Two Old Goats in Minnesota

"Grumpy Old Men" is a movie of two long time friends, John Gustafson (Jack Lemon) and Max Goldman (Walter Matthau). They live next door to each other and both take notice when Ariel Truax (Ann Margret) moves in across the street. John and Max enjoy pulling pranks and insulting the other. Ariel does her own research on the two men and enjoys playing one against the other. John receives a visit from IRS agent Snyder (Buck Henry) early on that figures in throughout the movie. The events are centered around the winter holidays in a small, cold, and snowy Minnesota town where everyone has a strong love for ice fishing.

The pranks and insults are only a cover up for the deep respect and friendship which the two men have for each other. It is quite evident that John and Max would do anything and everything for each other, or for any other person in the community. Ariel's companionship and friendship with each of them only increases the two men's devotion and competition with each other. Max's friendship is accentuated when he stands up to Agent Snyder, and pulls a few pranks on him in order to save John's house while John is in the hospital. Likewise John shows his friendship for Max when he returns Max's favorite ice fishing pole. Ariel sees the commitment these two men have for each other and their families. She has a hard time not to hurt one man's feelings while showing affection for the other, but handles it with great finesse.

Director Donald Petrie does a superb job of showing the friendship of these two men, and of the tight bonds that are in a small community. The director's tongue in cheek approach to this movie is very well displayed and noteworthy. "Grumpy Old Men" is a movie which needs to be seen several times in order to pick up the little one liners and insults. One should also pay attention to the devotion of friendship, even if it is done by way of insults. Friendship is something that should be continually built on any way it can, and this movie definitely accomplishes this in many ways.
