"I myself am strange and unusual," Winona Ryder's goth teen Lydia Deetz proclaims in "Beetlejuice," although she could've just as easily been talking about the movie around her. Tim Burton's supernatural comedy was lightning in a bottle when it landed in 1988, a zealously idiosyncratic (and horny!) affair and a welcome remedy to the decade's consumerist mentality. Now, 36 years later (*wipes brow*), a "Beetlejuice" sequel is finally making its way to the big screen at a time when franchises and IPs may be loosening their grip just a little on the media landscape. The question is, will "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" -- as the film is now officially titled -- be part of the problem or will it mark the start of a long, long-awaited creative renaissance for Burton the director?
If you're looking for reasons to be skeptical about "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," one need only point to Burton's filmography since "Big Fish...

The oldest post I could find for "Beetlejuice 2" in the /Film archives is from 2011, but director Tim Burton and Warner Bros. have been wanting to make a follow-up to the 1988 original for literal decades. As early as 1990, Burton was developing "Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian," which would have seen the Deetz family moving to the island state and Michael Keaton's Beetlejuice eventually winning a surfing contest. That version obviously never happened, but ideas for a sequel have been bouncing around Hollywood ever since, and the project has gone through tons of stops and starts and false positives on its way to finally receiving a confirmed theatrical release date of September 6, 2024.
A rocky development alone is not enough of a reason to doubt this movie's quality; plenty of films have been delayed for years and ended up being masterpieces. (Just look at "Mad Max: Fury Road.") But there are a couple...

At the time of its 1978 release, "Superman" was one of the most expensive films ever made, boasting a $55 million budget. To tell the story of the famous Man of Steel — an out-of-this-world superhero of immense strength that stood for American values — director Richard Donner's film had to be larger-than-life. The colors were vivid, the airborne special effects were (at the time) groundbreaking, and it had an outstanding cast that truly brought these beloved comic book characters to life and treated them as dynamic individuals.
Christopher Reeve, especially, gives a spectacular performance in the lead role. What he does best is clearly mark the differences and tension between his naive, dweeby alter ego Clark Kent and the formidable Superman. You can literally see and hear the changes in his persona through the way he carries himself and uses his voice. Margot Kidder is his perfect romantic foil as the spunky Lois Lane,...

Andy Muschietti's recent superhero flick "The Flash" hoped to lure in audiences with a sprawling story that spans several parallel universes. It was the same approach taken by John Watts in "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and Sam Raimi in "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," in that all three films assembled multiple versions of certain superhero characters culled from various extant movie franchises. "The Flash" contains the Ben Affleck version of Batman as he appeared in Zack Snyder's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," as well as the Michael Keaton version of Batman as he appeared in Tim Burton's 1989 film called merely "Batman." The Flash, he finds, can run so fast that he can travel into alternate timelines.
In the film's climactic final scenes, the Flash -- having time-traveled too much -- unwittingly causes the fabric of reality to rip, allowing cameo appearances from a dozen...

“American Crime Story” writer/producer Scott Alexander remembers the WGA strikes of 1988 and 2007 and told TheWrap that this time there’s “a sense of righteousness” as writers and actors hold out for issues like higher residuals from streaming.
“There’s a positive attitude this time and a sense of righteousness. And a sense that there’s something bigger happening here in society that wasn’t there in the previous strikes,”Alexander told TheWrap on Monday while picketing at CBS Television City in Los Angeles.
“There’s a sense of just completely not being able to back down on this one. And it’s very clear-cut. In ’88, it wasn’t really clear what we were striking for… This time, everyone knows what they’re fighting for. They’re fighting [to end] s—ty practices and streaming, and mini-rooms, and short orders and non-existent residuals,” he added.

