Through the lens of 2024, “Dogfight” plays like a subtle, personal film you would expect from indie director Nancy Savoca (“Household Saints”), but that’s not what Warner Bros. thought they were making.
“They were thinking ‘Porky’s.’ They thought it was a comedy,” said director Nancy Savoca while on IndieWire’s Toolkit podcast to discuss “Dogfight,” which is entering the Criterion Collection on April 30.
At the end of the 1980s headed into the early ’90s, when Warners was developing Bob Comfort’s “Dogfight” screenplay, teen comedies were big business for the studios. Alongside the wild success of the classic slate of teen comedies John Hughes wrote, directed, or produced, the “Porky’s” trilogy came to define the sex comedies of the era. It’s through this lens the studio saw the dogfight competition in Comfort’s script: A group of young soldiers pick up the “ugliest” woman they can find, bring her to a bar,...

Good Morning America fans see that Michael Strahan’s19-year-old daughter, Isabella Strahan fights her brain cancer with courage, and at her side is her twin sister, Sophia, so they both get a lot of love from admirers. New photos shared by Sophia on social media showed that despite a recent setback and a third surgery, Isabella looks beautiful, and she smiled.
Michael Strahan & Sophia Are There For Isabella
Cancer at any age strikes fear in the heart, despite modern medicine. And for Isabella Strahan, it came as a freshman in college. Her dad took a lot of time away from Good Morning America because his girl is so very precious to him. It’s been a bumpy ride for the family since the first brain surgery in October last year. Radiation was followed by chemotherapy. Additionally, more surgeries followed.

For Isabella Strahan, it’s been a rollercoaster of emotions.

Molly Ringwald, star of 1980s hit The Breakfast Club, has revealed she only rewatched the movie recently, and was jarred by some of the themes that were glossed over at the time.
Ringwald played Claire Standish, nicknamed “Princess,” one of five disparate school students grouped together during a weekend detention period, in the movie, written and directed by John Hughes, which debuted in 1985. Her co-stars included Judd Nelson, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy and Anthony Michael Hall, with Paul Gleason as the school’s authoritarian vice-principal.
Ringwald told The Times of London she sat down to watch the movie with her 21-year-old daughter, actress Mathilda Gianopoulos:
“I only rewatched The Breakfast Club, which came out in 1985, because Mathilda wanted to see it with me. There is a lot that I really love about the movie but there are elements that haven’t aged well — like Judd Nelson’s character, John Bender,...

Duckie may have had it out for Blane, but the feud extended behind the scenes as well, as Jon Cryer and Andrew McCarthy did not jive while making teen movie classic Pretty in Pink. Now, Cryer says that has all settled…but who gets to go home with Andie?
Appearing on The View (per Entertainment Weekly), Jon Cryer said of Andrew McCarthy, “He and I famously did not get along when we were shooting Pretty in Pink…It was because there was tension. Interestingly, I saw him backstage and we had a lovely time, we had a great talk. Thank you!”
Cryer went on to detail why he and McCarthy didn’t get along during Pretty in Pink, citing issues that were far deeper that what we see onscreen. “At any rate, what I realize now, he wrote a terrific memoir called Brat, he was already struggling with alcoholism back...

According to Andrew McCarthy, he could tell there was a difference in how he was treated once he was labelled as part of the iconic Brat Pack group of actors in the 1980s. The “St. Elmo’s Fire” and “Pretty in Pink” star broke down the change during a panel at the Television Critics Association’s 2024 winter tour.
McCarthy is currently behind “Brats,” ABC News Studios’ upcoming documentary about the group. The film follows McCarthy as he reunites with former members of the group and reflects on how David Blum’s 1985 New York magazine feature, which popularized the nickname, forever changed their careers.
“Ally [Sheedy] talks about this in the movie. She goes, ‘I remember going into rooms and I was suddenly perceived differently.’ Before it was like, ‘Here are the young guys,'” McCarthy said Saturday, mimicking the enthusiasm he used to experience from Hollywood producers and executives.

