Julio Torres is crediting Ryan Gosling for being a “world-builder” of a comedic actor.
The “Problemista” writer/director/star told Entertainment Weekly that Gosling had more than a few sketch ideas when he returned to host “SNL.” Torres previously worked as a “Saturday Night Live” writer, and also returned with a skit per Gosling’s request to follow-up their viral “Papyrus” sequence parodying the font used in James Cameron’s “Avatar.” And much like the “Avatar” franchise itself, Gosling had a vision for making multiple installments of the “Papyrus” sketch.
“With no Ryan Gosling, there’s no ‘Papyrus 1,’ and there’s no ‘Papyrus 2,’” Torres said. “The first one was this sort of throwaway joke I made that he really latched on to. He was like, ‘Oh, I think maybe there’s an idea there,’ and I was like, ‘I really don’t think so.’ I didn’t tell him that,...

There are movies that make you want one thing more than anything else: for whatever's happening on the screen to end as quickly as possible.
Reddit users selected popular movies that made them want just that.
1. Saltburn, 2023
In 2020, Emerald Fennell made her debut with the tragicomedy Promising Young Woman. The movie won her an Academy Award for Original Screenplay and gave endless opportunities to create her next project – Saltburn, a rip-off of The Talented Mr. Ripley.
The structure of the movie begins to fall apart in the middle as Oliver "skillfully" (actually clumsily) begins to work his way to the top. Many viewers positioned the movie as one of the most scandalous of the year – Saltburn undoubtedly shocks with some scenes (we feel sorry for every cemetery worker who's seen it), but seasoned viewers were tired of its extreme predictability.

Return of the Jedi serves as the epic conclusion to George Lucas’ sacred original trilogy, which is revered for its cinematic brilliance even today. The film not only delivers the kind of visual spectacle one expects from a Star Wars film, but also provides a resolution to several plot threads and character arcs in a compelling fashion.
A deleted scene from Return of the Jedi shows Darth Vader reaching out to Luke through the Force.
However, all the fluency of the film could have been desecrated had Lucas decided to keep one scene that was thankfully deleted. The scene features a brief interaction between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker, through the use of the Force. However, the context and placement of the scene would have almost disrupted everything that Return of the Jedi executes successfully, and here is why.

The Star Wars franchise is probably one of the most influential and talked about series since its inception by George Lucas back in 1976. With Jon Favreau currently serving as the showrunner of The Mandalorian, there are bound to be differences in opinions.
With the popularity of Pedro Pascal’s The Mandalorian, several fans debated what exactly makes a person Mandalorian. To clear things up, Favreau had the perfect explanation for why Boba Fett (a popular bounty hunter) is not considered a Mandalorian even though he looks like a Mandalorian.

The original Star Wars films changed the landscape of sci-fi films, being a blockbuster franchise that contained sensible storytelling mixed with impressive sci-fi elements. George Lucas pushed the boundaries of the genre and narrated the lives of the relatable Rebels who fought against the totalitarian Empire that threatened their existence.

Another master in the sci-fi- genre is none other than James Cameron, having made iconic sci-fi films such as Aliens and the Terminator franchise. When they came together to discuss the allegory behind the characters of the Star Wars world, they both connected on how the conflict between the Resistance and the Empire mirrors real-life wars including the Vietnam War.

A new image from Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus has been released (via USA Today), and it gives us another look at one of the movie's Xenomorphs as it bares its terrifying metallic teeth
A few subtle changes aside, the titular creature has pretty much remained the same since it first debuted in Ridley Scott's original classic, and it doesn't look like Romulus is going to alter the design to any great extent.
Check out the new image below, along with a recent video clip of one of the movie's practical Facehuggers.

Despite having lost three of her shipmates to an alien invader she doesn’t understand, despite learning that her shipmate and science officer Ash (Ian Holm) is an android, despite nearly getting killed when Ash tried to shove a porn mag down her throat, it’s something else that truly disturbs Ripley in Alien. It’s the two words she saw in a message from her employer: “crew expendable”
With those two words, Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) realizes that she’s at the bottom of a food chain, and not just because there’s a bloodthirsty Xenomorph on board. Never one to portray businesses or anyone with power in a favorable light, Alien director Ridley Scott took writers Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett’s idea about a haunted house movie set in space and turned it into a screed against the ruling classes.

