The Movie: "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!"
Where You Can Stream It: The Roku Channel, Plex
The Pitch: John Waters was once quoted as saying that Russ Meyer's 1965 violence epic, "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!," was "beyond a doubt, the best movie ever made. It is possibly better than any film that will be made in the future." It's difficult to argue with him. "Pussycat" is, in many ways, the purest distillation of cinema. On what might be its most basic level, films serve as a reflection of our own prurient desires reflected back at us. They exist to indulge our appetites for life's simplest, most lascivious things. We want to see violence. We want salacious, soap opera-like stories and brazen,...

We recently reviewed Bae Wolf from writer/director David Axe, a filmmaker who got his start in features writing The Theta Girl, from director Christopher Bickel who – unlike Axe – hasn’t followed up that 2017 film with any further features. Instead Bickel has, in the intervening years, spent his time making shorts and music videos. Now however Bickel makes his return to filmmaking by directing and co-writing Bad Girls, a girl-gang homage to the films of Russ Meyer and Jack Hill.
Bad Girls follows three “troubled” women – Val (Morgan Shaley Renew), Mitzi (Senethia Dresch), and Carolyn (Shelby Lois Guinn) – who, after spending their youth in and out of detention halls and jail, work together at a strip club. However the...

Exclusive: “I try to think big!’ says Tura Satana’s Varla in Russ Meyer’s cult classic Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill!, and that’s exactly what Norman Reedus and AMC Studios plan to do.
The Walking Dead star’s bigbaldhead production company and AMC Studios are developing a small-screen series version of Meyer’s 1965 flick starring Satana, Lori Williams, Susan Bernard, Paul Trina, Haji and Stuart Lancaster, I have learned. The project has the full backing of the Meyer estate.
Still in the early stages, the project comes under the two-year first-look deal Reedus and his banner inked with the studio in September last year. Utilizing the movie’s tale of a trio of badass go-go dancers on a cash-fueled rampage through the desert, Faster Pussycat the TV show aims to pay homage to the original but also go beyond the fast cars and karate kicks to home in on...

There’s a reason that Tura Satana was an impressive and kind of scary person during her peak years, and only a part of it has to do with the tale that’s told of what happened when she was a young girl. The whole story of her being gang-raped when she was 10 is horrible, but the idea that she went on to train in the martial arts and eventually get even with those that raped her over the next fifteen years following the incident is hard for a lot of people to believe. Whether it’s entirely truthful or not is

Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond’s lavish movie boils down to a dirty party joke, but they struck gold just the same. Audiences flocked to see Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine reunited in a fantasy Parisian red light district, in a show that looks like Disneyland for fans of Playboy cartoons.

Russ Meyer’s Faster Pussycat Kill Kill! screens Wednesday, August 2nd at 8pm at Schlafly Bottleworks Restaurant and Bar (7260 Southwest Ave.- at Manchester – Maplewood, Mo 63143) as part of Webster University’s Award-Winning Strange Brew Film Series. The film will be followed by an interview with its star Tura Satana that was conducted on-stage at the Way Out Club in St. Louis in October of 2008. Admission is $5
In 1953 Playboy magazine debuted and one of its first centerfold photographers was Russ Meyer, who had been a combat photographer in WWII. Meyer had a knack, and a passion, for photographing gorgeous, busty women and felt that the gals in the nudist camp movies that were popular in the ‘50s were far too plain-looking for his tastes. In 1959, Meyer scraped together $24,000 and made The Immoral Mr. Teas, a quaint, colorful, and cartoonish movie about a nerdy fellow whose life is constantly interrupted by...

A dream came true for John Waters in “Hagsploitation,” Episode 6 of FX’s “Feud: Bette and Joan.” For decades, the iconic director has been a vocal fan of William Castle, the B-movie king of showmanship whose promotional stunts remain legendary. In fact, “I wish I were William Castle,” Waters wrote in the 1986 collection “Crackpot.”
And thus, Ryan Murphy asked Waters to appear in “Hagsploitation,” which opens with Waters as Castle, introducing an axe-wielding Joan Crawford (played by Jessica Lange) during a promotional tour for the 1964 film “Straight-Jacket.”
“It was an honor to be asked to do it, because I’m such a fan of William Castle,” Waters said about the unannounced cameo. “I had to keep the secret for so long because we shot it a long time ago. And the secret kept. I was surprised, because there were 100 extras there.”

