Vasquez Rocks is located in the northern part of Los Angeles County about 25 minutes away from Downtown L.A. via the 14 freeway. It's close enough to the city to be easily accessed by car, but far away enough to look like a remote wilderness. The park's celebrated rock formations look eerie, ancient, and alien from certain angles, making it a popular place for film and TV productions going back to the 1930s.
Trekkies likely recognize Vasquez Rocks as an oft-reused filming location, serving as a variety of alien worlds for various "Star Trek" projects. The park was featured in the "Original Series" episodes "Shore Leave", "Arena", "The Alternative Factor", and "Friday's Child". Later, Vasquez Rocks would serve as Vulcan "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" and "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home," released in 1983 and 1984 respectively.
Fans of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" would recognize Vasquez Rocks from the episode "Who Watches the Watchers?...

A quartet of fast-rising British names are coming together for a buzzy new project launching at the Cannes market.
Bella Ramsey, Louis Partridge and Ruby Stokes are set to lead Sunny Dancer, the sophomore feature from George Jaques. Embankment Films is handling global pre-sales of the film, which it says showcases the “best of new British talent.”
“Sunny Dancer” follows Ivy (Ramsey), a teenager in remission from cancer, whose gloriously outspoken mum and well-intentioned dad insist she attend Children Run Free Camp, a summer retreat for young adults affected by cancer. The camp’s slogan, “Where kids come to kid,” does little to alleviate Ivy’s apprehension, and a quick Google search confirms her fears when she stumbles upon a cringeworthy promotional video filled with tacky messages and clichéd sunsets. As if conquering cancer wasn’t enough of a challenge, Ivy now faces the prospect of spending her summer at what she calls “chemo camp.

The Oscars added a category for casting, and it’s about damn time.
The announcement of the new category, slated to debut in 2026 for films released in 2025, has been warmly received on social media by awards aficionados. Many consider it a long-overdue acknowledgment, especially since the Casting Directors Branch was established over a decade ago in 2013. However, this raises questions about future categories and if, when, and how they will be accommodated in an awards ceremony that aims to stay under three hours.
It’s important to note that the Academy has yet to commit to featuring the best achievement in casting award during the televised ceremony. Details regarding eligibility and voting for the inaugural award will be disclosed in April 2025, alongside the complete rules for the 98th Academy Awards. The presentation method will be determined by the Academy’s Board of Governors and its administrative leadership at a later date.

At the British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) on Dec. 3, Andrew Haigh‘s “All of Us Strangers” domainted, winning seven races including Picture, Director, and Screenplay. Meanwhile, Mia McKenna-Bruce won Best Lead Performance for “How to Have Sex” while her co-star, Shaun Thomas, tied for Best Supporting Performance along with “All of Us Strangers” scene stealer Paul Mescal. But what do these little independent awards mean for the larger awards season? Let’s take a look.
Firstly, “All of Us Strangers” had a great night. The fantasy film also won Music Supervision, Cinematographer, and Editing. This overwhelming response from British voters could indicate that the same will happen at the BAFTAs. “All of Us Strangers” could be in line for nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor for Mescal, and Best Actor for Andrew Scott. There are some big names, of course, that these creatives will...

Welcome to another edition of Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on key execs and companies outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. This week we’re talking with British indie film veteran Phil Hunt, who is the founder of a raft of companies including production outfit and film financier Head Gear, international sales business Bankside and, more recently, New Zealand and Australian distribution genre label (Yet) Another Monster Company.
Phil Hunt is not a conformist. From the moment he burst onto the British independent scene more than two decades ago with his microbudget productions Fast Food and Chunky Monkey – the former starring a young Gerard Butler and the latter an off-beat black comedy about a loner with a penchant for Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and Julie Andrews – it was clear that this was a guy who was not going to...

The east Londoner won a Bafta for her performance as the teenage lead in Sarah Gavron’s hit 2019 film. Now, on the eve of three new stage and screen projects, she talks about her whirlwind four years
At 15, Bukky Bakray was in drama class at school in east London, working her way through lines she can no longer remember, when she spotted two unfamiliar figures at the back of the room. “We all thought they were Ofsted inspectors,” she says. “We just ignored them and carried on.”
It turns out they were director Sarah Gavron and casting director Lucy Pardee, who were dropping into schools across London to find young actors for Gavron’s new film, following her star-studded 2015 historical drama Suffragette. Bakray’s presence stood out among the hundreds of students they went on to observe and she was cast in her debut role, as the lead in what would become 2019’s Rocks.

