Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

The horror film genre is one that many people sidestep when picking out an option for film night, not simply out of fear; but often because of uninspired, predictable story-lines and limp performances. However, that isn’t to say that there aren’t still some great horror films out there. This piece, in particular, focuses on horror films which feature scenes of gambling: you may not love all of them, but they are the best on offer.
Arbat
‘Arbat’ is local Thai for ‘violation’ or ‘offense’. The movie is the story of a young man forced into becoming a monk by his father. The novice monk goes on to develop a romantic relationship with a local village girl, leading to ghostly occurrences and strange happenings. The film features several scenes of gambling, drinking, violence – all the bells and whistles. However, its reference to Buddhism was deemed insulting...

The upcoming Smosh movie isn’t the only project on which Defy Media and Lionsgate are collaborating. In addition to the film starring the duo behind one of YouTube’s most successful channels (and one of the internet’s most successful young adult brands), the companies just announced the launch of Movies on Break. It's "a curated selection of 200 films from the Lionsgate library” that are ad-supported with pre-roll and mid-roll commercial spots, but otherwise free-to-view onto a section of the Defy Media owned-and-operated Break.com website that draws over 18 million unique monthly viewers.
Movies on Break launches with 80 films categorized into a handful of separate verticals with enticing names, such as They Were In That?, Never Ending Sequels (which currently features Leprechaun 2, 3, 4, Leprechaun In The Hood, and Leprechaun Back 2 Tha Hood), 420 Flicks (which currently features The Stonged Age and Cheerleader Ninjas), Before They Were Famous (which currently features...

How did a low budget horror movie about a diminutive Irish monster spawn five sequels, a new reboot, and the career of Jennifer Aniston? EW tracks the deranged history of the Leprechaun franchise.
British actor Warwick Davis says he has “specific” fans—well-wishers who want to discuss just one of the several fantasy franchises in which he has appeared. “People talk about Star Wars, people talk about Harry Potter,” he explains, “and people talk about Leprechaun.”

Back in 2012, Lionsgate made the surprise announcement that, as part of its beautiful new friendship with WWE Studios, it was developing a reboot of the mind-boggling Leprechaun franchise. VFX veteran Zach Lipovsky was placed in the director's chair a year later, and this being a WWE project it transpired that it was all being set up as a vehicle for diminutive wrestler Dylan "Hornswoggle" Postl. And now, from the halls of Comic-Con, comes the first promo image for Leprechaun: Origins, showcasing a shadowed Lep in profile in a leafy graveyard. He doesn't look very much like Warwick Davis anymore...If you're new here, the original Leprechaun came out in 1993, starring Davis as the titular murderous imp (mad as hell about being swizzed out of his Lucky Charms gold), and providing a pre-Friends starring role for Jennifer Aniston. It was released by Trimark, which Lionsgate swallowed in 2000.It spawned an amazing...

The sad truth about life is that none of us, save for Hulk Hogan, is immortal. We're all gonna die. Hopefully in less horrific ways than the fashion in which characters die in the movies we all spend so much time watching... but nevertheless, there's going to come a day where and each and every one of us meets up with the Grim Reaper. And I don't know about you, but I don't want to take unlived experiences to the grave with me. Which is why, like Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson before me, I keep my very own Bucket List in my desk drawer, a collection of different experiences I want to have, both big and small, before my time on this Earth is finished. It's unlikely that I'll ever cross all of them off, but I'm damn sure going to try. In the event that you don't have...

I’ve never actually seen any of the “Leprechaun” movies. No, that’s not true. I’ve never actually seen any of the “Leprechaun” movies all the way through. I think I saw one where he went into the ‘hood, which was called, appropriately enough, “Leprechaun in The Hood”. I don’t really recall what I saw, though I do remember that Ice-t was in it, and apparently the installment did enough business that the producers did a sequel to the sequel called “Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood”. I’m not sure why they decided to “slang out” the title, though, when they didn’t do it with the first “Hood” sequel. Creative decisions, I suppose. Check out the box art to your left if you think I’m making this up. I can assure you, I am not. See? Anyways, according to trade reports, the WWE and their partners...