Update, with video: Probably best not to hold your breath for any possible Two and a Half Men reboots. Jon Cryer doesn’t seem to be.
Cryer, who co-starred with Charlie Sheen on the famously troubled but immensely popular CBS 2003-2015 sitcom, visited The View today to promote his latest series, the NBC sitcom Extended Family. When the inevitable question about the possibility of a Two and a Half Men reboot series, Cryer was considerably less than enthusiastic.
When View co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin pointed out that Sheen had recently rekindled his friendship with Men producer Chuck Lorre (the two are working on the Max comedy Bookie), she asked whether Cryer would be open to a Men reboot.
But Cryer suggested that Sheen sabotaged the show’s initial run, and that the prospect of working together again “for any length of time” is not a high priority for the Pretty in Pink actor.

Jon Cryer has proved himself a marketable quantity in the network sitcom game, a success most recently reflected in his starring role on the new NBC and Peacock show “Extended Family.”
Cryer, in an interview on the “Wtf With Marc Maron” podcast, recalled a key effort that helped cement that status — his part on the hit Charlie Sheen-starring sitcom “Two and a Half Men.”
Cryer said he remembered how Sheen’s role came together and how CBS played a big part.
“CBS wanted Charlie Sheen on the air so badly, and you could sense that,” Cryer said. “Based on, he had done ‘Spin City’ for a couple of seasons, and everybody was like, ‘Wow, he’s really good.’ Cause he took over for Michael J. Fox, and everybody said, ‘That is a bad idea.’ And then he turned out to be good on the show, with a totally different character.

Andrew McCarthy has written and directed Brats, and his documentary about The Brat Pack arrives later this year. More details within.
Tearing up the 1980s, both on and off cinema screens, was a bunch of young performers who earned themselves the collective name of The Brat Pack.
The group was made up of the likes of Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Bob Cryer and Andrew McCarthy, and they sprung to prominence particularly in 1985 and 1986. That’s when that group made up the cast for two hit movies, namely St Elmo’s Fire (pictured) and Pretty In Pink.
Other films followed, and the tabloid interest was intense, leading writer David Blum to give them the Brat Pack name. Andrew McCarthy reflected on all of this in a memoir he penned called Brats, released in 2021. Now, Deadline reports that the story is being turned by McCarthy into a documentary.

The not-so-secret fact about premieres is that the actors rarely watch, usually ducking out when the lights go down. They spend the film’s duration smoking cigarettes and reciting the cinema’s version of the serenity prayer: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, i.e. the director’s predilection to use my worst take.”
That was not the case at Sundance’s world premiere of Steven Soderbergh’s “Presence,” a ghostly thriller about the Payne family, a bougie clan with a significant number of problems including a spectral, uh, presence that could be friend or foe. Lovers of 80s movies know the Brat Pack. The group of stars who graced the silver screen in films like Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and St. Elmos Fire were teen sensations and helped a generation grapple with coming-of-age issues in high school. Most have gone on to blossom into illustrious film careers, but they will always be remembered for their run in the 1980s film scene. While most also eventually bowed gracefully out of show business down the line, Andrew McCarthy was one member who had been out of the spotlight since the 90s.
Deadline is reporting that McCarthy will be rejoining his cohorts for the Hulu documentary titled Brats. McCarthy had written a memoir called Brat: An 80s story and has now written and directed the documentary that is currently in post-production. Photograph by Courtesy of Paramount Pictures With its Brat Pack cast and post-New Wave soundtrack, Pretty in Pink remains one of the quintessential teen movies of the 1980s. Even though he didn’t direct it, most people consider the film to be a John Hughes movie — after all, he did write the screenplay and was an executive producer. Because of that, he played a large part in the casting process, which worked out well for Andrew McCarthy, who landed one of the starring roles. Speaking on a Steel City Con panel, McCarthy told the story of how Hughes chose him for the movie based on the recommendation of Pretty in Pink’s female lead, Molly Ringwald. It’s hard to believe, but the concept of the teenager is younger than film as a medium. According to historians, American culture first began thinking of the period of 13 to 19 as a specific bridge between childhood and adulthood in the 1940s, in part due to marketing executives looking to define people in that age range as a new demographic. And shortly afterwards, that demographic became ubiquitous on TV and films.
The first teen films began popping up in earnest during the 1950s, with landmark titles like “The Wild One,” “Blackboard Jungle,” and the enduringly iconic “Rebel Without a Cause.” Each film featured a bonafide screen legend — Marlon Brando in “The Wild One,” Sidney Poitier in “Blackboard Jungle,” and James Dean in his most iconic role in “Rebel Without a Cause” — and established films that took the emotional turmoil of teen life seriously as a vibrant subgenre. If there’s one character that Jon Cryer will forever be linked to, it’s Duckie from Pretty in Pink. The hopeless romantic who pines for Molly Ringwald’s Andie, he was the charming underdog that gave the audience someone to root for. And while he didn’t get the girl (although he did in the original ending), Duckie remains a key character not just in ‘80s teen movies but for Jon Cryer himself, saying he continues to be a role model.
Speaking with People, Jon Cryer said, “Duckie was very aspirational for me, because he was the guy I wish I was.” The actor, who was never part of the Brat Pack but danced around it (literally) through Pretty in Pink, added that he – and some classmates – shared many characteristics with Duckie. “I think that really is a universal experience for most people…I don’t think most people go through high school thinking,...

