There are no shortage of movies and TV shows that were affected in some way by 9/11. "The Simpsons" stopped playing repeats of its New York episode, which prominently featured the Twin Towers, several years after the event. Action movies featuring any sort terrorism storyline (like "Collateral Damage" and "Bad Company") were significantly delayed. Stand-up comedy was also forced to adjust; just days before the tragedy, George Carlin had a comedy album unfortunately titled "I Kinda Like It When a Lotta People Die," which had to be shelved indefinitely.
Sam Raimi's 2002 film "Spider-Man" was also affected, especially since so much of its filming wrapped up as early as June 2001. Its hero has famously always lived in New York City, and his ability to swing from webs throughout the city skyline naturally included a few shots of the World Trade Center. The early promotion for the movie, released before 9/11, prominently featured...

Chicago – It was another city in another time when Andrew Davis directed his first film “Stony Island” in 1970s Chicago. The film was released in 1978 to acclaim, but faded into the mist of cinema. Andrew Davis is back in his hometown to introduce “Stony Island” at the Gene Siskel Film Center on Friday, November 17th, 2023. For tickets and info, click Stony Island.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Lovingly filmed on the gritty 1970s streets in the Chicago of Andy Davis, the film features his brother Richard Davis as Ritchie, a white boy guitarist trying to break into a Southside rhythm and blues band that cooks with its own brand of Windy City soul. Based a bit on his brother’s actual circumstances, the film features actual singers and players of the era, including a magnificent performance by Gene Barge as Percy Price, the centerpiece cat in the story who ends up in a fate of celebration.

Once again, the caprices of the Netflix algorithm have somehow unearthed a little talked-about near-bomb from a decade ago and pushed it right to the top of the streaming service's popularity charts. In mid-April of 2023, the Kim Jee-woon action flick "The Last Stand" with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Johnny Knoxville was Netflix's #1 movie. In this case, it is a minor work of justice, as "The Last Stand" was actually a pretty good movie. It was bright, upbeat, enjoyably violent, and boasted a fun cast of notable supporting players, including the inimitable Luis Guzmán, Jaime Alexander, and Rodrigo Santoro. Forest Whitaker played an FBI guy. The film was a modest critical success (it boasts a 61% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes), but only made $43 million at the worldwide box office. It passed from the public consciousness pretty quickly after that.
"The Last Stand" was, of course, meant to be something of a comeback for Schwarzenegger.

Matt Reeves' 2022 film "The Batman" featured the title character in yet another rebooted continuity, this time even darker and grittier than ever before. Batman (Robert Pattinson) was seen as a pale-skinned, stoic outsider, rarely making public appearances as Bruce Wayne, preferring to use his fists to ignite fear in the hearts of the criminal underground. He didn't smile and seemed incapable of experiencing happiness. The Riddler (Paul Dano) was reimagined to resemble the real-life Zodiac Killer, and murdered people on the regular. Gotham City was more corrupt than ever, and it is tantalizingly suggested at one point that Bruce Wayne's late father might have opened the door for massive corruption to leak into the city's legislature. Sadly, that moment is walked back.

Had Warner Bros. given Joel Schumacher an extra year to develop and shoot "Batman & Robin," it's reasonable to expect that he would've turned around another agreeably campy lark on par with "Batman Forever;" ergo, from the fans' perspective, it's probably a blessing that the studio rushed him from 1996's "A Time to Kill" straight into his second Dark Knight yarn. Had Schumacher been granted more time to refine the film with screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, he might've stuck with the franchise — which, spinning this alternate timeline forward, could've knocked George Clooney out of Steven Soderbergh's "Out of Sight" and obviated the need for Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins." A series-hobbling Bat-bomb is a more than acceptable tradeoff here.
There were, however, certain elements of "Batman & Robin" that were always going to fall flat, most notably the casting of Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze. Had Warner Bros. been smart...

Mackey died Saturday at Calvary Hospital in Brooklyn after a battle with myelodysplastic syndrome, a form of blood cancer, longtime business partner Cathy Sandrich Gelfond told The Hollywood Reporter.
She received one Artios Award for her work on A League of Their Own (1993) and shared another one with Sandrich Gelfond for Smokin’ Aces (2006) — she collected 15 Artios nominations in all — and the pair were featured in the eye-opening 2012 documentary Casting By.

