The 10 Things I Hate About You cast probably didn’t know it then, but the actors in the 1999 teen rom-com would get their breakout role. In the 25 years since its release, 10 Things I Hate About You has become a cult classic and a career highlight for its actors.
On the surface, 10 Things I Hate About You doesn’t sound like a recipe for success. A William Shakespeare play reworked into a teen comedy featuring a cast of mostly unknown actors? Critics didn’t fall head over heels for it in 1999, but the movie’s appeal has grown over time and attracted new generations of fans (even if sequel plans failed). And if the 10 Things I Hate About You cast was unknown then, now there is no mistaking the talent of stars like Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Charles Addams' very first Addams Family comic strip -- or at least a proto-version of the Family -- appeared in the pages of the New Yorker in 1938. In the strip, a vampire-like woman stands next to a large, bearded, brutish man at the foot of a staircase in a haunted mansion. Bats fly overhead and spider webs adorn the light fixtures. A creepy third member of the family peers down through a railing high above. Standing at the door is an eager, white-suited vacuum cleaner salesman attempting to hawk his wares. "Vibrationless, noiseless, and a great time and back saver. No well-appointed home should be without it," the salesman says. He is unperturbed to be in a haunted house, and presses on with his sales pitch, even though the manse has clearly never been swept.
Charles Addams would revisit these creepy characters regularly, eventually settling on a core cast of characters.

Barry Sonnenfeld's 1991 film "The Addams Family," based on the New Yorker comic strips by Chas Addams and extrapolated from the 1964 sitcom of the same name, was a pop culture clarion call for aspiring young goths the world over. The Addams Family were a gaggle of murderous weirds who lived in a haunted mansion, kept a severed human hand as a pet, and regularly engaged in cute family games wherein they exhumed long-dead relatives. They loved blood, sex, and magic. It's possible they were immortal; the young Wednesday (Christina Ricci) regularly murdered her brother Pugsley (Jimmy Workman). Morticia (Anjelica Huston) and Gomez (Raul Julia) were sexually active to an enviable degree, perhaps standing as one of the healthiest, most sex-positive couples in movies at the time. They were full of zest and joie de vivre. Only they were obsessed with death, so perhaps the term should be joie de mourir.

15 years ago Diablo Cody and Karyn Kusama joined forced to deliver "Jennifer's Body," a genuine cult classic that went from mismarketed box office failure maligned by critics who didn't understand its brilliance, to the reclaimed favorite that became one of the selling points in the marketing for "Lisa Frankenstein." Cody returns to the teen horror comedy space alongside Zelda Williams (in her feature directorial debut) with a zany, heartfelt, and unapologetically odd story about a particularly peculiar high school outcast named Lisa (Kathryn Newton) who goes on a murderous adventure with the reanimated corpse of a young man — whose grave she hangs out at — in search of new limbs, a sense of autonomy, and maybe even love.
Set against the backdrop of the candy-coated neon bubblegum of the 1980s, "Lisa Frankenstein" makes no qualms about being for weirdos, and by weirdos. It's the resulting lovechild of a raucous orgy between "Edward Scissorhands,...

Netflix is looking for ways to expand the universe of hit drama Wednesday, which reportedly involves developing a spin-off featuring Uncle Fester.
The Addams Family has been a perennial presence on the big and small screen since Charles Addams’ comics were adapted into the original television show in 1964.
Since then, there have been reunion television films and animated series, but the franchise arguably hit its peak in the 1990s with the release of feature films The Addams Family and it’s arguably even better sequel Addams Family Values.
Very few people talk about Addams Family Reunion which, although it features a scenery chewing turn from Tim Curry, failed to make an impact, much like The New Addams Family, the television series which followed soon after, which is only really worth watching for the episode where John Astin, the original Gomez, returns as Grandpapa Addams.

There's an endless debate between film fans on what it is exactly that makes a film "camp." For some, it's a shorthand to mean "so bad, it's good," while others (like myself) view it as a sacred form of presentation. Camp films are often exaggerated to the point of absurdity, tiptoeing the line of the uncanny, and with a sense of humor that is either unintentionally brilliant or delivered with tongue planted firmly in cheek. Of my 15 favorite movies of all time, more than half of the titles could be argued as camp classics. While there are plenty of universally understood camp films, the intentional lack of a formal metric means that a film's camp status will change from viewer to viewer, determined by vibes and a "you know it when you see it" attitude.

Halloween is the time for horror movies: for spine-tingling fright fests filled with blood, gore, and screams. At least, that’s the case for those of us who are child-free and have a pal or two for a late night horror binge or two over the course of October.
But for parents, Halloween is a time for the kiddos, for trick-or-treating and family costume parties and some family bonding movie nights. But what should you watch on the movie night when your kids are little? It can be difficult to find a movie appropriate for the season that doesn’t contain any scares that would make it unwatchable for a child; just because the movies are named “Halloween” doesn’t necessarily mean it’s what you should be watching on Halloween.

