1. Green Lantern (2011)

PG-13 | 114 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

39 Metascore

Reckless test pilot Hal Jordan is granted an alien ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers that inducts him into an intergalactic police force, the Green Lantern Corps.

Director: Martin Campbell | Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong

Votes: 296,212 | Gross: $116.60M

Number one with a bullet. Or a ring, whichever you prefer. Bad dialog, bad casting(Blake Lively), bad story, bad villain. The one highlight is Mark Strong as Sinestro. I just couldn't believe how lame this was.

2. Batman & Robin (1997)

PG-13 | 125 min | Action, Sci-Fi

29 Metascore

Batman and Robin try to keep their relationship together even as they must stop Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy from freezing Gotham City.

Director: Joel Schumacher | Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, George Clooney, Chris O'Donnell, Uma Thurman

Votes: 268,221 | Gross: $107.33M

I know it's not number 1, but trust, this is the gold standard of suck. Alicia Silverstone rose her Clueless fame all the way to a tacked on boring version of Batgirl. There couldn't have been a script to this film. I think they just wrote ideas on a hat and filmed whatever they pulled out. Thank goodness I saw Pulp Fiction before this or I would have lost all hope on Uma Thurman. Stallone must've got a chuckle from seeing Arnold in this.

3. Catwoman (2004)

PG-13 | 104 min | Action, Crime, Fantasy

27 Metascore

A shy woman, endowed with the speed, reflexes, and senses of a cat, walks a thin line between criminal and hero, even as a detective doggedly pursues her, fascinated by both of her personas.

Director: Pitof | Stars: Halle Berry, Sharon Stone, Benjamin Bratt, Lambert Wilson

Votes: 125,835 | Gross: $40.20M

This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. In any genre. Who greenlit this? Who said it was okay to go into theaters? Why at no point did anyone in a position of power stop production and say 'this is wrong'? I personally blame this movie as the reason we can't get a Wonder Woman project off the ground.

4. Spider-Man 3 (2007)

PG-13 | 139 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

59 Metascore

A strange black entity from another world bonds with Peter Parker and causes inner turmoil as he contends with new villains, temptations, and revenge.

Director: Sam Raimi | Stars: Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Topher Grace, Thomas Haden Church

Votes: 638,067 | Gross: $336.53M

So much potential - wasted. This movie never got going for me. It was just weird and bloated. How is that possible for a movie that's 2 hours 20 minutes?

5. Judge Dredd (1995)

R | 96 min | Action, Crime, Sci-Fi

In a dystopian future, Joseph Dredd, the most famous Judge (a police officer with instant field judiciary powers), is convicted for a crime he did not commit and must face his murderous counterpart.

Director: Danny Cannon | Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Armand Assante, Rob Schneider, Jürgen Prochnow

Votes: 124,985 | Gross: $34.69M

This movie came out at a time people thought Rob Schneider was funny, so they kept sticking him in things. My my my did this blow. The 90's just weren't good to Stallone. And you wanna talk about Hams, Armond Assante? You should glaze him every Thanksgiving.

6. X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)

PG-13 | 104 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

58 Metascore

The human government develops a cure for mutations, and Jean Grey becomes a darker uncontrollable persona called the Phoenix who allies with Magneto, causing escalation into an all-out battle for the X-Men.

Director: Brett Ratner | Stars: Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Famke Janssen

Votes: 541,020 | Gross: $234.36M

Brett Ratner, franchise killer. Again so much potential wasted. HOW do you screw up the Phoenix Saga, esp one so brilliantly set up for you by Bryan Singer? Watch this, and find out.

7. Superman Returns (2006)

PG-13 | 154 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

72 Metascore

Superman returns to Earth after spending five years in space examining his homeworld Krypton. But he finds things have changed while he was gone, and he must once again prove himself important to the world.

Director: Bryan Singer | Stars: Brandon Routh, Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth, James Marsden

Votes: 291,435 | Gross: $200.08M

Some people say this was unfairly bashed. Some say it was miscast. I agree, Kate Bosworth never was and will be Lois Lane. I would go so far as to say so was Kevin Spacey, playing Lex Luthor like a scenery chewing ham ala Gene Hackman, and we didn't need that for this version. (You could get away with that in the 80's). Brandon Routh - was I blinded by his extreme hotness? I don't know. But I will bow my head for James Marsden who got the shaft in not one but two superhero flicks in the same year. The gist of the diabolical scheme of the greatest mind of our time in this movie came straight out of a cracker jack box. Mr. Singer, I expect that from Uwe Boll, but you? For shame.

