“We all stand together or we fall,” said “Dune” editor Joe Walker at this year’s Oscar nominees luncheon at the noisy Fairmont Hotel in Century City. Walker admitted that he was angry about the eight categories, including Editing, that will be aired in edited form on the Oscars after a taped ceremony before the live show. He was not alone; director nominees Jane Campion, Denis Villeneuve, and Steven Spielberg have publicly stated their disapproval.
“The Oscars are the Super Bowl for film nerds,” said “Mitchells vs. the Machines” producer Chris Miller. “It could be four hours long.”
Producer Lindsay Doran agreed that as far as she was concerned, length was no object. But she remembers — as do any number of people involved with Academy decision-making over the years, from ex-presidents Howard Koch and Sid Ganis to current president David Rubin — that these ABC discussions have gone on for decades.

Only five women have ever been nominated as a solo producer for their films at the Producers Guild Awards: Jan Chapman (“The Piano”), Niki Marvin (“The Shawshank Redemption”), Jane Scott (“Shine”), Cean Chaffin (“Gone Girl”) and now Amy Pascal (“Little Women”). And if Pascal prevails she’d be the first solo woman to do so and “Little Women” would be the only winner ever without a male producer.
It’s not exactly an equitable year for women at the PGA Awards, where only 9 of the 26 individual nominees are women — and that’s counting Emma Tillinger Koskoff twice as she’s nominated for both “Joker” and “The Irishman.” She’s joined by Pascal, Pippa Harris and Jayne-Ann Tenggren (“1917“), Jenno Topping (“Ford v Ferrari”), Jane Rosenthal (“Irishman”), Shannon McIntosh (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) and Kwak Sin Ae (“Parasite“). But that’s still up from last year when only 6 of the 31 nominated producers were women.

The third annual Glas Animation Festival (Global Animation Syndicate) in Berkeley got a major boost last weekend with the appearance of Phil Lord and Chris Miller (“The Lego Movie”). The duo discussed success, failure, and how they’re pushing boundaries with “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (December 21), which they are producing. They also announced that they are taking executive producer credit on “Solo: A Star Wars Story” (May 25), which they noisily departed as directors last year after being replaced by director Ron Howard.
Although they credited their successful partnership with being “horrifically relentless and willing to change things to continually improve the project,” Lord and Miller ran into irreconcilable differences over the particular production demands of the “Star Wars” franchise.
“We are very proud of our many contributions to the film. In light of the creative differences on ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story,’ we have elected to take an executive producer credit on the film,...

New Year’s resolutions are a time to work towards a transformation of your body and/or your life. To honor these goals, this month we’re going to look at transformative roles in film. This week we look at some prominent examples of actors playing characters that are much younger than the actors’ actual age.
It’s one thing to mentally prepare to play a character in a movie or a play. It’s another thing to physically transform yourself in order to better identify with the role. Some transformations are only skin deep; extensive makeup or prosthetics may be sufficient to pull of the necessary look. Other transformations are more involved; many actors may take part in weeks, if not months, of preparations for a role. This can include intense training, specialized diets, and exhaustive exercise routines. The end result of an actor going through such a transformation...

Director Marc Webb has been especially busy since making two Amazing Spider-Man movies for Sony, released in 2012 and 2014. He has a new movie called Gifted, starring Chris Evans, opening in select cities this Friday, and another one called The Only Living Boy in New York coming out this August.
On top of that, he's also been developing a lot of television shows as executive producer on the Emmy-winning Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and the TV version of Limitless.
When speaking with Webb about Gifted recently, Lrm asked him about other projects he's working on.
Besides finishing up Only Living Boy and doing a television pilot with Alan Cumming called Instinct, Webb told us that he's in the early stages of developing a movie with Working Title Films called Three Bags Full.
That would be Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Story, Leonie Swann's 2006 novel about a flock of Irish sheep who set...

There was always a chance for the best picture category at the 2017 Academy Awards to feature solid representation for female producers and, with the nominations official, the numbers are in. Turns out there are five of the nine films in this year’s top category with women behind it — but how does that stand up to the rest of Oscar history?
As mentioned above, there are five out of the total nine films in the best picture category this year that took some girl power to get made. There’s Hell or High Water (Carla Hacken and Julie Yorn), Hidden Figures (Donna Gigliotti and Jenno Topping), Lion (Angie Fielder), Manchester by the Sea (Kimberly Steward and Lauren Beck), and finally Moonlight (Adele Romanski and Dede Gardner). This leaves out Arrival, Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, and La La Land as...

