Doesn't Make Sense
sjkriz5 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I just realize when the black smoke was chasing Kate and Juliet, Juliet activated the fence and the smoke couldn't get them because of it... Why didn't think smoke just go up and over the fence like Kate, John, and Sayid???

That doesn't make much sense!

Girlfight!

Warning: Spoilers
The problem with the previous Season 3 episode focusing on Kate - "I Do" - was that the flashback was largely pointless. It looked as if the writers had come to kind of a dead end with her "fugitive on the run" story. "Left Behind" improves somewhat on that point by having Kate encounter a character from Sawyer's past - thus creating a new connection between them - and also confronting her mother about calling the cops on her. The present on-island action finds Kate and Juliet Left Behind and handcuffed to each other, and their scenes together are fairly tense. But the most satisfying part of this episode is probably the beach camp subplot, with Hurley tricking Sawyer into playing nice for everyone. It's not really a bad episode, but following right after something as innovative and atypical as "Exposé", it is definitely a comedown. *** out of 4.

Left Behind

When 'Lost' was in its prime, it was must-watch television. Remember first watching it, found it remarkably easy to get into, was hooked from the start and was on Season 3 by the end of one week. The general consensus is that the final season is a disappointment and cannot disagree.

"Left Behind" is not one of the best episodes of 'Lost'. It's not even one of the best episodes of Season 3. It's still a pretty good episode however and is nowhere near one of the show's worst, as far as the previous episodes go it is significantly better than "Fire + Water" and especially "Stranger in a Strange Land" (a 'Lost' low-point), also found it better than "Expose" (serving more of a point to the island events and not feeling as much of a filler episode) while appreciating what that episode tried to do.

It is let down by the flashback. Did not find the flashback scenes that illuminating, saying not much particularly interesting to Kate despite being something of a revelatory moment for both her and Cassidy, and found that it didn't serve much point to the rest of the episode.

There is quite a wide divide in the quality of the writing in these scenes to the island events, the latter being much tauter while the former was not as focused. "Left Behind" is another reminder of how Kim Dickens's acting has come on a long way since 'Lost'.

However, the island events are extremely compelling and tautly written. There is a good deal of tension with Kate and Juliet and the lighter subplot with Hurley and Sawyer brought a lot of welcome levity and amusement without jarring. There is plot advancing and forward momentum, something that wasn't apparent in "Expose". The monster though is a little bit disappointing, being for my tastes not quite sinister enough.

Acting is fine apart from Dickens. Elizabeth Mitchell, Jorge Garcia and Josh Holloway faring best while Evangelline Lily is credible.

Visually, "Left Behind" is stylish and atmospheric, the direction is controlled and the music chilling and understated.

Overall, pretty good though there's better in the season. 7/10 Bethany Cox

Watching Each Girl's Back

Juliet is left behind by The Others cuffed to Kate in the woods, and Locke joins them and the group leaves the village to another unknown location. Kate recalls her trip to Iowa, when she saves Cassie from the police and in retribution she helps Kate to meet her mother. Later she reveals to Kate that she is pregnant, but Cassie never tells the name of Sawyer to Kate. Juliet and Kate escape from the black smoke monster and returns to the empty village to meet Jack and Sayid. Meanwhile, Hurley deceives Sawyer, telling him that the survivors would vote to banish him from the camp, and Sawyer changes his selfish behavior, being nice, gentle and cooperative with the group hoping to stay with them.

"Left Behind" is another excellent episode of "Lost", centered in the past of Kate. Her dramatic relationship with her mother entwined with the personal drama of Cassie, left by Sawyer without her savings and pregnant, is one of the best flashbacks of this show. Sawyer changing his behavior is the funny part and the return of the weird black smoke monster is intriguing. Further, why Locke joined The Others? I would never trust in the treacherous Juliet, who inclusive had the key of the cuffs, but it seems that Jack has been seduced by the beautiful woman. My vote is ten.

Title (Brazil): Not Available

Note: On 10 April 2013, I saw this episode again on DVD.

This is a more or less solid episode, one of few post-Hydra pod season 3 episodes ("Stranger in a Strange Land" and "Par Avion" being the others, although the latter is a good episode overall) that aren't at least 'very good'. The flashbacks with Cassidy and Kate are pretty awful and pointless, but the on-island stuff is generally rather good, I disagree with those who don't like the monster in this episode. Plus, there's nice guy Sawyer and Kate and Juliet in a lot of mud. Really not all that much to talk about here, it's a good TV episode overall, somewhat disappointing for "Lost" especially given the momentum the show was gaining at this point. Not much to talk about here but still a fun 42 minutes overall, really not as bad as some make it out to be, even though it is awkwardly-placed within the season and a bit frustrating on re-watches.