Well, get ready to witness the magic of ‘Lion King’ in a whole new way as Mufasa: The Lion King’s first teaser trailer was recently dropped (April 29). And we got to learn that Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda is in charge of the soundtrack for the live-action animated prequel to The Lion King.
The songwriter-actor, 44, composed the music for a number of films and TV shows, including Moana and Encanto, to refer a few. Not to mention making physical appearances in Mary Poppins Returns, 200 Cartas, and other flicks.

Taylor Sheridan’s neo-western drama series Yellowstone starring Kevin Costner in the lead, became a runaway success with audiences and critics thanks to the actor-turned-writer’s sharp screenplay and story. Encouraged by the reception, the Veronica Mars star went on to create two prequels to the series namely 1883 and 1923, which traced the ancestry of the Duttons and the Yellowstone ranch.

Stellar Blade is the latest PlayStation 5 exclusive and it was a passion project from South Korean game developers at Shift Up. Director Hyung-Tae Kim had a clear vision for the company’s first major console game and wanted an epic title to accompany it.
The original title was quite simpler but what the director came up with has a deep mythology behind it. An ambitious video game deserves an equally ambitious title and it also sounds a lot better compared to Project Eve.

To say the Terminator timeline is pretty confusing at this point would be an understatement. The franchise, created with the release of James Cameron's seminal 1984 effort "The Terminator," has since been softly rebooted, retconned, and generally mishandled by successive generations of studios and filmmakers. So twisted is the saga's internal timeline that watching the "Terminator" movies in any kind of coherent order has become a challenge not unlike trying to destroy the T-800 himself.
Prior to the release of 2019's "Terminator: Dark Fate," things seemed to be looking up. With the help of James Cameron on producing duties, director Tim Miller decided to forget the three lackluster films that followed the modern classic that is 1991's "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" and simply pick up where that stellar entry in the franchise left off. Unfortunately, when "Dark Fate" debuted we were treated to yet another generic action blockbuster that put...

PlayStation fans are starting to pick up on the company’s plan to acquire Shift Up, the developer behind Stellar Blade. The grounds for refunding its latest exclusive have raised some eyebrows from observant members of the community.
Theorists believe that Sony wants this passion project to fail and let the developers cave in and surrender to its rule. This wild theory is a little far-fetched but probable to assert dominance in the industry.
Fans Claim PlayStation Wants Stellar Blade to Fail to Acquire Shift Up PlayStation could be sabotaging Stellar Blade for mischievous reasons.
The gaming community is full of conspiracy theorists. In the wake of the launch of the latest Sony exclusive, the company has offered fans the opportunity to refund the game if they claim the reason was false advertising.
Sony never gives refunds this is 100% a setup to make Shift Up fail so they can buy them and control the IP.

With films like The Shining and 2001: A Space Odyssey, Stanley Kubrick’s legacy will live on for centuries to come. During his life and even after his death in 1999, he’s widely considered one of the greatest filmmakers to have ever graced the film industry with his talent. But even a man of his caliber had to have been a fan of someone, and that “someone” for Stanley Kubrick was none other than James Cameron.
Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980)
James Cameron has been responsible for helming some of the most unforgettable and successful films in Hollywood. Therefore, it makes sense that Stanley Kubrick would be in awe of some of his work, and the feeling was mutual between the directors. When James Cameron decided to give himself a birthday present by meeting Stanley Kubrick, he was shocked to learn just how much of a True Lies fan he was.

If you have Hulu (or Disney Star in Canada), you might have noticed that Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later is no longer available. Indeed, Disney lost the rights to the independently financed original film, with them now only owning the rights to the Searchlight-financed sequel, 28 Weeks Later. That’s why you can’t find it on streaming sites and why the Blu-ray Disc is out of print. Sony now owns the rights to the film, with it being part of the package they acquired when they bought the rights to finance the upcoming Danny Boyle/ Alex Garland sequel, 28 Years Later. So, presumably, Sony will be reissuing the film in the near future, and there’s a chance that when they do, it’ll look much better than it ever did before. But why?

Stanley Kubrick was a peculiar man and so it’s really no wonder that his list of favorite films is so diverse. There are works by Welles and Chaplin and Bergman, but he also dug White Men Can’t Jump and The Jerk. Kubrick, too, apparently took to True Lies – so much so that he sat director James Cameron down and asked just how he pulled it off.
Back in the ‘90s, James Cameron decided to give himself a special 40th birthday present: the chance to meet Stanley Kubrick. Stellar Blade is now available worldwide exclusively for the PlayStation 5 and director Hyung-Tae Kim is doing his part to promote the ambitious title through interviews. The video game title can pique the gaming community’s interest, and Kim reveals how it came about.
The developers didn’t just put in a whole lot of thought about the gameplay, but also the title, which is very literal once it is translated. Kim has high hopes for the video game and gave it a worthy title that is on par with the quality of the overall product.

