On this week’s “Real Time” on HBO, Bill Maher addressed the recent “Quiet on Set” documentary, which explored exploitation of children in Nickelodeon programming. Maher then used that to launch into a wider discussion expressing skepticism of modern progressive gender politics, including how much kids are exposed to nontraditional gender identities.
In a featured “New Rule” segment titled “Kid ‘n Prey”, Maher opened up, “And finally, New Rule: as one of the few people in the public eye who’s gone through life and never had kids, someone has to tell me, why am I always having to defend them? I don’t even like kids. But I also think it’s every adult’s job to protect them.”
He asked the crowd if they’d been watching Max/Investigation Discovery documentary “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV.”

Mario Van Peebles made a big mark on cinema following in his father’s footsteps, Melvin Van Peebles, to be a unique, prominent voice for the African-American community in cinema. He would make many appearances as an actor, including working with fellow gunslinger Clint Eastwood on Heartbreak Ridge, as the sword-wielding Kane in Highlander: The Final Dimension, and taking on the monumental task of portraying Malcolm X in the Michael Mann film, Ali. However, in 1991, New Jack City, which co-stars Ice-t, would put Van Peebles on the map as a director, and he would parlay his run with movies like Panther and the 1993 western film, Posse, in which he also starred.
Peeble returns to the Western genre in a semi-sequel to his 1993 movie that also sports an ensemble of impressive names. Outlaw Posse has Van Peebles working both in front and behind the camera again, and would even have him...

Christopher Nolan’s deal with Universal for “Oppenheimer” included this: The studio, a leader in early release of films to home platforms, would need to make a very big exception.
At 122 days, “Oppenheimer” had the longest theatrical window of 2023. Compared to the year’s 84 other wide releases, it was more than triple the industry average of 37 days. Universal’s second-longest window belonged to “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which was a bigger hit than Nolan’s film but lost theatrical exclusivity after 41 days.
Studios aren’t interested in specifics around theatrical windows — or, in offering PVOD data beyond top 10 lists that offer neither financial context nor independent verification. This is our attempt to provide a full-year view of theatrical windows, after prior surveys revealed a 30-day average for the first four months of 2023 and 40 days for early summer.

If you thought “Batgirl” was the end of it, think again. Warner Bros. has shelved and will take a tax write-off on another completed film, this time a Looney Tunes live-action and animated movie called “Coyote vs. Acme” starring John Cena, IndieWire has confirmed. THR first reported the news.
Principal photography on “Coyote vs. Acme” was completed in New Mexico last year, and the film originally intended for streaming has a budget in the $70 million range. But Warner Bros. is deciding to not move forward with the movie and has already realized the tax savings in its Q3 earnings, which were reported yesterday.
Warner Bros. had no comment on the exact method by which the film is being shelved and written off or how much the studio stands to recoup, but Deadline is reporting that it is taking an estimated $30 million write-down, which the studio believes is more than the...

After starring in the comedy Vacation Friends (which I enjoyed much more than our reviewer did) and its sequel (didn’t watch that one yet) for the Hulu streaming service, Lil Rel Howery has taken the lead in another Hulu Original – but this time they switched up genres. Their new collaboration is the sci-fi horror movie The Mill, which is set to start streaming on October 9th as part of the service’s “Huluween” event. With that release date just over a week away, we’ve gotten our hands on a trailer for The Mill, and you can check it out in the embed above.
Directed by Sean King O’Grady (We Need to Do Something) from a screenplay by Jeffrey David Thomas (All American: Homecoming), The Mill sees Howery playing the role of a white-collar businessman who mysteriously wakes up in an open-air prison cell containing only an old grist mill.

