Michael J. Fox is sharing his thoughts on how Hollywood has changed over the decades.
In a recent interview with People magazine, the Emmy-winning actor, who rose to fame in the 1980s following his roles in Palmerstown U.S.A., Night Court, Family Ties and Back to the Future, compared the entertainment industry now to when he got his start.
“There’s an expression I referred to when they gave me an honorary Academy Award — somebody said to me the day before, they were talking about getting this award and being famous and they said ‘You’re ‘80s famous,’” Fox recalled. “I thought, wow, that’s cool. ‘80s famous. Right, we were different.”
He added, “We were tougher. We didn’t have social media, we didn’t have any of that crap. We were just famous. Left to our own resources. And it was an amazing time.”

Michael J. Fox has reflected on what it was like to be “’80s Famous,” and feels that he had to be “tougher” to achieve that level of fame.
In an interview with People, Fox surveyed his various magazine covers over the years and discussed his career journey. When bringing up the honorary Academy Award he received in 2022, he mentions that someone had called him “’80s Famous.” “I thought, wow, that’s cool. ‘80s famous. Right, we were different,” Fox said.
“We were tougher. We didn’t have social media, we didn’t have any of that crap. We were just famous. Left to our own resources. And it was an amazing time.” Fox was asked if being famous back then was harder than now, he replied, “Well, you had to be talented. That helped.”

The comedy realm is dealt another big blow as the world says goodbye to Joe Flaherty. According to Exclaim, the Sctv legend had been dealing with a sickness and was said to be “very ill.” In late February, Flaherty’s Second City brother, Martin Short, sent a message to their Sctv peers to fundraise for his home care in his last days, which amounted to $20K a month. Short had said that they had been made aware of the gravity of his condition and Flaherty chose to spend the rest of his life at home with his daughter rather than at a facility. The message would hit social media.
In Short’s fundraising message, he says, “We are writing to our friends because we believe Sctv meant something to you, and that would not be the case if it were not for Joe Flaherty. He was a mentor, a director,...

Back to the Future is often hailed as one of the timeless classics in the realm of the sci-fi genre. It was not the first film that introduced the concept of time travel, and certainly, it won’t be the last with this similar idea. However, what sets this film apart is how much love it has garnered from the fans.
A still from Back to the Future
The film was unique in its very core, as it not only introduced a light and easy-to-understand plot but also intriguing gadgets that viewers desired to have. One of them is Nike Mag, which set the trend with its sleek design and self-lacing technology. The sneaker became a coveted item for sneakerheads, who were drawn by it, however, its price stopped it from being in the collection of the richest collectors and even Conor McGregor and Jake Gyllenhaal were astounded to hear its price.

As Hollywood consistently churns out box office hits, it’s common for successful films to spawn franchises in pursuit of continued success through sequels, prequels, spin-offs, and many other ways. However, some of these sequels don’t always stay up to the mark. Following are several examples of movies where Hollywood’s pursuit of extending classic hits led to disappointing sequels.
Back to The Future Part II
Released in 1985, the original Back to The Future stood out as one of the defining blockbusters of the 1980s with its enduring legacy spanning nearly four decades as one of the most cherished and influential films of all time.

When /Film published the massive 2023 Holiday Gift Guide last year, we highlighted an incredibly cool custom sneaker shop delivering amazing kicks with designs inspired by your favorite movies and TV shows. From "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" to "RoboCop" and even "Captain Planet," the sneaker kings at Bull Airs have been churning out some outstanding custom creations. But their latest offering just might be the best.
Inspired by "Back to the Future Part II" (but not official merchandise), Bull Airs is releasing their own custom Nike Air Mag sneakers that take a cue from the self-lacing shoes that appear in the time traveling sequel. No, they don't self-lace, but they look just like the shoes seen in the movie, albeit with a little bit of a Bull Airs touch. Two-parter movies are not a new concept. They have always existed in Hollywood, but back then, they were extremely rare. Films like Back to the Future Part II and III and Kill Bill: Volume 1 and 2 weren’t commonplace; they were exceptions to the rule. But today, it seems like every other major blockbuster is a two-parter. Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning only gave us one-half of the reckoning. Fast X was promised to be “the beginning of the end”, but they took it quite literally and sliced it into two parts. Across the Spider-Verse also ended on a “to...