The question you might be asking yourself right now is ‘Leprechaun reboot? That’s a thing?’ Yes, gentle reader, that is indeed a thing and it now has a director in Spielberg discovery Zach Lipovsky.
You’ve probably not heard of Lipovsky either, but he appeared on the reality series On The Lot, in which aspiring filmmakers competed for a deal with DreamWorks. Does this mean that Spielberg has anything to do with the reboot? Nope. But it gives the guy a little bit of credibility.
Right. Lipovsky will direct the reboot of the 1993 classic (?) Leprechaun. The original starred Warwick Davis (who else?) as an evil little Irish caricature searching for his pot o’gold and … well, pretty much killing everyone in the process. The reboot will star WWE star Hornswoggle as the title character. It’s being produced, unsurprisingly, by WWE Studios and Lionsgate, so … yeah.

Here's the news that you have been waiting patiently for! That's right, kids! Hide your pots of gold (and - in reference to Leprechaun in the Hood - hide your pot too); a director has been found for WWE Films' Leprechaun reboot!
According to The Wrap, Lionsgate and WWE Studios have set visual-effects veteran Zach Lipovsky to direct Leprechaun, the long-awaited reboot of the successful horror franchise that launched the career of Jennifer Aniston.
Lipovsky was discovered as a contestant on Steven Spielberg and Mark Burnett's short-lived reality series "On the Lot," which saw 16 aspiring filmmakers compete for a development deal with DreamWorks.
The original Leprechaun, which featured comedic elements, followed an evil leprechaun searching for his pot of gold while avoiding four-leaf clovers. “The tone is going to be a little darker, a little more traditional horror than the Warwick Davis ones that people remember, trying to find...

Warwick Davis has been a part of our lives as movie fans for three decades, starring as Wicket the Ewok in "Return of the Jedi" and later as the title character in "Willow" before starring in the "Leprechaun" movies and in every "Harry Potter" film in the franchise. Quite the career!
The following mini-biography marks a few significant dates in Davis' life, complete with fun facts that you may not have known about the esteemed English thespian.
February 3, 1970: Born to narcissist parents Warren and Harwick Davis in Epsom, Surrey, UK.
April 25, 1977: Sees "Star Wars" for the first time with his older brother, Meriweather. During the show, he allegedly points to the screen and whispers something to Meriweather that would seem to have amazingly prophesied his future: "One day, Meriweather, I'm going to play a murderous leprechaun in a film franchise that will launch the career of a promising young actress named Jennifer Aniston.

NextMovie kicks off Leprechaun Week today! Look for new "Leprechaun"-related content every day this week in the lead-up to St. Paddy's Day. Because it's what Leprechaun would have wanted ...
"I have not come to play with fruit. I just want me magic flute!"
So sayeth the ever-rhyming Irish demon played by Warwick Davis in "Leprechaun in the Hood" (2000) to the lusty cross-dressing Miss Fontaine (Lobo Sebastian). A little later, these two engage in a passionate romp under the sheets during which Miss Fontaine's cries of pain will be mistaken for gasps of orgasmic delight by at least one bewildered passer-by as the Leprechaun claims another victim.
It's astonishingly tasteless, crass and almost (almost) admirably brazen ... which kind of sums up the "Leprechaun" series in its entirety. And that's a pretty impressive entirety — there are six of the damn things in that pot of cinematic gold, after all.

From the lobby scene in The Matrix to Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader squaring off in The Empire Strikes Back, the most effective movie fight scenes generally rely on objects designed for inflicting harm.
Every once in a while though, a gun runs out of bullets, a knife gets kicked out of reach, or a screenwriter becomes bored. The result is an impractical, yet effective use of a common object as a weapon.
"Did he really just beat that man to death with a dildo?" He sure did -- and that's not even the weirdest improvised weapon in our supercut above. Enjoy!
In order of appearance:
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) - Dildo
Samson and Delilah (1949) - A donkey's jawbone
The Boondock Saints (1999) - Toilet
Deadly Friend (1986) - Basketball
Nacho Libre (2006) - Corn
Single White Female (1992) - Stiletto
Grosse Pointe Blank (1997) - Television
Sleeper (1973) - Bleu cheese

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Lionsgate and WWE Studios were teaming up for a reboot of Leprechaun. We now know who will be playing the title character. Replacing Warwick Davis is WWE star Dylan Postl, who is better known as Hornswoggle.
He recently took to his Twitter page to announce the casting, title, and release month: “The #swogglesecret that I’ve been hinting at all week is that in March 2013 I will be starring in Leprechaun:Origins by WWE Studios!!!”
The target release month is still quite a bit away, but we’ll keep an eye out for additional casting announcements over the coming months. At this time, a director and additional actors have not been announced. While this was referred to as Leprechaun: Origins in the Tweet, we wouldn’t be surprised to see “origins” dropped from the title if they are planning this film as...

