As part of a new series, one of our writers finally catches up with the cinematic classic they’ve somehow missed. Today, Stuart Jeffries watches Fritz Lang’s pioneering sci-fi epic
It’s Freddie Mercury’s fault. When he and his lavishly coiffed backing band released Radio Gaga in 1984, the video used footage from the 1927 German expressionist film, Metropolis. Superimposed over Fritz Lang’s visionary cityscape were the foursome in a flying car. Later in the video, they performed a gig before the film’s downtrodden masses. Not many cinematic classics could survive such brutal repurposing. For me, Lang’s film got tainted by association with Queen’s song – one that, ironically enough, became part of the very radio blah it ostensibly indicted.
I’ve always loved the films noirs the German emigré made in Hollywood after the war: The Blue Gardenia, While the City Sleeps, Beyond a Reasonable Doubt.

In Belgian writer-director Samuel Tilman’s compelling feature debut, a seemingly innocent man finds his life upended when he’s accused of committing murder. It’s a plot we’ve seen a few billion times before, most memorably in classics by Fritz Lang (Beyond a Reasonable Doubt) and Alfred Hitchcock (The Wrong Man, I Confess) where being blamed for a crime can be just as bad as having done the deed itself.
Indeed, The Benefit of the Doubt (Une part d’ombre) tips its hat to those masters both in terms of its (rather generic) title, as well as in a scenario ...

The love for Fritz Lang doesn’t quit! As Lang’s biographers point out, his American films consistently focus on moral and psychological questions in crime. Lang saw murder as more than a dramatic tool as he probed for weaknesses in the legal system. His final American pictures — two separate disc releases — make excellent use of good actors. Dana Andrews stars in both, backed by name stars set loose from the studio system.

The amazingly creative Fritz Lang almost singlehandedly pioneered a number of key genres: the fantasy epic, the gangster film, the spy thriller, and the science fiction film — all before the start of the sound era.

Dana Andrews movies: Film noir actor excelled in both major and minor crime dramas. Dana Andrews movies: First-rate film noir actor excelled in both classics & minor fare One of the best-looking and most underrated actors of the studio era, Dana Andrews was a first-rate film noir/crime thriller star. Oftentimes dismissed as no more than a “dependable” or “reliable” leading man, in truth Andrews brought to life complex characters that never quite fit into the mold of Hollywood's standardized heroes – or rather, antiheroes. Unlike the cynical, tough-talking, and (albeit at times self-delusionally) self-confident characters played by the likes of Alan Ladd, Edward G. Robinson, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, and, however lazily, Robert Mitchum, Andrews created portrayals of tortured men at odds with their social standing, their sense of ethics, and even their romantic yearnings. Not infrequently, there was only a very fine line separating his (anti)heroes from most movie villains.

A grand juror who served on the case against JonBenet Ramsey’s parents thinks there was enough evidence to indict Patsy and John Ramsey for murdering their own daughter, and even feels he knows the identity of the killer. However, the grand juror who spoke to ABC News on a condition of anonymity doesn’t think JonBenet’s parents would have been found guilty if the case went to trial. “There is no way that I would have been able to say, ‘Beyond a reasonable doubt, this is the person,'” the juror told ABC News. “And if you are the district attorney,...

The Notebook is the North American home for Locarno Film Festival Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian's blog. Chatrian has been writing thoughtful blog entries in Italian on Locarno's website since he took over as Director in late 2012, and now you can find the English translations here on the Notebook as they're published. The Locarno Film Festival will be taking place August 3 - 13. Jacques Rivette in Locarno in 1991 when he received the Pardo d’onore. © Festival del film Locarno 1. Writing as a filmmaker “The only true criticism of a film is another film,” wrote Jacques Rivette, commenting on Ingmar Bergman’s Sommarlek (Summer Interlude) in 1958. He was making his intentions quite clear, and indeed his colleagues of the time recall how he was the first to be sure he would be a filmmaker. So a film cannot be explained in words, but Rivette still tried to put into words his own adventures as a spectator.

The name Peter Hyams may not be the mentioned in the same breath as contemporaries like Robert Zemeckis, Richard Donner and Barry Levinson, but this somewhat underappreciated filmmaker is far from a journeyman. During his five decade career he has effortlessly jumping between genres, churning out some entertaining and understated work, his most fruitful period being the 1980’s which saw the likes of Outland, The Presidio, Running Scared and 2010, a brave (and pretty enjoyable) attempt at crafting a sequel from Stanley Kubrick’s seminal work, 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Enemies Closer, his first film since the 2009 Michael Douglas-headlining Beyond a Reasonable Doubt, sees him reunited with aging action hero Jean-Claude Van Damme (their two previous films together, Sudden Death and Timecop, are arguably the highlight of the former martial artist’s career). Enemies Closer is a fun, unpretentious B-movie which bears the unmistakable mark of a cinematic craftsman (Hyams,...

