With a new solo album coming this fall, David Gilmour will return to the United States for a handful of shows for the first time in eight years. The artist, who is releasing Luck and Strange on Sept. 6, will perform at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl on Oct. 29, 30, and 31 and New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Nov. 4, 5, 6, 9, and 10. A teaser clip for the tour includes Pink Floyd’s “High Hopes,” Luck and Strange’s “The Piper’s Call,” and Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” — ostensibly suggesting that Gilmour will...

David Gilmour announced the first dates of his Luck and Strange tour last week, but he told Uncut that it’s going to be a very different tour from his previous ones because of an “unwillingness to revisit the Pink Floyd of the Seventies.” He went on to explain that he was willing to play Floyd songs from the Syd Barrett period of the Sixties, and his own era fronting the group in the late Eighties and early Nineties.

David Gilmour is planning to promote his upcoming solo album, Luck and Strange, with a rare tour. Just don’t show up expecting to hear Pink Floyd hits like “Wish You Were Here,” “Comfortably Numb,” or “Money.” In a new interview with Uncut, Gilmour said he has an “unwillingness to revisit the Pink Floyd of the Seventies” and would rather focus the set around his new album and other periods of Floyd’s history.

Remaking a 2002 Hong Kong hit and setting the story in Irish-Catholic Boston, Martin Scorsese seemed to be out of his element with The Departed—if not, that is, for the fact that the film marked a return to the director’s bread-and-butter mean streets, and that his source material, Wai Keung Lau and Siu Fai Mak’s Infernal Affairs, was itself heavily influenced by his iconic gangster films. Something of a genre homecoming after recent detours into the arenas of the historical epic (Gangs of New York) and the period biopic (The Aviator), The Departed again found him trawling a gritty, brutal urban underbelly where racial epithets spit from roughnecks’ mouths, class divisions are as sharp as a switchblade, and allegiances to others and one’s self are always tenuous at best.

Torun, Poland, is a quiet hamlet nearly three hours from Warsaw, and one of the hallmarks of the yearly Camerimage Film Festival—celebrating the best and brightest in the world of cinematography—is how tranquil and non-dramatic it is.
Until this year, that is.
After a not-having-it-at-all “Ferrari” star Adam Driver’s slyly profane rejection of a dopey audience query got the internet all hot and bothered, Boomtown Rats frontman and Live Aid mastermind basically Bob Geldof said “I can top that!” with a much more profane, much more indicting and all-around hilarious roasting of not only himself, but the film he was there to support: Alan Parker’s visually innovative 1982 rock opera “Pink Floyd the Wall,” one of several retrospective screenings celebrating the career of Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Peter Biziou, an Oscar-winning director of photography.

Greatness recognizes greatness. For example, Elvis Presley‘s daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, discussed why she loved one Pink Floyd album so much. She said one song from that record was her “Bible.” In addition, she named other tunes from the record that she enjoyed.
Lisa Marie Presley said 1 Pink Floyd album resonated with her as a ‘tormented teen’
During a 2012 interview with Goldmine, Lisa Marie was asked to name the albums that impacted her when she was young. “The Wall by Pink Floyd would be my No. 1 album that was very defining heading into being 13-14 years of age, an anguished, tormented teen with hormones going,” she recalled. “Angry and not knowing what I was angry about. You know, the feeling of ‘Nobody understands me.'” For context, The Wall came out in 1979, two years after Elvis’ death.

Around 10:20 p.m. on Saturday night, a shadowy group of figures walked onto the Farm Aid stage at the Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana. This was supposed to be the moment where Wille Nelson wrapped up the night, but there was no sign of the Red Headed Stranger or his band. Instead, another act was plugging in instruments on the darkened stage. There was no announcement of any kind, and the large screens on both sides of the stage went completely blank for the first time all day.

David Gilmour and Roger Waters helped guide Pink Floyd to classic rock superstardom, but they rarely agreed on anything. They settled their conflict over “Comfortably Numb” by combining their ideas, which might have been their last compromise as the group began splintering around that time. Years before making that song, though, Waters and Gilmour hated the results of the epic Pink Floyd song “Atom Heart Mother.”
David Gilmour and Roger Waters hated the Pink Floyd song ‘Atom Heart Mother’
When Pink Floyd lost the creative genius of Syd Barrett (possibly to a combination of an existing mental condition and heavy use of psychoactive drugs), the band struggled to find its way.
They stayed on the psychedelic path (A Saucerful of Secrets). They cranked out a smorgasbord of a film soundtrack (More). And Floyd released a double album that included an LP’s worth of songs the four members played and...