In 1993, Mario Van Peebles dabbled in the Western genre with Posse. Peebles took after his father, Melvin Van Peebles, who was a notable filmmaker in the blaxploitation genre in the 1970s. Mario appeared as an actor in films like Rappin’, Heartbreak Ridge starring Clint Eastwood, and the infamous Jaws: The Revenge, which featured an apathetic Michael Caine. He would also head up his own projects as a writer and director, much like his father. One of the more popular films Peebles would be known for is the 90s street crime classic, New Jack City.
Peebles is returning to the director’s chair for a new feature he wrote called Outlaw Posse. The film is a Western that bears no connection to the similarly titled Posse. Highland Film Group has picked up the distribution and has shared a first look at the film with a new picture exclusively shared by Variety.

Warner Bros. isn’t happy with industry consensus appointing “Gran Turismo” as the weekend’s top-grossing film, beating “Barbie.”. It will be small solace, but Warners’ “Meg 2: The Trench” is the dominant title on this week’s VOD charts.
“Meg 2” moved to PVOD after 21 days — a quick turnaround previously reserved for Max exclusives and/or lower-budget titles like “Magic Mike’s Last Dance” and “House Party.” However, “Meg 2” is the $130 million sequel to a film that grossed over $500 million worldwide.
It dropped Friday and quickly reached #1 at iTunes. It also is #1 at Vudu, more impressive since its chart covers seven days and “it “Meg 2” was available for only three of them. Google Play, as always lagging a few days behind, has it at #3 and rising.
“Meg 2” opened two weeks after “Barbie,” yet came to PVOD at least 11 days ahead of Greta Gerwig’s #1 film for 2023. Though not confirmed, the PVOD...

If you thought the chances of the Duffy Wrestling League succeeding would increase on Heels Season 2, the latest trailer will probably dash those hopes.
Starz on Monday unveiled a new sneak peek at the next chapter of the Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig drama, and it teases lots of tension for everyone involved.
The premium cabler previously teased the second season with a trailer earlier this month, but the latest footage hints at plenty of big swings in the storytelling department.
Heels Season 1 was a big success story, and with fans waiting almost two years for fresh episodes, there are high expectations to deliver a satisfying follow-up season.
A small-town sports drama series based on a wrestling league in rural Georgia, Heels is aptly named after the wrestling term for a villain or antagonist.
"Most stories center around heroes vs. villains, but in wrestling, it's faces vs. heels," the logline teases.

Cruel Angels Past Sundown: "New Mexico Territory, 1882: She comes to the Klein ranch at sunset, a strange naked pregnant woman dragging a cavalry saber. Annette Klein and her husband have built peace between their marriage and secret relations beyond, but their serenity dies in bloodshed tonight through a cannibalistic demon and a mad preacher.
Annette barely escapes the bloodbath to the nearby town of Low’ s Bend, where she might find safety with a shotgun-toting barkeep, two no-nonsense boarding room ladies, and the gunslinging bounty hunter who’ s captured Annette’ s heart.
But hell is at her heels. If she’ s going to survive until dawn, she’ ll have to forget everything she knows about peace and mercy, and face a hollow malevolence more ancient and ruthless than she’ s ever imagined."
Written by Hailey Piper, Cruel Angels Past Sundown will be available on July 25th from Death’s Head Press!

The official trailer for Starz’s Heels season two reveals that Jack has lost himself and needs to rediscover who he is and what’s important. Tubi opens June with an intense WWII drama “Inglourious Basterds.” Allied officer Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) assembles a team of five tough Jewish soldiers to spread fear throughout the Third Reich. They have one assignment: assassinate Nazi leaders. Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed the unconventional war drama. Eli Roth, Melanie Laurent, and Christopher Walz co-star.
Watch the trailer of “Inglourious Basterds”:
The network is also streaming the original documentary “Mystery Unsolved: The Adnan Syed Story” on June 7. The murder of teenager Hae Min Lee was the focal point of a “Serial” podcast, which questioned if boyfriend Syed was her killer. After serving 22 years in prison, Syed was released, still proclaiming his innocence. Now, he may return.
Another streamer original, “Magic Carpet Rides,” arrives June 14. It centers on a social influencer torn between sharing her budding romance or honoring her boyfriend’s request to keep their life private.