We have a crazy amount of love around these parts for director Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw franchise, Repo! The Genetic Opera, Mother's Day, The Barrens) so any time a story breaks involving him, we're all over it. Read on for the skinny on his latest flick, Apex.
Per THR, Bousman is attached to helm the indie sci-fi action project, which is described as Predator meets Call of Duty. The plot tells of a Special Ops team, sent to obtain a Wmd from North Korea, that is transported to another world. The team members then find themselves pitted against a dangerous alien race.
James E. Cavanaugh conceived the idea and wrote the screenplay with an eye on current scientific trends in physics and biology.

Jesse Metcalfe cherishes his time spent filming Beyond A Reasonable Doubt alongside his idol Michael Douglas, because the veteran actor was "incredible to work with" and took the star "under his wing".
The Desperate Housewives hunk starred as a TV reporter in the 2009 crime drama, with Douglas playing a district attorney, and Metcalfe reveals the two became close during the shoot.
The actor tells the BBC, "Not so long ago I did a film with Michael Douglas called Beyond a Reasonable Doubt - that was a great experience.

Shawna Forde faces the death penalty as closing arguments begin in one of the strangest trials in Arizona history. Terry Greene Sterling on the accused's surprising endgame.
For Shawna Forde, a 43-year-old beautician-turned-border vigilante, the moment of truth is at hand. For months, Forde, a Minuteman charged with masterminding a 2009 home invasion in which 9-year-old Brisenia Flores and her dad, Raul, were slaughtered on the Arizona border, has maintained her innocence and pushed her lawyers to let her testify on her own behalf. But now, as one of the most bizarre and controversial murder trials in Arizona history draws to a close at Pima County Superior Court in Tucson, Forde has decided not to take the witness stand. It is the ultimate legal gamble. If Forde, who has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted first-degree murder, and several home-invasion-related crimes, is convicted, she could get the death penalty.

The last time we saw Michael Douglas on-screen was in one of the worst feature films in recent memory: Beyond a Reasonable Doubt. From that absolute nadir he does the unthinkable and turns in what may end up doing the unprecedented and win him a second Oscar for the same role. Standing at an overlong 130-odd minutes, Wall Street 2 comes to life and shines whenever Gordon Gekko is front and center. And, unfortunately, that’s just not enough. That’s not to say he’s a bit player - his arc is central and cornerstone - it’s just Shia Labeouf doesn’t have...

Amber Tamblyn, who previously co-led the ill fated series The Unusuals for ABC, will be joining the Princeton Plainsboro team on House. Tamblyn will play a highly competitive med student hired on to House's elite team. Fox is billing her as having a multi-episode arc, rather than joining the show as part of the permanent cast. It will be intriguing to see how far this thing will go. Here is the announcement from Fox.
Amber Tamblyn has signed on to appear in the upcoming season of House for a multi-episode story arc. She will play a brilliant and aggressive medical student whom Dr. House (Hugh Laurie) hires as a new team member although she is technically not yet qualified to practice medicine. Tamblyn’s character will be confronted with the morally and ethically questionable way that House practices medicine.

I made another visit to The Numbers website today, and I've come back with another interesting list, this time of the biggest financial failures of all time, in terms of absolute money lost.
I should also preface the list with some additional information. The Numbers website based their figures on the fact that the studio only received 50 percent of the box office revenue, which is probably a fairly close estimation. In reality, studios do spend a lot of money on marketing, which is not reflected in the production budget. Moreover, studios do not receive 100 percent of the the box office revenue. It is my recollection that studios generally receive around 80 percent of the revenue for the first week or two, and the percentage decreases the longer a movie stays in the theater. This is why budget theaters exist: They can charge much less for ticket prices because they only have...

Liv Tyler and Patrick Wilson have been cast in the suspense film "The Ledge" from first-time writer-director Matthew Chapman.
The actors join Terrence Howard and Charlie Hunnam in the story of a man (Hunnam) standing on a high-rise ledge who insists he must jump by noon as the policeman below (Howard) tries to manage the situation.
The film, which is being produced by Michael Mailer ("Loverboy") and Mark Damon ("Monster"), began shooting Monday in Baton Rouge, La.
Executive producers include Howard, Moshe Diamant, Bobby Ranghelov and Tamara Stuparich De La Barra.
" 'The Ledge' examines the different and sometimes dangerous beliefs people adopt as a means of surviving emotional trauma," Chapman said.
Added Mailer: "As more and more films succumb to the visual wizardry of 3D, 'The Ledge' explores the fourth dimension: the interior life of tortured souls hovering over the precipice of emotional nullity. This film...

Chicago – The DVD Round-Up has traveled the globe this week to bring you a diverse slate of under-the-radar titles received in the HollywoodChicago.com offices this holiday season. With so many major releases this time of year, it’s hard to cover everything, but we wanted to make sure you knew these were out there in case you have a gift card burning a hole in your pocket.
One quick note: We don’t usually inject opinion into the DVD Round-Up. It’s a recurring column merely designed for informational purposes regarding some lower profile titles new on shelves. We’d like to make a rare exception for “Sita Sings the Blues,” a simply wonderful animated film that we only wish we had more time to spotlight but that we wanted to make sure you knew was available before the end of the year. Don’t just go rent it.