Great news for Tura Satana fans: a documentary about the legendary actress, vedette and exotic dancer is in the works.
Satana became a cult icon after playing Varla — the leader of a women’s gang who kills a young man with her bare hands and helps kidnap his girlfriend — in the 1965 Russ Meyer’s cult classic “Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!”

Off screen, the Japanese-born actress lead a turbulent live. As a child, she was interned at WWII Japanese relocation camp Manzanar, in California. Then, she moved with her family to Chicago, where she was the victim of a racially-motivated rape by a group of teenagers before her tenth birthday.

A lot of water, legal and otherwise, has passed under the bridge since Paul Reubens last donned the signature crisply tailored gray suit and red bow tie of his indisputably great comic creation, Pee-wee Herman, for a feature-length comedy. His previous Pee-wee feature, Big Top Pee-wee, debuted during the summer of 1988, 28 years ago, and that picture was hardly anyone’s idea of a worthy follow-up to the delirious and hilarious Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985)-- it certainly wasn’t one I held too dear. When I saw Pwba the night it opened, I was actually admonished by fellow audience members and even the management of a Medford, Oregon movie theater for my hysterics. But though I approached the Big Top three years later with much eagerness, I left it feeling that Pee-wee had somehow ended up getting twisted into a formula that traded that gray suit in for something more akin to a straitjacket.

'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' 2015: Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer. 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' movie is a domestic box office bomb: Will it be saved by international filmgoers? Directed by Sherlock Holmes' Guy Ritchie and toplining Man of Steel star Henry Cavill and The Lone Ranger costar Armie Hammer, the Warner Bros. release The Man from U.N.C.L.E. has been a domestic box office disaster, performing about 25 percent below – already quite modest – expectations. (See also: “'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' Movie: Bigger Box Office Flop Than Expected.”) This past weekend, the $80 million-budget The Man from U.N.C.L.E. collected a meager $13.42 million from 3,638 North American theaters, averaging $3,689 per site. After five days out, the big-screen reboot of the popular 1960s television series starring Robert Vaughn and David McCallum has taken in a mere $16.77 million. For comparison's sake:...

In his own words, the intended audience for Russ Meyer’s films was “some guy…in the theatre with semen seeping out of his dick.” His work in the sexploitation subgenre is credited with bringing nudity and sleaze into the American cinematic mainstream and his gravestone declares him ‘King of the Nudies.’ And yet his magnum opus has been reclaimed as a work of female empowerment, a subversive text that has inspired music videos by the Spice Girls and Janet Jackson, lent its name to a New York women’s bar and even been referenced in Xena and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. A rousing cocktail of bombs and bikinis, topped with a slick 70s score, The Doll Squad (ask Seduce and Destroy) was produced, directed, written and edited by low-budget exploitation mogul Ted V. Mikels, the man responsible for The Corpse Grinders (1971) and Blood Orgy of the She-Devils (1974).
Pre-dating the likes of Charlies Angels (which was clearly influenced by Mikels’ feature), the film sees a group of female special agents brought together by the CIA for a special mission after a space shuttle launch is sabotaged by the megalomaniacal Eamon O’Reilly. The titular Doll Squad are tasked with bringing down O’Reilly and his private army which has warned that if its demands are not met it will strike again. Closing in...

Cinematic Titanic is the live movie riffing show from the creator and original cast of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and they’re bringing their show to St. Louis this Saturday October 12th for what they’re calling their ‘Farewell Tour’ which I guess means this is the last time you’ll be able to see these guys riff on movies. Like MST3K, the show was created by Joel Hodgson and features the same team that first brought the Peabody award winning cult-classic series to life: Trace Beaulieu (Crow, Dr. Forrester), J. Elvis Weinstein (Tom Servo, Dr. Erhardt), Frank Conniff (TV’s Frank), and Mary Jo Pehl (Pearl Forrester), Cinematic Titanic continues the tradition of riffing on ‘the unfathomable’, ‘the horribly great’, and the just plain ‘cheesy’ movies from the past.

