Sffilm has announced the winners of the juried Golden Gate Awards competition and the Audience Awards at the 67th San Francisco International Film Festival (Sffilm Festival). The awards serve as a launching pad for internationally renowned filmmakers who are early in their careers, and they qualify films under 40 minutes for the Oscars. Past Golden Gate Award winners include Panah Panahi, Reid Davenport, Nadav Lapid, Marlon Riggs, Céline Sciamma, Jia Zhang-ke, Stanley Nelson, and Tasha Van Zandt.
This year, the 2024 Sffilm Festival ran five days from April 24 – 28 rather than its usual sprawling two weeks. The Sffilm board opted to pull back conservatively where others would have gone bigger to keep a more expansive footprint. Altogether they brought in 130 filmmakers this year, an excellent global selection of films despite the calendar disadvantage of being caught between Sundance and Cannes.

The worst has been confirmed by THR: Julian Sands, the unforgettable star of the horror classic Warlock, is dead. The actor vanished in January when hiking in the Mount Baldy wilderness outside of L.A. Recently, hikers found a body, and, as expected, its identity was confirmed as Sands. It’s a sad but not unexpected end for one of the most high-profile missing persons cases in recent years, and hopefully, his remains being identified will give his family peace. It sounds like a tragic accident, with Sands being a renowned outdoorsman and avid hiker. It took this long to find and identify him because, until recently, the area suffered the effects of unusually severe weather.
Of course, Sands is an icon to the horror community thanks to his star role in Warlock and its sequel, Warlock: The Armageddon. He also had roles in many other movies, with him initially...

After six months of searching, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s office confirmed today that the human remains found earlier this week by hikers were, indeed, those of actor Julian Sands. He had been missing since mid-January.
The statement (read it below) says his cause of death is still pending, but Sands was an experienced hiker who loved the outdoors.
The positive identification comes less than a week after Sands’ family issued their first statement on the matter, saying they are “deeply grateful to the search teams and coordinators who have worked tirelessly to find Julian.”
Of the actor himself — known for his roles in The Killing Fields, A Room with a View, Leaving Las Vegas, Warlock, Arachnophobia, Boxing Helena, 24, Smallville and Banshee — the family statement said, “We continue to hold Julian in our hearts, with bright memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts,...

As befitting its status as one of the world’s biggest companies, every now and then Amazon likes to take a big swing with its Prime Video originals. With its list of new releases for April 2023, the streamer is taking one of its biggest swings yet.
Though it’s not quite as vast or expensive as fellow Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Citadel (premiering April 28) is a massive, massive undertaking. Starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, this spy series is described as “an expansive and groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series.” This means that the Russo Brothers-produced project will eventually feature several spinoffs in multiple countries and languages around the world. Neat-o!

When casting the hottest action stars for John Wick: Chapter 4, Scott Adkins was a natural choice. Director Chad Stahelski has tried to get Adkins into all the John Wick movies, but due to scheduling conflicts it hasn’t worked out until now. Cast as Fat Killa in the new movie, Adkins is almost unrecognizable under the heavy makeup, gold grill, and fat suit. In real life, Adkins is devilishly handsome, so much so he often plays villains. He’s also built like Adonis but even more yoked. It’s a body he’s earned through a lifetime of martial arts practice.
In real life, the Adkins family are butchers by trade. Adkins was born and raised in England, and his first exposure to martial arts began at age 10 with Judo. When he was 13, he was the victim of a robbery, and that experience hardened his resolve. After that, he dedicated his life to training,...

The label "direct-to-video" used to be a death knell for filmmakers and movie fans alike. In the early days of home video, the term typically referred to features that weren't good enough to get theatrical distribution, causing studios to subsequently dump them onto the shelves of Blockbusters and Hollywood Videos, where — via gaudy box art, ridiculous taglines and/or highlighting the name of a slumming movie star or a legit celebrity (who would likely only have a cameo role) — they would try to entice naïve renters to check it out.
It can be exceedingly difficult for a subgenre to change a poor reputation, but everything started to change once theatrical distribution was no longer the only game in Hollywood as video, cable, and streaming services became more ubiquitous. British actor Julian Sands has gone missing while hiking in southern California.
The prolific film and TV star was reported missing by his wife, the writer Evgenia Citkowitz, after going hiking in the San Gabriel mountains on Friday 13 January. He is a keen hiker, who once described his happiest moment as “close to a mountain summit on a glorious cold morning”.

