Some classic rock songs were controversial before they were completed. For example, a famous backup singer for The Rolling Stones initially refused to work on Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama.” She said a horrific historical event made her turn down the song at first.
The Rolling Stones’ ‘Gimme Shelter’ is connected to Lynyrd Skynyrd
Merry Clayton is a backup singer perhaps best known for duetting with Mick Jagger on The Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter.” During a 2013 interview with The A.V. Club, she said fellow backup singer Clydie King told her she could sing on “Sweet Home Alabama.” Clayton didn’t like the idea but her husband, Curtis, said she’d do it.
“I get off the phone and said, ‘Curtis, why are you telling Clydie that I’m going to be at a session that I do not want to do? You know I’m not going to sing...

This week, a very old recording industry tradition took center stage. We’re talking, of course, about the answer song.
Answer records are songs that “answer” a previous recording by a different artist, sometimes directly addressing a specific incident, other times playing off its themes. The novelty has been around for decades, crossing over from blues to R&b to country to hip-hop, and often is an answer by one gender to another.
The trick originally was designed to capture the sales momentum of the original song. Rarely has it achieved equal success, but certainly gave fans and the industry something to latch onto in the wake of a hit.
For example, the 1963 song by Andrea Carroll, It Hurts To Be Sixteen, was the answer record to Neil Sedaka’s Happy Birthday, Sweet Sixteen. In this case, sales-savvy Sedaka wrote the melody to both, using different lyricists to convey the differing perspectives.

Continuing our series of writers defending unpopular films is a reappraisal of the absurd yet compelling Jennifer Lopez/Ralph Fiennes romantic comedy
2002 was a bumper year for romcoms. Banking on the commercial safety of a saccharine love story, studios splashed out on everything from the Nick Hornby adaptation About A Boy to Gurinder Chadha’s Hounslow tale Bend It Like Beckham, Sandra Bullock facing off against corporate shill Hugh Grant in Two Weeks Notice, matrimonial romp My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and Reese Witherspoon’s nostalgic Sweet Home Alabama, to name just a few titles.
This was a golden age for will-they-won’t-they tales set to the backdrop of the new millennium, burgeoning digital literacy and predictable scripts that ensured that they, in fact, always did. Nestled amongst these releases was a critically derided, commercially dominating cultural relic: Maid In Manhattan.

Actress, model and avid photographer Candice Bergen is the daughter of famed ventriloquist Edgar Bergen, whose most famous dummy was Charlie McCarthy. The majority of Steven Soderbergh’s delicious new comedy “Let Them All Talk” occurs on a cruise ship crossing from New York to London. Amidst the mass of passengers onboard, we’re focused on four women: Alice Hughes (Meryl Streep), a fictional Pulitzer-Prize winning novelist, her two oldest friends, Roberta (Candice Bergen) and Susan (Dianne Wiest), and Alice’s zealous new literary agent (Gemma Chan). Simmering among these four women are countless secrets, resentments, and regrets — and somewhere across the Atlantic, all of them are bound to come to a boil.
In directing the film, Soderbergh took a guerrilla approach. He eschewed the usual trove of lights and equipment, favoring natural lighting and a wheelchair for dolly shots. Much of the dialogue was unscripted, too — Streep has said that Soderbergh provided the actors with outlines of each scene and directed them to improvise their lines. The result is an organic,...

Jean Smart is Emmy-nominated for HBO’s “Watchmen,” playing an anti-vigilante FBI agent. It’s yet another of Smart’s surprising performances, tackling offbeat roles and making them distinct and memorable.
Smart became a household name with her five-year run as Charlene on CBS’ “Designing Women,” starting in 1986. But when the sitcom debuted, she had already racked up multiple credits, including guest parts in various series and many theater roles, earning a Tony nomination for playing Marlene Dietrich in Broadway’s “Piaf.”
Since then, she’s played the smart but mentally unstable first lady in “24,” a woman forced into organized crime in FX’s “Fargo,” and films including “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Garden State,” “I Heart Huckabees” and “A Simple Favor.” She has also played onstage in Kaufman & Hart’s “The Man Who Came to Dinner” and Christopher Durang’s “Laughing Wild,” among many others.

The deal is a two-year extension that will continue the studio’s relationship through the end of 2023. Moritz first formed the film deal with Paramount in 2019 after leaving a long-time deal with Sony.

Paramount Pictures has announced a two-year extension of its first-look deal with producer Neal Moritz, who delivered “Sonic the Hedgehog” to the studio and is producing the sequel.
The new deal, announced Wednesday, extends the studio’s relationship with Moritz through the end of 2023.
After a strong opening weekend, “Sonic the Hedgehog” went on to become the highest-grossing movie based on a video game domestically, with $146 million in the U.S. and $306 million worldwide. After its home entertainment release, the film also set Paramount’s record for first-day digital sales and became the studio’s all-time record-holder in less than three weeks.
In addition to the sequel to “Sonic the Hedgehog,” Moritz will also be producing “To Catch a Thief” and the upcoming mobster thriller “American Son.” Based on Jacques Audiard’s French film “A Prophet,” “American Son” will star Russell Crowe, with Andrew “Rapman” Onwubolu directing and Dennis Lehane writing the screenplay.