Pink Floyd had one of the most remarkable reinventions of any classic rock band. The psychedelic pioneers lost their creative leader when they parted ways with Syd Barrett in 1968. After searching for a way forward without him, they eventually found their path and became one of the biggest bands of the 1970s with the impactful The Dark Side of the Moon. That album was a cornerstone of their career, but several underrated Pink Floyd songs from the band’s catalog deserve recognition. (All songs presented in chronological order).
1. ‘The Nile Song’ Album: More
Pink Floyd’s first effort without any contribution from Barrett was their soundtrack to the 1969 movie More. Without their mercurial leader and with the freedom to create for someone else’s project instead of their own album, the band showed off a range of styles. “The Nile Song” proved to be the most unprecedented song on the tracklist.

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason believes getting David Gilmour and Roger Waters on the same page for a reunion would require something like a miracle. While speaking about the band’s The Dark Side of the Moon classic “Time” on the latest episode of The Story Behind the Song, Mason said he thinks it would take someone like the late Nelson Mandela to broker a reconciliation between Gilmour and Waters.
“I think it’s highly unlikely, but I would’ve said that before Live 8 — 10 years ago or 12 years ago, whatever it was,” Mason said. “The one thing I could think would be possible would be if there was some… if by getting back together we could influence saving the planet, world peace, or whatever. Hopefully, we’d step up. But I don’t think otherwise. It would take a Nelson Mandela or someone like that to lead on it.”

Pink Floyd had one of the most interesting career arcs of any classic rock band. They started life as late 1960s psychedelic masters championed by Paul McCartney before morphing into a prog rock powerhouse in the 1970s. They became world beaters, but drummer Nick Mason said Pink Floyd’s first concerts were a load of rubbish between a few good ideas. Still, the band’s embryonic days gave them the cred to carry on through a key lineup change before they morphed into a classic rock staple.
Nick Mason said Pink Floyd played ‘a hell of a lot of rubbish’ at their earliest concerts
Pink Floyd started out similar to The Beatles. They played live in front of smallish crowds before finding domestic and then international fame. The biggest difference was that Pink Floyd rose to prominence in swinging London long after the Fab Four broke out of Liverpool to become world famous.

Even before they became a legendary classic rock band, Pink Floyd had some famous fans. Paul McCartney predicted the band’s success as Floyd cut their debut album next door to The Beatles. Bassist Roger Waters and guitarist David Gilmour had a conflict while making The Wall song “Comfortably Numb,” but they actually arrived at an amicable compromise. That happened just before the egos within Pink Floyd eventually led to the band’s ugly split, just like The Beatles.

One of the most moving scenes in Roger Waters The Wall finds the former Pink Floyd singer visiting the grave of his grandfather, George Henry Waters, who died while fighting in France during World War I. A clip of the scene, which comes via Ultimate Classic Rock, shows Waters reading the headstone then cuts back to reveal the singer standing with his children, looking down at the grave. "It's been an ambition of mine to come here with you three," he says. "Two great-grandsons, a great-granddaughter and a grandson." Daughter...

Michael Mann has perhaps one of the most unique and innovative directors working today. From what is arguably the greatest La crime saga of all time in Heat to the beautiful romance of The Last of the Mohicans and bringing Hannibal Lectre to the big screen for the first time in Manhunter, Mann has created a vast and wide ranging filmography.
A new 9 minute video released on IndieWire called The Sublime Presence in Michael Mann’s Films examines what exactly gives Michael Mann films their undeniable and fiery energy. Created by Tom Kramer, the essay examines most of Mann’s most legendary work. Manhunter, Thief, Heat, The Last of the Mohicans, The Insider, Collateral, and others are weaved together. Set to Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” the video delves into the rich, complex world of Mann’s films and his often cold characters.

Roger Waters celebrated his 71st birthday September 6th at the Toronto International Film Festival by attending the world premiere of his new documentary Roger Waters: The Wall. Tiff was the perfect venue for the former Pink Floyd bassist to debut his film since The Wall Live tour actually began its run at Toronto's Air Canada Centre on September 15, 2010, so Roger Waters: The Wall's Tiff premiere was like coming full circle. Also, what better way to follow "Bill Murray Day" than with a film that explores Waters' epic tour from behind "the Wall.

This week’s episode of The Leftovers is fantastic for three — count ’em, three — reasons: 1. It’s all about Nora (who, next to Garvey, is the series’ most likeable character). 2. Carrie Coons is flippin’ brilliant in the role (wouldn’t you agree?). 3. Nora actually ends the hour in a better place than she begins it (and when has that ever happened to anyone on this show before?). As an added bonus, the path that she takes to a brighter outlook is a fascinating and twisty one. Follow along, and I’ll lay out a trail of bread crumbs…

Pink Floyd The Wall is a feature length music video filmed in an era when those were something a bit more interesting than the video wallpaper we see today. It tells the story of Pink, a rock star who is really an amalgam of Pink Floyd’s founding members Syd Barrett and Roger Waters, as well as some other rock stars Waters had met or heard about.
The movie is about his decension into madness. He is unable to cope with his father’s death in WWII, his mother who paid little or no attention to him, his “conveyor belt” schooling of facelessness, all the...