Production wraps this week in Hungary on “Blade of the 47 Ronin,” a sequel to Universal’s 2013 Japanese-themed action classic “47 Ronin.” The new movie represents a substantial revamp that emphasizes Asian fantasy heroes and female characters and addresses some of the cultural criticisms of the previous Keanu Reeves-starring picture.
The action is moved forward by some 300 years to present-day Budapest, which is intended as a metaphor for East-West confluence, and where a meeting of the five Samurai clans is taking place. In addition to the male clan leaders, the meeting is also attended by three Onna Bugeisha (literally ‘Women Warriors’), though their presence is initially resented.
Production was handled by Universal Studios through its 1440 Productions unit for Netflix. The streamer is expected to release it sometime in 2022, though a specific date is still unknown.
The existence of female Samurai who fought alongside their male colleagues in feudal Japan is well documented.

Starting out with the likes of Stallone and Schwarzenegger, the VHS era gave birth to a myriad of action movie superstars: guys like Jean-Claude Van Damme, Steven Seagal, Jeff Speakman, Jeff Wincott and the queen of action films Cynthia Rothrock… all of whom carved out careers in what were – for the most part – direct to video films.

As his advancing years have robbed his body of some of its elasticity, Jackie Chan has necessarily put behind him the bonkers, stunt-infused, heroic pieces like Project A, Wheels on Meals, Operation Condor, Armour of God and the Police Story franchise that characterised his work in the 1980′s and early 90′s. Lately, he’s alternated kiddie-friendly fare such as The Medallion, The Spy Next Door and Kung Fu Panda with comedy outings like Rush Hour, Shanghai Noon and Around the World in 80 Days.
Now, Chan seems to be trying his hand at something different again, with the epic-looking 1911. It is hard to glean too much from this first teaser trailer, however Chan looks altogether serious and given that it looks to have all the trappings of a full-blown propaganda piece about the 1911 Chinese Revolution, that comes as no surprise. The release date is scheduled to coincide with the 100th...

Simon West’s “Medallion”, not to be confused with the 2003 Jackie Chan movie “The Medallion”, has found itself a new leading man. Nicolas Cage has officially signed on to star in the film, playing a father and former master thief who has just a few hours to find his daughter when she is kidnapped and locked in the trunk of a New York medallion taxi cab. You know, that old thing. Oh, New York. Not an easy feat, given that there are, like, a bazillion cabs in New York and such. People there really, really don’tlike driving, apparently. Clive Owen and Jason Statham were attached to “Medallion” at one point or another, but it looks like the price was right for Cage. Then again, when has the price not been right for Cage? I’m just saying. Have you seen how awful his upcoming “Season of the Witch” looks?...

It’s been a rough road to middle age for the action star, who, after commercializing Asian martial arts films in a way Bruce Lee could have never dreamed, has struggled from convoluted kid film to convoluted kid film over the past decade, occasionally offering a tired reminder of the wall-jumping great he once was (Rush Hour 3, The Forbidden Kingdom, etc.).

Director: Chee Keong Cheung. Review: Adam Wing. Twelve follows the story of an illegal underground fighting tournament with a prize fund of £500, 000 for anyone lucky enough, and talented enough to survive. The twelve fighters come from a variety of backgrounds, each hand picked for a gruelling no-holds barred competition, intended to push each of them to their limits. There can only be one winner, and the cast of characters will be familiar to English TV fans and action junkies the world over. Could I possibly have picked two martial arts films further apart on the ratings scale than Wushu and Fireball? On one end of the spectrum is the first "family" martial-arts film I've ever seen that wasn't American in origin, and on the other end is pure martial-arts porn, in which whatever plot is present serves to string hard-core brutal action sequences together. Both films are now available on DVD from Lionsgate Films.
Jackie Chan Presents Wushu

In 1997, the sovereignty of Hong Kong reverted from the U.K. to the People's Republic of China. In those days, several Hong Kong stars and filmmakers fled for the United States, fearful of their creative freedom under the new Communist government. Many people consider the years between 1986 and roughly 1992 the golden age of Hong Kong, martial arts cinema, though many interesting things have certainly happened since then, as well as some unfortunate things. Following is my assessment.
1.
Best: Jet Li
Worst: Jackie Chan
Don't get me wrong. I love Jackie Chan. Meeting him was an honor I'll never forget, but no one can argue that his Hollywood period, beginning in 1996 with the edited, dubbed version of Rumble in the Bronx, is anywhere near as good as his peak in Hong Kong, from the mid-1980s to 1994. We could start with the dumb, annoying, but extremely popular Rush Hour films, and...

