While sci-fi epics and action-adventures have dominated theaters over the past few months, two fresh genres are looking to shake things up at the domestic box office.
Horror thriller “A Quiet Place” and R-rated comedy “Blockers” are expected to have solid openings this weekend, with the former likely to take the crown.
Paramount Pictures’ “A Quiet Place” — John Krasinski’s third directorial effort and first for a major studio — could launch to as much as $30 million from 3,200 locations, but other estimates are in the low-$20 millions. The film, which opened at South by Southwest to rave reviews, currently boasts a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
“The Office” star Krasinski co-wrote the movie and stars alongside his real-life wife, Emily Blunt. The pic follows a family of four who must live in silence while hiding from creatures that hunt by sound.
Another title hoping to translate SXSW enthusiasm into box office success is Universal’s “Blockers.

Chicago – It’s challenging to enjoy this film purely for what it is rather than fault it for what it could have been. “Island of Lemurs: Madagascar,” which opened exclusively in IMAX 3D and 2D on April 4, 2014 and is narrated by Morgan Freeman, is only 39 minutes. The film too simply grazes the surface of a complicated problem.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
It feels like an elementary-school field trip rather than a film ready for nationwide IMAX distribution. It’s tough to tell if that’s because it was so expensive to film with IMAX cameras or because that’s as much of a story as is warranted by this adorable arboreal primate who is getting marketed as “nature’s greatest explorer”.
Read Adam Fendelman’s full review of “Island of Lemurs: Madagascar”.
Either way, it’s an incomplete project that only starts to touch the surface of elements it needed to be a full body of work.

Jakarta, Indonesia — One of the orangutans starring in the IMAX film "Born to Be Wild" has been treated to a special jungle screening in Indonesia – and was captivated until the trumpet of elephants scared her off.
The documentary follows two women who have devoted their lives to caring for orphaned animals – Birute Galdikas in Indonesia and Daphne Sheldrick in Kenya.
Initially, Wednesday's screening on Borneo island was going to be held outside, but rain forced everyone into a hut.
Producer Drew Fellman said Thursday that Siswi – the daughter of one of the first orangutans Galdikas cared for – sat in the doorway and was engaged for the first 15 minutes.
But Fellman said that once the elephants arrived and started getting boisterous, Siswi got uncomfortable and ran off and climbed into a tree.

I love "Born to Be Wild 3D," a thoughtful, insightful, and entertaining documentary from director David Lickley, and writer/producer Drew Fellman.

First stop, Morgan Freeman. Meeting the actor was a blessing! He is a great actor and an equally great human being. His fantastic narration anchors .Born to Be Wild 3D. and his storytelling voice pulls us right into the narrative.
In this interview, Mr. Freeman calls me the happiest person on earth
We also talked about:
His interest in working in .Born to Be Wild 3D.
The narrative constructs of the film, and was he instructed in finding the right storytelling rhythm?
Helping the helpless animals
I adore Dr. Birute Galdikas, the fairy...

While spending 40 minutes listening to the smooth tones of Oscar winner Morgan Freeman is enough to endear an audience member, adding über-adorable primates and pachyderms makes “Born to Be Wild 3D” an outing for which it’s worth babysitting your sister’s kids.
Focused on two incredibly courageous and compassionate women, Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas and Dr. Dame Daphne M. Life, death, poaching and deforestation are handled deftly and sensitively for the “G” rating on the film and should ensure that school groups everywhere are given a green light to board excursion buses accompanied by thematically appropriate popcorn substitutes (we suggest banana chips and peanuts).

In Born To Be Wild 3D, director David Lickley brings his audience not one, but two unforgettable stories about the depths of human compassion and animal resilience. The film follows the startlingly similar stories of Dr. Birute Mary Galidakas (who runs the Orangutan Care Center and Quarantine in Borneo) and Dr. Dame Daphne M. Sheldrick (who runs a similar organization in Kenya, but in service to elephants). Both women have dedicated their lives to healing and helping orphaned animals, and both have pioneered new methods of doing so with the aim of returning those orphans to the wild.