Actors aren’t the characters they play (duh!), but a lot of times we pretend they are. Whoever they happen to be off-screen can dictate the lens through which we experience them on-screen. In The Canyons, Paul Schrader’s raunchy and malevolent dark-side-of-l.A. thriller soap opera, Lindsay Lohan, in troweled-on ’60s makeup (think Elizabeth Taylor meets Tura Satana), plays a Los Angeles hanger-on named Tara who always seems a thin step away from falling apart. The character, in many respects, is worlds away from Lohan herself, yet we can’t help but notice the similarities. Both exude attitude and vulnerability in equal measure,...

Patton Oswalt has commissioned a series of action figures that blends the world of Star Wars with the look of Russ Meyer movies, and the result is pretty awesome. The creator of the figures is Sillof, an inspiration for Oswalt’s character in Jason Reitman’s Young Adult, and the man also responsible for combining Star Wars with the steampunk and samurai worlds, to name a few.
The Oswalt-commissioned series which is called Faster, Empire! Strike! Strike! (after Meyer’s classic Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!), is not for sale, but you can see the whole series here.
Oswalt posted a short essay on his site about the figures here. Here is an excerpt:
It’s the Star Wars universe as interpreted by Russ Meyer. Busty, pneumatic amazons in all of the male roles, with one Li’l Abner-stlye lunkhead in the Princess Leia role. Cars and liquor and 60’s-style garage rock.

Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1965) Eve Productions Directed by: Russ Meyer Starring: Tura Satana, Haji, Lori Williams, Sue Bernard The Plot is Afoot! Varla, Rosie and Billy spend their days as gogo dancers for a night club, dancing for dollars in front of ogling screeching men. On their free time they unwind by relieving their aggression and break the law by murdering a street racer and kidnapping his girlfriend. When they meet an old man and his two unstable sons, they decide to make themselves at home in their old farm when Varla learns the old man may be hiding a large cache of money. The Damage: Russ Meyer was a man who loved breasts. He surely enjoyed the female form, but mostly he loved breasts. He fetishized them, worshipped them, and centered his entire career making films that idolized them in some form or another. Russ Meyer is one of...

Grindhouse Girls: Cinema’S Hardest Working Women is an "in-depth look at the infamous exploitation actresses of the 1970s and 80s and how their groundbreaking films reflected the societal changes occuring around them and influenced a generation of filmmaking, Grindhouse Girls profiles, celebrates, and tells the story of these fascinating women who took great risks to get ahead in their career, who stripped naked for the cameras, had their hair matted with stage blood, who took chances on directors that didn't have much money or means to create their outrageous visions. Women like Tura Satana, Pam Grier, and Sybil Danning maintain an aura of strength, fearless in the face of men and crime. There is no better time to acknowledge the actresses that gave us everything that most Hollywood actresses could not: sex, drugs, violence, shock, rock, and rebellion."

David and Goliath. Hamilton and Burr. Spinal Tap and mini Stonehenge?
The first two exist among the greatest showdowns in history. The latter is but a sampling of the greatest in film history as depicted in artist Scott Campbell’s collection; The Great Showdowns. Campbell, or Scott C. as he signs his work, has quickly risen as one of the most recognizable names in the expanding world of pop-art. Known for his simple style and distinctive characters, Scott C. has created a world of epic showdowns between some of films most unlikely (and often inanimate) characters.
Hollywood’s Gallery 1988, the worlds center of pop-arts emergence, has showcased many of Scott C’s works over the years with dedicated shows and entries into their popular Crazy 4 Cult collectives. Cinematic Titanic is the live feature-length movie riffing show from the creator and original cast of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Elvsi Weinstein (Tom Servo, Dr. Erhardt), Frank Conniff (TV.s Frank), and Mary Jo Pehl (Pearl Forrester). Cinematic Titanic continues the tradition of riffing on .the unfathomable., .the horribly great., and the just plain .cheesy. movies from the past. Cinematic Titanic is coming to St. Louis. The St. Charles Family Arena will be hosting Joel and the gang on Saturday, November 17th) starting at 7:30 (doors open at 6:30). The movie that will be riffed on this year is Ted V. Mikel.s 1973 classic Doll Squad starring the late Wamg muse Tura Satana.