Movies being re-released is a new trend in Hollywood these days. And quite a few studios are getting in line to bring back their old gems for theatrical releases for the current audience. While it may have seemed fun for a while, things might get a bit out of hand soon.
Veronica Cartwright in the scene where the Xenomorph attacks Lambert in Ridley Scott’s Alien
Showings of old movies is not a new concept, with many theatres having shows of old movies from time to time. Similarly, the concept of drive-through or showings in the park is also not a new idea. But re-releasing movies by the studios is becoming a trend now.

Luca Guadagnino’s tennis relationship drama “Challengers” (Amazon MGM) opens Friday amidst chatter that it represents the rarest of films — a wide-release American sex sizzler, an erotically charged story with young actors with sexual impulses central to its plot.
The marketing forebears for “Challengers” are akin to movies that we’ve not seen in a long time like “Carnal Knowledge,” “Body Heat,” “Don’t Look Now,” and “Fatal Attraction.” These films, where sex can be sweaty and dangerous, were elevated by big stars who dared to play off their images. Other examples include Kevin Costner (“No Way Out”), Debra Winger (“An Officer and a Gentleman”), Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver (“The Year of Living Dangerously”), Jane Fonda (“Klute”), and Warren Beatty.
In the “Challengers” press tour, Zendaya (also a producer here) — with six of her previous seven live-action theatrical releases having domestic grosses of $100 million or more — took pains to dispel...

Stellar Blade is a new ambitious title for South Korean developers Shift Up and early reactions are indicating the game could be another winner for Sony Interactive Entertainment. PlayStation exclusives have been the gold standard for gaming for years and the company is now ready to share what they have with competitors.
However, the newest exclusive could pose a problem if it were ever ported to Xbox. The game features heavy PlayStation signatures that would be very awkward to see on a rival console.
Stellar Blade Can Be a Tricky Port for Xbox
Stellar Blade will be released on April 26, 2024, exclusively on the PlayStation 5.
PlayStation had a sudden shift in attitude towards sharing first-party titles with other platforms like PC, with Ghost of Tsushima Directors Cut being the latest one. All eyes are set on the new exclusive that will be released shortly and the community is already waiting for...

After a controversial path full of gamers who were not so happy with the way that this game presented its protagonist, Eve, Stellar Blade is finally ready for release. Its director discusses how some IPs, like this one, simply lack realism, and this is a good thing.
In a recent interview, Kim Hyung-tae, director of Shift Up, talked about how players need to be able to immerse themselves in the virtual world of the game without thinking it is realistic. They need to enjoy the experience a bit more without so many questions.

In today’s time, the film industry is coming out with movies left, right, and center. Thus, studios have to go out of their way to promote their films just to draw attention to them. We haven’t forgotten about Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and the incredible marketing that came before it, have we? And now, Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the latest entry into the list of films with unique promotion strategies.
Kingdom of the Planet of Apes (2024)
20th Century Fox seems to have adopted out-of-the-box thinking when it comes to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ marketing. On Wednesday, three characters from the upcoming movie were seen riding horses on a beach in San Francisco. Yes, you read that right. A video has been going viral showing three actors dressed up as apes taking their horses on a stroll by the beach.

Stellar Blade is looking to be a huge success for the South Korean game developer and Sony Interactive Entertainment. The ambitious atmosphere and design of the title were partly influenced by director Hyung-Tae Kim’s passion for James Cameron and his creative vision.
Despite working on different formats of storytelling, Cameron’s work was able to inspire other creatives like Kim and encouraged him to do something bold and daring. Shift Up leaped from mobile gaming to console and has much to prove to the gaming industry.

Pop quiz hot shot: What’s the best action movie of the past 20 or 30 years that never received a cinematic sequel? Nope, it’s not Speed. Is it Wanted? Nobody? The Accountant? How about Knight and Day or American Made? While the latter comes from director Doug Liman, we’d argue that the correct answer is Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Liman’s eminently watchable assassin thriller that continues to shine thanks to the explosive chemistry between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, two luminous movie stars who met and fell in love during production. Although the movie earned decent reviews and grossed nearly half a billion dollars worldwide, Mr. & Mrs. Smith never received an official sequel or cinematic spinoff and is often remembered for the juicy tabloid gossip surrounding its two superstars.
Yet, in 2024, a small-screen adaptation of Liman’s hit action flick has been produced by Amazon Prime Video,...

