“Shelter In Place. Wait Further Instructions” Watch The Scary New Trailer For A Quiet Place: Day One
“It’s the end of days. No more people.” It’s time once again to stay totally silent and totally still in the cinema when you go to see A Quiet Place: Day One. Just as audiences did in 2018 when director John Krasinski unleashed his horror film A Quiet Place on an unsuspecting public, everyone in the theater went dead quiet so as to not give away the Abbott family’s hiding places.
A Quiet Place: Part II showed the aftermath of the deadly events at home and the new terrors the family faced in the outside world. The sequel starred Emily Blunt, Cillian Murphy, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe, Djimon Hounsou and John Krasinski. From the opening moments of the film, the family was on the run, beyond any semblance of security and searching for refuge in a town gone mad with fear. In a time when empathy and connection...

One of the most memorable horror blockbusters in recent memory was director John Krasinski's "A Quiet Place." It remains impressive that the guy who played Jim on "The Office" crafted such a refreshing film (with lots of help from screenwriters Scott Beck and Bryan Woods) that has spawned an entire franchise. What tends to happen in the realm of horror is that a string of imitators will follow any major success. Well, the time has finally come as "Arcadian" has unquestionably taken more than a little inspiration from Krasinski's 2018 thriller. That said, this is far more than just a cheap imitation. Moreover, it serves as a showcase for one of our most compelling living actors: Nicolas Cage.
"Arcadian" recently screened at SXSW in Austin, Texas, and I was lucky enough to catch the film. Directed by Benjamin Brewer ("The Trust") and written by Michael Nilon ("Braven"), it's certainly not...

New Yorkers minding their own business when aliens attack from the sky? That sounds like a Cloverfield! Well, the first Cloverfield from 2008, anyway.
The teaser for the film promised hip New York teens filming themselves during an alien invasion. Between the Escape from New York homage and the name “J.J. Abrams” — better known at the time for Alias and Lost instead of Star Trek Into Darkness or Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker — the Cloverfield trailer created a buzz that concealed the finished product from director Matt Reeves and writer Drew Goddard.
Cloverfield left viewers hungry for a sequel that further developed the world, and Paramount was quick to acquiesce. But instead of giving fans another found footage chronicle of the central monster’s attack on New York, Abrams’s production company Bad Robot retrofitted a project called The Cellar into 10 Cloverfield Lane, directed by Dan Trachtenberg and written by Josh Campbell,...

Yes, 2023 was a great year for cinema were far scarier than any nights we would spend at Freddy’s. Not even the likes of Vin Diesel driving cars through explosions (again) or Jason Statham punching prehistoric sharks (again) could’ve prepared us for the likes of The Flash shaking our faith in superhero cinema or The Exorcist: Believer shaking our very faith in God… and by God, I mean David Gordon Green’s ability to handle horror. And need I say any more about my previous episode on EXPEND4BLES, the dumbest movie title since FAN4STIC and the dumbest Stallone sequel since Rocky V? But thank God for the likes of Nolan and Scorsese for renewing our faith in the cinematic experience, just as Winnie-the-pooh: Blood And Honey getting a theatrical release was about to have us swearing off the movie gods. And thanks to all you amazing readers...

This week in Rambling Reporter: On the heels of Sunday’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony where Netflix’s Queer Eye picked up a sixth straight trophy in the structured reality category, we’ve learned why the new season will be one episode short; Lenny Kravitz sets the record straight again on his BET Awards comments to Esquire; a pair of Quiet Place scribes make some noise in Iowa of all places; and Mauro Café’s owner has no plans to close anytime soon.

Released in the early quarter of 2023 on March 10, 2023, 65 held so much promise as one of the year’s earliest Box Office hits. However, besides its mixed or average reviews, it was far from being one of the year’s Box Office competitors. Set 65 million years ago, 65 (2023) follows a pilot whose two-year space expedition transporting humans in cryonic chambers is cut short after a mass of asteroids hits his ship. This forces...

Director Rob Savage’s adaptation of the Stephen King short story The Boogeyman reached theatres back at the start of June, and ended up earning over $82 million at the worldwide box office. (You can also read a review by JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray Here.) Now it has been announced that The Boogeyman will be receiving a digital release through services like Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango/Vudu on August 29th, with a Blu-ray and DVD release to follow on October 10th.
The Boogeyman was originally heading for a release through the Hulu streaming service, but it scored so well at a test screening that the decision was made to give it a theatrical release. The film centers on a 16-year-old and her younger sister, still reeling from the death of their mother, as they’re targeted by a supernatural boogeyman, after their psychologist father has an encounter with...

