I'd most like to see a significantly different slate to the one the Academy has put together -- a certain cronyism and conservatism often keeps them from recognizing standout work in the category. This year, two films scored by relative newcomers face off again three established Academy favorites (two of them due an award by now, the third amply recognized), and it's the freshman nominees' work that is generating more discussion in the category than the others. Personally, I'd suggest that there's only one truly great score in the race this year,...

After moving behind the camera in 2011 with a striking adaptation of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus Ralph Fiennes’ second directorial outing had its UK premiere this evening, following a very successful festival run.
The Invisible Woman has Fiennes taking on the role of Charles Dickens in a turbulent time in the author’s life, when he embarked on a secret affair with a young actress (played by Felicity Jones). The film has garnered positive reviews already and Fiennes’ charisma and aptitude as a director allows the film to breathe, something which was lacking in the suffocating miasma of Coriolanus.

★★☆☆☆ Revered British actor and director Ralph Fiennes returns to the London Film Festival this year with his second feature, The Invisible Woman (2013). Telling the story of the 'other woman' in Charles Dickens' life, Nelly Ternan, Fiennes appears to have improved his directing abilities little since Coriolanus (2011), offering up a tawdry biopic that's as stiff and stifling as a Victorian collar - and as frumpy as Queen Vic herself. Once again, Fiennes finds it only suitable to cast himself in the lead, this time as Dickens (ticking off yet another great historical figure), whilst the charming but miscast Felicity Jones plays the heroine of the piece.
We begin in Margate, 1883, as a black-clad Nell (Jones) stomps across the bleak sand dunes, returning to a boarding school that's busy preparing for a performance of one of Dickens' lesser-known plays, entitled No Thoroughfare. We then cut to Manchester, some years earlier. Here...
