A pact between Apple Original Films, A24, Spike Lee, and Denzel Washington is making noise this Thursday with news about a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime drama High and Low. Lee and Washington are old friends, of course, with the duo’s fourth collaboration being for 2006’s Inside Man.
In Kurosawa’s High and Low, an executive of a Yokohama shoe company becomes a victim of extortion when his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped by mistake and held for ransom. Details about Lee’s remake are scarce, though we know it will be an English-language reimagining of the original—details about how and if the plot will differ from Kurosawa’s classic crime drama remains a mystery.
Alan Fox and Lee wrote the screenplay for the High and Low remake, with A24, Escape Artists, and Mandalay Pictures handling development. Production kicks off in March, with Todd Black producing for...

Denzel Washington and his wife, Pauletta Washington, have built a beautiful family together over the years. The couple first met on the set of 1977's "Wilma," but it wasn't until a few months later that sparks flew at a mutual friend's party, per People. The stars officially tied the knot in 1983, then welcomed their first child - son John David Washington - in 1984. Two years later, their daughter Katia Washington was born, and in 1991, Denzel and Pauletta became parents of four with the arrival of their twins Malcolm and Olivia Washington.
Once the couple began expanding their family, Pauletta stepped back from acting in order to raise their four children, and the "Malcolm X" star is grateful for everything his wife has done for their family. While accepting the American Film Institute's lifetime achievement award in 2019, Denzel used his speech to thank Pauletta for being their children's primary caretaker. "My...

Utopia has acquired the U.S. rights to writer-director-producer Lena Dunham’s Sundance comedy “Sharp Stick,” which follows a young woman’s unexpected quest of sexual exploration and self-discovery, Utopia announced on Monday.
Utopia will release the film theatrically in the U.S. later this year.
“I’ve been so impressed with how quickly Utopia has established itself as a brave and committed voice in independent and experimental film,” Dunham said in a statement. “They don’t cower from unusual or divisive work, and they have utter respect for the filmmakers’ voice, and I couldn’t feel luckier to be releasing Sharp Stick under their auspices.”
In her first feature since her 2010 debut, “Tiny Furniture,” Dunham drew from her own medical experiences for ”Sharp Stick,” which premiered at last month’s Sundance film festival.

Lena Dunham just wrapped her first feature film as a writer-director in over a decade.
“Sharp Stick,” an indie financed by FilmNation that will screen footage for potential buyers on Tuesday out of the European Film Market during the Berlin Festival, was shot successfully in secret and in compliance with Covid-19 protocols in Los Angeles over the past months.
While plot details are under wraps, the film stars Kristine Froseth, Taylour Paige, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jon Bernthal (“Ford v Ferrari)”, Scott Speedman and Dunham. The production, which boasted almost exclusively female department heads, was made through Dunham’s company Good Thing Going.
“I made my last feature film 11 years ago in my family home with just a few close friends. It’s a testament to FilmNation and my incredible producers, cast, crew and — especially — my Covid-19 compliance team that this experience felt just as intimate and creatively free,” Dunham told Variety.

Zendaya wanted to work. But because the world was in lockdown due to the pandemic, she knew that the start of the second season of her HBO drama series “Euphoria” was delayed. So, the 24-year-old (the youngest woman to ever win the Best Drama Actress Emmy for her role as a recovering teen drug addict) frequently talked to the series’ creator/executive producer/writer/director Sam Levinson. During one of the conversations, the concept of shooting something during quarantine was discussed. And that is how “Malcolm & Marie” was born.
Though Netflix isn’t releasing the romantic drama until Feb. 5, there has already been a lot of awards discussion for the two-character chamber piece starring Zendaya and John David Washington as a young couple whose relationship is at the crossroads. Malcolm and Marie return from the premiere of his latest movie and as they wait for the reviews to appear, she...

Exclusive: Netflix continues to set the tone for the 2020 Toronto Film Festival Market. Deadline hears that the streamer is wrapping up a deal near $30 million for worldwide rights to Malcolm & Marie, a Sam Levinson-directed romantic drama that stars Zendaya and John David Washington. This follows the around $20 million Netflix deal for the Halle Berry-directed Bruised, the fest’s first major deal made before the film’s premiere. Netflix yesterday acquired Pieces Of A Woman, which won the Best Actress prize for Vanessa Kirby at Venice.

There was a stampede for this one, and I’m told that others in the mix were HBO, Amazon, Searchlight, MGM, Apple, A24 and Focus Features. While the pandemic seemed likely to throw a wet...