District 9 I can't say anymore on this one than I already have in the past 24 hours here and here. It is now all up to you. 500 Days of Summer I liked this movie when I saw it back in July, but I can't say I have any intense need to revisit it. It satisfied the one time around, introduced us to an interesting new director and proved Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel are a match made in anti-romantic comedy heaven. All About Steve Ugh, I was offered a review copy and kindly declined. I suggest you move along. Extract Give it a rental, it won't cause any harm to do so, but just don't expect anything too great. It Might Get Loud I never saw this film, which features the personal stories of guitarists The Edge (U2), Jimmy Page...

Once every month or so, my mother will call and tell me, “I just saw a trailer for a film I’ve never heard of.” You can imagine, being the mother of a film blogger, a voracious pop culture consumer herself, and a very frequent movie-goer, when Leslie says she hasn’t heard of something before, it’s because no one else has heard of it. A couple of months ago, it was Beyond A Reasonable Doubt (sorry about that one, Michael Douglas). Today’s case in point is something called Extraordinary Measures. Same deal, a boringly titled film starring a couple of big names that, as best I can tell, no one has any awareness of.

Robert here looking at new releases this week. If you hadn't noticed (of course you've noticed) we've entered a strange barren time of year when the whiz-bang of summer has died off and the post-fest Oscar season has yet to start up. Pickings are slim so I'll remind you that these films are still in theaters: The Hurt Locker, Ponyo, District 9, In the Loop.
9 - The one film attempting to position itself for Oscar recognition will have an uphill climb, especially since three Animated Feature spots have practically been snatched up by Coraline, Ponyo, and Up, and there's plenty of competition for two remaining, should there be two remaining. Critical reaction hasn't been very kind, except toward the visuals and I'm reminded of how many filmmakers today are fantastic visual artists desperately in need of writers who aren't anywhere to be found. [rotten tomatoes / metacritic]

An undercooked crime flick whose real mystery is why it was made.
Jesse Matcalfe and Joel Moore in "Beyond a Reasonable Doubt"
Photo: Foresight Unlimited
The only thing that distinguishes "Beyond a Reasonable Doubt" from the cheesiest of TV cop-and-courtroom shows is the fact that you're expected to pay money to see it. It takes a brave man to dare to attempt a remake of even a lesser film noir by the great Fritz Lang, and director Peter Hyams is obviously that man. He's just as obviously not the right man.
Hyams is candid about wanting to appeal to a young demographic here, and this is the source of the movie's problems. The characters in the old noir films of the '40s and '50s had mileage on them — they had a past; they'd lived, often disreputably. Casting Jesse Metcalfe, of "Desperate Housewives," in the lead role of a...

If you're not attending the Toronto Film Festival this weekend, there are still plenty of new releases in theatres, although the quality of said releases may be a bit questionable. Perhaps the best bet is Shane Acker's animated sci-fi action-adventure 9, but if you're looking for something in the horror/thriller genre, you've got slasher flick Sorority Row and Whiteout starring Kate Beckinsale to choose from. Tyler Perry's latest Madea comedy I Can Do Bad All by Myself is also out this weekend, plus a handful of documentaries including No Impact Man, Joe Berlinger's Crude, and fashion magazine doc The September Issue. Now that Ben Lyons has gotten the boot from At the Movies, we no longer need to yell, "You lie!" at our TV screens each week. And with summer behind us, let's see what's shaking this week on the big screen.
Opening on 9/9/09 was, of course, 9, a bleak but beautiful animated feature about doll-like creatures — they're already calling the style of this stop-motion animated feature "stitchpunk" — fighting for survival in a bleak post-apocalyptic landscape.
While the storyline didn't thrill me, I was taken by director Shane Acker's stunning visuals and by his ability to create distinct personalities for his lead characters (who all have names such as 9, 2 and 6).
He's helped greatly with the latter by a terrific cast of actors, including Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Martin Landau, Christopher Plummer, Jennifer Connelly and Crispin Glover. 9 is way, way too bleak and disturbing for little kids — who should totally see...

Kate Beckinsale on ice.
Kate Beckinsale in "Whiteout"
Photo: Warner Bros.
It's probably not director Dominic Sena's fault that his new snowbound thriller, "Whiteout," suggests so many tantalizing genre directions in which the movie itself, unfortunately, doesn't go. The picture's general thrill deficit, however — well, that would seem to be Sena's purview.
Early on there's a scene in which U.S. Marshall Carrie Stetko (Kate Beckinsale) enters her quarters at the Antarctic research station where she's the lone law-enforcer and strips to her underwear, allowing the camera to ogle her behind as she bends over. Then she steps into a shower, affording us one of those shot-through-frosted-glass views of Beckinsale's (or somebody's) vaguely nude body luxuriating in the steamy spray. Naturally, we think: Okay, this is gonna be a movie with some R-rated skin. But no. The Antarctic, being a place where temperatures can plunge to 100 degrees below zero,...