Old school video game fans are not going to be happy with this! A trailer for the live-action adaptation of the classic Snk 2D fighting game The King of Fighters has surfaced online and it looks as though it’s a serious contender for the worst video game-to-film adaptation ever made.
Starring Sean Faris (Never Back Down), Maggie Q (Live Free or Die Hard), Will Yun Lee (Elektra), and martial arts expert Ray Park (Darth Maul from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace), The King of Fighters is directed by Gordon Chan, who although was behind the terrible Jackie Chan film The Medallion, also made the much loved Jet Li classic Fist of Legend.
The film’s premise is wildly different from the game it’s based upon. According to Movieset:
“The King of Fighters movie will introduce a new science fiction spin into the setting established in the games’ universe...

Hey look, it's another low budget video game adaptation that's got direct-to-dvd written all over it! The King of Fighters is based on a series of fighting games that was first released for the Neo Geo console and in arcades back in the mid-'90s. Since the Neo Geo was the uber-expensive video game system that only rich kids had, I never really got into it, but they're still making new installments today so it's definitely got a following. The movie doesn't seem to be based on the plot of any one particular game, and according to Wikipedia [1], has a sci-fi twist that involves members of three legendary fighting clans who get transported to alternate dimensions where they must fight the inhabitants of each world. This promo trailer, however, doesn't convey much of a plot at all. Gordon Chan (Fist of Legend, The Medallion) is directing the movie, and it...

The full Cannes promo (sans behind-the-scenes talking heads) for Gordon Chan's (Painted Skin, The Medallion) adaptation of the popular King of Fighters video game just fell into our laps so we thought we'd share it with y'all.
The film looks pretty fun, but about as good an adaptation as Corey Yuen's D.O.A.: Dead or Alive, which is to say there's not much more than a constant flow of well choreographed fight scenes going on. Some things I like about this trailer are flaming fisticuffs, multiple dimensions and that guy who played Darth Maul, Ray Park.
Synopsis:
The last surviving descendants of three legendary clans are continuously transported to other dimensions to test their martial arts skills against an evil force that seeks to invade and infect the real world.
King of Fighters also stars Maggie Q and Sean Faris and is due sometime in 2010.

Wait, you’re telling me that there’s a King Of Fighters movie coming out starring Ray Park and Maggie Q? I’ve no idea how long this has been in development, but I’ll be damned if I’ve heard anything about it until this trailer/interview clip popped up on the internet. The film is directed by Gordon Chan (who we have to thank for The Medallion), and is exactly how you might imagine a hastily made King Of Fighters movie might look like. I can...

As stated in my introductory post [1] for Killer Imports [2], I wanted to write some posts other than reviews. This post addresses a topic that I’ve always wondered about. I was tempted to add the word "always" to the title of this article, because I can’t think of a single Asian director who has succeeded in Hollywood. When I say Asian, I should qualify that I mean directors who were not born on American soil. And when I say succeed, I mean in both critical and financial terms, and more often than not, these two ways of judging movies don’t go hand in hand. And of course, I’m generalizing. I admit I am also comparing their Hollywood films with the films they have made on their own soil. In a sense, this article is probably being unfair. In some cases, these Asian directors are hired to recreate...

Fresh(ish) from beating Bruce Willis to a mushy pulp in Live Free Or Die Hard, Maggie Q has jumped on board King Of Fighters, an English-language live-action reboot of the popular ‘90s Japanese videogame series.Hong Kong director Gordon Chan (Fist Of Legend, The Medallion) is charged with pulling off that rarest of feats and making a watchable video game adaptation, a task made easier by a capable cast, including Q, Will Yun Lee, Sean Faris and Darth Maul himself, Ray Park. With King Of Fighters’ Vancouver shoot scheduled to wrap in January, Maggie Q fans can expect to see her chopping some serious sock towards the end of 2009.
