A classic BTVS episode
katierose29518 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This is not only one of the funniest episodes of the season, it's also an important one. It introduces Giles' arch-enemy Ethan Rayne and Xander's on-again, off-again bully, Larry, both of whom will be in more episodes to come. It provides us with our first glimpse of the harder-edged Giles lurking behind the tweed and library books. It sets-up the recurring joke that Halloween is an embarrassment to the truly evil, with Spike growing more and more disgusted with it's commericalization as the years go on. This episode will also be cited repeated throughout the rest of the series. For example, Xander's Army-guy training will be discussed right into season seven. "Halloween" is one of the episodes that you really shouldn't skip. It's a classic episode that shows BTVS at it's comedic best.

The episode revolved around Halloween in Sunnydale, where everyone is suddenly transformed into whatever they're dressed as. It begins with, Xander, Buffy and Willow being "volunteered" by Snyder to take neighborhood children trick-or-treating. Having seen Cordy flirting with Angel, Buffy is determined to "wow" him with her costume. She dresses up like an 18th Century lady, convinced that he'll be more attracted to her if she looks like the women from his youth. Xander, meanwhile, dresses up like a soldier and Willow hides the revealing outfit that Buffy made her wear under a white, sheet-like, ghost costume. It should be a fairly simple evening, but being Sunnydale, things soon go wrong. Unfortunately for the Scoobie's, Giles' nemesis Ethan Rayne is in town and he's cooking up a spell to turn everyone into their Halloween costumes. Soon Xander is shooting a machine gun, Buffy is fainting and simpering in the face of danger and Willow is walking through walls. Meanwhile, Spike arrives to take advantage of the situation and starts recruiting the newly transformed children/monsters into a slayer hunting party. It's up to Giles to stop Ethan before Buffy and the rest of the town is destroyed.

There's a lot to like about this episode. I think Angel, Buffy and Cordy's scene at the beginning of the episode is cute. I pretty sure that's the first time we see Angel laugh. And who can resist Spike and Dru? I just adore watching them together. Video taping Buffy so he can study her weaknesses is just so.... Spike. Unlike Angel he gleefully adapts to technology and uses all situations to his own advantage. I also love the scene where Willow, Xander, Cordy and Buffy are hiding at Buffy's house. Buffy and Xander's memory loss is hilarious, especially when Angel arrives. Spike's right, the whole episode is just... "neat."

On the downside, and I'm nitpicking here, but how that vampire just walked into Buffy's kitchen? He should have needed an invitation, even if he was just an ordinary person transformed into a vampire, right? The spell made everyone turn into their costumes, so technically he would be a vampire now and have to follow the "you need to invite them in" rule. Also, I can't believe how easily Spike captured Angel and the Scoobies. Good grief, he didn't even have to break a sweat! Angel's a better fighter than that. Also I'm not convinced that Angel ever knew any noble women in his human life. He was the wastrel son of an Irish merchant. His family, much to young Angel's dismay, only had one servant. I think it's sweet when he talks to Buffy at the end of the episode, reassuring her that she's far more interesting than any of the noble women he once knew. But, I don't think he's being entirely accurate.

My favorite part of the episode: Buffy's reaction to seeing a car for the first time, "It's a demon!" This is the exact same response Angel will have when he looses his memory and sees LA traffic speeding by in the "Angel" episode "Spin the Bottle."

Must see Buffy
stephbull-6707525 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I first watched BtVS when I was teenager & still have Buffy marathons, this episode is of a select few I would recommend to watch. Why? How about this - Spike gets his lackeys to film Buffy for any weaknesses, Cordelia flirts with Angel with no success, Xander almost getting pummeled by Larry, Buffy & Willow dodging Giles to get Angel facts, Buffy wanting to be a maiden, Cordelia not believing Angel is a vampire, Ethan Rayne enters, Buffy' s a maiden, Xander's a solder, & Willow's a ht chick in a ghost costume, suddenly all the cute little monsters turn into real demons, Ghost Willow dies = chick, Xander becomes a 100% fully fledged soldier, & Buffy becomes a damsel in distress, Buffy even thinks car is a demon, a photo makes them wonder, Cordelia hasn't changed-wtf, Willow can go through things, Angel arrives & no one knows who he is, Giles works out the "transformers" got their costumes from Ethan's, =Buffy in BIG trouble, Ethan refers to Giles as Ripper, "You get to live" is one of Giles replies, "they" fight, but Giles saves the day, with Buffy finishing off!!! Watch it!!!

