Cinema Guild has acquired North American distribution rights for “You Burn Me” (aka “Tú me abrasas”), directed by Argentina’s Matías Piñeiro.
The film had its world premiere at the Berlinale in February in the festival’s Encounters section. It won a special mention from the jury at Paris’s Cinéma du réel in March.
Cinema Guild will release the film in theaters following its currently unspecified North American festival premiere later this year. The company has also acquired rights to three earlies films by Piñeiro – “The Stolen Man” from 2007; “They All Lie” from 2009; and “Rosalinda” which will be released on home video and digital alongside “You Burn Me.”
An adaptation of “Sea Foam,” a chapter in Cesare Pavese’s Dialogues with Leucò, Piñeiro’s latest is an intimate and expansive meditation on death and desire. It is also a challenging exploration of the possibilities of adapting text to film.

During the short period that Disney+ has been active across the major markets of the Asia-Pacific region — just a little over two years in most countries — the Walt Disney Co. has gone through a period of uncharacteristic turmoil. A CEO shakeup, a secular reassessment of the streaming business, cost-cutting, shaky box-office results, speculation over asset sales and activist investors clamoring at the gates. But the company’s most recent earnings report beat analysts’ forecasts and gave CEO Bob Iger some of his Magic Kingdom mojo back. Iger reaffirmed that the company’s streaming operation will be profitable by this summer, while also unveiling a slew of projects and deals.

How can the filmmakers of low-budget independent films formulate sales and distribution strategies at a global level when they don’t have the same resources wielded by the larger production companies? As part of this week’s IFFR Pro Days, the industry program at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, experts gave their opinions.
Kyle Greenberg, head of marketing and distribution at U.S. company Utopia, said that filmmakers, especially ones helming independent and guerrilla productions, should be “the biggest advocates of their movies” and actively involved in the promotion, marketing and sales strategy of their titles.
“If you’re not advocating for yourself, you’re already losing. Filmmakers need to be thinking about marketing and audiences. If you are making a film in isolation, it could be art, but you are not thinking of where the movie lives,” he said.

Webtoons, the digital comics that have been the source material for scores of Korean films and TV series, are to receive a major boost from the South Korean government.

It’s a story — the attempted genocide of Europe’s Jews by the Nazis and their willing executioners — that has been told many times before. But, say the creators of the new German TV drama The Interpreter of Silence, it’s a story that needs to be told again and again.
The five-part limited series, which bowed on Hulu in the U.S. and on Disney+ worldwide Nov. 15, is up for this year’s Critics Choice Awards in the best foreign-language TV series category. The period drama will go up against the South Korean series Bargain, The Glory, Mask Girl and Moving, the French crime series Lupin, and the Italian mafia drama The Good Mothers.
Set in Frankfurt in 1963, The Interpreter of Silence follows the events of Eva Bruhns, a 24-year-old German woman, played by Katharina Stark, who gets a job as a Polish-to-German interpreter in the Auschwitz trials, the...

Prominent Korean filmmakers and arts organizers will hold a media event in Seoul on Friday calling for an investigation by authorities into the circumstances that led to the passing of Parasite star Lee Sun-kyun, who died last month at age 48 of an apparent suicide.
Before his death, Lee had been under police investigation for several weeks over suspected illegal drug use, accusations he strenuously denied. The actor claimed that he was the victim of a blackmail plot and that if he had consumed drugs, it was because he had been tricked into doing so. South Korean police have said that Lee passed several drug tests and sat for lengthy sessions of questioning, including one marathon meeting days before his death that lasted 19 hours. His lawyers have told local media outlets that the actor was upset by the way police were handling the investigation and how details were being leaked to the press,...

Spielberg: The First Ten Years by Laurent Bouzereau (Insight Editions) and Steven Spielberg: All the Films by Olivier Bousquet, Arnaud Devillard, and Nicolas Schaller (Black Dog & Leventhal Publishers)
I am not sure what Steven Spielberg obsessives like myself did to earn two lengthy, photo-backed, hardcover career appreciations, but I’m not complaining. Steven Spielberg: All the Films runs for nearly 500 pages and covers literally everything, from the director’s contributions to Rod Serling’s Night Gallery to The Fabelmans. Along the way are some unique insights, surprising facts (Leonardo DiCaprio was approached to play Tintin?), and the inclusion of some of his 1980s television work. And Spielberg: The First Ten Years is just as engaging, and even more in-depth.

Korea’s premium VOD industry continued to grow in the third quarter of 2023, with the number of subscriptions increasing by more than 700,000 to reach 19 million, according to the latest report from Media Partners Asia (MPA).
However, the dominance of Netflix in the market has resulted in two of the biggest local streaming platforms – Tving and Wavve – signing a memorandum of understanding for a merger. Local press is reporting that the MoU was signed by Cj Enm, which owns 48.85% of Tving, and Sk Square, which owns 40.5% of Wavve.
According to the MPA report, Netflix is currently the market leader in Korea, capturing 29% of new subscribers to reach 6.5 million subs, accounting for a 34% market share.
Tving came in second with 3.8 million subscribers and a 20% share, followed by Wavve with 3 million subs and a 16% share. Disney+ had a breakthrough quarter, mostly thanks to hit superhero action drama Moving, which helped it reach 2 million subscribers and an 11% share.

