Mindy Kaling got right to the point at the top of the Warner Bros Discovery presentation Wednesday by joking how her show The Sex Lives of College Girls is “filled with smoking hot guys who run around campus topless.”

“Oppenheimer” grabbed two out of three prizes at the Motion Picture Sound Editor’s 71st Golden Reel Awards on March 3 at the Wilshire Ebell Theater. Christopher Nolan’s explosive Oscar favorite won Dialogue/Adr and Effects/Foley, while Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” snagged Music Editing. Both films were led by supervising sound editor Richard King.
After also taking the top sound mixing prize this weekend at the 60th Cas Awards, “Oppenheimer” is now in the Oscar driver’s seat against the other sound nominees: “The Zone of Interest.” “Maestro,” “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One,” and “The Creator.”
The other Golden Reel film winners went to “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” for animated feature, “32 Sounds” for documentary, and “Society of the Snow” for foreign language. By the early 1990s, it was still fairly rare to see a Hollywood production invade New England to shoot a film. Things had certainly been made here: Ever heard of Jaws? It was shot entirely on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. And I made a documentary about another one: Stephen King’s Pet Sematary, which was shot entirely in Maine in 1988. In fact, much of my documentary film work has focused on stories native to New England. But, still, we didn’t see the kind of movie activity and buzz that we see nowadays. Despite its natural beauty of mountains, rocky coastlines, and beautiful beaches, New England can be difficult (and expensive) to navigate for a film crew. What’s more, during certain months of the year our weather can be unpredictable and harsh. We’re known for our Nor’easters and blizzards and even the occasional hurricane in the autumn months.

In Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," Albert Einstein (Tom Conti) only briefly appears. The famous scientist shares a few scenes with Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) himself, but these interactions are pivotal to the Manhattan Project, and the haunting realization about the world's future towards the end. There seems to be a misunderstanding regarding the involvement of the real Einstein in the creation of the atomic bomb — while the scientist's popular E = mc^2 equation does explain the theoretical nitty-gritty of the massive energy released by an atomic bomb, it does not provide any instructions for actually building one. Einstein was, in fact, denied security clearance to be involved with the Manhattan Project, and did not have a close relationship with Oppenheimer until the last decade of his life.

With the release of Oppenheimer, it’s time to rank all of director Christopher Nolan’s movies from worst to best (Bwaaaaahm!). This wasn’t an easy task. Unlike ranking five Indiana Jones movies or seven Mission: Impossible films, Nolan offers 12 films that range from historical dramas (Dunkirk, Oppenheimer), to sci-fi thrillers (Interstellar, Tenet) to mysteries (The Prestige, Memento) to his Batman trilogy. Through it all, Nolan has risen to become one of the world’s finest filmmakers, one of the few who can dependably fill theater seats on an opening weekend, and is considered the last respite for grown-up cinema fans. Here are all of Nolan’s films, from the weakest to the strongest.
12. Insomnia (2002)
It says a lot about Nolan that the “worst” film he directed is still rather good and worth watching. Insomnia is a remake of the Norwegian title and is perhaps notable that it’s...

Disney+’s acclaimed “Star Wars: Visions” anthology series from Lucasfilm moves beyond anime with “Volume 2.” The nine shorts in this second season tout a broader range of styles and techniques while showcasing the Star Wars franchise’s cultural impact throughout the world.
“We believed in this potential from the start when we expanded out more globally,” executive producer James Waugh told IndieWire. “We really thought we could show the world just incredible animation that’s being done out there and incredible cultural voices out there from different countries. Each one of these creators had something they wanted to say. They are such masters of their craft. And then we got to see the fun of watching all their different animation techniques and styles brought to life in ‘Star Wars’ in ways we never quite experienced before.”

I hardly ever regret buying a comic, but this was one of those times. I think what made it feel worse was the fact I missed the original release date, and then had my Lcs backorder me a copy. How Marvel can market this firstly as an #1 and secondly as a Wolverine comic is beyond me. It represents everything that is wrong with mainstream comics right now. The Wolverine solo series has been pretty much faultless since its return, so obviously with this Murderworld series, it’s a classic case of using popular characters to push another series. And I fell for it hook, line and sinker. The cover drew me in straight away with its variations of Wolverine through the years. Yes, I am an easy mark! But that is...

Haven't yet had your fill of "Star Wars" on the small screen? Well, you're in luck. Today brings some very good news about one of the best-ever additions to the popular space-faring franchise.
"Star Wars: Visions," the anime anthology series that filled in the gaps between the movies and shows with some of the most refreshingly original and exciting stories the property has ever seen, is coming back just in time for the geekiest "Star Wars"-themed holiday of them all. Oh, and the new season is bringing along some incredibly intriguing talent that should please just about any fan of animation out there, too. If "Star Wars" fatigue is a real thing, well, luckily nobody ever informed the sprawling creative team behind "Visions" about it.
Disney+ and Lucasfilm announced that season 2 of "Star Wars: Visions" will premiere on Disney+ streaming on "Star Wars Day" -- May 4, 2023. But wait, there's more!

