From the directors of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin comes Moana - and you can see it early in London with us...
Arriving in cinemas on December 2nd in the UK is the latest film from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Moana. We are rather excited about it.
It's from the directing team behind The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules and more, Ron Clements and John Musker. And it comes off the back of an incredible run of Disney animated features, up to and including this year's Zootropolis.
Here's the outline of just what Moana is about:
For centuries, the greatest sailors in the world masterfully navigated the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, 3,000 years ago, their voyages stopped for a millennium – and no one knows exactly why.

Disney’s “Moana” (opening November 23rd) boasts several animation breakthroughs: It will be the first major movie ever translated into Tahitian; the teenage heroine (voiced by Hawaiian newcomer Auli’i Cravalho) has no love interest; and, it’s the first CG feature directed by Disney hand-drawn vets John Musker and Ron Clements (“The Princess and the Frog,” “Aladdin,” “The Little Mermaid”).
“Moana” also marks the feature producing debut of Osnat Shurer, who was in charge of the shorts program at Pixar (“Lifted,” “One Man Band,” “Boundin'”), and later jumped to Disney to head development before getting the promotion. However, Musker said her pre-Pixar experience was just as valuable; before she joined the animation house in 2002, she’d served as an independent documentary producer with shoots in India, Tibet, China, Japan, Israel, and Turkey.

After a few shorter previews, the first full-length trailer has arrived for Disney Animation’s Dwayne Johnson-led Moana, which tells the adventurous journey of Moana (newcomer Auli’i Cravalho) and her muscular demi-god companion Maui (Johnson) as they sail the seas. Johnson has been very vocal about the film, promising a wonderful and touching experience for the entire family. The project is in the hands of long-time Disney Animation collaborators John Musker and Ron Clements, who are both directing Moana, and have previously helmed the likes of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin.
Johnson has solid comedic timing, and he seems to work nicely in tandem with rookie Cravalho, who just very well may steal the show. Cravalho was only 14 when she started work on Moana, and was cast while still a freshman in high school to voice the titular hero. See the full trailer, which also features original music...

After a quick tease last week, Disney has released the new TV spot for the studio's latest animated feature film, Moana, that debuted yesterday during the Rio Olympics. Aside from looking jaw-droppingly gorgeous (as many Walt Disney Animation films tend to), this movie just looks like a tremendous amount of fun, with Dwayne Johnson's larger-than-life demigod Maui goofing around and being kept on his toes by the adventurer Moana (newcomer Auli'i Cravalho) as they take to the open seas. Plus, we get a taste of new music for the movie partly created by Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda. Check it out below:

If you happened to be tuned into the Olympics last night, you saw a new extended TV spot for the Dwayne Johnson-led Moana, and now Disney Animation has released it online. Their newest venture after the colossal success of Zootopia follows the titular Moana (Auli’i Cravalho), who sails with her hero and companion, the demi-god Maui (Johnson) to a legendary island using her navigational skills. Dwayne looks to play the sweet, goofy, shape-shifting Maui well, hitting a nice counter-note to the brave, venturous Moana to make the perfect pairing.
It promises to be a touching, rousing adventure that should continue Disney Animation’s winning streak, especially in the hands of long-time Disney writer-directors Ron Clements and John Musker (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin). See the extended TV spot below, along with character photos, for the film that also stars Alan Tudyk, Jermaine Clement, and Nicole Scherzinger.

Disney's Moana is just a few shorts months away! Before the animated Hawaiian-themed film hits theaters, meet the rest of the characters that will help Moana and Maui in their quest!
We already know the Demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) who is half god, half mortal, all awesome! Although, we haven't yet had the pleasure of meeting the rest of the characters in the gorgeous story of Disney's Moana! Let's find out more about them!
Jemaine Clement (“The Bfg,” “Despicable Me,” “Rio,” “Rio 2,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” Flight of the Conchords) provides the voice of Tamatoa, a self-absorbed, 50-foot crab who lives in Lalotai, the realm of monsters. The conceited crustacean wants to be more than a “bottom feeder” and overcompensates for this perceived shortcoming by covering himself in all things shiny.