Jon Cryer is revealing which character from his past projects he wishes he was more like.

Pretty in Pink has all the earmarks of a John Hughes film: It takes place in the Chicago suburbs, it features many of the Brat Pack actors who were regulars in his movies, and it was propelled by a vibrant, modern soundtrack. But Hughes didn’t actually direct Pretty in Pink — Howard Deutch did. That doesn’t mean, though, that Hughes’s fingerprints weren’t all over it. In 1985, a princess, a brain, a jock, a basket case, and a criminal got together for weekend detention and came out of it changed people. The culture of Gen X was often defined by the stereotypes they fit in as teenagers, whether it was the truth of who they were or not. Nowhere was that more apparent than in the films of writer/director John Hughes. "The Breakfast Club" is a pivotal movie for that generation.
In the film, we spend the day with a group of kids in weekend detention. Claire (Molly Ringwald) was the popular rich girl whose parents didn't care about her. Brian (Anthony Michael Hall) was the brain who attempted suicide after getting a failing grade that didn't meet his parents' expectations (Hughes played his dad in an uncredited cameo). Andrew (Emilio Estevez) was the jock who got in trouble for physically abusing one of Brian's friends.

When Mark Harmon decided to leave NCIS after nearly two decades of work as Leroy Jethro Gibbs, fans were certain it was the end of the series. Harmon had become the show in many ways, and fans couldn’t see a path through the departure of the show’s guiding light. It worked out, though. Harmon walked away to look for other projects and spend time with his family, and NCIS continued. It might be surprising to learn that Harmon was one of many actors considered for the part of Gibbs when NCIS was in development. The casting team even discussed casting Harrison Ford of Star Wars and Indiana Jones fame in the role. A meeting probably never took place about the part, though.
‘Star Wars’ star Harrison Ford was thought to be “perfect” for the part of Gibbs on ‘NCIS’

Ten years ago, Lorde shook up the pop world with her sharp and brooding debut Pure Heroine. Now 26, the pop star took a moment to deeply reflect on making the album that changed her life and the experience of becoming the most famous teen in the world.
Lorde sent her thoughts via her fan newsletter. She first thanked for their “compassion and understanding” in response to her last letter, about “living with heartbreak again.” She segued into pointing out that “it’s 2013 mode round here” before acknowledging the big milestone.