This week I bring you a review for the latest of The Beast Agenda in Wolverine #29 plus a retro review from Wolverine comics past. The reason for the retro review is that I missed a Wolverine comic this month! My credentials are slipping! I only found out on the day it came out that the one-shot Murderworld: Wolverine even existed. I contacted my Lcs right away, unfortunately they didn’t have one to send out in the post but they’ve ordered me one for next month. So I booted up the random number generated and I was relatively happy with the issue it spat out.

If you’ve watched the new Netflix mystery drama, The Pale Blue Eye, then you’ve seen a work of fiction in which a young cadet named Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling) helps Detective Augustus Landor (Christian Bale) in his attempts to solve a series of murders at New York’s West Point Military Academy.
Of course while the real-life Poe did in fact attend West Point, the man is much better known as the legendary author, poet, literary critic, and editor who is widely regarded as the inventor of detective fiction, a major proponent of the short story, and one of the foundational writers of the horror genre. You know the names of his most iconic tales: “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “Masque of the Red Death,” “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Black Cat,” and so on. You know Chucky and Annabelle and Brahms and M3GAN… but do you recall the least famous killer doll of all? Probably not, because then it would be more famous, but you should know more killer dolls! While those aforementioned characters tend to get all the attention, and if you’re reading Den of Geek then you’ve probably seen at least one of the 10,000 Puppet Master movies, there is still a veritable toy store full of pint-sized killers.
It’s not hard to see why. On the surface, there’s nothing particularly scary about dolls, even if they come to life. After all, they’re only a couple feet tall – most of us could boot the stupid things across the room before they could do any damage. But the best killer doll movies use that sense of safety to their advantage, building tension by putting the monster in the room with unsuspecting victims.

Before diving into this week’s Bioshock discussion, would you kindly give last week’s episode covering Hunt: Showdown a listen?
At the inception of Safe Room, Neil and I had both made mental checklists of games we simply Had to talk about on the show. Games that we felt so passionately about that one of us would have to whack the other with a stick to get a word in edgewise.
For me, that game would be Bioshock.
Experiencing the descent to the underwater dystopia of Rapture will forever be a formative moment in my gaming history. It sounds like hyperbole, but at the time, Bioshock truly opened my eyes to the storytelling potential of video games.

Immediately after the title The Fall of Usher, pops up a second title card. This one looks like something from a silent movie and informs us that what we are about to see is “Told in the Style & Substance of A.E. Poe by one William W. Usher”. The film then cuts to William (Riker Hill; The Sentinel Chronicles 2023: Tears in the Snow) looking directly into the camera as he addresses us. It’s a modern setting, but he talks in the style of one of Poe’s characters. In the dark coming-of-age tale “The Pit,” narrow-minded rural Latvia seems as full of lurid secrets as Peyton Place, as well as being a locale where everyone has their nose in everyone else’s business. Marking the feature debut of writer-director Dace Pūce (who co-wrote with Monta Gagane and Pēteris Rozītis), it’s adapted from three stories by Latvian literary prize-winner Jana Egle. The action unfolds through the watchful eyes of an emotionally wounded boy stuck with his strict grandmother, but the film’s odd tone, incompletely developed characters and uneven performances fail to match the poignancy of its source. Named as Latvia’s submission for best international film, “The Pit” will premiere Stateside on Dec. 17 via streaming service Film Movement Plus.
Skinny, misunderstood 10-year-old Markus (Damirs Onackis) is unwillingly dispatched from Riga to the countryside following the death of his drug addict father, an artist. Flashbacks and gossip reveal...

Mouse Rat, the fictional band from Parks and Recreation fronted by Chris Pratt’s character Andy Dwyer, have officially released a pair of singles, “The Pit” and “Two Birds Holding Hands.”
Both songs originated in Parks and Rec episodes. “The Pit” comes from the Season One finale, and finds Andy turning his drunken, leg-breaking fall into a pit behind his then-girlfriend’s house into a grunge anthem (complete with hilariously exaggerated Eddie Vedder-style vocals). The official version of “The Pit” arrives with an animated lyric video directed by Grant Claire.

Following the release of the latest Wrong Turn movie, Constantin Music is set to release the film's soundtrack this Thursday, and we have the exclusive track premiere of "Snare Trap" from composer Stephen Lukach:
"The process for director Mike Nelson and I started by discussing some of our influences and inspirations, after which it became clear that he was very interested in the specific sounds and sonics of the score. He wanted it to be largely sound design-based and also to be as simple as possible when we could, focusing on finding key signature sounds for certain characters and situations as opposed to melodic themes. As we got into the scoring process, the sounds that Mike most gravitated towards were scratchy and piercing solo strings and high atonal synths to supplement the tension and horror, warped and manipulated pulses to add pace and intensity, and rumbling and growling basses...