Following up thier monster hit Zootopia, Disney Animation is back this winter with Moana, directed by Ron Clements and John Musker (Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Frog). As seen in the first trailer earlier this summer, it follows our title character (voiced by Auli’i Cravalho) who is guided by the demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) on an adventure in the South Pacific.
A second trailer has now arrived hailing from Japan and focusing solely on Baby Moana. It introduces some of the more magical touches as the Pacific Ocean becomes alive, fully interacting with the character. Also featuring a script co-written by Taika Waititi and music from Lin-Manuel Miranda, check out the new trailer and international posters below.

During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli’i Cravalho) meets the once-mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity. Directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “The Princess & the Frog”) and produced by Osnat Shurer (“Lifted,” “One Man Band”),
Moana sails into U.S. theaters on Nov. 23, 2016.

Previously, Hamilton songwriting star Lin-Manuel Miranda had been talking to Gold Derby about why he chose the project. It turns out that one of Miranda's first influences as a child was The Little Mermaid and so the return of directors Ron Clements and John Musker to the Disney stable for Moana was a deciding factor.

WWE appeared to form the 2016 version of The Job Squad on last night’s Raw. Heath Slater fronted a new faction called “Social Outcasts” along with Curtis Axel, Bo Dallas and Adam Rose.
The Showoff and Slater faced off in a singles match, but instead of appearing alone – which Heath has done since 3Mb members Drew McIntyre and Jinder Mahal were fired in 2014 – The One Man Band was accompanied by Messrs Axel, Rose and Dallas with no explanation.
However, if you look at each of the Superstar’s social media accounts, you’ll notice that they were all tweeting about ‘change’ in the build up to Raw – hinting that a new faction could be on the horizon.

After a long, worldwide search for the voice of Moana, Disney has found it in a 14 year old newcomer! Read on for more details!
Frequent readers of Cinelinx will know that we often report that Disney has cast or hired an unknown talent to helm a rather large project. With their new Hawaiian hit, they've decided to dip back in the pool of obscurity and pluck out a fresh new talent to be the voice of their lead character. Playing Moana will be native Hawaiian Auli'i Cravalho, seen below.
Cravalho, only 14, was one of a small pool of young actresses brought back for the final auditions and according to the crew of Moana, she nailed it.
According to producer Osnat Shurer, “Her audition was fantastic – she was such a raw talent. Auli’i was among a small number of girls we brought back for a second round of auditions. Then...

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Moana has found her voice following a worldwide search to cast the film’s title character. Native Hawaiian newcomer Auli’i Cravalho, 14, joins Dwayne Johnson in the big-screen adventure about a spirited and fearless teenager named Moana (voice of Cravalho) who, with help from demi-god Maui (voice of Johnson), sets out on a daring mission to prove herself a master wayfinder.
While hundreds of talented people from across the Pacific Islands were eager to try out for the role, Cravalho set her sights firmly on her sophomore year of high school. “I didn’t think I would have a chance,” she said. “When I was little, I used to dance around the house singing at the top of my lungs. Disney's big D23 Expo is underway and last night the House of Mouse started things off with a look at the upcoming films on their animation slate. This included new looks and information on Finding Dory, Toy Story 4, Moana, and a few more. Come inside to check it all out in one spot.
We already reported on one of the new animated films that was announced last night, Gigantic, but there was so much more Disney had in store for attendees at D23. While the majority of information came from previously annnounced films, there was another new animation project revealed in the form of Coco:

Firmly into the home straight for Wrestlemania 31 from Santa Clara and off of the back of last night’s Raw, it appears the final card has been set, although you should expect to see some kind of Tag Title match added at some point, probably for the mammoth Pre-Show!
Officially added to the card last night was the long suspected, long awaited clash between ‘The Viper’ Randy Ortron and ‘Mr. Money in the Bank’ Seth Rollins. Rollins officially accepted Orton’s challenge in the opening segment on the condition Orton face Rollins later in the show.
Far from WWE to give away one of ‘Mania’s marquee match-ups, this of course was a tease of not just the Orton vs. Rollins match but also Sting’s first ever WWE match against Triple H, when he joined Orton in the ring to fend of the Authority as Raw went off the air.