The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach told Rolling Stone that the goal with the duo’s eighth album, “Turn Blue,” out tomorrow (13), was to make a “headphone record.” Well, they have certainly done that. In fact, listening to the album through speakers feels like you’re doing it a disservice and missing lovingly crafted details. “Turn Blue” is an album that is meant to be heard in its entirety with your full attention as the music pans from left to right and flows from your ears into your brain. It is not background music. In fact, we’d suggest to get the full effect, sink into a bean bag chair and a lava lamp. The album gets off to a trippy start with the nearly seven-minute fuzzy opus,“Weight Of Love.” But that only hints at what’s to come. On “Turn Blue,” a punchy guitar line morphs into a sonic...

It was a murderer’s row of comic all-stars last night at the New York Comedy Festival’s Stand Up For Heroes event to raise money for the Bob Woodruff Foundation and America’s injured war veterans. Jon Stewart. Bill Cosby. Jim Gaffigan. Jerry Seinfeld. Hall of Famers all. But who knew the iconic rock star was a frustrated comic deep down? Bruce Springsteen, taking the stage last, not only performed three classic songs, but he set them up with some jokes. Some dirty jokes.

Roger Waters called for a boycott of Israel earlier this year, and now the former Pink Floyd singer-bassist is defending his The Wall Live Tour from accusations of anti-semitism in a Facebook post, titled "An open letter from Roger Waters." Waters begins the letter by explaining the recent controversy that erupted after a performance in Belgium last week: An Israeli man alerted a news source with video footage of a Star of David-marked prop pig that was featured in the show and destroyed by the audience at the end of the performance.

The Grammys are this Sunday, which is exciting for award show fans and depressing for people who think those awards should go to the right people. Sigh. Here are five current artists still in need of official Grammy love.
5. Scissor Sisters
(source)
Since the Scissor Sisters emerged a decade ago, their style has remained as quirky and danceable as anything Lady Gaga's ever produced, yet the Grammys haven't been as keen to reward the ragtag group with their due props. They've only been nominated once in the Best Dance Recording category, where the group's take on "Comfortably Numb" lost to Britney Spears' sole moment of brilliance, "Toxic." Where's the love for "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'"? Or this year's wickedly saucy "Let's Have a Kiki"?
4. Adam Lambert

Straight away, the task of attempting to rank something as indeterminate as the top ten guitar solos ever is daunting, to say the least. How many genres do you take into consideration? Is acoustic given an equal consideration with electric? Do you judge it based on popularity, complexity, time length, or other factors? Whose opinion do you listen to?
Without further ado, here is one more version of the top ten guitar solos of all time:
Eruption – Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen, 1978). From the instant this searing explosion of notes erupts from the speakers, this aptly-named track stands out above all others as the purest pursuit of guitar playing perfection. Eddie’s virtuoso mastery of finger tapping, gonzo whammy bar dips, and artificial harmonics all come together in a staggering showcase of a man who forever changedthe way electric guitar was played. Comfortably Numb – David Gilmour (Pink Floyd’s The Wall,...

Fellini, Lynch and Bergman have all made adverts, so why shouldn't Anderson? Maybe because he's ended up making The Royal Tenenbaums with none of the plot or pathos
You don't need to see the credits for the newish Hyundai Azera ads to know they were made by Wes Anderson. The first shouts Tenenbaum, the second drips Zissou. The question that has sent the New Yorker, Slate and others into twitters over the last few days is whether these ads make Anderson a "sellout".
Anderson's style is actually a great fit for advertising. It's tough to get viewers to pay attention to a TV ad, especially after they've seen it (and hated it) once. But Anderson packs in so much detail, one YouTube commenter said he'd been sitting in front of the first frame for 30 minutes, soaking up the visual jokes. Now that's sticky advertising.
But is it a sellout? The wise have stroked their beards,...

Here's eleven of my favorite new rock tunes for your early spring listening pleasure. Enjoy the melodic sunshine, people.
"Eskimo Kiss" The Kooks Junk of the Heart (Astralwerks)
Not sure why my fellow critics insist on dropping the "sounds like The Strokes" tag on these Brits. And some scribes have whined they aren't "edgy" enough. So what. I hear more of The Kinks and The La's as reference points. And to me, that's much better company if you love more pop in your rock. Case in point, the infectious ear candy of "Eskimo Kiss," my pick hit from their latest long player (LP). Currently on tour in the U.S. of A.
"Stay At Home" Yellow Ostrich Strange Land (Barsuk)