Every time Lance Reddick appeared in White Men Can’t Jump, my heart ached a little. Reddick, a solid character actor of our time, has been in so many popular things, from Lost to John Wick, and no matter how the movie or show has turned out to be, the man has always nailed his parts. This movie, which is his first posthumous release of many, is no exception either, where Reddick pretty much nails it as the worn-out dad of one of the two main leads. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about White Men Can’t Jump.
Let me be very clear: I am not against remakes. In fact, I do like the idea of reimagining stories in different contexts. Not every single piece of art needs to be wholly original. But when you are remaking something like White Men Can’t Jump, a widely admired basketball comedy from the nineties,...

So, do you have an appetite for sports films after the entertaining true life-inspired Air from a few weeks ago? To be more specific do you have, as Cheech and Chong most famously proclaimed, a “basketball jones”? Oh, here’s the movie for you! Now unlike the earlier film, this isn’t set in the 1980s, though it has a connection to a previous decade. And it’s not “inspired by true events”. This is more of a rollicking “buddy comedy” and is a remake of a movie from over 30 years ago (the decade being the 1990s). Perhaps it will once and for all either prove this true or false per the still provocative title, White Men Can’T Jump.
Speaking of time, this version starts with a flashback going back only six or seven years. It’s a telling TV interview on a cable sports show profiling high school basketball...

If you were wondering what’s poppin’ with best-selling rap star Jack Harlow this month, well, he’s officially in the industry, baby. The film industry to be precise.
The same artist who recently claimed he was “the hardest white boy since the one who rapped about vomit and sweaters” makes his acting debut with a remake of the 1992 sports comedy classic “White Men Can’t Jump.”
But there’s nothing hard about this new movie, even with its R-rated language. It’s a near total Disneyfication of the original in which all the incredible dialogue, daredevil sports moves, charismatic acting and unpredictable plotting have been replaced with vaguely good-natured banter and shaggy underdog clichés.
“White Men Can’t Jump” stars Sinqua Walls — so excellent in Nikyatu Jusu’s “Nanny” — as Kamal, a former high school basketball legend who fell on hard times and now barely scrapes by as a delivery driver.

Plot: Multi-platinum rap superstar Jack Harlow makes his big-screen debut as Jeremy, a former star of the game whose injuries stalled his career, and Sinqua Walls stars as Kamal, once a promising player who derailed his own future in the sport. Juggling tenuous relationships, financial pressures and serious internal struggles, the two ballers—opposites who are seemingly miles apart—find they might have more in common than they imagined possible.
Review: When White Men Can’t Jump was released in 1992, it came at a time when basketball was viewed much differently than it had been decades prior. The chemistry between Woody Harrelson’s unexpected baller and Wesley Snipes’ experienced player made for a mismatch that would work in their favor as Ron Shelton’s movie became a box office hit. Three decades later, White Men Can’t Jump gets a contemporary update as streamers continue to mine their IP. While the remake...

The poster for the original 1992 film White Men Can’t Jump featured a photo of its two stars, identified merely as “Wesley” and “Woody.” They were, of course, Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson, whose charismatic screen personas were already so well-defined that no further explanation was necessary.
That’s not exactly the case with this ill-advised remake, which comes across as an uninspired retread that lacks its own reason for being other than its appeal to baby boomer nostalgia. And no disrespect to the talents of the new film’s leads, but “Sinqua and Jack” just doesn’t have the same ring. Which is probably why the new White Men Can’t Jump is premiering domestically on Hulu rather than theatrically.
The film is directed by Calmatic, who, after this and the recent House Party, seems to be establishing a strange career pattern making inferior remakes of beloved ‘90s films. Sinqua Walls...

