Organizers of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the world’s oldest and most important animation festival, revealed Thursday that all the big U.S. studio animation players will be in attendance this year to preview some of their most exciting upcoming titles.
Annecy has long been a launch point for global and indie animation, but over the past several years, it has become an increasingly important platform for big studios as well. This year, that trend continues and, indeed, ramps up.
Illumination will continue a popular tradition by hosting a special screening of “Despicable Me 4” in Annecy. The three previous “Despicable” films and the “Minions: The Rise of Gru” spinoff all screened at Annecy, several of them making their world premieres there.
Disney will host sneak peeks of its 2024 animated feature releases: Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” and Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Moana 2.” Paramount Pictures and Hasbro...

Steven Spielberg's breakthrough movie, famously, did not come easy. In 1974, the up-and-coming filmmaker — then in his twenties — took on the difficult task of adapting a brand new, super-successful novel into what would become the first summer blockbuster, overseeing complex action sequences, massive practical effects set-ups, and shoots in the open ocean. It was a challenge that the filmmaker was hesitant to take on in the first place, and Spielberg eventually ended up over budget and over schedule.
As a product of movie-making titan Universal Pictures, it would've been easy for executives to simply replace Spielberg with another filmmaker. According to the director himself, though, one exec vouched for him, and it was a decision that impacted the rest of his career. Entertainment Weekly once asked Spielberg why he was never fired from "Jaws," and he replied: "Sid Sheinberg always blocked it." As the then-president of Universal, Sheinberg had final...

The Monty Python legend and director of 12 Monkeys and Brazil will be receiving his first Aardman Slapstick award for visual comedy next month. Ask him anything here
Terry Gilliam has directed 13 feature films including 1981 fantasy adventure Time Bandits with Sean Connery and John Cleese, 1995’s sci-fi thriller 12 Monkeys with Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt and 2005 fantasy adventure The Brothers Grimm with Matt Damon and Heath Ledger. It all started, of course, with 1975’s Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the first Monty Python film, which Gilliam co-wrote and starred in along with his fellow Pythons, as well as directing.
Although American-born, Gilliam renounced his American citizenship in 2006. He was nominated for an Oscar for best original screenplay for 1985 sci-fi dystopian dark comedy Brazil and a Golden Globe for best director for 1991 fantasy comedy-drama The Fisher King. The concept of the holiday movie began back in 1898 with G.A. Smith’s pioneering silent film Santa Claus. The first of its kind to show the depiction of Santa that only runs just shy over a minute.
Since then Hollywood has belted out an array of films that have either been true to the genre such as A Christmas Story; The Holiday; Miracle On 34th Street; Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey or films like Die Hard; Brazil, and Gremlins that have teetered on the edge of identifying as a holiday film.
Then there are the anti-holiday movies and the Christmas horrors. Subgenres of their own like the slasher Silent Night, Deadly Night, Black Christmas, and Christmas Evil, a John Waters favorite, so you are inclined to know what demented viewing you are in for.

Exclusive: production designer Nathan Crowley explains how his early work on Steven Spielberg’s Hook and Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula led to the practical sets of Wonka.
About the younger years of the magical confectioner Willy Wonka, director Paul King’s musical prequel Wonka is an ingenious fusion of cutting-edge CGI and traditional effects and props. A performance-captured Hugh Grant may play a particularly grumpy Oompa Loompa, but the film also takes in practical sets, location filming, and real props.
The town square that hosts at least one song-and-dance sequence is a huge, lavish set built at Warner Bros Studios in Leavesden; its nearby port was filmed on location in the UK’s picturesque Lyme Regis. The portable chocolate factory owned by Wonka himself (played by a fresh-faced Timothee Chalamet) was a real, mechanical prop, gently overlaid with a bit of VFX here and there. Former Monty Python member, animator and visionary director Terry Gilliam told Variety at the Red Sea Film Festival on Sunday that he wants Johnny Depp to play Satan in his new film “Carnival at the End of Days.”
Gilliam summarized the plot as: “God wipes out humanity and the only character who wants to save them is Satan, and Johnny Depp plays Satan.”
Gilliam was attending the screening at Red Sea of a double bill of the documentaries “Lost in La Mancha” and “He Dreams of Giants,” both of which document Gilliam’s cursed and grueling attempt to make the film “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.” The film ultimately premiered in Cannes in 2018, starring Jonathan Pryce and Adam Driver.
The producer of the documentaries, Lucy Darwin, was also on stage with Gilliam to explain to the audience how she went from being a publicist on “The Adventures of Baron Munchausen...