Scientists have speculated about Vincent van Gogh's psychotic episodes, like the one where he cut off his ear, and some believe his underlying conditions of depression and seizures were aggravated by absinthe, nicotine, alcohol, and turpentine.

To mark the release of Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, Rob takes us through the high points of Alan Partridge's TV career...
Certain TV shows are watched so excessively that quoting them in general conversation has just became part of the norm. The Office, The Simpsons and Spaced are three such, but none have been stolen from with quite as much regularity as Norfolk’s favourite son, Alan Partridge. For better or for worse, Partridgisms have cemented their place in our everyday vernacular. The likes of, “cos I’m a bloody bloke”, “see the match?” and “scum, sub-human scum” are just a few of the phrases that AP (with a little help from his writers) has gifted to the world over the years.
He may be a socially awkward, insensitive, selfish, narcissist obsessed with his own celebrity status, but despite all this, it’s hard to not love Alan.

Cougar Town continued its tradition of telling emotional, one-hour bookends to its seasons with “Don’t Fade on Me” and "Have Love Will Travel."
Chick’s recurring memory issues this season were finally diagnosed: he has Alzheimer’s. The “Old Timers Disease” is one of the saddest diagnoses a family member can get, and Jules handled it in the best way she knew how: with positivity, some wine and by latching on to a crazy idea.
Jules wanting to grant Chick’s one wish, just so he has something so powerful to hold on to as his memories begin to slip away, was the greatest present she could possibly leave him with. It was a deep and emotionally resonating moment for a show that devotes nearly every title card to self-deprecation.
Jules wanted to stay strong and positive, but her greatest fear has the potential to come true. Not only...

Exclusive: Wme has signed Mark Andrews. Sure you know him; he was the only Academy Award winner on Sunday who took the stage in a kilt, when he accepted the Best Animated Film prize for Brave with Brenda Chapman. He wrote and replaced Chapman as director on the Disney film. Before that, Andrews co-wrote the script for John Carter. His first Oscar nomination came in 2006 for his work on the short film One Man Band. Wme will help Andrews work on both live-action and animation projects in the future and explore opportunities in television as well. He continues to be represented by Nancy Newhouse Porter from Newhouse Porter Hubbard.

On Thursday evening at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills, the Academy invited movie fans to join in the celebration of the work of this year’s Oscar nominees in the Animated Feature Film category. Although not pictured above, director Tim Burton was on hand for the panel discussion hosted by actor Rob Riggle (Hotel Transylvania, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax).
The nominees discussed how their films were developed, talked about their creative processes, and presented clips illustrating their techniques. All were adamant in saying that animated films are not cartoons and that there is place for both stop-motion and CGI in the genre.
The Animated Feature Film nominees are:
Brave
Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman
This is the second nomination for Mark Andrews and the first in this category. He made his feature directorial debut with Brave.
After interning at Disney, Andrews worked as a story-board artist on several films.

Randy Orton returned to WWE action this week with a quick win over the ‘One Man Band’ Heath Slater on Raw. Following that victory he also featured on SmackDown, where he beat Alberto Del Rio via Dq. After the bout, the World Heavyweight Championship number one contender fell victim to the Rko.
With the return of Orton to in-ring action, let’s have a look at the possible challenges that the ‘Apex Predator’ could face.
1. Sheamus
While it has yet to be seen whether Orton will be getting involved in the title scene, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise given that if the ‘Celtic Warrior’ wins at Summerslam, he will have beaten Del Rio at two consecutive PPVs in one-on-one matches. It’s important that if the WWE are focused on longer title reigns for their top two titles, that they keep the matches and the competition varied.

So far we've featured SoundWorks Collection's behind-the-scenes featurettes diving into the sound of films like John Carter, The Hunger Games, The Avengers and Prometheus. However, live-action films have the benefit of capturing sound on location whilst filming (though there's plenty done in post-production). Meanwhile, animated films must create every single sound from scratch and without the help of a filming location, ambient sound and more. That's why this look into The Sound of Brave, the charming fairytale from Pixar, is so fascinating. From the sounds of bears to the more subtle sounds of archery, it's hard work. Here's the SoundWorks Collections featurette The Sound of Brave via Pixar Planet: Brave was originally being directed by Pixar's first female director, Brenda Chapman (of Prince of Egypt), but she was then joined by Mark Andrews (of the short One Man Band) who took over to help finish the movie. Disney released Pixar's...