Utterly fantastic

Warning: Spoilers
Halloween

The Good; Pretty much everything, great ep, love the alternate Scoobies, the Xena ref, the first appearance of Ethan and Ripper, the fight in the pumpkin stall at the beginning, Dru and Spike back, Oz, Larry, Cordy in her pussycat costume, Willow getting 'Sexy and Wild' (love her strutting at the end, do you think she got any offers?) the list goes on. Buffy unknowingly impersonating Darla and fainting (but at least she doesn't get tied up) and clinging onto Cordy's arm

The Bad; Open to suggestions?

Best line; Hard to pick but I'd say; Willow "She couldn't have gone as Xena? Just pipping Giles' "The ghost of what exactly?" upon seeing Will's streetwalker outfit and "You went mental when?" from Cordy

Questions and observations: Willow appears to be a Xena fan. Hmmmmm? Callings Captain Subtext! Of course Xena started a couple of years before Buff and without it I don't think we'd have had Buffy. In one ep they refer to the play 'Buffus the Bachae Slayer'. You could say that Spike's fascination with Buffy is evident in his watching the video of her fighting. Love Willow walking through the wall and people's reaction to it. The long tracking shot of Xander transforming into Rambo. Where are Joyce and Dawn during all of this? Either he reloads offscreen or Xander's rifle has a limitless magazine. Another hint of attraction between Cordy and soldier Xander. Angel wears a blue shirt which is OK but not really him. The Summers house get's trashed for the first time. How does the vamp Angel fights in the kitchen get in without being invited? First appearance of SDH's famous soda machine. Buffy get's sexually assaulted AGAIN, mauled by Pirate Larry (who really musn't be himself considering what we learn later). We discover that Cordy doesn't know Angel is a vamp. Xander tells Cordy she'll never get between Buffy and Angel, well almost. Giles tortures Ethan for info, the Scoobies really seem to have a knack for it. Reputedly Joss fired the writer of this ep afterwards, don't know why he did a good job? (and goes on to write for Xena)

10/10 afters a couple of false starts season 2 firing on all cylinders

The One Where Everyone Turns Into Their Costumes...
taylorkingston28 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I love this episode and it is one of my all time favorite Buffy The Vampire Slayer episodes. I love it so much. The idea is just so interesting and creative. Who thought of everyone turning into their Halloween costumes? It's just so good.

In this episode, it's Halloween in Sunnydale and everyone is pretty excited. Expect for Xander, Buffy and Willow who are being forced into doing the high school Halloween thing. I don't know what to actually call it. They have to take little kids trick-or-treating. Which is really unfair. Why should they have to spend their free time doing this kind of stuff when they haven't signed up for it. Principle Snyder has no right to make them do this. Anyway, enough of my rant. Everyone has chosen their costumes. Xander is going as an army soldier. Buffy is going as a 18th Century girl, to impress Angel. Willow was going to go as a sexy girl, but got too nervous and is going as a ghost. And Cordelia is going as a cat. Whilst out trick-or-treating, Ethan Rayne performs a spell that turns everyone into their costumes. Buffy doesn't remember anything about her life, and is confused by all of the current technology, like cars. Xander doesn't remember anything about his life and becomes a real army soldier with a real gun. And Willow turns into a real see-through ghost. She can even walk through walls. Since she is the only one who remembers her real life, she goes to get help from Giles. Spike thinks this is the perfect opportunity to kill Buffy, since she doesn't remember vampires or any of her fighting skills. One more thing is strange though, Cordelia didn't turn into a real cat. We find out that this is because she got her costume at a different store than everyone else. Everyone who has changed got their costumes from Ethan Rayne's store. Willow and Giles find Ethan and force him to reverse the spell. And just when Spike was about to kill Buffy, real Buffy comes back and beats the crap out of him.

Overall, I give this episode a 10 out of 10.

Awesome Episode
kellyq121 June 2022
This is a great episode as a standalone episode and as a serial episode with progressing the season's storylines. Everyone (almost everyone) turns into their costumes and it's both hilarious and makes for good, unique suspense/action. Probably very fun for some of the actors to get to play against type. And Spike is a big part of the episode too. 10/10.

strong in both fantasy elements and character elements
nysmbs20 December 2022
Aside from Buffy's weird tendency to see competition in every woman Angel breathes in the vicinity of, it's a very fun episode, strong in both emotional stakes and breezy action.