Lucy Liu (Strange World, Shazam! Fury of the Gods) and Cooper Hoffman (Licorice Pizza) have joined two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz (No Time to Die, Big Eyes, Inglourious Basterds) in Old Guy, the upcoming action comedy from Simon West (The Expendables 2, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider).
West directs and produces the feature, which was written by Greg Johnson (The Son) and recently wrapped in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where it was filmed on location, with support from Northern Ireland Screen. Highland Film Group is co-financing the action comedy and handling worldwide rights.
Old Guy follows aging contract killer Danny Dolinski (Waltz), who still believes he’s the best at what he does. Stuck at a dead end but vying for the love of club manager Anata (Liu), Danny is thrilled when The Company pulls him back into the field, but only to train Gen Z newcomer Wihlborg (Hoffman), a prodigy assassin with an attitude.

Carl Nargle (Owen Wilson), the amusingly ironic hero of “Paint”, hosts a one-man instructional painting show that gets broadcast live out of the PBS station in Burlington, Vermont. Each afternoon, Carl appears on camera for one hour, puffing on his pipe, holding his brushes and palette as he dashes off an oil painting of a local wilderness setting, explaining all the while, in the unruffled monotone of a stoned hypnotist, how you too can get to a “special place” just by painting what’s in your heart.
Carl himself seems nearly as much of an art object as his canvases of Mt. Mansfield, the Vermont peak he has begun to paint with Ocd frequency. He wears the same denim Western shirts, fuzzy beard and ash-blond Afro that he’s been sporting since 1979. Tim Burton is one of the greatest directors of our era. A former animator for Disney, his early shorts, Vincent and Frankenweenie, marked him as one of the most promising up-and-comers in the business. His first film, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, helped turn Paul Reubens’ Pee-Wee Herman into a household name. It would mark his first collaboration with composer Danny Elfman, who would remain one of his most frequent collaborators. His next film, Beetlejuice, was an even bigger hit, but when Burton was chosen to direct Batman and picked the star of Beetlejuice, Michael Keaton, to be his Caped Crusader, people were wary. However, the resulting film became one of the biggest hits of the eighties and changed the superhero film forever, with many still counting Keaton as the definitive Batman.

Long before she bagged back-to-back Best TV Drama Actress Golden Globes for “Homeland” in 2012 and 2013, Claire Danes initially conquered the same category as the 15-year-old star of “My So-Called Life.” Nearly three decades later, she still holds the Golden Globe record for youngest TV acting champ, with 1974 Best Film Supporting Actress recipient Linda Blair being the only younger acting winner overall. Although her TV record is almost guaranteed to remain intact by the end of this season, there may be a second place shake-up depending on whether voters warm to 20-year-old “Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega.
Presently, Ortega ranks sixth in Gold Derby’s Best TV Comedy Actress Golden Globe predictions, behind such formidable opponents as Jean Smart (“Hacks”) and Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”). (Welcome to ...And More, our no-frills, zero B.S. guide to when and where you can watch upcoming movies and shows, and everything else you could possibly stand to know.)
An "Addams Family" project directed by Tim Burton feels like such an obvious thing, the only thing more mysterious and spooky than the Addamses themselves is the fact it hasn't already been made. There was even a point where it seemed doomed to never happen after a planned stop-motion "Addams Family" movie potentially helmed by Burton was canceled in the early 2010s.
Then came the rise of streaming and, before anyone knew it, Burton had signed on to helm Netflix's "Wednesday," a live-action series about the titular Addams daughter famously played by Christina Ricci in the two theatrical "Addams Family" films directed by Barry Sonnenfeld in the 1990s. Could this be a long-awaited return to darkly impertinent form for Burton?...

There’s a genre I like so much I can never get enough of it — I call it the Biopic About Someone You Wouldn’t Make a Biopic About. The form came into existence, in a certain way, with “Sid and Nancy,” but it was all but patented by the screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who planted it on the map, in 1994, with “Ed Wood” (still the “Citizen Kane” of the genre), then went on to script “The People vs. Larry Flynt,” “Man on the Moon” (about Andy Kaufman), “Big Eyes”, and “Dolemite Is My Name” (about the fluky hustler-comedian Ray Moore). There have been films in the genre from other quarters, like Paul Schrader’s superb “Auto Focus” (about the TV star Bob Crane and his video-fetish sex life), going right up through the recent Toronto Film Festival sensation “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.”