"The Island and the Whales" (working title)
Directore/Producer: Mike Day
The pilot whale hunters of the Faroe Islands believe that hunting is vital to their way of life, but when a local professor makes a grim discovery about the effects of marine pollution, and the seabirds populations collapse, environmental changes threaten to change the community and their way of life forever.
Mike Day is a Scottish director and producer. Formerly a lawyer in London and the Middle East he founded Intrepid Cinema in 2009 before heading out into the North Atlantic to make his previous film. His debut documentary "The Guga Hunters of Ness" broadcast on the BBC in 2011 and screened at festivals internationally to critical acclaim. It was while at sea in the Atlantic that he met a group of Faroese sailors, leading to his next film. Mike was listed as one of '10 Filmmakers to Watch' by Filmmaker Magazine, he was one of Edn's ’12 for the Future 2012’, and is supported by the Scottish Documentary Institute's Docscene programme. Intrepid Cinema also has two other feature documentaries in development.
"The Road From Hainan"
Director/Producer: Nanfu Wang
State surveillance. Harassment. Imprisonment. Human rights activist Ye Haiyan, Aka Sparrow, knew she faced these risks when she went to Hainan Province to seek justice for six elementary school girls who were sexually abused by their principal. But the scale and intensity of the government's reaction surprised even the most seasoned activists across China.
"The Road From Hainan" follows Sparrow as she was chased from town to town by local governments, national secret police, and even her own neighbors. Nanfu Wang is a documentary filmmaker based in New York. Originally from a remote village in China, Wang overcame poverty and lack of access to formal secondary education and went on to earn graduate degrees in communications and documentary film from universities in China and the United States. Her work often features the stories of marginalized or mistreated people, from Chinese blood donors stricken with HIV after being issued used needles by the government to the left-behind children of migrant laborers. During the production of her first full-length documentary, Wang lived on the streets of Miami with a homeless former drug dealer who relied on the kindness of strangers for his survival. Wang’s short films have been distributed on many platforms and translated into several languages, and she continues to seek out and tell the stories of people who have been ignored by their societies.
"Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four"
Director/Producer: Deborah Esquenazi
"Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four" excavates the nightmarish persecution of Elizabeth Ramirez, Cassandra Rivera, Kristie Mayhugh, and Anna Vasquez — four Latina lesbians wrongfully convicted of allegedly gang-raping two little girls in San Antonio, Texas. The film also unravels the sinister interplay of mythology, homophobia and prosecutorial fervor which led to this modern day witch hunt during the 'Satanic Sexual Abuse Panic' of the late-80's and early-90's in the United States.
Deborah S. Esquenazi is an Austin, Texas-based documentary film and radio producer, instructor, and journalist. Her in-progress documentary feature, "Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four," has received international attention for its investigation into this controversial criminal case, and has been mentioned in Forbes Magazine, New York Times, Texas Observer, Vice Magazine, among others. Her film and radio documentaries have been funded by Chicken & Egg Pictures, Paul Robeson Fund for Independent Media, Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program | John D. and Catherine T.
MacArthur Foundation Initiative, Humanities Texas, Astraea Global Arts Fund, and many others.

Quirky is possibly the best word to describe Emma Thompson‘s BAFTA Screenwriters’ Lecture, hilariously delivered tonight in London. It included a physical demonstration of her writing process; pearls of wisdom shared with the filmmaker attendees; and an anecdote about how a period sketch she wrote featuring a Victorian-era virgin encountering a penis led to her penning Sense And Sensibility.
The event, a Thompson-directed variation on a regular series of screenwriter conversations, continued a mini-season of high-wattage names visiting the British Academy, which started with James Schamus on Thursday and David Fincher on Friday. And Thompson tapped her acting and sketch comedy background to give the sell-out crowd a good show.
She was already on stage as the audience started filing in, dressed down in denim overalls and a thick navy coat so that few noticed her at first. She sat barefoot at a tiny writing desk, and in between scribbling on a notepad,...

It was only a matter of time until the BBC broadcast images of Emma Thompson's downstairs lavatory. The combination of her larky sense of humour and love of a theatrical flourish made it somehow inevitable. And so last month it came to pass. The actress, having been overlooked for an Oscar nomination, was televised at her home receiving a "Mark"; a golden statuette in the likeness of the Observer's film critic, which was offered in recognition of her screen portrayal of the author of Mary Poppins, Pamela Travers.

Had a chance last week to talk with Lindsay Doran producer of the Oscar winning Sense & Sensibility and the current Nanny McPhee Returns about a bunch of different topics. As a person who does a lot of interviews, I found Lindsay's answers and insights to be very, very interesting. Hope you do too. Her bio is at the end. Women & Hollywood: You grew up a child of Hollywood. What was it like? Lindsay Doran: I was born very late in my father's life. He was 55. He was a studio executive for nearly 50 years working on films like Sunset Blvd. My mother typed scripts for Preston Sturgess. My brother was the publicist on 2001: A Space Odyssey. So it was all around me and what I saw was people who loved it and people who did...
