British actor and satirist John Bird has died aged 86.
The Bremner, Bird and Fortune star passed away “peacefully” on Christmas Eve at a care home in West Sussex, UK, according to his representatives.
Bremner, Bird and Fortune, which was from Vera Productions, ran for 16 seasons in the UK on Channel 4, ending in 2008.
His long-time comedy partner Rory Bremner led the tributes, writing on Twitter he was “deeply saddened to hear that the great John Bird has left us. One of the most modest of men and most brilliant of satirists. And one of the last surviving pillars of the anti-establishment.”
Bremner urged people to view Bird and John Fortunes’ ‘Long Johns’ comedy sketch interviews, in which they played members of the establishment, “and ask yourself if it’s ever been more beautifully done.

“I used to watch from the wings and marvel at how the two friends made it look so effortless, so blissfully funny, their skill and enjoyment in the moment making light of the seriously detailed research that went into each piece.”
Bird also worked with Fortune and Bremner on Rory Bremner, Who Else? for Channel 4 and the BBC’s Now Something Else.
Fortune died aged 74 on New Year’s Eve 2013.
“Lord knows, satire has missed them this last decade and now that loss is permanent,” said Bremner. “John may not have felt he got his life right, but by god he got it written.”
Bird met Fortune at Cambridge University, where he was part of the famous Cambridge Footlights Revue, where his contemporaries included Peter Cook.
His career included spells at the Royal Court Theatre and acted in fantasy comedy film Jabberwocky, UK comedy series Yes, Prime Minister and One Foot in the Grave, and also played Professor Plum in a TV adaptation of board game Cluedo. He also appeared in popular British detective shows Jonathan Creek, Inspector Morse and Midsomer Murders.
He is survived by wife Libby and two stepsons.

Some people must continuously battle against a long series of problems, some of which they inadvertently create for themselves. But it’s the efforts they take, no matter how hilarious they may ultimately prove to be, to overcome those misfortunes and misunderstandings that prove their true character. That’s certainly the case for actor Victor Meldrew’s protagonist […]

Somewhere inside every album Beck has made since Mellow Gold — his 1994 surprise attack of slippery irony and hip-hop bravado — is the solo folk-blues singer caught on that year’s One Foot in the Grave, writing about despair with a surrealist edge while turned toward hope. That is the Beck who jumps out here in “Saw Lightning,” in looping spasms of acoustic, skidding Delta slide guitar.
Most of the song’s apocalypse comes in contemporary kicks. Beck sings of great fire and flooding, praying for rescue in a strident android’s...

If you can judge an audience’s excitement by the number of camera phones hoisted into the air, then two moments stand out for the Los Angeles event dubbed Malibu Love Sesh. First, was when Jack Black made a cameo in the middle of Beck’s set. The second was simply when headliners Red Hot Chili Peppers burst into “Californication.”

Planning some light viewing on Sunday? If so, beware: not all movies tagged with ‘mother’ on streaming sites are entirely family-friendly
We’ve all been there: you type “Transsiberian” into a streaming service once and spend the next three weeks fighting off the Transformers franchise. Botched film recommendations have been a thing since the VHS era. Remember the episode of One Foot in the Grave when Victor Meldrew discovers Mrs Warboys is a Mork & Mindy fan and accidentally rents Alien? Given the prevalence of the “because you watched …” algorithm, here are seven films tagged “mother” that should be avoided at all costs this Sunday. Do not add to basket, and be prepared to lunge for the remote should mum’s thumb hover over play. Caution: spoilers.