Margaret Keane, who went to court to prove that her popular paintings of children with large, sad eyes were indeed hers and not her husband’s, a tale that was told in the Tim Burton film Big Eyes, has died. She was 94.
Keane died Sunday of heart failure at her home in Napa, California, her daughter, Jane Swigert, told The New York Times.
Amy Adams portrayed Margaret Keane in Big Eyes (2014) alongside Christoph Waltz as her realtor husband, Walter Keane.
For years starting in the 1950s, Walter Keane persuaded his wife to paint for up to 16 hours a day while promoting her work as his own. Stars including Jerry Lewis, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Liberace commissioned Keane portraits, and Joan Crawford used one of her for the cover of her 1962 autobiography.

Margaret Keane, the artist whose paintings of wide-eyed children inspired the 2014 Tim Burton film “Big Eyes,” died Sunday at her home in Napa, California. She was 94.
Her daughter told The New York Times reported that she died of heart failure.
In “Big Eyes,” Amy Adams played Keane in her protracted fight with her second husband over credit for her life’s work. Though Walter Keane masterfully promoted his wife’s sad, saucer-eyed waifs, it would be revealed years later that his claims to have painted them himself were entirely fraudulent.
In reality, Margaret Keane toiled in the basement for several hours a day while her husband claimed credit during his ambitious promotional efforts, including everything from Hollywood hobnobbing to TV appearances. All the while, the paintings stirred controversy and scorn in the art world as they gained widespread popularity.

Margaret Keane, whose wildly popular paintings of big-eyed, melancholy children (and later celebrities with deep pockets) became one of the most widely recognized signature artistic styles of the late 20th Century – and whose long battle with her husband over his fraudulent and lucrative claims of authorship inspired the 2014 Tim Burton film Big Eyes starring Amy Adams – died Sunday at home in Napa, California. She was 94.
Her death was reported on her official Facebook page today: “We’re sad to announce that Margaret Keane, ‘The Mother of Big Eyes, our Queen, a Modern Master and Legend’ peacefully passed away Sunday morning at her home in Napa, CA, she was 94.”
Her daughter Jane Swigert told The New York Times that the cause of death was heart failure.

“Ozark” fans, rejoice. The Jason Bateman and Julia Garner-starring drama series is returning to Netflix in April with a second part to its fourth season — and it’s just one of many other hotly anticipated titles coming to the streamer this month.
April will also see the long-awaited sophomore installment to “Russian Doll,” the mind-bending “Groundhog Day”-esque dramedy series starring Natasha Lyonne as a hard-partying New York City woman stuck in a brain-melting circuitous loop from hell.
For fans of capital-m mess, there’s the Spanish-language “Elite,” which traces the scandalous (and often murderous) exploits of the posh attendees of high school Las Encinas. Or, if you prefer your glamorous mess via reality series, “Selling Sunset” — about the lux real estate market in Los Angeles — is premiering its fifth season April 22.

Louis Wain painted cats, hundreds if not thousands of cats. He painted the critters with big googly eyes, gathered round the dinner table, serving tea or slurping at straws. He painted them standing on their hind legs, holding golf clubs and swinging Ping-Pong paddles, and he painted them seated, driving cars and smoking cigars.
Premiering at the Telluride Film Festival (whose programmers find oddball biopics impossible to resist), the eccentric yet enjoyable “The Electrical Life of Louis Wain” suggests that were it not for the prolific artist’s anthropomorphic paintings, English households might not have been quite so keen to embrace the independent-minded animal as a domestic pet. Personally, I’m skeptical that Wain was the cause — and besides, everyone knows cats can’t be tamed — although his influence can clearly be felt in the comic strips and cartoons that came after.

Mubi's retrospective Uri Zohar Trilogy is showing July - October, 2020 in France.Above: Three Days and a ChildA charismatic actor and director, popular television star and icon of bohemian Tel Aviv, Uri Zohar set off shock waves in Israel’s secular society when he decided to become a practicing, observant Jew. Since that time, in the late 1970s, he has become an ultra-Orthodox rabbi and has denied his cinematic past, describing it as a dark period in his life.Yet his works have a life of their own. Many of the movies he directed, starting in the mid-’60s—some of which have become part of the canon of Israeli cinema—reveal extraordinary talent, inspiration and sensitivity, and they function as a tragicomic, pitiless and sometimes disillusioned mirror of Israeli society of that era. Born in 1935, Zohar was the main figure of the New Sensibility, this Israeli cinema movement...