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times – Mark Andrews, who makes his feature directorial debut this weekend on Pixar's heavily hyped, medieval girl-power romp "Brave" (taking duties over for Brenda Chapman, who parted ways with the film – more on that in a minute) was also an assistant director and co-writer on "John Carter," Disney's massively budgeted sci-fi spectacle that crashed and burned like an out-of-control Martian spaceship. Few filmmakers have been in the unenviable position of being involved in huge (and occasionally troubled) productions this close together. But anyone who has seen behind-the-scenes footage of Andrews knows that he is so excitable and energetic that he makes a rocket-powered cheetah look lazy by comparison. We talked to Andrews about the difficult process of making "Brave," what he wants to bring to the fairytale genre, and how he feels about the lackluster response to "John Carter.

Why Watch? This delightful animated short from director Sean Mullen reminds me so much of the beloved Pixar short One Man Band, mostly because of its persistent positive energy. It also follows a similar narrative line. Two artists come together in the same place, only to find art being thrown out the window and absurd competitive feats in its place. It’s a lovely, upbeat short that combines smooth animation with bright colors and a massive canvas of charisma. Just the sort of thing to pick you up in the middle of your Thursday workday. What will it cost? Exactly 3 minutes. Skip Work. You’ve Got Time For More Short Films...

Brave will be out in June so Disney is cranking up the publicity machine. Here are some concept sketches to give you more of an idea about the filme, featuring Pixar’s first heroine.
Merida (Voice of Kelly Macdonald)
Passionate and fiery, Merida is a headstrong teenager of royal upbringing who is struggling to take control of her own destiny. She feels most at home in the outdoors honing her impressive athletic skills as an archer and swordfighter, and racing across the magnificent Highland countryside with her faithful horse, Angus. With a spirit as vibrant as her untamed hair, Merida also has a softness of heart, especially when it comes to her wee triplet brothers. As the daughter of the King and Queen, her life is weighted with responsibilities and expectations, causing her to yearn to preserve her freedom and independence. When Merida blatantly defies an ancient tradition, the consequences...

With the relatively weak marketing for Pixar’s next film here in the states, we’ve got a reason to be excited thanks to a new trailer from overseas. Coming from Japan, this one does a much better job at actually laying out the story and hinting at a strong sense of adventure. We learn our lead character disrupts something in the forest which kicks off an adventure that presumably most of the film occupies. Although the full scene released last week was promising, it is nice to get a new perspective at this story.
Previously titled The Bear and the Bow, Brave is directed by Mark Andrews (who helmed the Pixar short One Man Band), Brave features Princess Merida (Kelly MacDonald), Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson), The Wise Woman (Julie Walters) and Lord MacIntosh (Craig Ferguson). Check out the new trailer below.

Marketing it as a trailer, Disney/Pixar have unveiled a new peek at their next animation, Brave. With a closer look this one is actually a 2-and-a-half minute scene from the folk tale story. It shows our lead character surprise at a bow-and-arrow contest in her town. I’m still not sold on the style they are going for here (it just looks a little plain), but a well-directed slow-motion section at the end was pretty neat. Check it out below via Apple, along with a new poster.

Why Watch? Because Guest Week is coming to a close and it’s time to bring out the big guns. As promised, it’s been a week of animated bliss — an overcompensation of sorts for all the live-action stuff programmed by this column’s rightful author. Not to jump the shark and go commercial all of the sudden, but a week of animated shorts isn’t complete without a little something from the brilliant minds at Pixar. In their library, the Emeryville Einsteins have plenty of great short films. Geri’s Game, For the Birds, Knick Knack and a number of others. But a personal favorite among those with a love for French style and theatrical characters is One Man Band, the story of two street performers, one little girl and a very important financial decision. It’s good for a long, sweet laugh. What will it cost? Four minutes and thirty four seconds of your fine...