You know what that means? Of course you know what that means. Yo, Warwick Davis, put on your Leprechaun gear and lay down some mad lyrics.

Just in time for St. Patrick's Day, we've got some strange news about one of the more unexpected reboots to be announced in quite a while. Lionsgate and WWE Studios are apparently teaming up for a new take on the cult horror favourite Leprechaun. The original 1993 film starred Warwick Davis as a deranged leprechaun who goes on a killing spree in search of his lucky pot of gold. It also featured Jennifer Aniston in her very first big screen role. The movie built up a following over the years and spawned some of the most ridiculous sequels ever including Leprechaun 4: In Space and Leprechaun in the Hood starring Ice-t. How can they possibly top that? According to Variety, Leprechaun will be the first in a two-film deal between Lionsgate and WWE where they will split the cost of both production and marketing, with Lionsgate handling distribution. They've previously worked...

Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, we have news of a Leprechaun reboot happening over at Lionsgate. According to Variety, Lionsgate is teaming up with WWE Studios to produce the film, with plans to release it sometime in 2013.
This is a very early announcement, so at this time there is no writer or director attached. The original film was released in 1993 and spawned multiple direct to video sequels including Leprechaun in the Hood and Leprechaun 4: In Space. WWE Studios is looking to relaunch their film division and this will be the first of multiple projects for the studio. We’ll report back as soon as development of the project moves forward.

Dear Warwick Davis: I think I just found the perfect story arc for the next season of Life's Too Short. Variety reports that Lionsgate has forged a two-film deal with WWE Studios (yes, that's World Wrestling Entertainment) and the first project that they will be working on together is a reboot of the horror series Leprechaun. Launched in 1993 by writer/director Mark Jones, the first film followed a killer Leprechaun as he hunted for his pot of gold (fun fact: the movie is Jennifer Aniston's first credited film role). That movie was followed by five sequels, four of which went straight to video - including Leprechaun in the Hood and Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood. The last one in the franchise came out in 2003. While the trade says that the film will be coming out some time in 2013, no writer, director or actors are currently attached. Lionsgate and...

Ice-t; most people know him best now as Detective Fin Tutuola on Law & Order: Svu or if you're a hip-hop fan, like myself, you'll always remember him as one of the pioneers of "gangsta" rap before there was even a term for it. A lot of us even dig his surprisingly eclectic film career. He's been in movies as diverse as New Jack City, Surviving the Game, Tank Girl, Johnny Mnemonic and Leprechaun in the Hood.
However, it's his very early foray into the world of films that I want to focus on in this installment of Trailer Trash.
Before Ice-t had even released a record, he began to gain notoriety as a rapper and songwriter, in large part due to his work in motion pictures. While a lot of his early 80's film work can be considered corny and laughable by today's standards and a far cry from the...

Sometimes hitting the multiplex just isn’t in the cards. That’s when cable, the web and streaming step in to provide an instant movie fix. But how to separate the wheat from the chaff? I’m happy to help; every week I’ll pick a flick and see if it’s worth your time. This week? “Leprechaun 5: In the Hood”
Everybody wants to be a star. But it’s easier for a nobody to steal a leprechaun’s gold than it is to make it big (unless you’re on Jersey Shore.) At least that’s the story in Leprechaun in the Hood, the funniest entry in the Leprechaun series. It may not be great cinema, but it’s a hilarious look at low budget horror slapstick. And hey, it’s got Ice T as a pimp!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, lads and lassies! Time to dust off your green garb and prep your palette for jade-tinted guzzling so you can properly rep the 0.064% of your genetics that lay claim to Irish heritage.
Since we’re of the mind that any proper pre-game should include the screening of a flick or two, we’ve compiled some of our favorite Emerald Isle-themed movies. And – as with today’s holiday – you don’t have to be Irish to enjoy ‘em.
Check out our list past the jump!
“The Commitments” (1991)
This tale of a group of misfit musicians in Dublin who form a soul band manages loads of heartwarming laughs sans any cheesiness. The then-unknown actors were chosen for their musical talents, but many have gone on to achieve substantial fame – most notably, Colm Meaney (“Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Con Air,” “Layer Cake”) and Glen Hansard (vocalist/guitarist...