Are Nicholas Sparks adaptations a bit too hard-hitting for you? Did you quite fancy Josh Lucas in Sweet Home Alabama but find him too charismatic? Do you enjoy mansplaining, rictus grins and infomercials?
Boy oh boy, fans of the bland, do we have a movie for you!
Miranda Wells (Katie Holmes) is having a hard time. She has a leaky roof, a dead husband, a boring boyfriend and mild to moderate debt. Sometimes she cannot afford to order pizza and she definitely cannot buy her daughter a pony. Woe is her. Lynyrd Skynyrd is arguably one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll bands ever, responsible for several indispensable tracks when you talk about genuine classics: just think “Free Bird”, “Sweet Home Alabama” or “Simple Man” for starters. In retrospect, it’s unbelievable that the main run of a band with such enduring impact only lasted little more than four years, considering that they released their first album in 1973 after being originally formed in 1964. The story of Lynyrd Skynyrd is a tragic one: after starting at the bottom as a working-class band from the American South, and working hard towards success, they suffered a plane accident...

The April 22 episode of the “The Masked Singer” is the second of the two quarter-finals of season 3. Facing off against each other this week are the Banana, Frog, Kitty and Rhino. The first quarter-final that aired on April 8 saw three of the other remaining contenders — Astronaut, Night Angel and Turtle — move ahead in the competition after the Rhino was revealed to be model Jordyn Woods.
In between these two episodes, a special sing-along version of the show screened on April 15. In that episode, we got a new clue about the Banana who says he he can hardly see in his costume. It was a sing-along special on Season 3, Episode 12 of “The Masked Singer” … more of a showcase than an elimination round. Dang, I was hoping for a big reveal. Well, that will have to wait until next week. Anyways, as the competition continues, seven performers are left this season: Turtle, Frog, Kitty, Rhino, Astronaut, Night Angel and Banana. The Banana peeled off the Lynyrd Skynyrd song “Sweet Home Alabama.” With clues of blowfish, a blue dog collar, and a super sexy mullet, the hints were confusing. So who is it?
SEEAre ‘The Masked Singer’ celebrity contestants lip-syncing or singing live?
I launched backwards a bit remembering previous clues of dice and a slot machine indicating ties to Vegas. This performer is obviously trained. He owned the stage and I loved his Banana-ettes (his dancers). He seems to have a southern twang; he knows how to engage the audience and he can sing.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 3, episode 12 of “The Masked Singer,” which aired April 15 on Fox.
“The Masked Singer” took a breather this week, airing a special sing-a-long edition featuring performances by the show’s “Mighty Seven” finalists. That means, at least for this week, that none of the disguised celebrities were unmasked.
The competition returns next week, but for now, viewers were treated to some of the most memorable performances from the first 11 episodes of Season 3 — a long with lyrics and a bouncing mask, for fans to sing along.
The special also contained new clue packages featuring the stars, highlighting a few of the hints that might solve who is under each mask.
What does the Lynyrd Skynyrd song Sweet Home Alabama and Hurricane Dorian have in common? Both “miss ‘ole’ ‘bamy once again.”
Before this week, those were the most famous Alabama misses. Then along came President Trump, who made a now-famous call on Hurricane Dorian’s potential storm path, wherein he warned the major storm could hit Alabama, and then used what suspiciously looked like a Sharpie-enhanced series of maps to buttress his point.
Today, the debate on storm paths, Sharpies and reality continued as a Category 5, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa) defending President Trump by taking on the Birmingham National Weather Service’s prior claims on the storm.
A Noaa spokesperson issued a statement Friday that Trump’s storm path claims were an accurate reflection of its analysis on Hurricane Dorian’s potential path. The National Weather Service in Birmingham, Alabama previously said that the state would...

A New Orleans native who was raised in Tennessee, Reese Witherspoon is the very definition of good things coming in petite 5-foot-1 packages. She made her film debut at age 14 in 1991’s “The Man in the Moon,” a bittersweet Southern coming-of-age tale of first love and loss. From then on, she was pegged as a young actress to watch. She would soon gravitate towards edgier fare such as the underwhelming 1994 comedy “S.F.W.” and 1996’s “Freeway,” a rancid take on a Little Red Riding Hood on the run. She then scored a signature role as the rabidly ruthless high-school over-achiever Tracy Flick in 1999’s political satire “Election.” That was followed by her first major box-office hit, 2001’s “Legally Blonde,” as a perky Harvard student with a penchant for pink, feathered pens and cute Chihuahuas.