For an experiment that fell flat on its face at the box office, "Grindhouse" has left a remarkably large cultural footprint. Not only has Quentin Tarantino's half of his and Robert Rodriguez's 2007 double-feature, "Death Proof," gained greater appreciation, but also several of the fake trailers included in screenings of the duo's exploitation genre love letter have since taken on a life of their very own. Rodriguez's "Machete" trailer has birthed not one but two films, while the "Hobo with a Shotgun" trailer (a fan-made promo that mostly screened with "Grindhouse" in Canada) similarly gave rise to an actual film titled *checks notes* "Hobo with a Shotgun."
After more than 15 years of promising to turn his own "Grindhouse" faux promo, "Thanksgiving," into the real deal, writer/director Eli Roth has finally gone and done just that. The original trailer, for those unfamiliar, centers on a serial killer who...

If there's one thing that you can say about Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," it's that the three-hour historical epic about the father of the atomic bomb boasts an incredibly deep bench. Nolan packs the film with well-known and well-liked actors, with many big names seemingly happy to sign on for little more than a cameo if it let them be part of "Oppenheimer." But aside from the Matt Damons and Kenneth Branaghs, there's also a surprising number of cast members who began their careers as child stars.
Some came up during the mid-2000s golden age of the Disney Channel and Nickelodeon, while others date back decades earlier. Also, several have since gone on to lead well-developed and respected careers, while others are still in the process of proving themselves as adult actors in their own right. Arthur Schmidt, 2-time Academy Award-winning editor and longtime collaborator of Robert Zemeckis, died this past Saturday at the age of 86, his brother Ron announced.
Schmidt’s four-decade career includes some of the biggest films of the late 20th Century, including Zemeckis’ “Back to the Future” trilogy, “Contact” and “Cast Away.” He also received his two Oscars for “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” and “Forrest Gump,” the latter of which won Best Picture.

Jason Schwartzman and Carol Kane are starring in “Between the Temples,” a new film from writer and director Nathan Silver that’s being described as “an anxious comedy.” It’s the story of a cantor who is locked in a crisis of faith and finds his world turned upside down when his grade school music teacher re-enters his life as his new adult Bat Mitzvah student.
The supporting cast for this humorous exercise in neurosis boasts Dolly De Leon, who was just nominated for her scene-stealing work in “Triangle of Sadness.” Other ensemble members include Screen Actors Guild award-winner Caroline Aaron (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), longtime funnyman Robert Smigel (SNL’s “TV Funhouse”), stage and screen actress Madeline Weinstein (“Beach Rats”) and indie film regular Matthew Shear (“Mistress America”).
Principal photography wrapped in Kingston, N.Y., on the film. CAA Media Finance is handling domestic sales.

“The thing I love the most about playing Misty is that she’s really somebody who has accepted the fact that she’s never going to be accepted,” says Emmy-nominated “Yellowjackets” star Christina Ricci. “She still has those compulsions that she cannot ignore. The compulsive need to try to be accepted. The compulsive need to go after someone and see if they will be her friend. But I think deep down she understands who she is and the position that she’s been given. Because of that, I don’t think she really understands societal norms.” Watch our video interview above.
Season 2 of “Yellowjackets” is currently airing on Showtime. Ricci’s role as Misty Quigley earned her a Best Supporting Actress Emmy nomination last year. It was one of seven bids for the series including Best Drama Series.

Christina Ricci came to fame at just 10 years of age when she took on the role of Wednesday Addams in 1991’s “The Addams Family.” She gave the character a deadpan aura and the actress is still best-known for this sardonic wit. Ricci reprised the role in 1993’s “Addams Family Values,” where she solidified her take on the character, who was 12-13 years old in the movies, as the defining one. Three decades later, she returned to the world of “The Addams Family” in Netflix’s “Wednesday “— but not as Wednesday Addams.
Instead, that role went to Jenna Ortega, who is re-defining the character, now age 16, with her uber-popular performance. The comedy series sees Wednesday enrolling at Nevermore Academy. Ricci plays Marilyn Thornhill — Nevermore Academy’s science teacher and Wednesday’s dorm mother. At first, it seemed like Marilyn would be a neat little cameo-like role for Ricci that would satisfy fans of the original movies.