Happy Birthday to Kiki Dee, who is 65, Stephen Schwartz is 64, Connie Britton is 45, Eddie Deezen is 54, and David Gilmour is 66. Time to name your top five Pink Floyd songs. Here are my picks: 5. "Another Brick In The Wall'," 4. "Learning To Fly," 3. "Wish You Were Here," 2. "Comfortably Numb," 1. "Welcome To The Machine".
The 2012 London Olympics has released a "Diversity and Inclusion Quiz" for Olympic volunteers to help them deal with certain situations that may arise. In the gay section is this scenario: A spectator made "very uncomfortable" by two men sitting next to him holding hands. The choices are "tell him to stop being a homophobic idiot" or "politely ask the couple to stop holding hands" or "explain that there is a huge diversity of people at the London 2012 Games, which includes gay, lesbian and bisexual individuals and couples." Hmm, I can't decide.

hollywoodnews.com: The news broke today—Twentieth Century Fox has finally chosen a new director for its upcoming project, “The Wolverine”. James Mangold (“Walk the Line”, “Knight and Day”) will helm the sequel to “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” The studio had been on the hunt since original pick Darren Aronofsky (“Black Swan”, “The Wrestler”) dropped out of the project in March.
Said Aronofsky upon his departure, “It became clear that the production of “The Wolverine” would keep me out of the country for almost a year. I was not comfortable being away from my family for that length of time. I am sad that I won’t be able to see the project through as it is a terrific script and I was very much looking forward to working with my friend, Hugh Jackman, again.”
Also considered for the director role were Gavin O’Connor (“Miracle”, “Comfortably Numb...

Pink Floyd were reunited on stage at London's O2 Arena last night during Roger Waters's solo concert date. The bassist is currently on a solo tour performing a rendition of the band's The Wall album, which was released in 1979 and featured their most commercially successful hit 'Another Brick in the Wall Part 2'. During last night's show, Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour and drummer Nick Mason joined Waters on stage. Gilmour supplied guitar for the track 'Comfortably Numb', while Mason joined them for a performance of 'Outside the Wall', which was the final song of the night. The concert features a wall being built up in front of the crowd, on top of which Gilmour played his final guitar solo, which is reminiscent of the band's original 'The Wall' concerts in 1980-81. The reunion (more)...

It’s surprising that it took 20 years from Freddie Mercury’s death at age 45 for a major Queen biography to appear. Mark Blake clearly knows the British-rock-supergroup terrain: He wrote the well-received 2007 Pink Floyd overview Comfortably Numb. But Queen’s story has been a tough nut to crack for some time. The band’s excesses are legendary—not least the famed 1978 New Orleans Halloween bash that involved 400 invited guests and legions of strippers. That story seems underserved by Is This The Real Life?, in ways typical of rock bios of acts that, like Queen, keep ...

David Gilmour will reportedly reunite with his ex-Pink Floyd bandmate Roger Waters for a one-off performance. Waters begins his UK leg of 'The Wall Live' tour - a show based on Pink Floyd's 1980/81 tour of the band's The Wall album - on May 11. Speaking to Sky News about the possibility of Gilmour joining him on stage, Waters said: "I think it's beginning to look now as if he'll (Gilmour) do one gig. He'll do 'Comfortably Numb' at one gig. It's a big secret when." The performance will be the first live reunion of the pair since 2005's (more)...

Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters and David Gilmour are performing together for a rare performance sometime this spring, during the former’s The Wall Live tour in England. Waters told Sky News that “it’s beginning to look now as if [Gilmour] will do one gig,” for one song: “Comfortably Numb.” “It’s a big secret when.” The Wall, which already made its way around America, is scheduled for May 11-12, 14-15 and 17 at London’s O2 Arena and May 20-21 at Manchester’s Men Arena. During the show, an actual 240 ft. wall is constructed as Waters and his band play through the famed...

Pink Floyd have put their legal dispute with Emi bosses firmly behind them - they've signed a new contract with the label. The "Comfortably Numb" hitmakers have inked a five-year deal with executives at the firm, who first signed the band in the 1960s. A statement from Emi reads: "All legal disputes between the band and the company have been settled as a result of this new deal."
The agreement comes one month after a judge ruled Emi bosses breached a previous deal by selling single Pink Floyd tracks online. The band had argued that their "seamless" albums should not be split up to be sold on the internet, while Emi claimed the previous contract had been drawn up before the digital era and didn't outline regulations for online distribution.

This is a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb.” Let me just forewarn you by saying that everything about this video is perfect, and by perfect I mean amazing. And by amazing I mean terrible. From the huge sign that says “Music” in the background to the pumpkins resting on the hay bales to the lead singer’s wrap around sunglasses on his head. Rad guitar solo at 2:07. I want to go to one of those Pink Floyd The Wall planetarium nights with the lasers (do those still exist or am I totally #why90srocked right now? Ha! They do!!) and replace their version with this version and watch all the kids immediatley sober up, reassess their lives and go home and do their homework. Buzzfeed...