Today we have some new images from major upcoming films. First up, we’ll tackle the smallest, with Tim Burton‘s feature-length adaptation of his black-and-white short Frankenweenie. We provided the first looks earlier this fall, but above we see another look at a boy and his dog. [1] Over the years, we've learned a lot about how Pixar develops and produces their feature animated films, but we've learned very little about how the beloved short films get created. So I decided it was time we find out. I shot a message over to Enrico Casarosa, the director of Pixar's next short film La Luna, who was happy to shed some light on the process. "How Does A Pixar Short Film Get Made?" Find out, after the jump. While most people won't get to see La Luna until its released in June 2012 attached to Brave, the short has been playing the film festival circuit and already short listed for the Best Animated Short Film Oscar. I was lucky enough to catch a screening of it at the 2011 Telluride Film Festival, and I loved it so much that they used my quote [2] in their "For Your Consideration" advertisements. [3] A Very...

Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In Brave, a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts.
Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an...

With Bryan Singer‘s Jack the Giant Killer and Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, there are a number of epic fantasy films hitting theaters next summer, but one I’m looking forward to most is a little different. Coming from Pixar, whose last two films have been part of a franchise (Toy Story 3 and Cars 2), they are getting back in the game of original properties with their release of their fantasy animation Brave.
Previously titled The Bear and the Bow, the film is directed by Mark Andrews (who helmed the Pixar short One Man Band), Brave features Princess Merida (Kelly MacDonald), Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson), The Wise Woman (Julie Walters) and Lord MacIntosh (Craig Ferguson). The first trailer we got was simply a tease of the world and animation style, but now a full-length one has arrived from DisneyPixar, which can be seen below.

Empire Online has several stills from the next Pixar Animation project “Brave.” These same stills were seen at the D23 Convention in Anaheim last August. The still shows the protagonist Merida and the three Scottish fathers of the Merida’s suitors. The film will be voiced by Kelly Macdonald (“No Country for Old Men,” “Boardwalk Empire”), Emma Thompson (“Sense and Sensibility,” “Love Actually”), Kevin McKidd (“Trainspotting,” “Dog Soldiers”), Julie Walters (“Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” “Gnomeo & Juliet”), Bill Connelly (“The Boondock Saints,” “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events”), Craig Ferguson (“Saving Grace,” “Doc Martin”) and Robbie Coltrane (“Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” “The World Is Not Enough”). Here is the synopsis: “Brave” is set in the mystical Scottish Highlands, where Merida is the princess of a kingdom ruled by King Fergus (Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Thompson). An unruly daughter and an accomplished archer, Merida...

Mainstream animation is thriving right now. But, as he looks ahead to some of the treats in store for 2012, Simon wonders if it's going to get even better...
There’s a school of thinking that, right now, we’re going through something of a second golden age of animation. The difference this time, though, is that this isn’t being driven by one company. Rather, that for the first time in the history, the mainstream movie animation industry has at least eleven companies capable of producing a strong animated movie.
If you want proof of that, firstly, take a glance at this year. Ilm burst into the animation industry (an area where it’s arguably existed for some time) with the superb Rango (still in my top five films of the year, and still thoroughly awesome), for starters.
We’ve also had Disney going close to its roots with Winnie The Pooh and Tangled,...

In recent years, Comic-Con has been criticized for becoming too Hollywood as all the major studios would come down to San Diego and woo fans with their upcoming projects. This year, Disney -- which owns both Marvel and Pixar -- didn't have a big presence [1] there. Most surmised that was because Disney has its own version of Comic-Con, The D23 Expo, a few weeks later. That was confirmed a few weeks ago [2] and now we have details on specifically which movies Disney will have on hand at D23, which takes place in Anaheim, CA from August 19-21. And if you thought Comic-Con was being invaded by movies, you ain't seen nothing yet. Confirmed films to have a presence at D23 are as follows: The Muppets, John Carter, Brave, The Avengers, Frankenweenie, Oz: The Great and Powerful, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, Wreck-It Ralph, and Monsters University. Attendees will also get to see the new,...