Whenever the future is depicted in movies, it is generally a dark, depressing dystopian future where something happens in our present that sets forth the collapse of our society. Even Disney is not immune to showing us a future where Earth is no longer inhabitable (the beloved Wall-e). But occasionally, a movie shows a future that doesn’t look so bad—one with self-lacing shoes, 19 Jaws movies and flying cars. Of course, if we are being technical, this movie is also in the past. It’s time for us to hop in our DeLorean, generate the necessary 1.21 Jigowatts and travel to the futuristic world of October 21, 2015, as we take a look at what Back to the Future Part II got right and wrong about the future of technology… from eight years ago!

Robert Zemeckis' blockbuster "Back to the Future Part II" was released in November 1989, and it expanded on the lore from the first. In the 1984 original, Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) went back in time to the 1950s when his parents were teenagers ... and not terribly interested in each other. To ensure he gets born, Marty has to arrange circumstances so that his mom and dad start dating. In "Part II," Marty is enlisted by Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) to travel to the far-flung future of 2015 to make sure that his kids stay out of legal trouble; this will be easy to do, as Marty's son (also Fox) happens to look just like him.
And, no, hoverboards aren't real. That was a rumor Zemeckis started himself.
The "Back to the Future" movies play fast and loose with causality but offer audiences a chance to feel like they're smart. In short, they're a hoot,...

Back to the Future is considered to be one of the greatest time travel films ever made. Having become a hit in the mid-’80s, the sci–fi classic has been discovered by fresh eyes in the four decades since its release with each new wave of fans fascinated by its behind the scenes trivia.
Do you remember the first time you heard that Michael J. Fox wasn’t originally cast as Marty McFly? Did you know that Marty’s mentor Doc Brown was supposed to have a pet chimp instead of a dog called Einstein?

The concept of time travel, though usually lumped in with science fiction, is actually far closer to fantasy. The notion is rooted in nostalgia, the collective unconscious assumption that there was such a thing as "the good old days." It's also borne out of an interest in history, which as "The Holdovers" so recently and succinctly stated, is really an interest in knowing more about ourselves. While actual time travel will likely never exist, a particular form of it has already existed for over 100 years: cinema.
If poring through film history allows a viewer to ostensibly travel through time, then it only follows that cinema would be a natural tool to examine history and time travel as well. When co-writer and producer Bob Gale hit upon his father's old high school yearbook one day and wondered if he and his father would've been friends (let alone like each other) had...

After conquering the music world, pop superstar Lil Nas X is testing the realm of movie stardom. He’s in Toronto — attending a film festival for the first time — for the world premiere of his documentary “Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero.”
The screening was delayed because of a bomb threat from a homophobic caller, but despite that scare, the mood in the Roy Thomson Theater was jubilant as the documentary finally began to play around 10:30 p.m.
During a brief Q&a following the premiere, Nas, a consummate entertainer and comedic force to be reckoned with, admitted he was a reluctant documentary subject. “I’m going to be honest. I was like, ‘I don’t want to do this at all. This is a terrible idea.’ But then I was like, ‘Fuck it, let’s do it anyway.’ I hate people knowing about my life because I can’t keep my funny persona.

Is there any movie with more "movie" crammed into it than "Avengers: Endgame"? As the climax of The Infinity Saga, the film was tasked with capping off a shared narrative spread out across 21 Marvel Cinematic Universe movies released over 11 years. It's a film that goes from playing like the McU's answer to "The Leftovers" to an "Ocean's Eleven"-styled assembling-the-heist-crew flick to a zippy time-travel adventure that sees characters stealthily revisiting their pasts like they're Marty McFly trying to avoid running into himself in "Back to the Future Part II." And that's all before the ginormous third-act battle, in which virtually everyone who's ever popped up in an MCU film before joins forces to collectively wail on the villainous Thanos (Josh Brolin) and his army for a solid half-hour (if not longer).

There will also be special, as-yet-unannounced guests. It will be performed at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts’ Bram Goldsmith Theater this Saturday, June 24.

If the rousing strains of a Danny Elfman theme didn’t make it clear, if the image of a jagged batlike aircraft in the sky didn’t do the trick, the sight of Michael Keaton back in black rubber should: The Flash, the long-delayed superhero extravaganza that raced into multiplexes this weekend, operates in the long shadow of an iconic predecessor, one of the first major comic-book movies, Tim Burton’s original Batman. Yet it’s a different hit from 1989, one that opened just a few months after Burton’s,...