When we last reported on Cry MacHo, the American neo-Western drama directed and produced by Clint Eastwood, who also stars in the film, Warner Brothers had announced an October 21st opening date. Now they’ve moved it up to September 17th and released a poster and this new trailer:
No matter what age he is, Clint Eastwood will always be a cowboy at heart.
The 91-year-old actor is back in the saddle for his upcoming movie Cry Macho, a Western drama set in 1979. Along with producing and directing the film, Eastwood stars as Mike Milo, a one-time rodeo star and washed-up horse breeder who takes a job from an ex-boss to bring the man’s young son home from Mexico. Forced to take the backroads on their way to Texas, the unlikely pair face an unexpectedly challenging journey, during which the world-weary horseman finds unexpected connections and his own sense of redemption.

Prolific movie producer David Foster, who collaborated with Steve McQueen on “The Getaway” and shepherded Robert Altman’s “McCabe and Mrs. Miller,” died Monday in Los Angeles. He was 90.
Foster started in the business as a publicist representing McQueen along with Peter Sellers, Richard Attenborough, Shirley MacLaine, Andy Williams and Sonny and Cher.

Cinematographer Adam Greenberg, who earned an Oscar nomination for his work on James Cameron’s “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” began to learn the craft of filmmaking working in the Israeli Army’s photo section.
Landing a technician job in a one-room production lab in Tel Aviv, he used his downtime wisely. “Reading old copies of Cinematographer magazine was my training,” says Greenberg (born Grinberg), who wound up in the Middle East at age 3, after fleeing from the Nazi war machine in his native Krakow in 1942 with his two sisters. “The articles taught me how to shoot newsreels.” Using “short ends” — partial rolls of unexposed film stock left in a camera — he applied techniques he learned from the magazine and processed the film himself.
Eventually earning an assistant’s job, Greenberg interned on David Perlov’s seminal 1963 short documentary “In Jerusalem.” That led to work on Israel Becker’s far-out Hebrew-language musical comedy “The Flying Matchmaker.

Even if you’re not a horror-film fanatic, you’ve heard about The Hunt. A grisly-looking, modern grindhouse film, it was supposed to come out through Universal Pictures at the end of September. The plot was said to feature wealthy liberals — as portrayed by Hilary Swank’s well-dressed villain — who kidnap jus’-folks types and put them into a forested compound where they’re picked off one by one. Originally titled, per The Hollywood Reporter, Red State vs. Blue State, the movie seems to boast a comparable mixture of paranoia,...

We’ve always known that when it comes to impressions, Bill Hader can do anyone.
But for those who don’t know, what he wonderfully flaunts in season 2 of HBO’s Barry is his riveting finesse for directing action scenes across two episodes, “ronny/lily” and the finale “berkman>block”, literally reminiscent of James Mangold’s work on Logan and Michael Mann’s cinematic crime oeuvre.
It’s a wonderful evolution for Hader who started off as a Pa on such action pics as Dwayne Johnson’s Scorpion King and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Collateral Damage, and is now the guy who gets to call “action”.
Hader’s Emmy-nominated directed and written episode “ronny/lily” follows the actor’s hitman Barry, who after being blackmailed by Detective John Loach (John Pirruccello), is forced to take Ronny Proxin (Daniel Bernhardt), the guy who is having an affair with Loach’s wife. I tend to be an absolutist when it comes to matters of censorship, and if the decision by Universal Pictures to cancel the Sept. 27 release of “The Hunt” was a case of censorship, pure and simple, then I’d be against it. But I believe, in this instance, that the word censorship would be misapplied. There is censorship and there is timing, and in the case of “The Hunt,” a politically charged thriller about a group of “globalist elites” who hunt down people for sport, you could argue that a movie studio got caught up in a perfect storm of disastrous timing that would have made the film’s release, as scheduled, seem less a provocation than a brazen act of insensitivity.

Universal is putting the brakes on the marketing for their Blumhouse release The Hunt in the wake of recent mass shootings which have taken the lives of 34 people in El Paso, Texas; Dayton, Ohio; and Gilroy, California.
“Out of sensitivity to the attention on the country’s recent shooting tragedies, Universal Pictures and the filmmakers of The Hunt have temporarily paused its marketing campaign and are reviewing materials as we move forward,” said a studio rep in a statement.
The pic’s release date will remain unchanged for the Sept. 27 thriller which follows 12 red-state strangers who wake up in a clearing and realize that they’re being hunted by liberals. Betty Gilpin and Oscar winner Hilary Swank play women on opposite sides of the political spectrum, conservative and liberal, who are targeting each other.

Mary Jane Paul, Queen of Self-Sabotage™, has struck again.
The fourth season finale of Being Mary Jane buried its titular news anchor under increasingly mounting pressure, as Justin and Kara’s ongoing Game of Thrones — or at least Game of Offices — came down to her tie-breaking vote. Would she choose Justin, the man who (at this point) can give her everything she’s always wanted? Or would she choose Kara, her “ride or die” since Day 1?