An astronaut awakes from a horrific crash after his spaceship is knocked off course. He thinks he’s on an alien world until it becomes clear he’s on Earth. It worked in 1968’s Planet of the Apes and is far less successful when the hero goes back in time in the recent 65. As in 65 million years ago. You know, the age of dinosaurs.
The movie, out now on disc from Sony Home Entertainment, came and went in March, earning a mere 35% at Rotten Tomatoes. I suspect the low score has much to do with the heightened expectations given the writing and directing team of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the screenwriters behind A Quiet Place, which was dripping with tension and plot inventiveness.

“65” is a sci-fi thriller that follows a pilot (Adam Driver) and a young girl (Ariana Greenblatt) who crash-land on Earth 65 million years ago and have to survive among dinosaurs and other dangers. The film is written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who also wrote A Quiet Place, and produced by Sam Raimi. The film was released on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on May 30, 2023.
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray offers a stunning visual presentation that showcases the 4K source and enhances the detail and contrast of the film. The Dolby Atmos soundtrack is also impressive, especially during the action scenes and the score by Bear McCreary. However, the disc is lacking in bonus features, as it only includes a few deleted scenes and a short featurette on the making of the film.
In my opinion, 65 is a fun and exciting film that delivers on its premise of space man vs dinosaurs.

Hugh Grant's on something of a career upswing recently, partly kicked off by his appearance in Paddington 2 in 2017, his work with Guy Ritchie, his cameo in Glass Onion and, this year, his scene-stealing turn in Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves. It appears he's now ready to plunge into a full-on horror movie, in talks to star in Heretic.
Before anyone starts cracking jokes about Mickey Blue Eyes having been fairly horrific, this is a new genre entry from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who co-wrote the original script for A Quiet Place and this year brought us sci-fi action with 65.
They cooked up a new concept that reportedly focuses on two young women of faith who are lured into a cat-and-mouse game in the home of an eccentric man. Grant, assuming a deal is locked down, will be that eccentric.

Chloe East, one of the breakouts of Steven Spielberg’s latest feature The Fabelmans, is in talks for A24’s new thriller Heretic from A Quiet Place creatives Scott Beck and Bryan Woods.
Beck and Woods wrote and will direct the movie that follows two Mormon missionaries who attempt to convert a man that turns out to be far more dangerous than they could have anticipated. Hugh Grant is also in talks for the feature.
The A24 project is eying a July start date but, as with any films shooting this summer, production can be affected by the possible SAG-AFTRA strike. Earlier this week, members overwhelmingly voted to authorize a potential strike should a new contract not be reached by the June 30 deadline.

In the wake of A Quiet Place and 65, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods have set up their next project, with Deadline announcing the A24 horror movie Heretic this afternoon.
Beck and Woods wrote the screenplay and they’re also directing the film.
Additionally, Hugh Grant (D&d: Honor Among Thieves) is in talks to star. Update: THR now reports that Chloe East (The Fabelmans) is also in talks to star.
Deadline reports…
“Plot details are officially under wraps, but the film is rumored to center on two young women of faith who are lured into a cat-and-mouse game in the home of an eccentric man.”
Scott Beck and Bryan Woods wrote A Quiet Place with director John Krasinski, and they just wrote/directed the high concept Adam Driver dinosaur movie 65 earlier this year.
The duo also wrote/directed Haunt and wrote this year’s Stephen King film The Boogeyman.

65, the “Adam Driver vs. dinosaurs” movie from the writing and directing duo of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, didn’t have great success at the box office, but Beck and Woods aren’t letting that disappointment slow them down. They’re about to go into production on a new horror project called Heretic, which is set up at A24 – and The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Hugh Grant is in talks to star in the film!
Beck and Woods have written the script for the film. Details are scarce, but apparently the story has something to do with two missionaries that attempt to convert a dangerous man. There’s no word on who Grant would be playing this scenario, but it would be very cool to see him take on the role of the dangerous man. He has previously said that he finds villain roles to be “more fun” to play.

