Review of The Return

The Return (2003)
6/10
Overrated, OK but not that deep

Warning: Spoilers
This was not a bad movie. Nor was it the amazing emotional journey that some people say it is.

Minor spoilers ahead.

The box is to the audience what the father is to the two boys - an enigma, something that may or may not have held the promise of a wonderful future. Was the box a treasure? A sign of trouble to come? Or a big nothing? If we trusted that the box held good things, as the older boy placed his trust in his father, would we be right to do so? We'll never know.

That's the message of the movie in a nutshell. Who is this man, and what should he mean to the boys? Is he a lost treasure, or someone whose presence made no difference at all? The boys don't know what they feel, or even what they ought to feel. And that's pretty much it. It was a decent movie, but there wasn't enough to it to merit anything close to a 10/10.