The fantasy element is stronger than in early episodes of season 2, arguably it's the strongest we've seen it all season at this point. A costume store that makes people turn into their halloween costumes? Hell yes. Giles coming face to face with someone from his past and showing a new power level out of desperation? Hell yes. Willow becoming a literal ghost? Hell to the yes!

But we don't just want to watch anyone go through this, and the cast all give us strong reasons to care about their plights in this episode. Buffy's transformation into a brainless medieval woman is a fairly satisfying exercise in be-careful-what-you-wish-for.

But the real reason I love this episode is it finally gives Willow the moment she deserves. She is a beautiful, brave, smart, and funny young woman who up until this point had spent a season and a half unfairly being the butt of others' jokes. Here she is shining, leading essentially all of the heroes' actions and coming out of her shell with full confidence. Here's to hoping it's a sign of things to come.

Will all hell break loose on Halloween?
gizmomogwai26 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I've been reviewing Halloween and horror-themed movies and TV throughout this October. For a show like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, every week is Halloween. Vampires, demons, ghosts and witches come all year round. But this episode is actually set on Halloween- how do you make it special? This episode comes close to being a stand-out but just falls short.

This episode introduces Ethan Rayne who becomes a recurring villain. He sells costumes to the people of Sunnydale, then casts a spell that makes everyone transform into what they were dressed as. Buffy becomes an eighteenth century noblewoman, Xander becomes a soldier, and Willow becomes a ghost. Spike tries to take advantage of one of Buffy's rare states of helplessness.

This episode isn't a favourite of mine. Maybe that's because I don't think we saw the full potential of the chaos that could have erupted in this scenario. They may have felt restrained in that, for example, Xander couldn't be shooting all these little demons, because then he would be shooting innocent kids. Buffy, meanwhile, is no longer a hero. When the spell is broken, it's good to have the old Buffy back, and to see her bash Spike good again. And what is Willow's sexy costume supposed to be? Giles is baffled by it too. The best part of the episode is where Giles confronts Ethan, and Ethan mentions Giles' dark past. A dark side to Giles is, at this point, unknown and intriguing, soon to be explored in The Dark Age, an episode I prefer to this one.

Happy Halloween.

Halloween isn't a quiet as predicted
Tweekums13 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Early on it is stated that Halloween is actually a rather quiet time for the supernatural… of course this year will be an exception. Buffy, Willow and Xander have been volunteered by Principal Snyder to supervise young children as they trick or treat… costumes are not optional. They all head to a new costume shop and pick out something to wear; Buffy is particularly keen on an eighteenth century style dress that she is sure Angel will like. Xander decides to go as a soldier and Willow originally wears a rather sexy costume but ultimately chickens out and wears a ghost costume over it. What they don't realise is that Ethan Rayne, the shopkeeper, is going to perform a ritual and then everybody wearing anything bought at his shop will become the thing they are dressed as! Spike hears what is going on and quickly it is chaos in Sunnydale. Most people seem to have no idea who they really are; Willow becomes a ghost of herself, in the sexy costume, so can remember as well as now being able to walk through walls. Cordelia is unaffected as well as she brought her costume elsewhere. It later emerges that Giles and Ethan knew each other in the past as he struggles to break the spell before a helpless Buffy can be killed by the vampires.

This was a great episode for many reasons; we have Buffy and Willow trying to find out about Angel, Cordelia's reaction to being told that Angel is a vampire, hints that Giles had a rather dark past and Oz noticing Willow again… although it is hardly surprising what she was wearing at the time. Willow has always been such a quiet character so it was fun seeing her growing more confident at the end of the episode as she doesn't bother keeping her ghost costume on and goes with the sexy costume she wore when she really was a ghost; a costume that made her look stunning without quite being indecent. It was great to see Spike and Drusilla again even if Ethan is the main villain. It was interesting to see Buffy being the most vulnerable character when thinks went wrong… mostly because it made her return to normal all the more awesome. Overall a memorable episodes for all the right reasons.

The best of Buffy's Halloween episodes
ossie859 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Halloween approaches Sunnydale and the gang are recruited to take kids out trick-or-treating. Buffy, Willow and Xander then go to a magic shop and by costumes. But the head of the magic shop casts a spell on all the costumes and they become their costumes. Xander is soldier, Willow is a ghost and Buffy is a 18th century noble woman and is now helpless. Spike finds out about Buffy and goes after her.