Stars: Charlie Cox, Billy Cook, Freema Agyeman, Robert Portal, Mackenzie Crook, Eve Myles, Vincent Regan, Tony Curran, Dexter Fletcher, Ruth Jones, Annette Crosbie | Written by Danny King | Directed by Jason Flemyng
The directorial debut of actor Jason Flemyng, this low budget British horror-comedy has a solid cast and a moderately intriguing premise, but it can’t quite decide whether it wants to go for scares or laughs and ends up falling awkwardly between the two.
Written by Danny King (Wild Bill), Eat Locals (originally Eat Local, with an ‘s’ being added in the marketing stage) centres on a coven of centuries-old vampires – including Daredevil’s Charlie Cox, Doctor Who’s Freema Agyeman and One Foot in the Grave‘s Annette Crosbie – convening for their semi-centennial meeting at a remote country farmhouse. Also present is naïve orphan Sebastian (Billy Cook), who thinks he’s on a promise with vampish Vanessa (Eve Myles,...

The directorial debut of actor Jason Flemyng (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, X-Men: First Class), Eat Locals is an action-packed and darkly comic thriller of supernatural proportions, blending gut-busting laughs with blood-spattered shocks – which reunites the cast of Guy Ritchie’s crime comedy Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, with Nick Moran and Dexter Fletcher both starring and Jason Statham directing the fight scenes!
Billed as “Assault On Precinct 13 meets Interview With A Vampire,” Eat Locals is the story of a coven of bloodsuckers whose bark is almost as bad as their bite. The film stars a plethora of experience actors: Charlie Cox (Stardust, Daredevil), Freema Agyeman (Dr. Who, Sense 8), Mackenzie Crook (Pirates Of The Caribbean, Game of Thrones), Tony Curran (Underworld: Evolution, League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen), Eve Myles (Torchwood), Ruth Jones (Gavin & Stacey, Stella), Annette Crosbie (One Foot In The Grave, Into The Woods) and Vincent Regan (300, Snow White & The Huntsman,...

We celebrate the work of M.R. James, whose eerie ghost stories were made into a festive tradition by the BBC...
A shadow lurking just beyond the edge of the vision. Dusty manuscripts bearing fragments of ancient testimony, conflicting and confounding. The sickening touch of a decayed hand, grasping at us from the darkness. Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence on a spaceship with Michael Sheen serving the drinks. We take a look at the sci-fi romance, Passengers...
It’s not a very scintillating title, Passengers, is it? Especially for a film about a kilometre-long ship hurtling through space with the two romantic leads trapped inside it. Love’s Labour's Lost In Space might have suited it better, had Futurama not beaten screenwriter Jon Spaihts to the punch by about 17 years. So Passengers it is: the latest film from Norwegian director Mortum Tyldum, who previously brought us the superb Jo Nesbo-adapted thriller Headhunters and Oscar-nominated Alan Turing drama, The Imitation Game.

Since the medium’s infancy, viewers have enjoyed sharing holidays with their favourite television characters. We grow invested in our friends on screen over the years; spending Christmas with them is a rite of passage, a chance for us to share tradition from our world with the fictional ones we see on screen. Some shows embrace the season wholeheartedly, characters in good spirits and enjoying the trappings of the season; others skew a little darker, bringing the more oppressive, burdensome side of the holidays to life. April 21, 1995 – would that be the day the ice age ended?
Well, no, you can't be that precise about the ice age. But it would be the day that Father Ted debuted on Channel 4.
It's hard to believe, but it's been 20 years since we first met Father Ted Crilly, Father Dougal McGuire, Father Jack Hackett and Mrs Doyle. We came to the Parochial House looking for a cup of tea and a Jaffa cake, and decided to stay longer than Father Stone.
Two decades on, and Graham Linehan and Arthur Matthews' sitcom is still as clever, fresh and fecking hilarious as it was back then. And it's not difficult to see why the show about three priests and their housekeeper trapped on Craggy Island has enjoyed such longevity, or to argue why it is the greatest TV comedy ever made.