This article contains major spoilers for The Flash.
Ever since Ezra Miller’s The Flash was briefly retitled Flashpoint in the late 2010s, there has been a lot of expectation (and desperation?) from Warner Bros. Pictures. Could this mark a fresh start—a chance for Miller’s speedster to travel back to the past and, in so doing, accidentally reset the DC Extended Universe into something a little more pleasing for fans and studio executives alike?
That calculus has of course changed multiple times over the years, and in the interim, The Flash began to look less like a clean slate than it did a last hurrah. Instead of a pivot, the film could very well be a wake, a eulogy, and a fond farewell to 10 years of erratic Dceu storytelling. Going in, you might even think the movie will be nothing but a fan service smorgasbord, with Michael Keaton...

I miss the 80s: big hair, parachute pants, collectible toys, and amazingly nostalgic kid-friendly movies. I could watch the best 80s movies from my childhood over and over. And I sometimes do.
Be honest. How many of you poured water on something hoping it would multiply like Gremlins? And did you try attaching a milk crate to the front of your bike like Elliot in “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial?“
How many of us are still hooked on Baby Ruth (“Goonies“) and Reese’s Pieces (also “E.T.“) thanks to excellent product placement? I still won’t go near the TV at night if it has ants racing.

Picking the ten best kid-friendly movies from the 80s can be tricky and highly subjective. We tried to be objective by using IMDb as our ranking source. And we stuck to movies with child and teen-related themes targeted at broad audiences.

The Flash may be the fastest man alive, but his upcoming movie has had a slow crawl to release. We've previously documented the full timeline of production on "The Flash" and the many different directors and writers who've been at the helm. In 2015, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller ("The Lego Movie") were hired to write a treatment for "The Flash," with an option to direct. They instead chose to board "Solo: A Star Wars Story" as co-directors, but were later fired from that movie and replaced with Ron Howard. Fortunately, they got a second shot at the world of superheroes with "Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse".
The final version of "The Flash" was directed by Andy Muschietti ("It") and written by John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein ("Spider-Man: Homecoming"), and Joby Harold ("Army of the Dead"). However, Lord and Miller retain off-screen writing credits for "additional material," indicating that elements of their...

We're a little over a week out from the release of "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" — the highly-anticipated sequel to the 2018 Oscar-winning movie — and the first reactions to the film have arrived on social media. And according to critics who were lucky enough to catch an early screening, "Across the Spider-Verse" is "terrific," an "incredible accomplishment," and the "ultimate Spider-Man experience." As you might've expected, everyone is going ga-ga over the work put into the animation, noting how it's "impossible to see it all [and] experience it all in one sitting."
Collider's Steven Weintraub echoed that with his reaction: "Absolutely loved ['Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.'] Wanted to push pause about a hundred times to study the incredible artistry on display. Cannot recommend this film enough and already looking forward to seeing it again." Characters being highlighted include "Get Out" star Daniel Kaluuya's Hobart "Hobie" Brown/Spider-Punk who uses a guitar as a weapon,...

To address the rumors again: no, hoverboards were not real. It was director Robert Zemeckis himself that deliberately began the rumor while working on "Back to the Future Part II," once conducting a behind-the-scenes interview where he winkingly suggested the infamous untruth. He claimed that hoverboards had been around for years, but that "parents groups" prevented them from being sold in toy shops. Those who were around 10 years old in 1988 will likely recall spreading rumors that the hoverboards were real, but merely too dangerous for kids to use. It was, of course, all a playful hoax.
The hoverboard scenes in "Back to the Future Part II" were astonishing at the time, and Zemeckis used a complex combination of techniques to film them. When filming from low angles, Zemeckis suspended his actors from above. He used cranes and pulleys, green-screen effects, and some dedicated stunt people to achieve the visuals.

Elijah Wood may be having a bit of a moment with "Yellowjackets," but it's far from his only headline-grabbing role. Wood has been steadily working on our screens since the late 1980s, with a varied career that includes acting in TV and movies, doing voice work, producing and writing, and more.
While Wood definitely has become a permanent fixture in pop culture thanks to his role in "The Lord of the Rings," his career is much more eclectic and varied than just the blockbusters. He's the kind of actor who seems to delight in taking unusual and creative projects, with roles ranging from outright comedy and family-friendly hits to thrillers, dark dramas, and everything in between. Let's take a look back at some of his big-screen highlights over the years.

