The 1990s were an exciting period for action films, with many of them getting released direct-to-video and showing up seemingly randomly at local video stores, requiring fans of the genre to have memberships at multiple locations to get to see everything. There was so much that if attention wasn’t paid, titles would be missed easily or rented twice under different titles at different video stores. Stars emerged within those ranks and gathered the love and adoration of fans. Here are the 10 of the best Dtv action stars of that era:
Dolph Lundgren
Let’s start with the obvious man on the list, the one that everyone saw films from at their local video stores. Lundgren had films that were released in theaters, on video, and direct to cable in some cases during the 1990s, but one thing is for sure, he was a mainstay of the action film aisle...

Henry Jaglom’s 1971 film is a bit of magic realism that performed a vanishing act at the box office. It remains a fascinating curio, bringing together old school genius/magician Orson Welles with an emerging Hollywood vanguard embodied by Jack Nicholson. Tuesday Weld stars as a lonely dreamer with a tenuous relationship to reality while Gwen Welles and Firesign Theater’s Phil Proctor make up a small but reliably quirky cast.

Exclusive: Popcornflix, the streaming service owned by Crackle parent Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, has acquired its first original documentary feature, Hollywood Bulldogs: The Rise and Falls of the Great British Stuntman.
The colorful portrait (watch the trailer above), explores major 1970s and 1980s franchises like James Bond, Indiana Jones, Superman, Star Wars, Rambo and more. Instead of the well-trod stories you may have heard, the accounts of the tight-knit group of British stuntmen who brought them to life take center stake. Ray Winstone, known for his performances in Sexy Beast and The Departed, narrates the film, which will begin streaming on the free, ad-supported Popcornflix next Monday. (Britbox debuted it in the UK last summer.)
Jon Spira, the film’s director, called it “a movie for people who love action movies and can’t get enough of them,” noting that it is “the first time many of these...

Above: Poster by Frank Stella for the 9th New York Film Festival.Compared to the 32 films in the main slate of this year’s New York Film Festival, not to mention the seemingly hundreds of others playing in sidebars, the 1971 edition of the NYFF, half a century ago, was a lean affair. With only 18 films, down from 78 just four years earlier, the ninth edition of the NYFF was, according to its director Richard Roud, a “belt-tightening festival, a year of consolidation.” In fact, the financially strapped festival almost didn’t take place that year. A New York Times article published midway through the event mentions that “outside the 984-seat Vivian Beaumont Theater, there is only one poster announcing the festival [one assumes it was the beautiful Frank Stella poster above] that is quietly and modestly taking place inside.” A far cry from the glorious phalanx of digital billboards currently beaming outside Alice Tully Hall and the Elinor Bunin Center.The...

Jack Nicholson has had a long career playing brooding rebels, crazed villains and sneering charmers on screen. Soon he’ll star opposite Kristen Wiig in a remake of “Toni Erdmann.” He’s a fixture of American cinema and the Lakers courtside seating. For his 80th birthday, we aimed to rank all of Jack’s major, already iconic roles, from worst to best.
“Man Trouble” (1992)
“Man Trouble” is a ridiculous screwball crime comedy in which Nicholson and Ellen Barkin get upstaged by horny dogs. It seems impossible the same guy who did “Five Easy Pieces” made this.
“A Safe Place” (1971)
This bizarre, formless ’70s relic based on a play stars Tuesday Weld and Orson Welles opposite Nicholson about a girl living a fantasy in which she never grows up.
“The Terror” (1963)
Nicholson gives a stiff performance in this Roger Corman picture opposite Boris Karloff, but he gets to kiss a woman who transforms into a corpse.

We’re already at day five of the Steam Summer Sale, and this is about the time I start running out of jokes. How many ways can I tell you that I’ve spent too much money, or that my wallet is hurting? Besides, you deserve better. So I’m going to take this a different way. “What is the martial art expert’s favorite beverage?” “Kara-tea”…. Ok yeah that was horrible. Let’s pretend this never happened.

When DC Comics launched their full universe reboot The New 52, the company maintained that their run of ongoing titles would always number fifty two. Initially this had fans questioning how they would handle cancellations, but this was answered by a one in/one out kinda deal, with a cancelled title been replaced by a new one. We’ve seen this with Hawk And Dove, Men Of War, and others receiving the chop, and their replacements, with notable inclusions Batman Incorporated and Dial H, hitting shelves in May.
Now a new anthology title, National Comics, has been announced, but as of yet there is no word on what title will be cancelled.
As reported by Wired , the new title, a revival of a series which first saw print in the 1940′s, will focus on a different character every issue, telling done-in-one stories featuring the more obscure character who call the DC Universe their home.

The “new” series, which actually began before the events of Flashpoint, is one of the several titles that will be shipping as part of DC’s ‘second wave’ of ‘New 52′ books after the cancellation of Men of War, Mister Terrific, O.M.A.C., Hawk and Dove, Blackhawks and Static Shock.

