Back in 2000, director Ridley Scott took us back to 180 Ad for Gladiator, which told the story of Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius (played by Russell Crowe), who is favored by Emperor Marcus Aurelius to be his successor because his own son, Commodus, is unfit to rule. Commodus disagrees, so he murders his father, has Maximus arrested, and has Maximus’s wife and son killed. While Commodus establishes himself as the new emperor, Maximus escapes from captivity – only to be captured again, this time by slavers who sell him off to become a gladiator. Soon he’s fighting in front of Commodus in Rome’s Colosseum… and it all builds up to Commodus challenging Maximus to a duel. Gladiator was a major box office success and racked up multiple Academy Award wins, including Best Picture. So there was already talk of a sequel in 2001, but it ended up taking more than...

Ever since Charlton Heston climbed out of a little rocket ship in the toxic waters of the Forbidden Zone, science fiction has never been the same. The film in which he starred was based on a Pierre Boulle novel, but by the time it reached the big screen, it felt like an epic cinematic version of The Twilight Zone (and it had the Rod Serling writing credit to prove it).
The ending of the film is still one of the all-time great “twists” in cinema history, birthing the first modern science fiction franchise. And it’s never let up since. When Wes Ball’s latest installment in this upside down universe, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, hits big screens this coming weekend, the series will have seen nearly a dozen films released over the span of about 60 years. It is said that good things come to those who wait. After making audiences wait for 24 years following his blockbuster Gladiator in 2000, Ridley Scott is back with a much awaited sequel to his Oscar-winning film which will release at the end of year in November 2024. A star-studded cast featuring Pedro Pascal, Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, and Joseph Quinn is adding further hype.
Russell Crowe in Gladiator
The film which was test-screened in Las Vegas, is already attracting a lot of attention and praise for Scott’s work. While a few significant scenes and the production design are predicted to leave audiences awestruck, there were three actors whose performances in the film were lauded according to initial rumors from the screening.

Missing Pedro Pascal already? We completely understand you – after 2023 literally became the year of big releases with the actor, 2024 seems painfully empty without him.
That's why we've collected the most anticipated projects with Pedro Pascal.
1. Gladiator II
Release Date: November 22, 2024
The filming of the sequel to Ridley Scott's cult epic, Gladiator II, was frozen due to the strikes, but now work on the set has been successfully completed.
Talk of a sequel circulated throughout Hollywood for more than twenty years after the first film's successful release, suggesting almost biblical and fantastic tales of battles in the afterlife.
As a result, Gladiator II moderated its ambitions: Lucius, the nephew of Commodus, played by Joaquin Phoenix in the first film, will be at the center of the story. As a boy, he was inspired by the exploits of the gladiator Maximus in the arena and will apparently follow in the footsteps of Russell Crowe’s character.

Joseph Quinn’s popularity increased following his scene-stealing role as Eddie in Stranger Things season 4. Before that, the actor had small roles in films like Overlord, and Hoard. He played Arthur Havisham in the BBC series Dickensian and Leonard Bast in Howards End. He is currently one of the rising stars whom people are excited about.
Joseph Quinn’s breakout role was in Stranger Things as Eddie Munson
Quinn landed his biggest role as he has been tapped in to play Johnny Storm/ Human Torch in the upcoming Fantastic Four film. In the current climate where the discourse around superhero movie fatigue has become notoriously popular, Quinn promised that his Fantastic Four film will be a unique Marvel film that will change that perception.

Fans of Ridley Scott’s Gladiator franchise must be rejoicing after the first footage from the much-anticipated sequel to the 2000 blockbuster was screened for CinemaCon goers last Thursday. An introduction from the director all the way from London was shown at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
Russell Crowe in Gladiator (2000)
With Paul Mescal in the lead, the movie promises to be “possibly more extraordinary than the first” as the veteran filmmaker pledges the second installment is worth the twenty-four years of waiting.
Gladiator 2’s First Footage Introduces Paul Mescal On The Lead
The footage exhibited the first look at Paul Mescal as Lucius, the nephew of Commodus and the son of Lucilla. The figure appeared astoundingly fit and fighting inside the arena against a man carried by a rhino and a herd of baboons. The character says:
“I remember that day. I never forgot it. That a slave could take revenge against an emperor.

Ridley Scott is all set to take us back to Ancient Rome with his upcoming Gladiator 2. The previous installment was critically and commercially successful with 5 Oscars including Best Picture and Actor. New details from the upcoming project have been recently revealed at the CinemaCon 2024 and surprisingly, the fans are not very convinced about it.
Russell Crowe played Maximus in Gladiator
Gladiator is one of the most significant films in Ridley Scott’s career. The film boasted some iconic performances from Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, and others. The sequel is set to present a new cast including Denzel Washington, Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, and Joseph Quinn. However, the plot details of the sequel suggest that it may be a cash grab rather than an honest continuation.