The tributes have begun to pour in for NCIS veteran David McCallum, who died this morning at 90 in New York.
McCallum was the last remaining original cast member on CBS’ NCIS. He played Chief Medical Examiner Donald “Ducky” Mallard, an eccentric but highly efficient investigator with a knack for psychological profiling, for two decades.
In a statement provided to Deadline, longtime NCIS star Mark Harmon said, “David lived a great, full, long life. I was in awe when I first met him and all of us on the show were honored to have toed a mark opposite him. My condolences go out to Katherine and his family.”
Former NCIS colleague Michael Weatherly wrote on X that “David McCallum made every moment count, in life and on set. Let’s raise a jug and celebrate a funny fantastic authentic man. I’ve only got 3 autographs. Connery, Tony Bennett and McCallum. I...

With “Dancing with the Stars” set to come back for a 32nd season this fall on ABC after spending last year on Disney+, there’s a long list of celebrities who deserve to compete on the dance floor. Two of my previous suggestions came true: Frankie Muniz (who came in third in season 25) and Kel Mitchell (who came in second in season 28). Below is a list of female stars I think the show should consider inviting to the ballroom to vie for the next Mirror Ball Trophy. Do you agree with my picks? Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know which you’d most like to see on “DWTS.” And feel free to let us know in the comments what other stars you would like to see when the show comes back in September.

Popularly known as “The 80’s Teen Queen” Molly Ringwald is a credit to her generation. Not only is she an American actress, but she’s also a writer and translator. Her career kicked off quite early with her appearing on shows like Different Strokes and The Facts of Life (1979–1980). Both shows aired during the same period the star was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in the 1982 drama Tempest. She is also known for her roles in Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles cementing her role as an ion for years to come. Needless to say, Ringwald’s...

Review: The latest Happy Madison production for Netflix is a family affair with Adam Sandler producing and co-starring in a production led by a cast featuring his daughters, Sunny and Sadie, and his wife, Jackie. Based on the best-selling young adult novel You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah could easily have been written off as a nepotism project for the Sandler clan. But, with a heartfelt message and a theme reminiscent of classic Judy Blume, the film works far better than it has any right to. She only has three solo directorial efforts under her belt, but Greta Gerwig has quickly become one of the most highly respected filmmakers working today. Her 2017 coming-of-age drama “Lady Bird” was an instant teen classic upon release, and her 2019 adaptation of “Little Women” received similar rapturous acclaim, becoming the definitive film version of the classic book.
And in July, after an agonizing three year wait and acting a lead role in partner Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise,” Gerwig came back to theaters as a director with one of the biggest films of the year. “Barbie” is a colorful studio comedy based on the classic dolls from Mattel, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the titular Barbie and her heartthrob Ken. (He’s just Ken!) And it’s smashing box office numbers

Molly Ringwald was the queen of eighties teen movies. Her films with John Hughes, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink have all stood the test of time and are just as believed by audiences in 2023 as they were nearly forty years ago. But, despite being one of the biggest names of the decade, Ringwald found herself typecast for many years, with more adult roles in movies like Fresh Horses and The Pick-Up Artist falling flat. She also, notoriously, turned down the lead in Pretty Woman, the movie which made Julia Roberts a household name.
In the nineties, Ringwald struggled to break free of the Brat Pack label, even if she was never actually a part of that clique, but eventually embraced her place in the pop culture with a well-received cameo in Not Another Teen Movie (which people forget starred Chris Evans). More recently, Ringwald has developed...

In the 1980s, Andrew McCarthy attained stardom by virtue of being part of the Brat Pack, starring in films like Pretty in Pink and St. Elmo’s Fire with other Brat Packers like Molly Ringwald, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Demi Moore. In the 1990s, McCarthy went on the record as denying he was ever part of the Brat Pack. But, in recent years, he’s had a change of heart. Two years ago, he published a memoir called Brat: An ’80s Story, and he’s currently working on a documentary based on the book. Speaking at a Steel City Con panel, McCarthy talked about why he eventually decided to embrace his Brat Pack membership. In a new interview, Matthew Broderick says he would occasionally “butt heads” with John Hughes during the making of the 1986 comedy classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
“He was not easygoing in some ways,” Broderick, 61, says of the late writer-director legend on The Hollywood Reporter’s It Happened in Hollywood podcast. “He was nervous it wouldn’t come out right.”
Broderick fondly recalls spending hours in Hughes’ swimming pool in Brentwood around the time of the filming, “smoking cigarettes and eating potato chips” as they discussed the role that would eventually shoot the actor, then 23, to superstardom.
But things got off to a bumpy start when filming began on location in Chicago in September 1985.
“I remember we did a costume test early on,” Broderick recalls. “We walked around the streets of Chicago in our costumes and they filmed us — me, Alan [Ruck], Jennifer Grey and Mia [Sara].
“That was a big drama.

