I'm willing to trust that it will all come together

In a episode 502 review Bjd-636178 asked if they were missing something. The answer is, YES. The scenes with Joanie are about 30-35 years into the future. It is difficult to know the reasoning behind this part of the story, except perhaps to indicate the damage that all four of Joanie's parents (and a grandmother) inflicted upon her. But I trust that by the season/series end there WILL be a justification, and connections made to the "present day" bulk of the eps that are rewarding for we long-time viewers.
As for the present day plot, I find it very interesting and satisfying. Maura Tierney impresses me more each episode, and as Helen lives through her grief she is developing into a stronger individual than her mother, her ex-husband, her children, and Vik's parents ever allowed her or expected her to be.
Noah continues to display his own worst tendencies of jealousy, anger, and blaming anyone but himself. Will he find some peace or finally self-destruct (again)? Perhaps the destruction would be more permanent, if so.
Sad final season.

I am enjoying the current day story and the growth it's showing in the lead characters; however, the story with Sierra and Vik's baby seems unnecessary. They've added so many secondary characters who seem unimportant to the story. But the growth of Noah and Helen is great. Cole is certainly missed. I wish they had carried the story into the future with him still being a part of the story, but maybe that wasn't possible (I believe the actor was not interested after losing Ruth Wilson). I am not enjoying the story with Joanie 30 years into the future. I wish it had been involving her more as a young adult rather than an aged character who we know nothing about. It's hard to be sympathetic or understand her motives. This will go down as my second least favorite season (number 3 was the worst), but I am glad we're having a send off and tonight's episode was fairly good.
Please stop

Of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. So this may just be a matter of taste, but what they are doing with this show is downright a disgrace. For a show of such amazing quality in first couple of seasons, it was obviously tricky to keep that up for a long time. But with season 5 it is clear to everyone that all remotely sensible ideas have run out and the creators would do themselves a favor if they just stopped the production all together. I am incredibly disappointed and I'm giving up on the show.

I am 4 episodes into it but thinking I'll quit. I gave it a chance because I liked the series a lot. How did they manage to leave out the most interesting characters? I keep waiting for Cole to turn up, he was my favorite. Hope has run out, I have to accept it's going to be about the now grown children, the future which makes it comparable to a sci fi series, a character that entered end of Season 4 and was not proving to be interesting at all. Since this is similar to watching a brand new series, I am going to find a brand new series to watch.