With Hugh Grant firmly in the “distinguished character actor” phase of his career — think showy supporting roles in “Paddington 2,” “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” and “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” — the British thespian may be joining the A24 horror sandbox.
TheWrap has confirmed Grant is in negotiations to join the cast of “Heretic,” written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, which has the now standard “plot under wraps” thing going for it. But it’s a new horror film from the guys who wrote the first “A Quiet Place” and went on to direct haunted house slasher “Haunt” and the recent Adam Driver sci-fi flick “65.” They also wrote the recent Stephen King adaptation “The Boogeyman” which was slated for a Hulu debut before getting promoted to wide theatrical release.

Rob Savage’s The Boogeyman terrified King himself who even labelled it “extraordinary”. While the original story has been reimagined many times, often in undelightful manners, Rob’s version seems to be taking the world by storm. In the first 5-10 minutes of the film, it feels like we’re following Stephen’s story pretty accurately but then the tables take a very distinct turn. Of course, if the film had to be based solely on the source material, it would’ve been a really short one! The popcorn horror has a significant amount of psychological elements that make it more emotionally effective. This is definitely a big step forward for Rob, who began his impressive career with a found footage horror called Host. With a massive expansion of the original story, writers Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Mark Heyman along with Rob switch the lens to the psychiatrist Will Harper...

Step into the shadows in The Boogeyman (2023), a spine-tingling horror film based on the short story by the legendary Stephen King. Directed by Rob Savage and written by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Mark Heyman, this film takes audiences on a chilling journey that explores the depths of fear and the resilience of the human spirit.
The Boogeyman follows troubled high school student Sadie Harper, and her precocious younger sister, Sawyer, still grappling with the recent loss of their mother. Their father, Will, a therapist dealing with his own intense pain, provides little comfort and closes himself off to the girls emotionally. Little do they know that their lives are about to take a sinister turn when a desperate patient seeking help unwittingly unleashes a terrifying supernatural entity that just so happens to prey on families and feed on their suffering. Talk about unlucky.

The following contains major spoilers for The Boogeyman (2023).
Early Stephen King short stories have a particular kind of grit. Often called Vintage King, the twenty dark tales in the author’s first collection, Night Shift, vary wildly in subject matter and tone but nearly all convey a distinct nihilism and end with a shocking stinger or devastating twist. When adapting these nasty nightmares for the big screen, many directors amplify the unapologetic cruelty while others take the edge off of bleak endings by adding a more uplifting tone or reversing the cynical message with an outright happy ending.
Rob Savage’s 2023 adaptation of “The Boogeyman” falls somewhere in between. Working from a script co-written by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Mark Heyman, Savage maintains the story’s morbid tone by expanding the mental health element of the narrative, but presents a more hopeful ending by centering the story on the...

From the mind of Stephen King, 20th Century Studios and 21 Laps’ The Boogeyman was unleashed in theaters this past weekend, debuting in the #3 spot on the domestic charts.
Here in the United States, The Boogeyman managed to scare up a $12.3 million debut weekend at the box office, while the film’s current worldwide total is $20 million.
The reported production budget for this latest Stephen King horror movie was $35 million, which means it has to reach roughly $100 million to hit the point of profitability. You may recall that The Boogeyman was originally scheduled to go straight-to-streaming on Hulu, however, so Disney is likely quite happy with the film’s $20 million box office haul this past weekend.

Many of Stephen King’s horror works, including novels and short stories, have turned into movie adaptations. Some were highly successful, namely the It two-parter. Some others, such as Thinner and The Night Flier, were straight-out fiascos. This year, director Rob Savage adapted King’s 1973 short story The Boogeyman into a feature movie with A Quiet Place screenwriting duo Scott Beck and Bryan Woods alongside Black Swan‘s Mark Heyman. The movie stars Sophie Thatcher and Vivien Lyra Blair as the Harper sisters. They are still reeling from the recent death of their mother in an automobile accident. After their father, Will...

Stephen King’s short story The Boogeyman is about a man named Lester Billings, who visits a psychiatrist after his children have been killed by the title character. Director Rob Savage’s version of The Boogeyman, which is in theatres now, goes far beyond the story King wrote – but Lester Billings is in the movie, played by David Dastmalchian (The Suicide Squad). During an interview with Collider, Dastmalchian revealed that he initially turned down the offer to play Billings because he didn’t want to go as far into the darkness as the character required.
Dastmalchian said, “I read (the script) and I said, ‘Absolutely not. No interest in portraying Lester Billings. I don’t care to go there. I’ve done too much stuff in the darkness. I need a break, and I can’t do it.’ And then (producer Dan Cohen) is many things, a gifted producer, a wonderful human being,...