Catherine Zeta-Jones could edge ever closer to becoming a member of the exclusive Egot club with her guest role in Netflix’s hit comedy series “Wednesday.” So far, only 18 people have achieved the feat of winning an Egot, which means winning the top prize in the four major entertainment fields of TV (Emmy), music (Grammy), film (Oscar), and theater (Tony).
Zeta-Jones is currently halfway there. She won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for “Chicago” in 2003 and then won a Tony Award in 2010 for Best Actress in a Musical for “A Little Night Music.” She has never been up for a Grammy herself, although “Chicago” did win the Grammy for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media. At the age of nine, Christina Ricci made her breakout debut in the 1990 film “Mermaids” alongside Cher and Winona Rider. Now, at 43 years old, Ricci has over three decades of credits to her name and could be on the brink of a historic double Emmy nomination for her roles as Misty in the Showtime drama “Yellowjackets” and Marilyn Thornhill in the Netflix comedy “Wednesday.” Bids for both would make her the second woman in history to be nominated for Best Drama Supporting Actress and Best Comedy Supporting Actress in the same year. The first was Nancy Walker in 1975, nominated for “McMillan & Wife” and “Rhoda.”

Jenna Ortega has been a rising star over the past year, headlining the “Scream VI” blockbuster movie and hosting “Saturday Night Live” for the first time on March 11. Her most high profile gig was launched by Netflix last November, when she took on the iconic role of Wednesday Addams, the central character in the streamer’s third-most-watched series of all time, “Wednesday.” Only “Stranger Things” and “Squid Game” have logged more hours viewed.
The dark comedy series follows Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at NeverMore Academy, when she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a killing spree and solve the mystery that embroiled her parents. It’s the first time we’ve watched Wednesday live through those awkward teenage years.

You have to watch what you say if you’re famous these days. This week, Wednesday star Jenna Ortega has been both lauded and criticised for an interview she gave with Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast. Speaking about Netflix’s record-breaking Addams Family adaptation, she described aspects of the original script as not “making sense”, claiming that she “became almost unprofessional” and “started changing lines” while on set. “I can’t watch my work, but I can go home from set and say, ‘The scene that we shot today felt good,’” Ortega said. “[On] Wednesday there was not a scene in that show that I went home and was like, ‘Ok, that should be fine.’”
Her comments drew the ire of some: suffice to say, she is not the most popular figure on screenwriting Twitter at the moment. Pushing back against others’ work on set is one thing. Discussing it...

Move over, Tom Cruise! The “Top Gun: Maverick” legend wasn’t the only star Hollywood’s latest group of Oscar contenders were excited about seeing at Monday’s nominees luncheon.
“The Banshees of Inisherin” stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson gushed over meeting Paul Mescal (“Aftersun”). “I spent a long time chatting with him,” Gleeson told me after the annual luncheon at the Beverly Hilton.
In fact, Gleeson texted Mescal after the nominations were announced in January. “I had to ask my son Domhnall for his number. I was very proud of [Mescal],” Gleeson said.
Earlier in the day, Mescal told me what it was like to receive the text. “He’s an idol of mine,” he said. “He was just incredibly generous and was like, ‘We’re gonna make this a fun month.’ That was one of those crazy things.”
Farrell said he unsuccessfully tried to get an email address...

In February 2023, Netflix will remove a bunch of movie and TV series from its library,
Netflix UK and Netflix US takes down numerous titles each month without fanfare, meaning that many things on your watchlist could suddenly disappear.
These removals are due to licencing deals coming to an end. Often, the titles make their way back to Netflix in the following year, but sometimes they leave to go to other platforms.
This month sees a selection of Netflix Originals being taken down, also.
To minimise surprise, we have put together a comprehensive list of everything being removed in both Netflix UK and US.

Lisa Loring, best known for her portrayal of Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family sitcom, has died at age 64. The talented actor suffered a massive stroke caused by high blood pressure and, after three days on life support, ultimately lost her life. Chris Carbaugh, Loring’s agent, confirmed the news in a statement to CNN. “She brought to life one of the most iconic characters in Hollywood history that is still celebrated today,” Carbaugh shared. “Lisa loved sharing her memories and meeting all her fans across the world.” Among her fans is undoubtedly Jenna Ortega, who recently reimagined Wednesday for a new generation.

There are thousands of shows and movies to watch on Netflix, but they don't all stick around forever. This is just one of those sad facts of life, made even sadder when the disappearance of a particular title takes you by surprise. If you're making your way through a TV show by watching one or two episodes a week, it's good to know ahead of time if the show will disappear from the streaming service's catalog, so at least you'll have the option of picking up the pace.
Even if you prefer films to TV shows, it's nice to be reminded of your options before said options are taken away. From superhero blockbusters to intimate period dramas and everything in between, there are some real gems leaving Netflix this month. If you've been meaning to get around to any of these titles below, take advantage of the time they've got left.