DC Comics has unveiled our first look at some of the new interior artwork by Chris Burnham that will be featured in the highly-anticipated return of Grant Morrison’s Batman, Incorporated. One of the biggest sour notes to coincide with the announcement that DC Comics would be relaunching its titles was the premature cancellation of Morrison’s Batman, Inc series.
Following Batman’s global recruitment of hero-worthy individuals to help “franchise” the Batman ideal, the series managed to launch the identities of several new characters who expanded on the DC Universe Bat-family and even managed to grab a few solo books for themselves amongst DC’s relaunched titles.
Speaking with The Source, series editor Mike Marts had the following to say about the upcoming title.
Grant Morrison’s new ‘Batman, Incorporated’ series is the final, unbelievable act of a saga six years in the making,” Marts told The Source. “Along...

It was only a matter of time, really, for Hawk And Dove.
The painfully mediocre title will be one of six books that DC is canceling to make room for a ‘new wave’ of comics added to their New 52 roster. The other sacrifices are O.M.A.C, Blackhawks, Mister Terrific, Static Shock, and Men Of War. Fortunately, none of these are the wonderful worlds of monstrous mayhem praised in our previous article. Jeff Lemire even plans to bring his Frankenstein character into the eighth and final issue of Men Of War, giving monster kids an extra reason to buy it.
On another bright side, one of the replacements in store at DC will be Dial H, helmed by China Miéville (Kraken, Ironside, The City & The City)—one of the best science fiction/fantasy writers working today—in his comics debut, with art by Mateus Santoluoco. It should be fascinating...

DC Comics has announced six new titles to launch in May. The new series will replace the six that are to be cancelled from the original relaunched New 52. Batman Incorporated will return alongside Earth 2, G.I. Combat, The Ravagers, Dial H and World's Finest. O.M.A.C., Hawk and Dove, Blackhawks, Men of War, Static Shock and Mister Terrific will all end in April with their 8th issues. Grant Morrison's Batman Incorporated will continue with illustrations by Chris Burnham. Dial H is a series about an everyman who gains superpowers that will be written by award-winning novelist China Miéville - who was once lined up to write Swamp Thing - alongside artist Mateus Santoluoco.

DC Comics has announced that they will be canceling six titles from the ‘New 52′ lineup but will be adding six additional titles to keep the magic 52 number alive. The six titles that have landed on the chopping block include Men of War, Mister Terrific, O.M.A.C., Hawk and Dove, Blackhawks, and Static Shock, all of which have struggled terms of sales and quality when compared to the other titles in DC’s ‘New 52′.
Each of these series will wrap up their runs with the release of issue #8 and will then make room for the following six new titles to take their place.
Batman Incorporated – Writer: Grant Morrison. Artist: Chris Burnham. The acclaimed ongoing writer of Action Comics, Grant Morrison, presents a fresh take on Batman Incorporated, in which the Batman brand is franchised globally in preparation for a major international threat. When DC’s New 52 launched last year, I asked myself: will they still cancel a book due to poor sales? Seeing that there publication slate only consist of 52 books (and a handful of miniseries). Well, it seems DC have come up with a logical solution to this dilemma: cancel one book to make way for another. One out, one in style.
Reported by Bleeding Cool, six of the launch titles from DC’s universe wide reboot, Hawk and Dove, O.M.A.C., Mister Terrific, Men Of War, Static Shock, and Blackhawks, have all gotten the axe and will end with their eighth issue.
In May, the six new series will start: Batman Incorporated, continuing the story Grant Morrison started in the pre-New 52 universe. Earth Two, featuring the Justice Society from a parallel Earth. Dial H, a tale of transferrable super powers based on the old series Dial H For Hero.

DC Comics has announced that Batman and Detective Comics will increase in price. The titles will jump from 32 pages to 40 pages in tandem with the rise from $$2.99 (£1.94) to $$3.99 (£2.59). Scott Snyder and Tony Daniel's Batman titles will join Justice League, Action Comics, Men of War and All-Star Western in the higher price bracket. DC Comics executive vice president of sales, marketing and business development John Rood told Newsarama that there was a "story reason" behind the price rise. Scott Snyder confirmed that (more)...

We hold in our hands the covers for DC Comics this March. As a child of four can plainly see, these comics have been hermetically sealed in a Cgc 9.8 slab, and they’ve been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under a giant pile of Christmas tinsel since noon today.
What do we have worth noting? The first fill-in artist on Justice League, although Gene Ha is certainly no slouch in that department. We also have new writers on Firestorm and Green Arrow, new backups in Justice League and Action Comics, and the DC 52 hits lucky number 7.
Shall we see who is the fariest of them all? Oh indeedy, let’s do!
As usual, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.

Although DC Comics published several stories set following the war, in which Rock became a covert operative for the United States government, Kanigher has repeatedly insisted that Sgt. Rock perished (more)...