8. Ghost Rider (2007)

PG-13 | 110 min | Action, Fantasy, Thriller

35 Metascore

When motorcycle rider Johnny Blaze sells his soul to the Devil to save his father's life, he is transformed into the Ghost Rider, the Devil's own bounty hunter, and is sent to hunt down sinners.

Director: Mark Steven Johnson | Stars: Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Sam Elliott, Matt Long

Votes: 252,376 | Gross: $115.80M

I need a drink. Burning skulls = cool. I get it. What does not = cool, Nicholas Cage. Does he even show up on set anymore? Or do they just splice in work from his other films, plus CGI hair as needed? It will astonish you as you watch this nonsensical film, which plays like one long beer commercial, that the star actually has an Oscar.

9. Hulk (2003)

PG-13 | 138 min | Action, Sci-Fi

54 Metascore

Bruce Banner, a genetics researcher with a tragic past, suffers an accident that causes him to transform into a raging green monster when he gets angry.

Director: Ang Lee | Stars: Eric Bana, Jennifer Connelly, Sam Elliott, Josh Lucas

Votes: 278,666 | Gross: $132.18M

Ang Lee owes me money. I actually sat in a theater and watched this turd push itself out in front of my eyes. I sat in a packed theater with deflated hopes and wide eyes as I watch The Hulk fight - a cloud. Who - sanctions - this - @!^!

10. Fantastic Four (I) (2005)

PG-13 | 106 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

40 Metascore

A group of astronauts gain superpowers after a cosmic radiation exposure and must use them to oppose the plans of their enemy, Doctor Victor Von Doom.

Director: Tim Story | Stars: Ioan Gruffudd, Michael Chiklis, Chris Evans, Jessica Alba

Votes: 343,984 | Gross: $154.70M

I hated this movie. How miscast was Jessica Alba as Sue Storm? Julian McMahon did what he could as Dr.Doom I guess, but this was a turkey. I also want to add a tie for Silver Surfer which came out 2 years later, a sequel which was not better or worse, but sucked equally. Congratulations.

11. X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)

PG-13 | 107 min | Action, Sci-Fi

40 Metascore

The early years of James Logan, featuring his rivalry with his brother Victor Creed, his service in the special forces team Weapon X, and his experimentation into the metal-lined mutant Wolverine.

Director: Gavin Hood | Stars: Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds, Danny Huston

Votes: 530,875 | Gross: $179.88M

This one hurts. After the intergalactic train wreck that was X3 didn't we all need this to be good, thus salvaging the series. Alas, not even a naked Hugh Jackman could stop this movie from going nowhere.

12. The Punisher (1989)

R | 89 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

63 Metascore

When Frank Castle's family is murdered by criminals, he wages war on crime as a vigilante assassin known only as The Punisher.

Director: Mark Goldblatt | Stars: Dolph Lundgren, Louis Gossett Jr., Jeroen Krabbé, Kim Miyori

Votes: 25,820

Six dollars and a Beer must have been how Dolph was paid to do this. Because there was no budget. I would have liked to use the excuse that Superhero movies couldn't be as violent as the Punisher series, but didn't someone get beat up, shot, thrown through a window and fell threw a glass ceiling while on fire in Action Jackson which came out a year before this? Poor Dolph.

13. Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987)

PG | 90 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

24 Metascore

The Man of Steel crusades for nuclear disarmament and meets Lex Luthor's latest creation, Nuclear Man.

Director: Sidney J. Furie | Stars: Christopher Reeve, Gene Hackman, Margot Kidder, Jackie Cooper

Votes: 52,764 | Gross: $15.68M

As an 80's baby, I can't tell you how many times I watched this as a kid. And each time it sucked. Three already suffered from a go no where plot and an unnecessary Richard Pryor. Here we go again with a Luthor over the top scheme when he steals Superman's hair to create his polar opposite in a blond, hot, straight out of Rocky Horror Villain complete with gold Lee Press On Nails to DESTROY SUPERMAN.

14. Masters of the Universe (1987)

PG | 106 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

35 Metascore

The heroic warrior He-Man battles against the evil lord Skeletor and his armies of darkness for control of Castle Grayskull.

Director: Gary Goddard | Stars: Dolph Lundgren, Frank Langella, Meg Foster, Billy Barty

Votes: 44,335 | Gross: $17.34M

80's cheese to the extreme. Since when did He-Man need to rip off Star Wars? Dolph Lundgren looks the part. Frank Langella actually overhams (again my word) Gene Hackman's Luthor as Skeletor. He's like a cross between the Grinch, Darth Vader and Jafar from Aladdin. I hope if they ever remake this they decide not to have He-Man on Earth trying to save a chicken shack waitress, even if it is Courtney Cox

15. The Punisher (2004)

R | 124 min | Action, Crime, Drama

33 Metascore

An undercover FBI agent becomes a vigilante and sets out to unleash his wrath upon the corrupt businessman who slaughtered his entire family at a reunion.