Just before “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal) arrives on PVOD May 16 (an unusually long 41 days after theatrical release), three films — two are new releases — ranked #1 this week.
May 12 saw the debut of two movies with similar plots. In “The Mother,” Jennifer Lopez is a retired government agent who rescues the daughter she gave up for adoption years before, while “Hypnotic” stars Ben Affleck as a cop trying to find his missing daughter. There the resemblance ends: “The Mother” is #1 at Netflix, while Robert Rodriguez’s $70 million “Hypnotic” opened in theaters to disastrous results.
The difference doesn’t lie with the couple’s respective star power, and both films draw on the same “Taken” template. However, “The Mother” seems fresher with Lopez in the Liam Neeson/Gerard Butler role and it’s a streaming original — a platform that makes it easier to attract viewers with a familiar name.
Affleck remains a viable draw.

Jack Harlow makes his acting debut in the new remake of “White Men Can’t Jump.”
“It was grueling. It was a hot summer,” the 25-year-old musician told Variety at the film’s premiere in Los Angeles on Thursday night. He stars in the movie as Jeremy, a basketball hustler.
While shooting the film, Harlow was also juggling the production of his latest album “Jackman.” “I just made it work,” Harlow said. “I’m a hardworker, I guess.”

After 41 days in theaters and over $518 million in domestic box office, Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” will debut May 16 on PVOD. For a record-breaking blockbuster that could be the year’s biggest hit, that might seem… premature.
At the same point in its trajectory, “Top Gun: Maverick” had grossed $575 million and wouldn’t arrive on PVOD (for sale) for another 98 days. However, by Universal’s standards the release of “Smb” is 10 days late. Under the studio’s agreement with exhibitors, films that open over $50 million can move to home availability after 31 days.
“Smb” represents a trend: The period of theatrical exclusivity continues to shrink. With 22 wide releases to date in 2023, the average window stands at 30 days. When we looked at the average in mid-February across a six-month period, the window was 35 days.
With the ongoing WGA strike and DGA negotiations beginning, questions around streaming value remain a major issue.

After years of tech-driven disruption (remember when a phone company briefly owned Warner Bros.?), David Zaslav has been trying to strike a back-to-basics, business-as-usual tone with anyone who will listen: Wall Street analysts, Hollywood creatives and most recently the crowd of theater owners gathered in Las Vegas at CinemaCon this week.
The Warner Bros. Discovery chief has strongly rejected the streaming-first strategy of his predecessor, Jason Kilar, the Hulu cofounder who advanced day-and-date or HBO Max-only releases for Warner Bros. movies. At CinemaCon, Zaslav promised long theatrical runs for Warner’s slate of new movies like “Barbie” and “The Flash.”
Movies seemed like something of an afterthought at the unveiling of Max, the replacement for HBO Max, this month. “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” which faltered at the box office, will have its streaming debut as Max begins service on May 23. There was no mention of streaming-only movies.

Since Warner Bros. Discovery already dropped the first trailer right in time for “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” it’s no surprise that “Blue Beetle” didn’t get much more new footage beyond a longer version of the existing trailer.

If you don’t know Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi for his music, you might know him from his acting roles in films like Bill & Ted Face the Music, X, Don’t Look Up, and House Party. Deadline reports that Mescudi has just lined up his next movie, signing on to star in the action horror comedy Hell Naw – which is being produced by Sam Levinson, creator of the HBO series Euphoria.
Keith and Kenny Lucas, the Oscar-nominated writers of Judas and the Black Messiah, are writing the screenplay for Hell Naw, but plot details are being kept under wraps. All we know at this time is that the story takes place during Paris Fashion Week and there will be zombies.
Mescudi is producing the film with Karina Manashil and Dennis Cummings through their company Mad Solar, while Sam Levinson and Ashley Levinson produce through their company Little Lamb. Bron and H.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal) reasserted its potential to be bigger than any upcoming summer movie with a stellar third-weekend showing of $58,230,000. Now at $434,330,000 domestic ($872 million worldwide), the Nintendo animated adaptation from Illumination could outgross all post-Covid titles other than “Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($805 million). That includes “Top Gun: Maverick” ($719 million) and “Avatar: The Way of Water” ($684 million).
With a strong $23.5 million opening, “Evil Dead Rise” (Warner Bros. Discovery) also buttressed a sense of improved fortunes for theaters — just in time for exhibitors and distributors heading to Las Vegas for Cinemacon.
The third-weekend drop for “Smb” of 37 percent was a better hold than “Maverick,” which represented the stellar third-weekend hold of 2022. Another curiosity: if Universal doesn’t start its PVOD window countdown until a film grosses less than $50 million, it still have another month as a theatrical exclusive.