Do sequels ever make your head feel like the above? They hold a dubious place in the realm of Hollywood; they are often profitable, easy to make because they are based on an established story/cast/concept and they are usually done on the cheap. However, audiences have learned over the years to be wary of sequels because they, more often than not, fail to live up to the enjoyable qualities of the initial film they are based on. A film can usually achieve a trilogy and still retain a large portion of its audience but by the 4th film the studios begin to use deceptive titles to hide the sequential nature of the film. Here are a list of 10 films that tried Very hard to get us to not realize they weren’t just another needless sequel.

Don't worry Thems! is not a sequel to the 1954 film Them or a dreaded remake. It's a new feature length film directed by Eliab Alvarez de la Campa. Thems! is being described as a 50's drive-in type movie with a mix of 70's grindhouse cinema. In the same vein as Leprechaun In the Hood, Thems! brings the low budget creature feature into the ghetto! An experimental bug spray causes nature to run amok, releasing giant cockroaches on shit holes, projects, and ghettos -- all of which seem very white! Watch the trailer below and you will see what I mean... And I Repeat, Stay In Your Cribs!

If you’re in the market for yet another big-budget remake of a marginally popular horror franchise, prepare to enter a glorious world of unimaginable bliss. According to an anonymous email we received early this morning, Verne Troyer and Elizabeth Banks are set to star in Ben Stiller’s upcoming “interpretation” of writer/director Mark Jones’ much-maligned 1993 horror/comedy “Leprechaun”. Working from a script co-written by collaborator Justin Theroux, the picture is rumored to be a “shot for shot” recreation of the original film, much like Gus Van Sant’s grossly misguided 1998 atrocity “Psycho”. With both Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow handling producing duties, it’s a pretty safe bet that they’re approaching this ambitious project with tongues firmly inserted into respective cheeks. As long as they figure out a way to cleverly incorporate the little guy’s rap song from “Leprechaun in the Hood”, I’ll be an extremely happy camper.

This Wednesday is St. Patrick’s Day, meaning that sometime between hump day and the end of the week, our nation and large portions of the world’s Irish populous will explode in a drunken green frenzy the likes of which we’ve never seen before. Whether you’re Irish or not, it’s time to put on a plastic green hat, bust out that Guinness and make friends with that toilet seat like it’s the Blarney stone.
And in case you need a little bit of help, here’s 7 badass Irish-themed movies to get you in the mood for the festivities.
7. In the Name of the Father
Daniel Day-Lewis stars in 1993’s In the Name of the Father as Gerry Conlon, a member of the real-life Guilford Four, a group of people falsely convicted of an Ira pub bombing in the 1970s. Ddl’s performance here is a...

On just about every Friday night, when I was a kid, back in the days before Netflix (or illegal BitTorrents for all you criminals out there, you know who you are), my parents used to take me to the video store (this being their idea of active recreation, far be it from me to complain). No sooner would we get through the entrance way before I found myself in the horror and sci-fi/fantasy sections, face-to-face with a slew of low budget titles, never advertised on television, performed by actors who seldom (if ever) broke into major motion pictures, and helmed by directors who proved, time and time again, that creativity cannot be bought, but rather cultivated, with ambition and a fervent imagination.

Warmoth is out of town, covering something for @multiplayers. So you Twitter-Wood-ers are stuck with me, your friendly neighborhood MTV Movies Blog editor. My picks aren't usually as structured as Brian's are, and today is no different. Still, there's plenty of fun, funny and fascinating pulled together for you after the jump.
First up is "Harry Potter" star Tom Felton, who's spending some vacation time with Universal Studios and Scrabble. Then we've got "Jennifer's Body" writer Diablo Cody coining a new phrase and Rob Corddry asking a ridiculous question. Also, Kevin Pollak offers a hilariously descriptive rundown of his preparations for a coming colonoscopy. Plus, sound advice from Denzel Washington (take note, Kanye-haters), observations on the female anatomy from Michael Ian Black and "The Office" star Rainn Wilson's steamy night... alone. I'm @geminibros and this is your Twitter-Wood report for September 16, 2009.

Trying to get into the Halloween spirit, but you just don't have a ton of spare time? How about a handful of horror flicks from the past few decades, each condensed down to a devilish 66.6 seconds? FEARnet has a bunch of classics from the genre, chopped down to just over a minute for your impatient viewing pleasure. The narration might be a bit unnecessary, but they have an interesting and diverse selection that includes Evil Dead 2, Candyman, Hostel, The Howling, and of course the masterpiece Leprechaun In The Hood. Get yourself a quickie Right Here!