Sony Classical proudly announces the release of The Dark Tower (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) featuring the music of the prolific Dutch composer Tom Holkenborg. The soundtrack will be released digitally on July 28 and on CD on August 4. The movie opens in theaters nationwide on August 4.
About the film and soundtrack, Tom Holkenborg says: “Dark Tower is an incredible mix of horror, fantasy and western, it inhabits a unique and singular world, human and personal, yet also other, and the score had to try and reflect this. It was a fascinating project to work on, and an honor trying to score the words and imagination of the great Stephen King.”
There are other worlds than these. Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, the ambitious and expansive story from one of the world’s most celebrated authors, makes its launch to the big screen.

This can’t be what Arnold Schwarzenegger imagined 2017 to look like: Sure, there’s a reality star in the White House, the Chicago Cubs are World Series champions, and his arch-rival (/best celebrity friend), Sylvester Stallone, is a recent Academy Award nominee. Yet for the ex-governor of California, far more confounding is how he became an ex-celebrity.
Schwarzenegger spent his acting life amassing a domestic box office of more than $1.8 billion. That haul came from comedies, like “Twins” ($111 million); science fiction, like “Total Recall” ($119 million) and “Terminator 2” ($204 million); or — his bread and butter — action flicks a la “True Lies” ($146 million) and “Eraser” ($101 million). But one unfortunate connection for all of Schwarzenegger’s films grossing $100 million-plus: They were all made before the year 2000.

When a story has all the right elements to draw an audience in – political intrigue, emotional drama, philandering government officials – then it’s only a matter of time before it finds its way onto a screen of some size, somewhere. Such is the hope of producers Ron Senkowski and Michael De Luca, who have just acquired the book Collateral Damage: Petraeus, Power, Politics And The Abuse Of Privacy, written by Jill Kelley.
Jill Kelley is an American socialite and Honorary Ambassador to the U.S. Central Command Coalition whose stalking complaint to the FBI in 2012 sparked a controversy that toppled the CIA Director, General David Petraeus. More than just a political scandal, however, the episode highlighted the issue of privacy with regard to government surveillance – as Jill Kelley explained to Deadline.

The question of “who authored this movie?” has rarely, if ever, come up in our essays about Brian De Palma, and any response to it is less an answer than communicating received wisdom — intelligently and passionately, but as received wisdom all the same. Let’s state this upfront: Redacted is a Brian De Palma movie in more than onscreen credit.

Oh. Em. Gee! Now that's how you do a summer finale!
There were twists, turns, revelations, and a heck of a lot of heartbreak. Thankfully, loose threads were tied and questions were answered. Any reservations that they would leave us disgruntled and in the dark were nullified on The Fosters Season 4 Episode 10.
It was a fantastic final installment to an occasionally unbalanced season.
The Foster-Adams family are notorious for making questionable decisions. Brandon and Callie Some more than others. Sometimes, the characters can skate by, just barely facing any real repercussions for their actions.
The aptly named "Collateral Damage" rectified that pesky little problem.
As I mentioned in the review for The Fosters Season 4 Episode 9, Brandon's road to Juilliard was integral to the series since the beginning. Unfortunately, it took a detour with the Courtney drama. Arguably, when it should have mattered the most.

Note: There are no spoilers for Captain America: Civil War in play here. We're just going by what's in the trailers, folks. Collateral damage. Whether intentional or not, that phrase has been a powerful motivator for both the DC and Marvel Cinematic Universes over the past few years. The arrival of super-powered beings – be it Superman in Man of Steel or The Avengers in the McU’s Phase One – has forced humanity to reflect on how much damage we’re willing to incur to allow these "heroes" to keep us safe. And that conversation comes to a boiling point in Captain America: Civil War. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) opposes the Sokovia Accords, a government bill meant to police the Avengers and limit where and when they can fight. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), on the flip side, sees a need for such ...

In 2008, Suzanne Collins released “The Hunger Games” into the world. Four years later the movie would cement Jennifer Lawrence as a blockbuster star. But all good things must come to an end. Last year the final installment — “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II” — brought the entirety of Panem society crashing down. If you had read the books, you probably joined in the discussions about whether the film would dare go as far as the novels to show that war rarely has winners. Well, they did it. They dared to blur the line between heroes and villains. In the clip above — exclusive to HitFix Harpy ahead of the home video release — even Katniss isn’t immune to succumbing to her darker instincts. HitFix Harpy is also happy to announce the “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II” Digital HD and Blu-Ray Combo Pack release date! The final chapter can...