No one can deny the supernatural allure of horror's ghostess with the mostest, so it's no surprise that Elvira's ample charms have sharpened up quite a few rock-and-rollers' axes (so to speak). Legendary Finnish gothic rock unit The 69 Eyes recently revealed that Elvira, as well as her immortal sisters-in-sinister Vampira and Tura Satana, were a huge inspiration for their darkly seductive songs... and now she's returning the favor by introducing their new music video for the sexy single “Red" from the band's upcoming tenth album X. “I was a member of the Elvira fan club ever since I saw her on the cover of Fangoria in the mid-'80s,” said frontman Jyrki69. “I had a life-size poster of her in the black lingerie in a coffin on my wall for years.” Jyrki said he's tempted to put the poster back up again, just to celebrate the voluptuous vamp's endorsement. “I...

Rue Morgue’s Festival of Fear, an event I used to attend before air travel got very expensive, starts this weekend. Their main guest of honor is the one, the only, John Carpenter. Justin Erickson who is part of Toronto’s Phantom City Creative has created one of the coolest posters for Carpenter fans. Not only is it an amazing print but it also saves us fanboys some space on the walls by having four of John Carpenter’s most iconic films in one poster that acts as the official poster for the Festival of Fear!
From Rue Morgue’s website:
The official Festival of Fear print is here, and it’s a beauty. Designed by Justin Erickson, the 18″ x 24″ screen print is part of a signed and numbered edition of 200, available at the Rue Morgue booth at FoF. (Printing by D&L Screen Printing.)

The Russ Meyer Show Featuring Kitten Natividad takes place in St. Louis this Friday, June 15th at The Way Out Club. Details at the end of this article.
Article by Jim Batts, Dana Jung, and Tom Stockman
Russell Albion “Russ” Meyer was born in California in 1922 and spent WWII as a combat photographer. In 1953 Playboy magazine debuted and Meyer was one of its first centerfold photographers. Meyer had a knack, and a passion, for photographing gorgeous, busty women and felt that the gals in the nudist camp movies that were popular in the ’50s were far too plain-looking for his tastes. In 1959, Meyer scraped together $24,000 and made The Immoral Mr. Teas, a quaint, colorful, and cartoonish movie about a nerdy fellow whose life is constantly interrupted by beautiful large-breasted women in various stages of undress. There was no sex in Meyer’s film and he made no pretense of presenting nudity as a lifestyle choice,...

Buxom beauty Kitten Natividad is known to movie buffs as the last of Russ Meyer’s busty starlets, having starred in the cult director’s final two films. Kitten’s untamed beauty, personal charm, sex appeal , and cartoonish 44-25-35 dimensions has left her image imprinted on the mind of many a young man who saw her in the Meyer films or her cameos in such mainstream fare as My Tutor (1983) and The Wild Life (1984). Kitten was also Meyer’s girlfriend the last fifteen years of his life and she appeared as a stripper at the bachelor party held by Sean Penn to celebrate his 1985 marriage to Madonna.
Francesca Natividad was born in 1948 in Juarez, Mexico, one of nine children. Her family moved to El Paso, Texas, when Kitten was 10 after her mom married a man from there. In 1969 she began stripping and got her first breast implants in Mexico...

Fifty years after her death, Marilyn Monroe has never been more popular. From "My Week With Marilyn" (now out on DVD) to the TV show "Smash," to a new photo book written by the daughter of the photographer credited with discovering the future superstar, Monroe is still as hot as she was in her heyday.
Susan Bernard's "Marilyn, Intimate Exposures" features previously unseen images of Marilyn taken by her father, Bruno Bernard, including the iconic photo of the blonde bombshell in the white halter dress on the set of "The Seven Year Itch."
Before she became an author, Bernard was famous in her own right: She was a Playboy Playmate and starred in the '60s cult classic, "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!"