Starring rising Brit actress Rosy McEwen (Vesper), the debut film will premiere tomorrow [Saturday September 3] in the Venice Days competition, before playing at Toronto and then getting its UK premiere at the London Film Festival where it will compete for the Sutherland Award for Directorial Debut.
The feature is set against the backdrop of late 1980s England with Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government about to pass a law stigmatizing gays and lesbians. The climate forces Jean, a Pe teacher, to live a double life. As pressure mounts from all sides, the arrival of a new girl at school catalyses a crisis that will challenge Jean to her core. Seoul, Aug 25 (Ians) South Korea’s easternmost islets of Dokdo were not named on iPhone maps in the US, Britain and 20 other countries, a professor said here on Thursday, amid diplomatic tensions with Tokyo over Japan’s renewed claims to the East Sea outcroppings.
Dokdo has long been a recurring source of tension between the two neighbours, as Tokyo continues to make the sovereignty claims in its policy papers, public statements and school textbooks.
The name of Dokdo was not seen in 22 countries’ iPhone maps, including France, Egypt and the Philippines, said Seo Kyoung-duk, a Sungshin Women’s University professor well known for his efforts to promote Korean interests abroad, reports Yonhap news agency.
Dokdo only appeared on the Apple smartphone map in South Korea, while the islets were labeled Takeshima, the name Tokyo uses in its sovereignty claim to the islets, in Japan.
In 2019, Seo surveyed the online map service of Google Inc.

After roles in Catastrophe and I May Destroy you, Sarah Niles is relishing her Emmy nomination for Ted Lasso. She talks about giggling on set and why British shows need to be braver
It might be the medical breakthrough the world has been waiting for. Based on a sample size of one, it appears that an Emmy nod can cure Covid. Sarah Niles was laid up in bed at home in London when she heard that, 5,000 miles away in Los Angeles, she’d been nominated for best supporting actress in a comedy series. “I was feeling really sick,” she says, “but I soon got better. The Production Guild of Great Britain (Pggb) has unveiled its award winners for 2022 ahead of the prize ceremony on Saturday. Scroll down for the full list.
The Production Team of the Year Award was won by the crew behind Northman, Robert Eggers follow-up to The Lighthouse, including producer Mark Huffam.
According to jury chair Callum McDougal, the decision was made in part because the film was the first major feature to shoot in Northern Ireland during Covid, which sent “a sign across the world that we could continue to work safely in this country and deliver film successfully.”
A special mention in the category went to the team behind Sarah Gavron’s Rocks.
The Pggb High-End TV Production Team of the Year Award went to Andrew Haigh’s See-Saw series The North Water following a challenging shoot.
“The North Water team demonstrated how to survive the perfect production storm: you...

The major prizes were spread out and the return to a live event was welcome – but how well did it pay off?
Bafta shares the love
This year saw the major awards spread out. With five prizes, Dune was technically the most awarded film, though this may have passed TV viewers by because they were all in craft categories and therefore rushed through in a round-up on the BBC broadcast.
Three films earned two awards each: Coda (supporting actor, adapted screenplay), West Side Story (supporting actress, casting) and best film and director winner The Power Of The Dog. Adding in...

A cast of nonprofessional newcomers captivate in a realist drama reminiscent of Sarah Gavron’s Rocks
Swiss film-maker and former social worker Fred Baillif has created this pressure-cooked realist drama about a group of teen girls in a care home, where there is something more dysfunctional and tragic about the supervising staff than about the inmates themselves. Lora (Claudia Grob) is the director of this residential institution, a tough veteran of the system. Under her wing are troubled girls including Audrey (Anaïs Uldry), Précieuse (Joyce Esther Ndayisenga) and Justine (Charlie Areddy). Each of them is acting out, each has been abused in some way, but they find love and solidarity in this home: for them it is la famille, slangily shortened to la mif, equivalent, perhaps, to “the fam”.
But from the very outset, it is Lora herself who is in serious trouble: she is officially reprimanded for allowing a...