Richard Wilson has told Digital Spy that the BBC have talked to him about starring in a sitcom.
The actor, who is most famous for roles in Merlin and One Foot in the Grave, said that he wasn't sure whether the project would go ahead.
Wilson told DS: "I wouldn't mind considering another sitcom. The BBC have talked about me coming back to do something, but I don't know whether that will happen.
"The trouble with One Foot in the Grave was it was so well-written by David Renwick, it's very hard to find something as good as that."
Wilson is currently fronting ITV's Richard Wilson's On the Road, in which he tours the UK in his vintage car using Shell Guides that were first published in the 1930s.
Asked if he planned to present more factual television, Wilson replied: "No, no. I can still consider myself an active actor,...

We asked Den Of Geek’s writers to recommend brilliant comedy shows that deserve to have more of a fuss made about them. Here they are...
Banging a drum about stuff we love is more or less our remit on Den Of Geek - hence what many readers have started referring to as the ‘inexplicably regular' appearance of Statham, squirrels and Harold Bishop from Neighbours on these pages.
To that end then, we asked our writers which comedy shows (past and present, UK or otherwise, on TV, radio, or online…) deserved more praise, and here are the ones they chose. You might already like them too, or you might discover something new to dig out and enjoy. That’s the fun of it.
Please note that this list isn’t ranked in any order, nor is it exhaustive. It’s compiled from the opinions of a group of different people,...

Ricky Gervais has confirmed that The Office's David Brent will be heading to the big screen with his own movie, Life on the Road.
So as we anticipate what Brent has been up to since the end of the BBC hit comedy, here's what the cast have done since:
Ricky Gervais
Ricky Gervais played the lead role as David Brent - the embarrassing, toe-curling and cringeworthy boss of company Wernham Hogg, devoid of self-awareness but poised with an unwavering love for the paper merchants he manages.
Gervais went on to create comedy Extras with Stephen Merchant, which was co-produced by the BBC and HBO and aired between 2005 and 2007. Gervais played ambitious actor Andy Millman, afflicted with a useless agent played by Merchant. Guest stars have included Patrick Stewart, Samuel L Jackson, Ben Stiller and Kate Winslet.
In 2009, Gervais starred in, wrote and directed his feature comedy debut The Invention of Lying.

The star of That Awkward Moment has used his 'go-getting mentality' to graduate from teen sitcom bit-parts to adult movie roles. He's even acclaimed as one of the 30 under-30s who is changing the world
"Women still want the old-fashioned love story, but it's 2014, and things are a little different now," says Michael B Jordan, authoritatively. "Thanks to Facebook, you can pretty much do a full background check on somebody before you even meet them, and with Tinder, you're constantly window-shopping." "Women still want the old-fashioned love story, but it's 2014, and things are a little different now," says Michael B Jordan, authoritatively. "Thanks to Facebook, you can pretty much do a full background check on somebody before you even meet them, and with Tinder, you're constantly window-shopping." Beck has not one, but two new albums coming out in the near future, according to Rolling Stone. The single-monikered singer-songwriter will self-release both records—one of which is said to be the acoustic heir to 1994’s One Foot In The Grave, while the other is supposedly “the proper follow-up to [2008’s] Modern Guilt.” There’s still no word on when those records will actually see the digital light of day, but considering they’re coming out on Beck’s terms, it could be anywhere from tomorrow to never. In the meantime, Rolling Stone says that at least ...

We spoke to wonderful TV writer David Renwick about bringing back Jonathan Creek, scrapped sitcoms, One Foot in the Grave and more...
Working in television writing since the seventies, and with a string of well-loved hits behind him including Not the Nine O'Clock News, One Foot in the Grave, and of course, Jonathan Creek, we spoke to David Renwick about bringing Creek back to the BBC, walking away from projects, and killing off Victor Meldrew...
So onto Jonathan Creek, first of all I was going to ask you about the three other episodes that have been announced for later this year...
Hopefully, hopefully.
Hopefully? Is it still dependant on something?
Well it might not happen if I fail to write something good. I shouldn’t be spreading doom and gloom and doubt and insecurities, although that’s my role! We hope to go into...