"Hustle harder." 20th Century Studios has revealed the full-length official trailer for their upcoming remake of White Men Can't Jump, this one directed by Calmatic (following up his remake of House Party that opened earlier this year). The original White Men Can't Jump movie, co-starring Wesley Snipes & Woody Harrelson, opened in 1992 and was a huge hit at the time. I remember everyone talking about it then. This remake reuses the exact some concept with a few modern tweaks - moving it to the West Coast this time. It's about a pair of basketball hustlers who team up to earn some extra cash - starring Sinqua Walls and Jack Harlow in this update. The cast also includes Lance Reddick (Rip), Teyana Taylor, Laura Harrier, Tamera Kissen, Myles Bullock, Vince Staples, and Zak Steiner. This looks damn good! Better than expected, staying true to what made the original great. One of the...

Box Office: ‘Super Mario Bros. Movie’ to Rule Over ‘Evil Dead Rise’ and ‘Guy Ritchie’s the Covenant’
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” will rule again in its third weekend at the box office. In maintaining the No. 1 spot in North America, the family film is expected to take down two newcomers, the supernatural horror sequel “Evil Dead Rise” and action-war thriller “Guy Ritchie’s the Covenant,” as well as A24’s mind-bender “Beau Is Afraid,” which is expanding nationwide.
Universal and Illumination’s animated “Mario” adventure has grossed $366.3 million domestically to date. In the next few days, it will surpass “Minions: The Rise of Gru” ($369 million) as the highest-grossing animated film of the pandemic era. With $724 million globally, it already stands as the biggest movie of the year so far. Now in its third outing at the domestic box office, “Mario” is looking to bring in roughly $45 to $50 million, a massive result at this point in its theatrical run.

With the caveat that Universal’s animated blockbuster “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is going to win a third weekend at the box office with very little effort, we’re still going to see four new wide releases this weekend, including one expanding nationwide after opening in just four theaters. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Warner Bros. and New Line team with Sam Raimi for the latest incarnation of his popular ’80s horror franchise, “Evil Dead Rise.” This one is directed by Irish filmmaker Lee Cronin (“The Hole in the Ground”), who isn’t quite that well known outside of horror circles, but he clearly impressed those that saw it at its SXSW Film Festival premiere. With 44 reviews at the time of this writing, the movie has a surprisingly high 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which should help the fact that it has a relatively no-name cast.

HGTV is moving head with its competition series Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge, a project that was originally set to star Stephen “tWitch” Boss and his wife Allison Holker before the dancer/deejay died in December.
Supermodel Ashley Graham will now host the show that’s set to bow this summer on HGTV and Max.
The plan is to feature eight teams of HGTV stars as they transform a Southern California home into a real-life Barbie Dreamhouse. In the end, one Barbie fan will get the chance to win a once-in-a-lifetime stay in a home created for dreamers.
Here are the teams: Egypt Sherrod and Mike Jackson (Married to Real Estate); Jasmine Roth (Help! I Wrecked My House) and Antonia Lofaso (Beachside Brawl); Ty Pennington (Rock the Block) and Alison Victoria (Windy City Rehab); Jonathan Knight and Kristina Crestin (Farmhouse Fixer); Christina Hall and James Bender (Christina on the Coast); Keith Bynum...