The two most important things that can happen to you in a mainstream movie are being killed and having an orgasm. Sometimes in facial close-ups it's hard to tell one from the other. When Pauline Kael saw that wall poster in Italy saying "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," she sensed she was onto something.
I've recently seen two movies centering on orgasms. The most intense is Steve McQueen's "Shame," starring Michael Fassbender as a sex addict. I think I'll save my observations about that one for my review. Hardly less intense was Louis Malle's "Damage" (1992), about an affair between a man and his son's bride-to-be. It made an impression on me at the time, and I was scouting it for a possible Great Movie review. It reminded me how important orgasms can be in the cinema.

I’ve been collecting the condensed Super-8 Sound editions of movies for about 15 years now and am always thrilled when some odd title pops up for sale that I had no idea was ever released in the format. The Beast Must Die, The Klansman, and To The Devil A Daughter are a few of the titles that never appeared in the Castle Films (or any other) catalog, but I’ve managed to unearth, released on some obscure film labels (often in Europe – Grizzly, Star Crash, Hard Times, and Mandigo are other oddball titles I’ve found dubbed into German). I host the monthly Super-8 Movie Madness show at The Way Out Club here in St. Louis the first Tuesday of every month where I show about 14 of these films from my vast collection. The hard-drinking crowd of movie buffs always appreciates films with the cheesiest aesthetics and there are few movies cheesier than Astro Zombies.

Can women over 40 be awesome action heros like all those guys over 60 still are?
Amidst Sigourney Weaver's recent disappointing statements about thinking she's too old to be playing Ripley in any further Aliens franchise movies and the awesome news that Linda Hamilton may star in a Terminator 5 film, we've got our panties all fucked up because we've been debating how much we love action heroines, and how many of them are over 40 now. We don't think that's a bad thing - in fact, we think women over 40 are awesome action heroes and we think you do too. We think you'd be out in theaters in masses to see Ripley or Sarah Connor tear shit up once again, and so would we.
In a recent interview with Moviehole, filmmaker Justin Lin discussed the new Terminator movie he's producing, and seems to want Hamilton to reprise her role as the tough-as-nails freedom-fighter/mom Sarah Connor,...

I usually make a point of not commenting on movies that haven’t been made yet, regardless of how promising they may sound. Yet when I learned that director David O. Russell, coming off The Fighter, was in negotiations with Fox Searchlight over the possibility of directing a feature film based on the life of Russ Meyer, the eccentric king of ’60s and ’70s sexploitation B movies, I thought, “Wow, now that is a film I’d love to see!” It sounded like it could be the Ed Wood of sleaze, a celebration of the raw and vital trash underground of American filmmaking.

Modern exploitation films need to do two things simultaneously to work in today’s film culture: capture the feel of the genre while keeping the tongue tucked firmly in the cheek. Black Dynamite succeeded, and so did Bitch Slap. They took the elements from the genre that worked and updated them for today’s tastes. Sugar Boxx presents itself as another entry in this typically low-budget tradition, and it certainly manages to throw in some sex and violence. In fact, when it comes to reproducing the structural authenticity of the films – having poor writing, cinematography, and acting – Sugar Boxx hits the nail on the head. Unfortunately, it never offers enough violence or sex, as per the suggested serving size typical of the genre, and thus the ridiculously low standards in the main tenets of filmmaking have nothing to redeem them.

Actor best known for her role as a go-go dancer in Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!
The actor Tura Satana, who has died aged 72, lived a life as eventful as the plots of the lurid B-movies that made her a star. Almost 6ft tall and trained in martial arts, she specialised in a kind of tough charisma that has rarely been matched on screen.
She was best known for her role in the Russ Meyer sexploitation movie Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1965, tagline: "Superwomen! Belted, buckled and booted!"). As Varla, the leather-clad leader of a gang of thrill-seeking go-go dancers, Satana was given an opportunity by Meyer to perform her own stunts and choreograph fight scenes, as well as to adlib dialogue. She responded by channelling a kind of controlled rage, stating in an interview: "I took a lot of my anger that had been stored inside for many years and let it loose.