Why It's So Good - Be careful what you wish for is a time honoured fantasy trope, but Buffy doesn't disappoint. Taking our characters out of their comfort zones with some great results. Willow learns confidence, while Buffy realises that Angel likes her for her.

Watch Out For - Spike having some fun.

Quote - "Okay, on sleazing extra candy: tears are key. Tears will normally get you the double-bagger. You can also try the old 'you missed me' routine, but it's risky. Only go there for chocolate. Understood?" - Xander giving advice on trick or treating.

About the vampire-in-the-kitchen
cylon-productions22 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This is not as much a review as it is a theory.

Many haven complaint/noticed that halfway through this episode a vampire enters the Summers' residence without being invited.

I have two theories that might explain this: say he was a guy dressed as a vampire, and he was at some point in Buffy's life invited to her house (to study for instance) Then now, he would be able to enter the house, since he had been invited at some point.

The other theory is less logical, but it's a nice thought: It's widely know that, in the series at least, when a person dies, or does not live in a house anymore, vampires can enter the house without having to follow the invite-rule.

Now, what if Joyce left the house for Halloween, dressed in some kind of costume, then she would have turned into the costume. This would make her someone else, and therefor, the house would belong to nobody, and the vampire would be able to enter.

That's the two theories I came up with.

About the Episode: I like this episode, it's very funny. The first time I saw it, I completely loved it, but it doesn't hold up after a few screenings. Now, I still think it's a good episode, but it could have been more...

Mannequin in Halloween shop.
yanniutah2 December 2021
Why has the female mannequin in the Halloween shop got n1pples painted on its b00bs? The TV version shows a lot more than the online version.

I'm no prude and this is no complaint, just found it quite amusing.

Willow's costume
nfayers19862 April 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Just watching this episode, and have read reviews about it. The mystery of who Willow is dressed as I think is solved easily if you know your 90s TV shows (I had little to do in the 90s). There's even a clue in something Willow says.

My best guess would be she's dressed as Gabrielle from Xena: The Warrior Princess, one of my favourite heroines from the past few decades..

On a side note, this episode is not my favourite episode, but there are a lot worse around. Buffy'The storyline, whilst not overly critical to the series was the first hint that Giles had some sort of secret life beyond his books.

Drusilla: Do you love my insides? The parts you can't see? Spike: Eyeballs to entrails, my sweet.
bombersflyup28 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Halloween is about a shop owner casting a spell, having the customers become the costumes they're wearing.

An okay episode, some of it tame and lame and lacking fun. She wants Angel to meet her for coffee, he's there and she shows up and leaves, bit fickle. I don't like this Ethan character. Why's he casting this spell, he's not even involved. He's just evil is he, because that's not good enough. He needs to have his own reasons other than just linking him to Giles, so Giles's past can be explored.

Think of Goosebumps The Haunted Mask meets Hocus Pocus

Warning: Spoilers
This episode of Buffy sees the slayer and her friends transform into the costumes that they become thanks to a mysterious man who owns a costume shop. Overall I thought it was an enjoyable episode and it was nice seeing Buffy acting as a 19th century baroness from a fish out of water.

Pushing the Limits of Imagination and Story Progression
Aegelis29 March 2024
Excellent episode from both a creativity standpoint and a series development standpoint. Full chaos erupts on a night which was supposed to be quiet while the typical roles of the main characters are turned on their heads. Well-planned and executed plot, plenty of inventive action, and our main vampire foes come out to play. Even children are to be feared here, but also need protection at the same time. Dilemmas abound, I can also see how much fun the actors must've had with this show in particular. Great directing and acting, per usual, all the qualities of a top-notch movie, let alone a TV series.

Become something your not
Realrockerhalloween30 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Halloween is a great episode where Ethan Rayne turns the citizens of Sunnydale into their costumes. Giles reveals he once knew him from his ripper days when he was involved in black magic. It was interesting to see Sunnydale in echoes more then usual as creatures roam the street, destroying property and terrorizing the citizens. Buffy becoming an 16th century high class girl isn't around to stop the carnage giving us a glance at what life may be like if she never became the slayer and remained the vain girl she once was. Also up to this point we never saw Giles as more then an uptight librarian yet we're reminded he was young once and he has a darker side to his personality then we realized which may account for him being laxed with his charge unlike other watchers.

Also the episode is full of tension as Spike takes advance of the situation to hunt down Buffy to kill her while Giles hints for the power source involved in creating this Halloween havoc. Which will be the first to succeed is a count down to the last minute as Spike leans in to bite her as Giles smashes the statue.