A lively CinemaCon presentation closed out with spectacular first footage from Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II as studio top brass mostly put speculation of mergers and acquisitions behind them to focus on a rich upcoming slate.

There was no recorded segment of Cruise dangling from the International Space Station announcing the new title, and no sneak peaks.

Instead of sending in the lions, Paramount unleashed a first look at Ridley Scott’s highly-anticipated Gladiator II at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Appropriately screened at Caesar’s Palace, where the annual onslaught of film and television previews takes place, the sequel to Scott’s 2000 action drama starring Russel Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix includes a brutal display of power and corruption as Lucius (Paul Mescal) aims to become as formidable as Crowe’s iconic character Maximus Decimus Meridius.
During Paramount’s CinemaCon presentation for Gladiator II, Ridley Scott introduced the film from London while the entire cast sent comments in a video compilation. Scott says Gladiator II is more spectacular than the original. Thems bold words, sir!
Pedro Pascal has always been a huge Gladiator fan and has seen it twice in theaters. Meanwhile, Denzel Washington says the new film is why people go to the movies.

It's been 24 years since Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" brought the glory and gore of ancient Rome to gorgeous life, and now the prolific director has returned to the tale with "Gladiator 2." Set 20-30 years after the events of the first film, "Gladiator 2" will star Paul Mescal as Lucius, the son of Roman Empress Lucilla. Though Maximus (Russell Crowe) died along with Lucius's vicious uncle Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) at the end of "Gladiator," both Lucilla and Lucius survived.
The movie will also star Denzel Washington as an arms dealer who has a stable of gladiators and Joseph Quinn as Emperor Caracalla, along with Pedro Pascal, May Calamawy, Peter Mensah, Matt Lucas, Fred Hechinger, and Derek Jacobi. That's quite a packed cast, although with a reportedly massive budget of more than $300 million, "Gladiator 2" could prove to be a disaster financially while paying off well for movie-goers who want to see some high-end historical fiction.

Paul Mescal is the face of the new Roman Empire.
The Oscar-nominated actor leads Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator 2,” the sequel to the Academy Award-winning 2000 film, alongside an impressive cast that includes Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Connie Nielsen reprising her role from the original film.
The footage screened at CinemaCon on Thursday was still unfinished, but Paramount debuted five minutes from the film. In it Mescal, who plays the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus from the original film, is again a slave fighting in games inside the Colosseum. Quinn is the new Caesar deciding the fate of the warriors with a turn of his thumb, Pascal is a general who is being honored with a series of games, and Washington’s character is mysterious, working from behind the scenes to control the power dynamics of ancient Rome.

There was something fitting about the setting.
Paramount Pictures unveiled the first trailer from “Gladiator II” on the stage of The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, a Las Vegas hotel that reimagines Ancient Rome in all its decadent splendor, albeit with a few more slot machines. Director Ridley Scott seems to be offering a bloodier version of that distant age, one that finds Paul Mescal entering the arena as a nobleman who has renounced his privilege and finds himself in a life-and-death struggle for the amusement of the Roman people.
Based on the footage that Scott brought to Sin City to share with cinema owners, “Gladiator 2” recaptures the first film’s epic sprawl and shattering action sequences. The teaser saw Mescal face off against a charging rhino, a horde of vicious baboons, and Pedro Pascal, among other threats to his chiseled physique. There were also naval bombardments, political intrigue aplenty...

Those who know who Roland Emmerich is will probably know that the director is known for his epic films, a lot of which are also major disaster films. Some of these major titles include Universal Soldier (1992), Stargate (1994), Independence Day (1996) and its sequel Independence Day: Resurgence (2016), Godzilla (1998), The Patriot (2000), The Day After Tomorrow (2004), 10,000 BC (2008), 2012 (2009), White House Down (2013), Midway (2019), and Moonfall (2022). But, Emmerich is now shifting to television, as his new project is about to be released on Peacock this summer. Ahead of the premiere, a teaser trailer has been released.
The project in question is the epic sword-and-sandal series Those About to Die, which is set in Ancient Rome. The series will be based on the book of the same name by writer and journalist Daniel P. Mannix; interesting enough, the same book served as the basis for Ridley Scott’s epic classic, Gladiator.

CiniemaCon 2024 is upon us, and as we prepare for a deluge of news, previews, and commentary from the show floor, JoBlo’s Editor-in-Chief, Chris Bumbray, has spotted the official title for Ridley Scott’s upcoming Gladiator sequel. Of all the roles Tom Felton has taken on to date, his portrayal of Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter saga will continue to be remembered as one of his best performances ever. But despite such a remarkable embodiment of the character that had fans loving him in that respective role, the 36-year-old actor has some serious regrets related to the same nonetheless.

Getting to work on a big-scale film like this, especially under the direction of Ridley Scott, is a straightforward decision. Until now, I hadn’t really encountered any major movies that piqued my interest."The 'All of Us Strangers' star has repeatedly said he is feeling the pressure of ensuring the movie is a box office hit.He explained: “The decision feels incredibly appropriate.

