The Return (2003)
7/10
it really hits you

I saw "Vozvrashscheniye" (called "The Return" in English) at the 2004 Portland International Film Festival. The story of a father who returns home and meets his sons for the first time, and then takes them on a trip that ends in tragedy, is like a kick in the stomach. In a way, it might reflect how the Russian people feel about the path that their country took after the Cold War ended, although every Russian story seems to be either dead serious or tragic. This is one movie that I will never forget. Magnificent.

On a sad note, Vladimir Garin - who played son Ivan in the movie - drowned in 2003 in the lake that was used in the movie. Why does everything associated with Russia have to be tragic?