In Britain, the biannual charity extravaganza that is Comic Relief has a great track record for creating one-off comedy sketches, many based around established British shows and comedy characters. Past classics have included skits based around the likes of "Doctor Who," "Blackadder," "Gavin and Stacey," "One Foot in the Grave," "Da Ali G Show," "I'm Alan Partridge" and "Father Ted." Ricky Gervais has been involved many times before, perhaps most notably for the time he created an extremely funny sketch in which he appeared to be recording an appeal for aid from Africa. Well, Gervais returned with a new sketch at this year's Comic Relief, and this time he brought back David Brent. Aside from a couple of cameos on the U.S. version of "The Office," the last time that we'd seen Brent was when "The Office" Christmas specials aired back on December 26th and 27th of 2003, making this...

Jonathan Creek and One Foot in the Grave creator David Renwick has revealed that he "walked off" a new ITV series one month into pre-production.
Renwick's six-part comedy Ergo would have focused on the relationship between a young man and his mother-in-law, but the writer revealed that he departed the project after becoming "disenchanted with the notes coming down".
"I walked off a month into pre-production," he explained. "I thought, this is it - life's too short."
Renwick explained that while he offered ITV the chance to buy and rewrite his original scripts, the channel ultimately decided to "junk [the series] altogether".
"I did actually offer to sell them the scripts. because we were a month into pre-production - the director was on board, we'd been auditioning, locations were being scouted and money had been spent by ITV Studios," he said.

Richard Wilson, famous for One Foot In the Grave, and now Merlin, says that he does not mind people saying he's gay. "I don’t mind people saying I’m gay, because I am. But I don’t live in a gay relationship. That [being single] is probably why I go to counseling." Maybe that's where we were getting the gay vibe from in Merlin and not Merthur?

We may all remember him for sitcoms such as The Good Life – but his career encompassed everything from Doctor Who to Shakespeare. And who can forget the classic Roobarb?
With more than 50 years of work to his name, Richard Briers was one of the most instantly recognisable – and most beloved – actors in Britain. Much of this is down to his sitcom work, primarily The Good Life. Although it only ran for three years, The Good Life managed to latch onto a prevailing public mood – that of suburban alienation and a desire to connect with the earth – which is why it has been so endlessly repeated (and used as the basis for more than one reality show) over the years. Despite being the work he'll be most remembered for, Briers never got on with his character, often calling him stubborn and unlikable in the press.

The "Bachelor" commercials make it look as though Tierra completely loses her mind this week. So that's fun. But hilariously, the ABC intro says to start Valentine's week with a "Bachelor" that will stop our hearts. Somehow we don't think that will be the response.

Sean "Rule-Breaker" Lowe is at it again, flying to St. Croix with the women instead of traveling separately. Or the show's budget keeps getting squeezed and that little sea plane is the only way to get them all to the island. Next season, it'll be the Bachelor and six women on a raft with paddles. "Survivor," watch your back.
The hotel the women are at is gorgeous. I'm not really one for tropical vacations -- I'm one of those lame-os who'd rather be in rainy London going to theatrical productions and museums -- but that place looks amazing.

Blackadder is widely regarded as one of the greatest British sitcoms of all time but there is a real lack of quality in today’s modern British Sitcoms. Gone are the days of Only Fools and Horses, Fawlty Towers and One Foot in the Grave, instead we have underwhelming shows such as Miranda and Mrs. Brown’s Boys- hardly ‘must see’ TV.
We British aren’t used to the idea of American sitcoms besting ours, but sadly that is the case today. Our lacklustre contributions can hardly challenge the rise of such great American sitcoms as Community, How I Met Your Mother and The Big Bang Theory.
With British sitcoms currently disappointing and regularly being overshadowed by our American friends, is it time for a tried and tested classic like Blackadder to revive itself and the floundering British sitcom scene? We British need to somehow reclaim our title of the true Kings of Comedy.