People who came of age in the ’80s know exactly what the Brat Pack is — and can likely identify most, if not all, of its members. For the uninitiated, the Brat Pack was a group of young actors who found themselves in the ensemble casts of several of the decade’s most influential films aimed at younger viewers. Molly Ringwald is getting candid about finding her way in Hollywood when she was younger, and why she turned down an iconic role in Pretty Woman.
Early in her career, Ringwald was making her name as the new “It” girl with films like The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles, but when she wanted to branch out, she found it difficult.
“I didn’t really feel like darker roles were available to me,” she explained to The Guardian in a recent interview. “The ones that I wanted to do, I didn’t get. I was too young for certain roles. I was at this weird in-between stage.”
As she tried to navigate the industry and figure out what projects suited her best, she even turned down some roles, including Julia Roberts’ Vivian Ward. Ringwald told the outlet that the while the Erin Brockovich actress “was wonderful” in the hit 1990 rom-com,...

Molly Ringwald was much in demand in the 1980s, thanks to her starring roles in the films Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club.
But she wasn’t interested in being a part of the romantic comedy Pretty Woman, which Julia Roberts turned into an Academy Award-nominated performance.

At this point, it's probably not a spoiler to say that a key "Yellowjackets" character is alive and somewhat well. That character is Vanessa "Van" Palmer (Lauren Ambrose and Liv Hewton), and if we're being honest, she's kind of living the best life out of all the show's plane crash survivors. Why is that? Well, she has her own video and DVD rental business, While You Were Streaming, smack dab in the middle of an undisclosed Pennsylvanian town. If you are even the slightest bit familiar with the work we do here at Slash Film dot com, it shouldn't be a surprise that we consider this the best possible fate to have.
What also isn't surprising is that Van has very good taste in movies, and also knows a thing or two about Hollywood's bizarre queer history. That's because While You Were Streaming is filled with Easter eggs to mainstream queer cinema,...

Few events loom larger in the minds of movie teenagers than prom. Dreams are realized, bullies are put in their place, girls are declared “all that.” Real life is rarely as dramatic, thankfully, but that doesn’t mean we should expect studios (and streamers) to stop trying to make the next “Pretty in Pink” or “10 Things I Hate About You” anytime soon. Disney offer a fresh take on teendom’s big night with “Prom Pact,” in which two platonic best friends who are more comfortable on the outside looking in decide to finally step into the fray of high school life.
Mandy Yang (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) first appears in a Ruth Bader Ginsburg T-shirt, obsessively refreshing her Harvard application in the hopes that it’s gone from “pending” to “accepted” while trying to avoid the pep rally where North Seattle High will officially announce its prom theme: the ‘80s.

“Let’s be honest. Let’s just face it. We needed a poster child for the dry landscape that is menopause,” said Naomi Watts, kicking off the first West Coast event for her Stripes line of menopause-focused beauty and wellness products on March 11 in Santa Monica.
“The reason I called the brand Stripes is because I feel like we have earned it,” she continued. “We can now hold our heads high and know that these cumulative experiences lead to something. We deserve respect and we can feel our best.”
The sold out New Pause Symposium, held in partnership with San Francisco-based midlife digital community The Swell at the Santa Monica Proper Hotel, included a day’s worth of talks by medical experts and the actress’ friends. Among them were actress Molly Ringwald and writer-podcast host Elise Loehnen, previously chief content officer at Goop. Tickets ranged from $195 to $595 and included a dinner with Watts.