"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is a film steeped in nostalgia, and frankly, even more nostalgia than we're used to.
Lots of movies try to evoke pleasant childhood memories of popular characters and stories, but in this film, almost every frame and every sound pays homage to the vast history of the beloved video game franchise. Iconic characters and locales, sound effects and musical themes; this is a movie that depends, in every way, on the audience's familiarity with the history of "Super Mario Bros." in all of its previous incarnations.
But the homages don't stop there, and they don't stop until the lights come up in the theater. The very last plot point in "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is a weirdly explicit reference to a very weird movie, a movie that was notoriously unpopular and unsuccessful, and which failed to launch a popular franchise despite a big cast,...

While it's now several years late for Max Spielberg to crank out Jaws 19 (as promised by Back To The Future Part II's 2015), one of his siblings is keeping the Spielberg directorial flag flying, as Destry Allyn Spielberg is on to make her feature directorial debut with horror movie Please Don't Feed The Children, which will star Michelle Dockery.
Written by Paul Bertino, the psychological thriller is set after a viral outbreak has ravaged the country’s adult population. A group of orphans heads south in search of a new life, only to find themselves at the mercy of a deranged woman harboring a dangerous secret.
“I am so grateful to have the opportunity to bring this story to the screen with such a collaborative and inspirational team. This picture is so much more than just a horror film. It’s a dream come true to work with a talent such as Michelle Dockery.

Christopher Landon wants to show you that he’s more than just the maestro behind two beloved comedic slasher properties, Happy Death Day and Freaky. His new supernatural family dramedy, We Have a Ghost, is not only a jump to a new subgenre, but it’s also a leap to bigger-budget filming, as his three recent Blumhouse films cost less than $20 million combined. Landon’s pivot has both personal and professional motivations attached to it, in that he wanted to be able to share his work with his oldest child and not repeat himself at the same time.
“I just didn’t want to get pigeonholed. I don’t want to have to make the same movie over and over again, and if you want something to change in your career, you have to kind of figure it out yourself,” Landon tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Thompson, who played Lorraine Baines-McFly in the film trilogy, took to social media on Saturday to share photos with her former co-stars. “Wow honestly had the best time today with my #bttf family,” she wrote in the post’s caption. “So many fun fan moments too.”
Included in her Instagram carousel were videos of her reconnecting with Lloyd, who starred as Dr. Emmett Brown in the cult-classic franchise, and Wilson, who played Biff Tannen.
“Look who’s here, look what the cat dragged in,” Thompson said of Lloyd in one video as she’s embraced by the Who Framed Roger Rabbit actor.
In another video, the actress said, “My favorite, favorite guy ever,” to Wilson. He responds, “I love this lady.

20 years ago, Peyton Reed developed a 1960s-set Fantastic Four film at Fox that never quite came together, but now, with Reed’s third MCU movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, on the verge of release, he’s finally able to close the book on “The Four.” Reed is now tied with Jon Watts and James Gunn for directing the second-most number of MCU films behind the Russo Brothers’ four titles, and Quantumania really allowed the filmmaker to incorporate some of the elements he loved from his days of reading Fantastic Four comics as a kid.
“My first memory of reading about the Microverse in the comics, which became the Quantum Realm, was a Fantastic Four story where Dr. Doom shrunk the Four down into the Microverse,” Reed tells The Hollywood Reporter. “So I really took that passion and transferred it into this thing. And honestly, now that they’re actually making a Fantastic Four movie,...

Breathing fresh life into the rom-com genre, Raine Allen Miller’s Rye Lane is a delight. Premiering at Sundance, it pays affectionate tribute to its forebears while injecting a youthful British energy reminiscent of seminal TV shows such as Skins. This is a sunny, irreverent take on life and love, following two strangers over the course of one eventful day, and more — though it’s at its most exhilarating when playing out in real time, Before Sunrise-style.

We would have gotten together to remember Richard. Hug your friends today.”

Doctor Emmett Brown and Marty McFly reunited for one more whirlwind adventure at New York Comic Con on Oct. 8. As part of a "Back to the Future" reunion panel at the convention, Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox sat down to reminisce about their days in the DeLorean.