With his 1995 film "12 Monkeys," director Terry Gilliam found a Hollywood-scale Trojan horse through which he could launder bleak, dystopian visions into a major science-fiction hit. The filmmaker had clashed with Hollywood before, struggling to bring his provocative, idiosyncratic work to life in an industry that prioritized homogeneity. His chaotic approach to filmmaking had led not just to issues in the industry — it also terrified Sarah Polley, the child star of his 1988 film "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen."
But "12 Monkeys" would suggest, for a minute, an attempt of Gilliam's to walk the line between art and commercial Hollywood. That Gilliam was able to use major movie stars like Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis, each at peaks in their careers, and have them totally sacrifice any sense of celebrity vanity, spoke volumes to his confidence in the material. How many sci-fi blockbusters were based on experimental French New Wave short films?...

Oscar voters in the Best International Feature Film category have received their group assignments for this year’s initial round of voting, with 89 films included on the seven lists that the Academy has sent to members.
The lists, which were obtained by TheWrap, include presumed favorites “The Zone of Interest” (United Kingdom), “The Taste of Things” (France), “The Promised Land” (Denmark) and “Perfect Days” (Japan), along with a number of documentaries, among them Estonia’s “Smoke Sauna Sisterhood,” Brazil’s “Pictures of Ghosts” and Ukraine’s “20 Days in Mariupol.”
The 89 films are four short of the record of 93 qualifying films in the category. The list of group assignments does not make up the Academy’s official list of eligible films; it’s possible that assigned films might still fail to qualify before first-round voting begins on Dec. 18. U.S. writer-director Terry Gilliam had the crowd in stitches throughout his masterclass at the Lumière Film Festival, where he presented the restored version of his 1995 cult movie “12 Monkeys.”
The former Monty Python member, whose career as a director started with the 1975 satirical comedy “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” said that while he was keen to approach difficult subjects, he had learnt from Mary Poppins the secret of success.
“She taught me that the sugar helps the medicine go down,” he quipped, to the audience’s delight.
On a more serious note, Gilliam said that his main goal as a filmmaker was “to make films that make you think about the world in a different way.”
Rejecting the way reality is presented by the media, which he described as “too limited,” Gilliam said it could be “more fascinating, bizarre and surprising.”

With the notable exception of the beloved Carrie Fisher, many of the iconic lead actors in the "Star Wars" saga are still with us. Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, and Natalie Portman are all going strong, and so are the stars of the space opera's most recent episodes. Some of the actors from the original film who were already veterans at the time, like Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing, died some years ago, but both enjoyed long lives beyond the average age.
Sadly, this cannot be said of numerous other actors involved in the big screen franchise and its recent TV spin-offs. Performers have died in their 70s, 60s, and 50s, many of them leaving us wishing we could have seen more years of great performances from them. Whether they had spotlight roles or were hidden behind alien masks, here are the "Star Wars" actors we lost too soon.

Zack Snyder looked to Terry Gilliam’s director’s cut of “Brazil” when crafting the world of “Rebel Moon.”
Snyder confirmed during a recent “Rebel Moon” press preview Q&a (via Slash Film) that a director’s cut was already “part of the plan” with Netflix for the “Rebel Moon” release. The “Star Wars”-esque feature will debut in two parts, titled “A Child of Fire” and “The Scargiver,” respectively, this December and next April. Director’s cuts and featurettes will also reportedly be released on the streaming platform.
Snyder cited Gilliam’s 1985 sci-fi dark comedy starring Jonathan Pryce, Bob Hoskins, and Robert De Niro as part of the reason why he is intrigued by director’s cuts in general.
“I was like, ‘That’s cool. That makes it a lot easier than this,'” Snyder said of the approved director’s cut option. “Because it’s one of those...