One minute there's a Christmas present. The next minute it's taken away from you. Presumably, the sizeable army of Jonathan Creek fans found this when rumours of a 2012 Christmas special recently surfaced on the web. Alas, it turned out to be a false hope, since the main man himself Alan Davies said that the news was no more than a rumour and that nothing had been set up to compete alongside Time Lord festivities, Brucie's frosty-looking wig and Scrooge-esque happenings in Albert Square.
So what is it about Jonathan Creek that still brings the viewers back for more? The last Christmas special, The Grinning Man (broadcast in 2009) gained nearly 10 million viewers, a strong showing for the festive competition, suggesting that there was still a healthy demand for the unassuming fellah in the duffle coat. Basically, for the most part, it's a two-pronged mystery. Not only can it feature whodunnit elements,...

After the high profile and, what Hollywood execs like to call “high concept” shows of last week’s article, this week I will be going through new pilots which follow two trends I like to call “remaking is breaking” and “Desperate Housewives is over and Grey’s Anatomy has got to end sometime”.
Grey’s Anatomy and Desperate Housewives have been big ratings pulls in the coveted demographic (18-49 if you don’t know) for ABC and have meant big advertising bucks. And, even though Grey’s prolific creator Shonda Rhimes, who will be show running three to five shows next season depending on pickups, has claimed that Grey’s will move past eight seasons, there is a general sense that the show is on the decline and, coupled with the loss of Desperate Housewives at the end of the current season, there is a definite hole in the market.

(click to enlarge) Well, close the laptops and put the turkey in the oven, because this holiday weekend just officially kicked off with the above photo, because it’s the greatest thing to happen all year and we can seriously, for really real give Thanks this Thursday for its existence. Yes, that’s 6’7″ actor Stephen Merchant leaving the BBC Radio One studios with 3’6″ actor Warwick Davis — the ultimate Tally-Smally duo. They appeared together to discuss their new TV show called Life’s Too Short, a show described by co-creator Ricky Gervais as the “life of a showbiz dwarf.” He went on to describe the show as “a cross between Extras and Curb your Enthusiasm and One Foot in the Grave but with a dwarf,” which if I’m not mistaken — Yes? What’s that? Got it. — this is officially the best show description of all time. The show also boasts some big time celebrity cameos,...

As part of the media circus after Ricky Gervais’ ‘highly controversial’ awards hosting stint at the Golden Globes earlier this year, several newspapers reported that Johnny Depp was angry at the Brit comedian for basically taking the piss on stage over how much a failure his latest vehicle The Tourist had been with critics and at the box office. Which was a ludicrous claim given that Depp was shown laughing at Gervais’ jokes throughout the night but it made for a good story if nothing else.
Of course soon after the Globes, Johnny Depp agreed to appear in Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s new observational sitcom Life’s Too Short, which finally silenced those who thought Depp’s new number 1 Hollywood enemy was The Office creator!

Months ago, there were suspicions that The Inbetweeners Movie would be a bit of a disaster. It’s turned out to be anything but. So where did it go right?
Last Friday, I was one of many people who turned out for the first ‘official’ day of The Inbetweeners Movie screenings. Granted, there had been two days of previews, which had brought in a sizeable amount of cash (and then some). But what had intrigued me the most was the incredibly positive word of mouth that the film was getting.
Contrast that with the suspicions that were being banded about when the film was first announced, and when the maiden trailer appeared. A trailer that led to co-writer Iain Morris assuring us that the film was much better. Then there’s the small matter of the lack of press screenings (unless you happened to work for a lads’ magazine, it...

TV favourite Ruby Bentall takes stage role with director who cast her mother 30 years ago in the classic comedy Abigail's Party

In fact, the director has often returned to work with a small group of actresses whom he can trust to create memorable roles – Alison Steadman, Sheila Kelley, Lesley Manville and Imelda Staunton.

