Right-wing viewers will balk early, leaving Michael Moore preaching to the already-converted
7 March 2004
Sly documentarian Michael Moore examines America's fascination with guns (and not just its fascination, but also its fear of violence and race relations brought on by the media, by entertainment, by politics, and by poverty). There's a lot to engage your mind here (old film clips, Columbine High School security-camera footage, an animated look at the History of America, a funny segue to Canada where the gun-violence rate is much lower, etc.). Still, Moore's "ambushing" style can be excruciating to watch, especially when he takes two Columbine survivors to the headquarters of K-Mart (who sold the bullets) and makes everybody there REALLY uncomfortable. I'm not sure Moore's sincerity is always 100% true, but he is a tireless worker, deadpan sarcastic and ironic with his presentation, and seemingly unafraid to defend the little guy. He's a definite left-wing liberal, and that will turn some viewers off, but those who stay will get an interesting dose of Moore's world--and he has the power to open minds when he's not wearing out his topic. **1/2 from ****