Ridley Scott’s journey back to ancient Rome with the Gladiator sequel has hit a few bumps, financially speaking. What started with a budget of $165 million has astonishingly doubled to around $310 million. This has certainly caused some stress among the folks at Paramount, though they claim the expenses didn’t go over $250 million. The production faced several challenges, including on-set accidents and animal welfare complaints that didn’t sit well with many.
In comparison, the original Gladiator movie managed a worldwide gross of $460.6 million against a more modest budget of $103 million, setting a high bar for the sequel’s financial performance and success.
The anticipation for Gladiator 2 is high, with Paul Mescal playing Lucius, who’s now all grown up and entangled in the political webs of Rome. The cast is impressive, featuring stars like Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal, alongside returning faces Connie Nielsen and Derek Jacobi. The...

Paramount could throw Ridley Scott to the lions if Gladiator 2 fails to perform like gangbusters at the box office. A new report from The Hollywood Reporter reveals the ballooning cost of production on the anticipated sequel, with insiders close to the project saying the film budgeted at $165 million is closer to $310 million. Let that amount sink in for a moment.
Per THR’s sources, the net cost of the 49-day shoot was under $250 million. “It’s a runaway,” says one source. “It’s not being managed.” How did this happen? The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes did not help. Production for Gladiator 2 shut down in July because of the negotiations, costing the studio $600,000 a week, roughly $10 million. Scott resumed filming in December, though some say he continued to capture footage using extras during the strikes.
Some wonder if the Gladiator 2 set was cursed. In June, six crewmembers sustained non-life-threatening burn injuries.

Ridley Scott’s Very Expensive Roman Holiday
With accidents on the set, complaints about animal abuse and now reports that the production went wildly over budget, sources tell Rambling Reporter that Ridley Scott’s long-anticipated Gladiator sequel is leaving Paramount execs feeling a bit like Joaquin Phoenix’s Emperor Commodus — “terribly vexed.” Initially budgeted at $165 million, sources say that figure has ballooned to something closer to $310 million. (Paramount insiders insist the net cost of the 49-day shoot was under $250 million.) “It’s a runaway,” says one source. “It’s not being managed.” The strikes account for some of that money; the shutdowns starting in July reportedly cost $600,000 a week, or a total of about $10 million, until Scott resumed shooting in December (though there were reports he kept cameras rolling during the work stoppages, shooting extras at crowd scenes in Malta, where he built a Coliseum set). But even before the walkouts,...

Paramount Pictures didn’t have a bad 2023 but had put a lot of hopes on the latest in the Mission: Impossible franchise to push them towards a great year. After Tom Cruise soared with Top Gun: Maverick, they had hoped fans would flock to theaters once again to see him in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part One. Off that’s a long title. It underperformed, so the next film will get a new name. What can fans look forward to on Paramount’s 2024 release schedule?

A pact between Apple Original Films, A24, Spike Lee, and Denzel Washington is making noise this Thursday with news about a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime drama High and Low. Lee and Washington are old friends, of course, with the duo’s fourth collaboration being for 2006’s Inside Man.
In Kurosawa’s High and Low, an executive of a Yokohama shoe company becomes a victim of extortion when his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped by mistake and held for ransom. Details about Lee’s remake are scarce, though we know it will be an English-language reimagining of the original—details about how and if the plot will differ from Kurosawa’s classic crime drama remains a mystery.

Los Angeles, Feb 5 (Ians) Music legend Joni Mitchell performed at the 66th edition of the Grammy Awards. She sang ‘Both Sides Now’ for her performance debut on the telecast.
‘Both Sides Now’ had some resonance as a performance pick for the Grammys. Her very first Grammy Award 55 years ago, back in 1969, was for the ‘Clouds’ album, on which ‘Both Sides Now’ appeared, reports Variety.
Joni Mitchell performed the song in the format that has brought her back to the stage on just a few occasions since she recovered from a 2015 brain aneurysm: it was done “Joni Jam”style, with the singer-songwriter seated on a comfortable-looking throne with her recent trademark cane, surrounded by similarly seated all-star accompanists — in this case, Brandi Carlile, Allison Russell, Jacob Collier, Lucius, Sista Strings and Blake Mills.

The performance began with an intro speech by Carlile, who described Mitchell as “one of the most influential and emotionally-generous creators in human history.” Celebrating her intimate, vulnerable approach to songwriting, Carlile praised Mitchell as a pioneer, saying that she’s like “the first person to strip down at the skinny dipping party and take that awkward, terrifying leap before everyone else eventually joyfully follows.” Putting things into a bigger perspective, Carlile reflected to the audience that history “will remember that we lived in the time of Joni Mitchell.”
Then, the camera cut to Mitchell singing “Both Sides Now” from a grand white chair on a stage decorated by candelabras.