A lesser-known property from the late Douglas Adams (creator of The Hitch-Hiker’s Guide To The Galaxy), Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency was nevertheless a novel Adams thought would be easier to film than his revered sci-fi opus. Previously turned into radio plays with Harry Enfield as the gumshoe, BBC4 have decided to put Dirk Gently on-screen for the first time, adapted by in-demand screenwriter Howard Overman (Misfits, Vexed). Stephen Mangan (Green Wing) plays the eponymous sleuth, who believes in “the fundamental interconnectedness of all things”, and applies this theory of quantum mechanics to solve superficially innocuous crimes.
Overman has wisely excised much of the book’s budget-swallowing imagination into something achievable on a frugal budget; bringing the idea down-to-earth as an eccentric cousin to the BBC’s Sherlock update. Purists may grumble this isn’t the Dirk Gently they wanted to see, but it’s more accessible and practicable.

London, Oct 26 – Wrinkly rock star Ronnie Wood said no to alcohol after he discovered himself turning into grumpy Oap Victor Meldrew.
The Rolling Stones legend has been off drink for eight months after realizing it made him moan like Richard Wilson’s ‘One Foot In The Grave’ TV character. There was a point where it wasn’t working anymore. I was a grumpy old man,” the Sun quoted him as saying.
“I thought, ‘This is not me, I’m not like this. I shouldn’t be this grumpy git’,” he said.
The guitarist added of his teetotal life: “I’m like a newborn baby. I’m waking up and thinking, ‘Wow, I actually know.

A new study has found that Britons officially become grumpy at the age of 52. The research, carried out for TV channel Dave, found that we laugh just three times a day by the age of 50, compared with 300 times a day as children. So-called 'Victor Meldrew Syndrome' - named after the One Foot in the Grave character - apparently sets in at 52. Britons of this age are more likely to moan and complain, sending an average of 2.9 letters of complaint a year. Rows with neighbours also increase for people in their 50s. Over half of those questioned admitted to feuding with their next (more)...

Ray Winstone plays troubled hardmen with such conviction, it's easy to believe he's not acting. He talks about his violent past, happy-go-lucky nature and love of westerns
According to an old Fleet Street adage, it is a bad idea to interview your heroes. As I don't have very many, however, the situation seldom arises. But the warning began to make sense while I was getting ready to meet Ray Winstone, for it's hard not to be at least a bit in love with him. So if he turned out to be a twit, I worried, it would be disproportionately upsetting.
Winstone is the East End's answer to George Clooney – the opposite of a luvvie, unaffected and occasionally ungovernable, the kind of man with whom men want to get drunk, and women want to sleep. Haunting performances as a wife-beater in Nil by Mouth, and a retired robber in Sexy Beast,...

NBC's "The Office" is a remake of BBC's "The Office." It feels howlingly stupid to write this because it is assumed (rightly) that everyone knows this already. The reason everyone knows this has a lot to do with things that would probably take too much time to unpack in a Seriously Random List, like the heightened awareness among today's TV watchers of how their sausage is made as well as the surge in popularity and accessibility of foreign television thanks to DVDs and online streaming. But the takeaway is that there are and have been plenty of series that have found success here in the U.S. that were based on British shows, which is how this list came together. If you never knew that some of these shows were remakes, now you can impress and potentially bore people at parties. (If you already knew that each of these was a remake,...

Ricky Gervais is teaming up with his Extras co-star Warwick Davis for a new sitcom about the everyday life of a dwarf.
The BBC has commissioned The Office funnyman to write and oversee a pilot episode of observant comedy Life's Too Short, which will give an insight into Davis' world.
British actor Davis, who was born with dwarfism, is most famous for starring in 1980s fantasy film Willow and his recurring role as Professor Flitwick in the Harry Potter movie series.
Gervais, who makes a cameo appearance in Life's Too Short, insists the programme will be a quirky hit.
He says, ''It's a cross between Extras and Curb your Enthusiasm and (British TV comedy) One Foot in the Grave, but with a dwarf. That is out and out funny.
''We're having so much fun working with Warwick. Pound for pound he is one of the funniest men I know.''
Davis appeared in a 2005 episode of Gervias' TV hit Extras opposite his Harry Potter co-star Daniel Radcliffe.