I'm not sure if "Loki" season 1 is Marvel's best Disney+ series to date, but it may be the most consistent quality-wise. While other Marvel Cinematic Universe shows have flown higher before stumbling in the final stretch (not naming names), director Kate Herron was steady-handed in her efforts behind the camera on the God of Mischief's solo outing, as were head writer Michael Waldron and his fellow scribes.
At the bare minimum, "Loki" season 1 is one of the best-looking MCU shows. The interiors of the Time Variance Authority (Tva) headquarters, where the "Avengers: Endgame" variant of Tom Hiddleston's trickster god is essentially taken prisoner after evading his fate, have a stylishly retro-futuristic yet mundane aesthetic. It's like someone crossed the titular city in Fritz Lang's 1927 German Expressionist classic "Metropolis" with your local Dmv. Waldron, speaking to The Wrap in 2021, likened the Tva to the Tyrell Corporation from "Blade Runner...

Terry Gilliam walks, trots actually, through the white alleys of Monopoli. Humming as he goes: “I’ve got two legs from my hips to the ground/And when they move they walk around/And when I lift them they climb the stairs/And when I shave them they ain’t got hairs.”
“That’s the most important and well-known song I’ve ever written,” he jokes, “and I understand this now more than ever: Being an almost 83-year-old man, I thank my legs every day. They haven’t betrayed me yet!”
Far from being an “old man,” Gilliam remains a force of nature. The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival came to a close on Saturday, May 27 after two weeks of films, celebrities, parties and interviews in the small city on the French Riviera. Now that the prizes have been given out, we can start looking at what could be top contenders for next year’s Oscars. Let’s analyze the results from this year’s festival and see this history that each category has when it comes to the Academy Awards.
Over the past several years the festival has been a springboard for major players in the Oscar derby. We’ve really seen it be an influence in the International Feature category where in-competition films have been nominated a regular basis. Recent Cannes films that ended up being top awards contenders in above the line categories include “Triangle of Sadness,” “Drive My Car,” “Parasite,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “BlacKkKlansman.

In 1516, English philosopher Thomas More published Utopia, a piece of speculative fiction filled with musings about the ideal society. Of course, it was all nonsense. So even though it took a few more centuries for the word to come into use, “dystopia” has always captured the human imagination better than utopia. Literally stories about “bad places,” dystopias show humanity at its worst.
As you might expect, dystopias tend to be cynical works of imagination. But that’s not all they are. By looking at how dark things could be, dystopias shine a light on the world as it currently is. Works of literature like Watchmen and television series such as Black Mirror have told their stories about bleak alternate realities to issue warnings about the arms race and social media, making grotesques out of the real world.

Could you imagine a world where Terry Gilliam’s Brazil doesn’t exist? It’s a dark territory, I know. Would you believe Universal almost shelved the filmmaker’s dystopian sci-fi drama in America before one of its stars, Robert De Niro, rescued the film from cancelation? According to Gilliam, the brilliant director behind films like The Fisher King and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Universal balked at the film and demanded significant changes before it could open in theaters. After an exhausting back and forth between Gilliam and then-Universal chief Sid Sheinberg, De Niro used his connections to push the film’s fate in a more positive direction.
Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast, Gilliam said, “The studio did not like the movie at all.” Gilliam says he was on pins and needles during a screening where Universal executives looked pensive and distraught about Brazil.

