If there's one thing Guillermo del Toro knows in-and-out (and there's certainly more than one), it's how to create a compelling monster. His filmography as a director is filled with memorable creatures, from the eccentric customers of the Troll Market in "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" — whose ranks include a tumor-baby in the vein of Kuato from "Total Recall" — to the decaying, blood-stained specters that haunt Allerdale Hall in "Crimson Peak." What's more, del Toro's monsters come in all shapes and size. As "The Shape of Water" sculptor Mike Hill recalled, del Toro told him to give the film's Amphibian Man...

After months of uncertainty, Black News Channel (Bnc) is shutting down on Friday just two years after its launch.
Multiple employees told TheWrap they were notified individually that Friday would be the last day of live programming for the Tallahassee, Florida-based network. The channel was launched in February 2020 by former GOP congressman J.C. Watts and broadcast executive Bob Brillante to target Black audiences they felt were underserved by other news outlets.
One staffer said Friday department heads contacted individual employees by phone to inform them that they were being let go. “I’m disappointed in the way management handled the situation and their lack of transparency,” the staffer told TheWrap. “I’m saddened because there are so many amazing journalists who care about Black and Brown stories and truly believed in the concept. Now with no notice, their lives and livelihoods are in limbo.”

During a later scene in Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley,” Rooney Mara’s character Molly jumps in a car with Stan (Bradley Cooper) and takes off a wig that she had been wearing to disguise herself. The filming of that scene was trickier than anyone in the audience could have guessed, since there was a whole lot happening on the Oscar-nominated actress’s head.
“Rooney’s normal 1940s shoulder length-hair was a wig,” Cliona Furey, the film’s hair designer, explained to TheWrap. “So when Rooney removes the wig in the car, that was a wig on top of a wig.”
Pulling that off, so to speak, is considered one of the biggest challenges for any tresses team. “It’s every hairstylist’s nightmare,” said Furey. “But we carefully designed the wigs and we and somehow it worked.”

Thirteen women are suing the Black News Channel for gender discrimination, accusing the Florida-based network of unequal pay for female employees and a workplace culture that forced them “to conform to sexist or misogynistic stereotypes about how women are supposed to behave.”
In an amended complaint filed Tuesday in the Cook County, Illinois, Circuit Court, the 13 plaintiffs allege that executives at the 2-year-old network disciplined or terminated female employees for being too vocal, pushy and aggressive, created a hostile work environment for women and paid women thousands of dollars less per year than their male counterparts.
Ashley Flete, a former anchor who first filed suit with Claudia Jean last August, said that a producer had been “berating” her about being “insufficiently feminine” through her earpiece while she was on air. After filing a complaint with human resources, she said her contract was terminated six months into a two-year contract.

If Australia needs inspiration for the ongoing battle against Covid-19, it can be found in the country’s efforts to eliminate cervical cancer, according to Sue Collins.
In Conquering Cancer, the documentary filmmaker embarks on an international journey of discovery, exploring how Australia’s successful cervical cancer prevention programs, including Hpv vaccination and cervical screenings, can be adopted internationally.
There are contributions from cancer survivors across Australia, Malaysia, Zambia, USA, Colombia, and Switzerland, as well as global health experts, such as Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus from the World Health Organisation, and Professor Ian Frazer from the University of Queensland.
The film, which is directed by Mike Hill, is a Moonshine Agency production, and is presented by FanForce Films.
Collins, whose previous works include documentaries Take Heart and Little Stars, told If the project was designed to share the journey to elimination and also draw attention to women’s health issues.

Of the nine Best Picture nominees at the Oscars, “Dunkirk” did the best at the guild awards. It ended up winning with five (casting directors, film editors, sound editors and visual effects wizards) of the 11 at which it contended. It lost with the actors, art directors, cinematographers, costume designers, directors and producers. This WWII epic had not been in the running with the makeup artists & hairstylists or writers.
“The Shape of Water” was nominated at a whopping 12 ceremonies (having been snubbed only by the Visual Effects Society). It prevailed with four, including a shocker at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Feb. 20, when it won Best Period Costumes over Oscar frontrunner “Phantom Thread.” This fantasy film also won with the directors, producers and art directors.

At the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on Feb. 24, Oscar frontrunner “Darkest Hour” won two of its three races: special makeup effects and best period/character makeup. It lost best period/character hairstyling to “I, Tonya.”
Among those films that “Darkest Hour” edged out for best special makeup effects was “Wonder,” one of its two Oscar rivals for Best Makeup & Hairstyling. That film contended on the contemporary side here and lost its bid for hairstyling to “Pitch Perfect 3″ and makeup to “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2.” The third Oscar nominee, “Victoria and Abdul,” was snubbed by the guild.

“The Shape of Water” pulled off a shocker at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Feb. 20, winning Best Period Costumes over Oscar frontrunner “Phantom Thread.” That unexpected outcome marked its fourth win from the 11 guilds weighing in to date. This fantasy film previously prevailed with the directors, producers and art directors. It is in contention with the two remaining groups on deck: the makeup artists & hair stylists and sound editors. The only group with which it did not contend this awards season was the Visual Effects Society.
Of the other Best Picture nominees, “Dunkirk” has gone four for nine at these precursor prizes (casting directors, film editors, sound editors and visual effects wizards). It is in the running with the sound editors.

Of the nine Oscar nominees for Best Picture, “Dunkirk” is faring best with the guild awards. It is in contention at two of the remaining three groups (costume designers, sound mixers) but missed out on any recognition from the makeup artists & hair stylists. The Oscar frontrunner for Best Picture, “The Shape of Water,” is in contention for prizes from 12 of the 13 guilds. The one group that didn’t nominate it, the Visual Effects Society, held its awards on Feb. 13. One of the other eight Best Picture nominees, “Dunkirk,” won best supporting visual effects here. That brought its overall recognition from the guilds up to three, having previously prevailed with the casting directors and film editors.
This latest win ties this WWII epic with “The Shape of Water,” which has also been cited by three of the eight groups to be heard from to date: the directors, producers and art directors. It lost its races at the awards held by the actors, casting directors, film editors and writers.

The Oscar frontrunner for Best Picture, “The Shape of Water,” has reaped bids from 12 of the 13 guild awards, having been snubbed only by the visual effects artists. This fantasy film has won with three of the seven groups to be heard from to date: the directors, producers and art directors. It lost its races at the awards held by the actors, casting directors, film editors and writers.
It was bested at the Writers Guild of America Awards on Feb. 11 by “Get Out,” one of the other eight Best Picture nominees. That satire contends at eight guilds in total and has also won a prize from the DGA for first-time helmer Jordan Peele. The other winner with the WGA was Best Picture contender “Call Me By Your Name.”

It has won with three of the six groups to be heard from to date: the directors, producers and art directors. This fantasy film lost its races at the awards held by the actors, casting directors and film editors.
One of its main Oscar rivals for Best Picture, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” edged it out with the casting directors. And this character study was a favorite of the actors as well, taking home a whopping three SAG Awards.
Two of the other nine Best Picture nominees — “Dunkirk” and “Lady Bird” — also won with the casting directors with the former also finding favor with the film editors. Another Best Picture contender, “Darkest Hour,” picked up a prize from the actors.

There is no shortage of great characters in this year’s visual effects Oscar race, including Caesar’s last stand, the return of “Blade Runner’s” Rachael, a beautiful aquatic creature, an adorable super-pig, and elegant crystal foxes. They not only boast superb high and low technology, but also display emotional nuance or complexity. Therefore, the January 6 bakeoff should be quite revealing, when the Visual Effects branch votes for the five nominees.