This year, the motion picture academy achieved its five-year goal of doubling the number of women among its membership. In all, 819 film professionals were invited to become part of the organization that hands out the Oscars. Compare this intake to the totals of the previous five years: 842 in 2019; a record 928 in 2018; 774 in 2017; 683 in 2016; 322 in 2015; and 271 in 2014.
While Academy Awards nominees are automatically eligible for consideration, the rest of the candidates must go through a fairly cumbersome process. A candidate must meet certain branch specific requirements before even being eligible.
For example, actors must “have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a caliber that reflect the high standards of the Academy.” For writers, directors and producers they need have just two of these credits.

In 2016, as part of its A2020 initiative, the Academy promised to at least double the number of women and underrepresented ethnic/racial communities by this year. “Through dedicated and intentional work by the Board of Governors and members on the branch executive committees, the Academy has surpassed both these goals,...

With readers turning to their home viewing options more than ever, this daily feature provides one new movie each day worth checking out on a major streaming platform.
Among the American filmmakers who came to prominence in the ‘90s, few have experienced the level of diminished returns that has afflicted Tim Burton’s career. Over the past decade, the erstwhile gothic maestro has delivered one disappointment after another, driven in part by the 2010 blockbuster sensation “Alice in Wonderland.” The movie delivered massive box office dollars around the planet, but reduced Burton’s kooky energy to formula readymade to rejuvenate dormant IP, setting unreasonable expectations that did him no favors, and culminated in last year’s dud “Dumbo.” While 2012’s “Frankenweenie” provided a charming callback to the zany aesthetic that put Burton on the map, it hardly achieved more than that.
To truly appreciate Burton at his best, you have to go back 15 years.

The Golden Globes are always good for a surprise. Aaron Taylor Johnson winning best supporting actor for Nocturnal Animals (2016). Amy Adams winning for Big Eyes (2014) when everyone expected Emily Blunt to win because she was in a musical; Into the Woods (2014). Just last year Glenn Close winning over Lady Gaga changed the best actress race.
But perhaps the biggest and happiest surprise was Isabelle Huppert winning best actress in a drama for Elle (2016). That year everyone thought the competition was between Emma Stone for La La Land and Natalie Portman in Jackie. And there they were in separate categories at the Globes and were each expected to win...

Exclusive: The Craig Brewer-directed Dolemite Is My Name stars Eddie Murphy as Rudy Ray Moore, the unsung filmmaking hero who would eventually help define the Blaxploitation era of cinema.
Written by Scott Alexander & Larry Karaszewski, Dolemite is essentially a story about the American Dream and a sense of community for those in the margins in Hollywood. Moore was a comedian who had more failures than successes until he assumed the persona of Dolemite. Many saw the alter ego as crude, and his blatantly explicit album covers and songs were too racy for radio, so they began selling bootlegs of his albums.
Wanting to elevate and expand the character, Moore went to socially minded playwright Jerry Jones (played in the film by Keegan-Michael Key) to make a film, helped by his new comedic partner in crime Lady Reed (Da’Vine Joy Randolph...

Although many biopics are formulaic enterprises, hitting familiar beats as the subject rises and falls and falls in love and writes that really popular song, they’re a vital element of entertainment industry. Biopics allow filmmakers to humanize our myths, mythologize our contemporaries, re-evaluate history at a fundamentally human level, and catalogue our present so that future generations can understand what the hell we are going through. It’s been an entire decade full of great biopics, too many to fit in a conventional list, but when all is said and done, we have to call these the ten absolutely essential films in the genre from the 2010s.
Runners-Up: “127 Hours,” “Behind the Candelabra,” “A Dangerous Method,” “Dolemite is My Name,” “Jackie,” “Mr. Turner,” “Rocketman,” “Southside With You,” “Straight Outta Compton,” “The Wind Rises”
10. “Stan & Ollie” (2018)