Now widely regarded as a masterpiece, Terry Gilliam’s 1985 dystopic dark comedy Brazil was very nearly shelved by Universal. But one of its stars — Robert De Niro — played a hand in rescuing it from oblivion.
“The studio did not like the movie at all,” says Gilliam on The Hollywood Reporter‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast. The director recalls standing at the back of a room filled with “knotted backs of necks” as Brazil screened for Universal execs for the first time.
Then-Universal chief Sid Sheinberg told Gilliam he “hated” the film and insisted he radically change it. When Gilliam refused, Sheinberg refused to release it.
Gilliam recalls strategizing at the time: “We can’t fight them with lawyers. Let’s go about it a different way.” And so the director took out a full-page ad in Variety, reading, “Dear Sid Sheinberg: When are you going to release my film,...

When J.K. Rowling's popular "Harry Potter" series of books enchanted children and adults the world over, a Hollywood bidding war erupted. Every studio in town wanted the rights to the publishing phenomenon. Warner Bros. ultimately won out, at which point the hard work of finding the right filmmaker to launch the cash-cow franchise began.
Steven Spielberg was the obvious choice, but he envisioned the adaptations as an animated series. This was too limiting for WB, which turned the project into the most coveted open assignment in the industry. Many of the most desired directors were too auteurist for the assignment. Peter Weir, Alan Parker and M. Night Shyamalan had a distinctive style that might've overwhelmed or outright clashed with the mainstream-skewing material.
These films needed a steady hand, someone who could deliver a homogenized, four-quadrant take on the family-friendly books. They needed, and got, Chris Columbus. But if Rowling had her way,...

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of The Mandalorian.
"The Convert," the third episode of the third season of "The Mandalorian" and the nineteenth installment of the show overall, takes a hard left turn at Coruscant and follows intrigue that will likely lead us to Moff Gideon later in the season.
The episode begins with Lady Bo-Katan Kryze of Clan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) having just pulled Din Djarin from the Living Waters of Mandalore. Din regains consciousness and she asks him if he saw anything living down there. When he says he didn't, she keeps the information about the mythosaur they saw in the last episode to herself.
As they leave Mandalore, successful in their mission to redeem Din Djarin, they head back to Bo-Katan's castle only to find it under attack from Imperials. What Imperials? And how do they have so many Tie Interceptors and Tie Bombers?...

This month sees the U.S. release of The Amazing Maurice, a feature length adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s acclaimed 2001 YA novel. Though Pratchett has been adapted a handful of times for television, most recently with Amazon’s Good Omens (excellent) and BBC America’s The Watch (patchy), this will be the first true big-screen take on a Pratchett book*, which is frankly astonishing when you consider that Sir Terry has been a bestseller since the mid-‘80s, with a series of accessible and cinematic comic fantasy hits, most of which would lend themselves to the screen.
Pratchett even writes cinematically—almost all of his adult novels are written without chapters, skipping scene-to-scene just as a movie does. Some of these books were adapted in the ‘90s for the stage, three successful video games, and even a prog rock album. Meanwhile several of his novels have been made successfully for the small screen,...

In 2023, many of Terry Gilliam's old fans have been forced to face some of the director's questionable behavior, dark opinions, and irresponsible filming style. Briefly: in 2020, Gilliam said in public that the #MeToo movement was a witch hunt, downplaying the widespread sexual abuse the movement sought to highlight. Gilliam followed those statements with a defense of Harvey Weinstein, a defense that fell in line with a notorious petition he signed a decade previous seeking to exonerate Roman Polanski. Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, Michael Mann, Pedro Almodóvar, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Wong Kar-Wai, and David Lynch also signed the petition. So did Harvey Weinstein, who asked many for support.
Famously, Gilliam's films have almost all had troubled shoots, and each one comes prepackaged with a chaotic story about its making. "Brazil" was infamously recut several times, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" briefly didn't know which script it was supposed to use,...

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards are being announced today and we’re updating the list live.
Hello! We're discussing new business. We'll start voting in one moment. #Lafca

The organization has arguably a better record of syncing up with Oscar’s ultimate Best Picture winner than some New York awards orgs, i.e. some recent examples of their Best Picture Winners lining up with AMPAS include 2019’s Parasite, 2016’s Moonlight, 2015’s Spotlight, 2009’s The Hurt Locker.