Amidst all the hype and excitement for Stellar Blade, the game’s director, Kim Hyung-tae, decided to send out a poignant message to his fans.
By now, it’s pretty well known that Kim Hyung-tae and his team put in a lot of work on this game. They had to go through a bunch of problems just to get this game made. Then came the criticisms regarding its protagonist, Eve, who apparently looks better than some people want video game protagonists to look nowadays. Warner Bros. For most directors, the art of filmmaking is an experience worth its weight in creative calories. For Alan Taylor, it was instead a harrowing one better left forgotten or chalked up as a bad dream. In hindsight, Thor: The Dark World wasn’t just a director’s worst nightmare but an agonizing ordeal for the audience who had to suffer through 112 minutes of a rotten piece of film that had no business existing within the realm of cinema.
Thor: The Dark World [Credit: Marvel Studios]In the later years, Taylor himself picked apart his Marvel project, proving there was no love lost between him and the Nordic God. But even Chris Hemsworth’s best efforts to preserve the sanctity of his leading role and Tom Hiddleston lending his Shakespearean expertise to the film’s drab plot couldn’t help make the final product any less painful for the Marvel fans.

James Cameron explores in detail how the Titanic sunk in his 1997 ultra-blockbuster "Titanic." It sideswiped an iceberg on its starboard side, tearing a hole in the hull. The ship began taking on water and the bow began to sink, lifting the stern into the air. The entire ship cracked in half like a Twix bar. The front half continued to sink, shooting to the ocean floor. The stern stuck was next to go, and -- because it was already half-submerged -- stuck straight up out of the water, almost vertically, like a tower. It, too, then slid beneath the waves. It took about two hours and 40 minutes for the ship to sink entirely.
Cameron compresses that sinking time into about an hour of film, careful to dramatize every detail of the ship's final moments. In the final phase of the ship's sinking -- when the stern was standing like a...

Jack and Rose’s tragic romance in Titanic is considered to be one of the greatest love stories. James Cameron’s epic disaster film was known for its amazing practical and visual effects but has become a modern classic due to Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet’s acclaimed performances as the leading couple.

One of these scenes saw Jack and Rose singing ‘Come Josephine’ after their Irish Dance at the third class section. Fans were quick to notice that the song was hummed by the duo at different points in the film, including its heartbreaking ending.

A proposed film studio planned for Buckinghamshire, UK has sparked controversy among locals, but Piranha II director James Cameron has provided his backing for the project.
A major new UK film studio, targeting a tract of land in Buckinghamshire, has been backed by filmmaker James Cameron.
Marlow Film Studios has proven to be a controversial project so far; its proposed location on a former quarry next to the A404 near the small town of Marlow has led local councillors to argue that the development would cause traffic problems and damage green belt land.
Buckinghamshire Council failed to reach a decision on the proposals in October 2023, meaning a pivotal vote on the project has been deferred to this year. Ahead of that vote, Cameron – known for the 1981 smash Piranha II: The Spawning and his screenplay for Rambo: First Blood Part II – has written to Buckinghamshire Council, recommending that it waves through the proposed studio.

A few days ago, James Cameron commented on using too many guns for The Terminator. The Avatar director said he would not do something like this in today’s time. James Cameron has backed a new UK film studio and said it could act as a base for his technology training center, but the £750M ($927M) Marlow Film Studios still requires a planning greenlight and is proving controversial in its local area.
According to the Financial Times, the triple Oscar-winner has written to Buckinghamshire Council in support of the plans in the past few weeks and said it could be a potential UK and European base and training centre for Lightstorm3D, a company Cameron has set up to develop tools and technology for movies.
Cameron said the 22.5% of global box office the UK delivered in 2023 will “grow as a result” of Marlow, which is in Buckinghamshire, South East England.
“But embracing that opportunity necessitates support and boldness in thinking,” the Ft reported Cameron wrote. “The next iteration of screen storytelling requires a purpose-built working space of exceptional quality, and trained professionals.