Host director Rob Savage makes his mainstream Hollywood debut The Boogeyman, a loose adaptation of a Stephen King short story from the co-writers of A Quiet Place. As such, it delivers some effective scares and is elevated by a trio of terrific performances, though the story itself ultimately feels a little derivative.
Yellowjackets star Sophie Thatcher plays Sadie Harper, a teenager whose family – younger sister Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair) and therapist father Will (Chris Messina) – are still grieving the tragic loss of her mother in a recent car accident. Their lives are swiftly upended when a strange man (David Dastmalchian) seemingly commits suicide in their house, after relating a dark tale to Will about a shadow monster that killed his children.

This post contains spoilers for "The Boogeyman."
Film adaptations of Stephen King stories have been on a somewhat steady drip since the mid-1970s, but after the immense box office success of "It" in 2017, the spigot has fully opened. "The Boogeyman," the first of 2023's two planned King movies ("Salem's Lot" is slated for release later in the year), is in theaters now, and it's based on a short story that was first published in 1973.
Several of King's short stories or novellas have been adapted for the screen before, of course, with "The Shawshank Redemption" probably being the most famous, but "The Boogeyman" short story is incredibly barebones. So how did director Rob Savage and writers Mark Heyman and Scott Beck & Bryan Woods expand it into a full-fledged feature? Here are the key differences between the short story and the movie version of this unsettling tale.

A very busy June for the box office kicks off this weekend with Sony Animation’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” a sequel that is expected to earn an opening weekend more than double that of its 2018 predecessor, the Oscar-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”
Back in December 2018, “Into the Spider-Verse” hit theaters, touting a new animated spin on Marvel’s famous webslinger based not on Peter Parker but on Miles Morales, the Afro-Latino teen introduced to the Marvel comics in 2011. The film opened to $35 million just before the Christmas holiday period. And while it faced tough competition from films like “Aquaman,” “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Bumblebee,” it legged out to a decent $190 million domestic and $375 million global opening.
But now, “Across the Spider-Verse” is expected to blow that total out of the water, with box office tracking projecting an opening weekend in the $80 million range, with Sony only slightly more conservative at $75 million-$80 million.

Vivien Lyra Blair played a child version of the iconic Star Wars character Princess Leia Organa in the six episode Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi, and now she has a prominent role in the Stephen King adaptation The Boogeyman, which reaches theatres tomorrow, June 2nd. You shouldn’t expect to see Blair wielding a lightsaber in the film – but during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Rob Savage revealed that her character did carry a lightsaber around in the script… but Star Wars owners Disney didn’t want them to put a lightsaber in the movie.
Answering a question about the moon ball that Blair’s character actually has in the movie, Savage said, “It’s a real thing that you can buy from Amazon. So we bought a few of them, cracked them open and put a light inside that we could control and dial up and down. But the interesting thing about that,...

Watch out. “The Boogeyman” is here.
Based on the short story by Stephen King (originally published in a 1973 issue of Playboy competitor Cavalier and collected in King’s 1978 anthology “Night Shift”), the slender story was first adapted by “A Quiet Place” writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods in 2018 for 20th Century Fox.
When Disney acquired the company in 2019, development was canceled, only to be revived in late 2021. That’s when Akeela Cooper (“Malignant”) and Mark Heyman (“Black Swan”) also took a crack at the story and Rob Savage, who had made a splash during the pandemic with his low budget horror film “Host,” was brought on as director.
The resulting film is very different from the King story, following a young girl (“Yellowjackets” breakout Sophie Thatcher) and her family (including psychiatrist dad Chris Messina and younger sister Vivien Lyra Blair) as they death both with the recent death of their...

The Boogeyman, directed by Rob Savage (Host) with a screenplay by Scott Beck & Bryan Woods (A Quiet Place, 65) and Mark Heyman (Black Swan), draws from Stephen King‘s 1973 short story of the same title.
Stephen King’s short takes place in a psychiatrist’s office and sees Dr. Harper engaged with patient Lester Billings in a haunting session that unpacks the mysterious deaths of Lester’s three children. Feature film The Boogeyman uses the short story as the inciting event that brings the malevolent entity that plagued Billings’ home into Dr. Harper’s.
In the film, Chris Messina (Birds of Prey, Devil) assumes the role of Dr. Will Harper, a psychiatrist struggling to help his family through their collective grief, when Lester Billings (David Dastmalchian) arrives at his home office for aid. This pivotal introductory scene establishes Will Harper, the lore, and its ties to King’s source material.