Barbara Shelley in Dracula: Prince Of Darkness
Hammer Horror was known for its leading ladies but few put across as much force of personality as Barbara Shelley. Now the much loved actress has died, aged 88, after contracting Covid-19 in the run-up to Christmas and developing a secondary infection.
The London-born star, who began her career as a model, worked with Hammer during its heyday in the Sixties, on films including The Gorgon, Rasputin: The Mad Monk, Dracula: Prince Of Darkness and Quatermass And The Pit. She enjoyed a wider range of roles than most of her contemporaries, playing heroines and villains, vulnerable upper class ladies and capable scientists, always bringing a keen intelligence to her work. She had a passion for science fiction and horror and described Hammer as a family, considering herself very lucky to have had the opportunity to work with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. She continued to attend related events.

Barbara Shelley, an acclaimed British horror movie actress, has died at age 88 after contracting Covid-19.
Shelley’s agent, Thomas Bowington, told the U.K.’s press association that the actress spent two weeks in the hospital before Christmastime battling coronavirus. He added, “it’s most likely Covid is going to come up on the death certificate.”
Shelley was best known for her roles in classic horror films produced by London-based Hammer Film Productions (better known as Hammer Horror), including “The Gorgon,” “The Pit” and “Quatermass.”
She also starred alongside Christopher Lee in the 1966 movie “Dracula: Prince of Darkness,” directed by Terence Fisher. With that role, Shelley helped launch Hammer Horror’s productions into the pop culture lexicon and came to be known as the “Queen of Hammer.”
In 1984, Shelley joined the 21st season of BBC’s intergalactic sci-fi series “Dr. Who,” playing the role of Sorasta in the show’s “Planet of Fire” serial.

Say goodbye to your brain, and prepare to be melted into a tripped-out stupor with the latest collaboration between filmmakers Josh and Benny Safdie and electronic multi-hyphenate Oneohtrix Point Never. The creative mind meld has unleashed the new video for “Lost but Never Alone,” a track off the electronic musician also known as Daniel Lopatin’s new album, “Magic Oneohtrix Point Never.” Check it out below.
The Safdies and Lopatin have established themselves as one of the most visceral director/composer partnerships in contemporary cinema, as Lopatin provided the synth-heavy, nerve-rattling scores for the Safdies’ critically acclaimed films “Good Time” and “Uncut Gems.” Meanwhile, the filmmakers previously helmed the video for Oneohtrix Point Never’s 2017 “The Pure and the Damned.”

The director’s debut feature is a Latvian-Finnish co-production starring Russian newcomer Damirs Onackis in the lead role. Riga-born filmmaker Dace Pūce is now working on her debut feature, entitled The Pit. Before commencing work on this project, the Latvian helmer directed a few shorts, such as Annia (2017), Burnt by the Moon (2016) and Tango (2016). The film, inspired by a series of true stories published by Latvian writer Jana Egle in her first book, Gaismā, was penned by the director herself, Monta Gāgane and Pēteris Rozītis. The story revolves around a boy called Markuss (played by Russian newcomer Damirs Onackis), who must adapt to a new life with his granny in the countryside. After Emīlija – a neighbour’s daughter – makes some contemptuous remarks about Markuss’s father, he decides to teach her a cruel lesson. This has severe consequences that resonate throughout the village....
This Harley Quinn review contains spoilers.
Harley Quinn Season 2 Episode 7
And it was all going so well… after Harley and Ivy successfully took out most of the Injustice League, things were looking up for the pair. Ivy is engaged to Kite Man. Harley is finally free from the Joker, or at least we thought she was. After accidentally awakening the Clown Prince of Crime from his acid-induced normalcy, the terrible twosome were caught by Two-Face. And as this new episode starts, we join them in a very questionable courtroom. With Bane presiding, the duo are condemned to life in a very familiar looking prison filled with iconic Batman rogues.
No, we’re not visiting Arkham this time around but instead The Pit, a place made famous by Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. That’s all this episode takes from Nolan, though, as no women die and it’s...

"Going down is a suicide." Netflix has unveiled an official Us trailer for the highly acclaimed, instant classic Spanish horror film The Platform, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia. This film won awards at tons of major genre festivals last year, including the Audience Award at Tiff, Best Film & Audience Award at Sitges, and Best Special Effects at the Goya Awards (Spain's Oscars). The conceptual social commentary film is set entirely in a "vertical prison." There is one cell per level. Two people per cell. And only one food platform and two minutes per day to feed them all, going from top to bottom. An endless nightmare trapped in "The Pit." I saw this at Sitges last year and raved about it, saying it's "a thrilling and rousing film that deserves our attention." The Platform stars Ivan Massagué, Zorion Eguileor, Antonia San Juan, Emilio Buale, Alexandra Masangkay, & Zihara Llana.