When Disney purchased the 20th Century Fox library in 2019, it caused some consternation among cineastes. The Fox catalog was vast and impressive, containing tons of indelible classics and even more titles waiting deep inside the studio's archive. 20th Century Fox was formed in 1935 and quickly became one of the "big five" studios that dominated the film industry for decades. Fox hadn't seen a shake-up this dramatic since 1985 when ultra-conservative media mogul Rubert Murdoch bought a controlling share of the company from Marvin Davis.
When Disney made its purchase, many film fans wondered if Fox's old classics would be made more widely available through the about-to-launch Disney+. When the streaming service debuted with a paltry 500 titles, cineastes were aghast. Why buy all those Fox titles if you're not going to distribute them?

TriStar Pictures believed they had the surest of things when they hired Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin to make the first Hollywood "Godzilla" flick. The duo had just delivered the biggest film of 1996 in "Independence Day," and appeared poised to become a blockbuster brand name on par with Steven Spielberg and James Cameron. Every studio in town wanted to make their next smash hit. But this is where the trouble started: TriStar wanted Emmerich and Devlin to make its next smash hit.
The 1998 iteration of "Godzilla" did not originate with Emmerich and Devlin. TriStar came very close to greenlighting it in 1994 with Jan De Bont (hot off the success of "Speed") directing a screenplay by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (who would eventually make their franchise fortune on the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series), which would've placed it in direct competition with "Independence Day" during the summer of 1996. So this all felt awfully fortuitous.

Happy Earth Day! Following Secrets of the Whales and Secrets of the Elephants, James Cameron’s latest natural history series, Secrets of the Octopus uncovers the lives of one of the most alienlike animals on the planet: the octopus. The three-parter, narrated by Paul Rudd, shows how these eight-armed creatures can shape-shift and reveals how intelligent and social they are through incredible footage, some showing behavior never before captured on film. National Geographic for Disney/Craig Parry One such behavior is a mating ritual, seen between “Scarlett,” a small day octopus at the Great Barrier Reef that’s featured across the episodes, and a male suitor. Dr. Schnell and other experts meet several amazing octopuses in places such as Canada’s Vancouver Island and Indonesia’s Lembeh Strait. But there’s a particularly touching relationship between Schnell and Scarlett — who seems to remember the ...

The Papyrus font is still haunting Ryan Gosling, who faced his fears once again in the new live sketch of Saturday Night Live released this weekend. The font was used in James Cameron’s mega-successful franchise, Avatar which released its sequel two years ago. The 2017 Papyrus SNL video was a huge hit, which showed Ryan Gosling’s Steven Wingdings, who is bothered by the fact that the movie used that basic font for its logo.

Few documentaries have been as genuinely shocking as director Andrew Jarecki’s 2015 true crime documentary series “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst.” Using existing media, reenactments and exclusive interview footage of Durst, who had agreed to be interviewed by Jarecki, the six-episode series investigated three unsolved murders in which Durst had been a suspect. It was a captivating spectacle that became a game-changing piece of art when, the day before the series finale aired on HBO, Durst was arrested for first-degree murder after being caught on a recording stating, “What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.”
Nearly a decade after winning the Emmy for Best Documentary or Nonfiction Series, Jarecki is back with “The Jinx — Part Two.” Premiering Sunday at 10/9c, the HBO series details the events of the next eight years, during which time Durst was tried and convicted of the murder...

It’s a good time to be an “Alien” fan. With Fede Álvarez‘s new franchise installment “Alien: Romulus” hitting theaters on August 16, and Noah Hawley‘s TV series for FX on the way next year, a franchise once thought dead is on the cusp of a potentially huge revival. Alvarez’s film already has Ridley Scott‘s and James Cameron‘s respective blessings, but Hawley’s series remains a bit of a mystery.

James Cameron's Aliens is, undisputedly, one of the greatest films ever made, and a perennial favourite of all at Empire. Small wonder then that Empire’s very own Ian Nathan, who has written books about the original Alien, elected to take the deepest of deep dives, directing new documentary Aliens Expanded. The film gets under the skin of all the movie’s iconic moments, including the classic ‘egg chamber’ scene, which you can hear Cameron himself describing the inspiration for in the exclusive clip below.
In a scene-by-scene analysis of the film, Aliens Expanded features interviews with many of the cast and crew, including Michael Biehn, Lance Henriksen, Carrie Henn and many more — not to mention Empire’s resident Aliens obsessive James Dyer.
“This is the opportunity of a lifetime,” says Nathan. “I have been gripped by Aliens from the day I saw it and it has never let me go.