Addams Family Values, The Borgias and the last two Rambo movies are among the high-profile titles set to leave Netflix later this month.
The 1993 Paramount movie sequel Addams Family Values departs the streamer on Jan. 31 as Netflix’s latest take on the Addams Family, the Jenna Ortega-starring hit series Wednesday, was recently renewed for a second season.
Showtime’s historical drama, The Borgias, which ran for three seasons, from 2011-2013, and starred Jeremy Irons as Pope Alexander VI, will also exit Netflix at the end of the month.
Even before these titles vanish, Netflix is losing Peter Bogdanovich’s star-studded screwball romance She’s Funny That Way. The film starring Jennifer Aniston, Owen Wilson, Imogen Poots, Rhys Ifans, Will Forte and Kathryn Hahn, among others, will leave Netflix on Jan. 29.

Under the agreement, Hernandez and Samit will develop, write and produce both animated and live-action series for all platforms through their production company, Hermit House. They serve as showrunners on 20th TV Animation’s Koala Man, starring Sarah Snook, Demi Lardner and Hugh Jackman, which they developed and executive produce alongside Michael Cusack and Justin Roiland. The duo also is already in business with ABC Studios; they have workplace comedy Talk Nerdy to Me in early development at CBS through the studio.

With her Golden Globe nomination this year for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (2022), Angela Bassett now has a chance to win a bookend trophy to the one she first claimed 29 years ago for “What’s Love Got to Do with It” (1993). That popular musical biopic was based on the life of Tina Turner, with Bassett portraying the superstar and Laurence Fishburne taking on the role of her husband, Ike Turner. During her [relatively short] acceptance speech, the actress made sure to give Turner, whom she dubbed a “national treasure,” a shout-out at the podium. Watch the Golden Globes flashback video above.
“Thank you, Hollywood Foreign Press for honoring me so wonderfully this evening and for finding favor in my portrayal of Tina Turner,” Bassett proclaimed after the applause died down. “Thank you, my director Brian Gibson. The greatest co-star I could ever imagine, Mr. Laurence Fishburne. I love you, Laurence, thank you. And lastly,...

To revive the Addams Family for Tim Burton, production designer Mark Scruton’s brief was very clear. “We were not trying to copy anything else — it’s not a sequel, it’s not a reinvention, it’s a new thing,” he says. Scruton went back to cartoonist Charles Addams’ source material to evoke Wednesday’s world and, together with Burton and an illustrator, started by sketching out mirthless Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) and bubbly Enid’s (Emma Myers) dorm room, which would set the tone for everything else.
“It is a micro of everything. The difference between [boarding school] Nevermore and [the small town] Jericho is the same as between Enid and Wednesday,” Scruton explains. “The window grew from wanting to give a strong graphic bond to the fact that the two were complete opposites. I wanted one half stained glass and one half completely monochrome. But we had...

The premise of John Pasquin's 1994 comedy film, "The Santa Clause," is darker than the movie's PG rating might lead one to believe. Tim Allen plays a shiftless, no-good dad named Scott Calvin, perhaps named after the 16th-century philosopher John Calvin who espoused a belief in Christian predetermination. Scott Calvin, on Christmas Eve, hears someone shuffling around on his roof. He goes outside to investigate and startles the interloper, causing them to fall to their death. Calvin finds that the interloper was Santa Claus ... the actual Santa Claus. Scott Calvin may be the only Disney hero who has killed Santa, unless there are dark things I cannot recall about Eeyore.
Calvin, instructed by Santa's business card, dons Santa's red suit and takes control of his sleigh, having to complete the big man's Christmas delivery in his stead. At the end of the night, he returns Santa's gear to the North Pole,...

After bouncing all over the place in November with episodes on Knives and Skin, Starship Troopers, Perfect Blue and Addams Family Values, we’re settling into a few weeks of themed ‘Winter Horror’ discussions. Last week was Joel Schumacher’s deliciously queer camp Batman & Robin and this week, we’re back in Rural Horror territory with the cannibal prequel origin story we didn’t know we wanted in Declan O’Brien‘s Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings (2011).
In the film, a group of college kids embark on a ski/snowmobile weekend when they get lost in a white-out storm. Seeking shelter in a nearby sanitarium that was the site of a horrific massacre, the group finds themselves hunted by a trio of inbred cannibals: the Hillicker brothers.
As the group is picked off one by one, they struggle to survive both the elements, as well as the...

Since making her on-screen debut in "Mermaids" at only nine years old, Christina Ricci has grown into one of the most prolific child stars who successfully made the transition into acting throughout adulthood. The seasoned starlet has always been a professional both on screen and off, captivating audiences with her unique look and diverse talent. For many of us, Ricci's most memorable role was her portrayal of Wednesday Addams in director Barry Sonnenfeld's 1991 film "The Addams Family" and his 1993 sequel "Addams Family Values." Donning raven-colored pigtails, a signature black dress, and flat-affect, Ricci became a generation's beloved personification of cartoonist Charles Addams' character. She not only embodied the role but also confidently asserted herself as an asset to the storytelling process by suggesting an alternate ending to the original "The Addams Family" script, a change that would resonate with audiences even decades later.