However, one thing about Lafca — they’re not afraid to go rogue: I.E. 1985 when they anointed Terry Gilliam’s carnivalesque, trippy epic Brazil Best Picture and Best Director; the filmmaker having made his war with Universal over the film, fresh meat for the trades. This post contains spoilers for the film "The Zero Theorem."
Terry Gilliam's 2014 film "The Zero Theorem" takes place in a near future that is overwhelmed by corporate control and personal chaos. At the center of the film is a mysterious company called Mancom, which is large and complex enough to have a division of ontology. Working for Mancom is a mentally unstable computer programmer named Qohen (Christoph Waltz), who spends his days "crunching entities" for ineffable purposes. His work in envisioned by screens filled with interlocking cubes. At night, Qohen sleeps in a dark, disused church, one of the only places he's content. A rarity in the universe of the film, Qohen is a man of faith. For therapy, he consults a psychiatrist robot called Dr. Shrink-Rom (Tilda Swinton).
Eventually, Qohen will learn that his ultimate goal at work is to author a massively complex mathematical proof declaring that...

Terry Gilliam's "Brazil" was made under relatively harmonious conditions. Arnon Milchan's Embassy International Pictures gave the filmmaker what was then a generous 15 million budget for what was, on the page, a bleak comedy about bureaucratic tyranny and the looming threat of an unchecked surveillance state. Gilliam's 143-minute cut of the film was released sans incident in Europe during the first quarter of 1985, but, this being the pre-internet days, the overseas critical buzz didn't cross the Atlantic unless you were a plugged-in industry type or the most die-hard of "Monty Python" fans.
This was unfortunate because the domestic distribution rights to "Brazil" belonged to Universal Pictures, which was being run at the time by Sidney Sheinberg. As the company's President and COO, Sheinberg had successfully guided the studio through the New Hollywood revolution by advocating for a young Steven Spielberg and taking the counsel of his junior executives by making "National Lampoon's Animal House.

Five Oxbridge "superior beings" and one American "barbarian at the gates," to use Terry Gilliam's own words; that was the lineup for "Monty Python's Flying Circus," the comedy troupe that took irreverent aim at the social and class boundaries of stuffy British society and, in their anarchic way, the very format of comedy itself.
For his part, Gilliam was the often-overlooked member of the gang, not only an outsider by nationality and class but also due to his role within the Pythons. As the animator, he worked alone and made far fewer appearances in their sketches, often taking on gurning grotesques that the others didn't really want to play. As a result, he never really had a defining screen persona. While we remember John Cleese and Michael Palin from the Dead Parrot sketch or the Ministry of Silly Walks, and Eric Idle as the insinuating spiv in the Nudge-Nudge routine,...

Gal Costa, one of the most important artists in Brazilian music, died on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Born Maria da Graça Penna Burgos Costa in 1945, the influential singer was raised in Salvador, Bahia, where she took her first steps into music with the likes of Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Maria Bethânia. She was barely in her twenties in 1967 when she released her first album Domingo, a bossa nova-only feat with Veloso.
In 1968, she became one of the most important voices of tropicália, the counterculture movement that disrupted Brazil’s arts and society at the time.

It's hard to imagine the animation landscape as it is today without the 2008 release of "Wall-e." Even if you aren't a big fan of Disney's domination of the medium, you can't deny that it is a tender love story that deals with heavy themes such as environmental decay and consumerism. If you ever once thought that animation was just for kids, "Wall-e" proves you wrong.
This is likely why "Wall-e" was selected as the Criterion Collection's first-ever entry from Disney, and while you may have mixed emotions about a Disney movie getting inducted, there are few movies that deserve it more than Andrew Stanton's. /Film's Josh Spiegel interviewed the longtime Pixar director ahead of his film's Criterion release, which will arrive in stores on November 22, and Stanton revealed that he has a few releases from the prestigious label, revealing his favorite releases along the way:

Terry Gilliam's Time On Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas Was More Mundane Than The Movie Makes It Seem
Hunter S. Thompson was my favorite writer when I was in my early 20s, and I really bought into the idea of gonzo journalism. Thanks to "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and "The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved," I interpreted it as this: Take a trip somewhere, get wasted, indulge in some wild and crazy s***, then write about it. I was pretty good at the wild and crazy part back then, but the problem was that I forgot to actually write anything. When I did occasionally get around to putting pen to paper, I found myself aping Thompson's style way too much.
I was over my Hunter Thompson obsession by the time Terry Gilliam's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" hit our screens in 1998, but I still couldn't see how it played out. For me, Ralph Steadman's aggressive illustrations were as inseparable from the text...

Spun Gold To “Reimagine” BAFTA Coverage
Next year’s BAFTA TV and Film Awards will be “significantly expanded and reimagined” as a new production company, Spun Gold TV, takes the reins. Co-producing alongside BAFTA, Spun Gold has replaced previous producers Done + Dusted and Whizz Kid following a tender process to make the coverage for the next two years. BAFTA said Spun Gold will work with the body to “reimagine and significantly expand the production and format of both events.” Ceremonies will be broadcast as per usual on BBC One and take place live at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Inside Dubai producer Spun Gold has made the likes of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations for ITV and the same network’s Real Full Monty concerts. BBC Entertainment Director Kalpna Patel-Knight praised the company’s “first-class reputation in making high quality, innovative and engaging content.” Elsewhere, UK PR firm Premier...

Midnights is officially a record-breaking album. On Friday, Spotify revealed that Taylor Swift’s new album had become the most-streamed project in a single day in the streaming service’s history.
Sharing Spotify’s tweet, Swift wrote, “How did I get this lucky, having you guys out here doing something this mind-blowing?! Like what even just happened??!?!”
Though Spotify did not immediately release the official streaming numbers, with the accomplishment, Swift beats out Bad Bunny’s previously held record after Un Verano Sin Ti garnered 183 million streams when it was released in May.

It's common for any long-running television sitcom to eventually "jump the shark." But to do it in 3D? That takes some real moonstones, and the cast of "3rd Rock from the Sun" did it in sublime fashion.
After its first season, "3rd Rock from the Sun" was nominated for three Emmys, with star John Lithgow winning Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. By the show's second season, that number increased to eight nominations and five wins, including a nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series.
Despite the early success of the show, NBC decided that the final episode of season 2 needed to be big -- so big that they brought in film director Phil Joanou to direct 16 minutes of 3D sequences for a two-episode special entitled "A Nightmare on Dick Street, Parts I & II."
Although the show was known for its eccentric nature, the creative team didn't share NBC's enthusiasm over the idea.

Brazilian singer Anitta recently wowed fans in her skimpy green bikini. Pic credit: @anitta/Instagram
Less than a week after she put on a sizzling performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, singer Anitta brought more sizzle with a stunning bikini shot on her social media.
The 29-year-old musician from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, took to her Instagram Story and Ig page on Friday, showing off her green bikini and a top representing her country.
An Ig Story pic revealed Anitta lifting herself out of a pool of water and posing in skimpy string bikini bottoms and a tied-off green top with “Made in Brazil” written across it in yellow.

Autumn Durald Arkapaw made Variety’s 10 Cinematographers to Watch list in 2014, and she just landed her first Emmy nomination for lensing for a single-camera series for Disney+’s “Loki.”
“Loki,” which earned six noms, was her first foray into the comic book realm. She met with director Kate Herron and the two immediately hit it off. The bonus was that she already was a fan of Tom Hiddleston’s leading character. “If I was watching anything Marvel, he stands out. So, I already had a love for his character,” she says.
The series throws the God of Mischief into a world inspired by “Blade Runner 2049,” “Brazil” and even “Seven.”
For the climactic ending of the third episode, “Lamentis,” production designer Kasra Farahani built the city of Shuroo. Loki and Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) race through the streets as they search for a getaway spaceship. As the frantic chase played out,...