Director: Jonathan Hensleigh | Stars: Thomas Jane, John Travolta, Samantha Mathis, Laura Harring

Votes: 170,627 | Gross: $33.81M

ugh. Was John Travolta wearing his 'Swordfish' wig in this? It tried to do something, it just didn't get there. The movie not the wig. Thomas Jane was miscast here, and did I not see a blond Kevin Nash in here for reasons only the cosmos are aware of? Puff puff pass on this one.

16. Red Sonja (1985)

PG-13 | 89 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

35 Metascore

The fearless warrior Red Sonja sets out to avenge her family's murder and rid her kingdom from the tyrannical rule of evil Queen Gedren.

Director: Richard Fleischer | Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Brigitte Nielsen, Sandahl Bergman, Paul L. Smith

Votes: 44,909 | Gross: $6.95M

This is what happens when you marry Sly Stallone - you can make crappy movies too! Bad acting, bad script - Bad Sonja.

17. Steel (1997)

PG-13 | 97 min | Action, Adventure, Crime

28 Metascore

A scientist for the military turns himself into a cartoon-like superhero when a version of one of his own weapons is being used against enemies.

Director: Kenneth Johnson | Stars: Shaquille O'Neal, Annabeth Gish, Judd Nelson, Richard Roundtree

Votes: 15,075 | Gross: $1.71M

Do I even need to say anything?

18. Supergirl (1984)

PG | 124 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

41 Metascore

After losing a powerful orb, Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin, comes to Earth to retrieve it and instead finds herself up against a wicked witch.

Director: Jeannot Szwarc | Stars: Helen Slater, Faye Dunaway, Peter O'Toole, Mia Farrow

Votes: 24,031 | Gross: $13.60M

Did Faye Dunaway still think she was playing Joan Crawford in this? Female superheroes have had zero luck at the box office. This movie is lame.

19. Vampirella (1996 Video)

R | 82 min | Action, Fantasy, Horror

Adam, a descendant of the Van Helsings, works for PURGE, a paramilitary group dedicated to hunting vampires. He teams up with the alien Vampirella in order to locate and deal with their common enemy, Vlad.

Director: Jim Wynorski | Stars: Talisa Soto, Roger Daltrey, Richard Joseph Paul, Brian Bloom

Votes: 1,687

I can't. I don't know if this was supposed to go to theaters and the execs said straight to dvd or what. But this movie is an abomination. Middle School students with a web camera could make a better movie.

20. Tank Girl (1995)

R | 104 min | Action, Comedy, Sci-Fi

46 Metascore

A girl is among the few survivors of a dystopian Earth. Riding a war tank, she fights against the tyranny of a mega-corporation that dominates the remaining potable water supply of the planet.

Director: Rachel Talalay | Stars: Lori Petty, Ice-T, Naomi Watts, Don Harvey

Votes: 34,791 | Gross: $4.06M

What happened to Lori Petty? She's like the Joyce DeWitt of the 90's. Somewhere between Mad Max and Sailor Moon there is this movie.

21. Solomon Kane (2009)

R | 104 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

48 Metascore

A ruthless mercenary renounces violence after learning his soul is bound for hell. When a young girl is kidnapped and her family slain by a sorcerer's murderous cult, he is forced to fight and seek his redemption slaying evil.

Director: M.J. Bassett | Stars: James Purefoy, Max von Sydow, Rachel Hurd-Wood, Pete Postlethwaite

Votes: 76,433

What in the Van Helsing/Willow hell is this mess? I guess this movie had a bunch of problems getting a theater release and I saw why.

  • LAME

22. Jonah Hex (2010)

PG-13 | 81 min | Action, Drama, Fantasy

33 Metascore

The U.S. military makes a scarred bounty hunter with warrants on his own head an offer he cannot refuse: in exchange for his freedom, he must stop a terrorist who is ready to unleash Hell on Earth.

Director: Jimmy Hayward | Stars: Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, John Malkovich, Michael Fassbender

Votes: 61,821 | Gross: $10.54M

Honestly, I couldn't finish this. I left around the fifteen minute mark. They montage the origin story like it's Jonah Hex 3 or something. Watch at your own risk.