Webtoons, the vertical-scrolling iteration of digital comics that emerged some twenty years ago in Korea, along with the smartphone, are now a global medium. But they are only at the beginning of their global journey, says Charlie Park, CEO of Kakao Entertainment-owned Tapas.
Park was speaking Tuesday at the Asia Television Forum in Singapore in a session moderated by industry consultant Jimmy Kim.
Park explained that the webtoon segment was for several years a niche fan-driven activity with few opportunities for monetization. And suggested that the ‘wait or pay’ business model, introduced by Korean firm Daum, combined with the advent of micropayments, allowed money to flow in to the sector. “This in turn led to further investment and growth,” said Park.
“Our company has invested $1.5 billion in the webtoon industry, said Park. “That has caused quality generally to improve and had other impacts, such as allowing some webtoon creators...

It’s interesting how much we like a negative female character who is wholly violent and has not an inch of empathy but is bogged down by something like daddy issues or raging Ptsd. Maybe this is today’s manic-pixie dream girl. The signs are all there; she’s not like the other girls; no, really, never mind doing her nails; she probably doesn’t even shower every day; and she’s always hungry… for blood. Specifically, in the K-world, there’s a special attachment that fans have to intense female characters with superpower-level physical strength and the ability to fight for themselves, whether they are positive or negative. This is, presumably, a direct reaction to having female leads who are docile, caring, fragile, and in need of protection. They’re independent, career-driven women, but they’re still desperate for love and need their Prince Charming. No, there are female...

Ringing Korea’S Grand Bell
“Concrete Utopia,” South Korea’s Oscar contender, was Wednesday named best film at the country’s annual Grand Bell Awards. It also won prizes for best actor, best supporting actress, art direction, sound mixing and visual effects. A disaster movie set in a devastated Seoul, it makes an unusual Academy Awards selection, but has gained high praise from reviewers. Variety this week said the film felt like “’Earthquake’ crossed with ‘Lord of the Flies’.”
The Grand Bell’s best director award nevertheless went to Ryoo Seung-wan for “Smugglers,” while Ahn Tae-jin took the best new director award for “The Night Owl.”
In the other half of the event, Disney+’s “Moving” was named best series, earning Han Hyo-joo the best series actress award to boot.
The Grand Bell Awards, aka Daejong Film Awards, are organized by The Motion Pictures Association of Korea.

Disney+ membership grows past 150m worldwide.
Disney will cut a further $2bn in costs as CEO Bob Iger looks to enter a new period of building at the storied company.
Having already cut $5.5bn this year Iger said there were no plans for more redundancies on top of the 7,000 already announced, and intimated the savings would come from the beleaguered linear TV operation.
Iger told investors on the fourth quarter and full year earnings call on Wednesday that Disney’s streaming businesses remained on course to achieve profitability by Q4 2024.

It seems like Disney+ has picked a pattern for the kind of K-dramas they want to air: violent and action-packed. The Ott platform has recently had some gems like Moving and Worst of Evil, which are highly successful with big names and great plots. Vigilante seems to be in a similar category of “webtoon adaptations” or something to do with law enforcement. Earlier, The Killing Vote had a similar storyline, but with no buzz, the show didn’t do very well. This kind of storyline is quite overdone in the K-drama world, but somehow people continue to make them. Hopefully, the Nam Joo-Hyuk starrer will be entertaining and do well. The first two episodes are nothing new, and if it continues this way, there’ll be nothing exciting about the show except the lead’s performances.

However, YouTube maintains leadership of the online video market overall with 67% of total online video viewership, though share was down 3 points as TikTok (12% of viewership) gained traction in the market.

Cinema Guild has acquired the North American distribution rights for the new 4K restoration of Shinji Somai’s 1993 film Moving from MK2 Films. The New York-based distributor of world cinema plans to open the film in specialist U.S. and Canada theaters in 2024.
The newly restored version of Somai’s coming-of-age classic won the best restored film prize at Venice Classics when it premiered at the Biennale in September.
One of Somai’s best-known works, Moving premiered at the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard section in 1993. The film tells the story of Renko (Tomoko Tabata), a young girl coming to terms with her parents splitting up. Living with her mother Nazuna in Kyoto, Renko leans on her boyfriend and best friend as she tries to first get her parents to reconcile before deciding to find her own place in the world.

U.S.-based distributor Cinema Guild has acquired North American rights to the newly-restored 4K version of Somai Shinji’s 1993 classic “Moving” from French sales agent MK2 Films.
The Japanese coming-of-age drama won the best restored film award, the top prize in Venice Classics, when it premiered at the Biennale in September.
Cinema Guild, which also released restorations of Somai’s “Typhoon Club” (1985) and “P.P. Rider” (1983) earlier this year, will open the film in theaters in the U.S. and Canada in 2024.
When her parents split and her father Kenichi moves out of their family home, Renko (Tabata Tomoko), a bright and energetic 6th grade girl, is left alone with her mother, Nazuna, in Kyoto. As Nazuna sets out new rules for their life together, Renko makes plans of her own, and sees to it that any changes happening in her family happen on her terms.

Hulu announced today that Moving, which became the most-watched Korean original on the streamer and Disney+ globally earlier this summer, will be available in English in December.
The 20-episode series that’s an adaptation of Kang Full’s popular webtoon started streaming Aug. 9.
Starring Ryu Seungryong, Han Hyojoo and Zo Insung, Moving tells the story of a group of South Korean spies working to protect their super-powered children from harm and exploitation at the hands of malicious government agencies. Initially recruited because of their extraordinary abilities including flight, instant healing and enhanced senses, the spies disappeared without a trace after being tasked with carrying out increasingly dubious missions. Now with their children exhibiting similar abilities and a dangerous assassin rapidly picking off super-powered individuals, the parents must leave their peaceful lives behind to become the “monsters” they once were.
