What do the 25th and 75th Tony Awards have in common? The landmark Stephen Sondheim/George Furth musical “Company,” Angela Lansbury and the beloved tuner “The Music Man.”
The gender-bender revival of “Company” is considered the front-runner for the Tony for Best Musical Revival as well as featured actress for Broadway legend Patti LuPone who brings down the house with “Ladies Who Lunch.” Elaine Stritch originated the LuPone’s character of Joanne; her rendition of “Ladies Who Lunch” is considered one of the indelible show-stopping numbers in Broadway history. Stritch was considered a shoo-in for lead actress but lost to Helen Gallagher for the revival of -the 1920s musical “No, No Nanette.” Go figure. Gallagher was good, but she wasn’t as great as Stritch.
The original “Company” waltzed into the Tony Awards — which took place at the Palace Theatre on March 28, 1971 — with a whopping 14 nominations and won six including Best Musical,...

No matter how many streaming platforms seem to pop up and demand your attention and subscription dollars, there are incredibly still movies that are just…missing. Not for streaming, not for rental, not for digital purchase, nothing. These movies are simply unavailable digitally. Maybe you can catch a cable broadcast or can find a DVD lying around, because chances are you’re not seeing a repertory screening of these either right now.

It's hard to believe it now, but a decade ago the Marvel Cinematic Universe was merely a twinkle in Kevin Feige's eye. Today, McU offerings are blockbuster staples, with the likes of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and more providing film fans with thundering entertainment and a connected universe culminating in the Avengers movies.
With Age of Ultron on the horizon, we've gone back through the 10 Marvel films to-date to rank them all from worst to best. Read on to find out our verdict, then join the discussion in the comments below.
10. Iron Man 2 (2010)
If Iron Man was a savvy exercise in kick-starting a shared cinematic universe, then its sequel brought everything crashing back down with a sharp, painful thud. Overstuffed with new characters, multiple plot strands and far-too-much in the way of Avengers set-up, Iron Man 2 is a step down from its predecessor in practically every way.

Kenneth Branagh chats to us about directing Cinderella, Cate Blanchett, Patrick Doyle and his favourite Jason Statham film.
With an opening weekend that topped $70m in the Us, Kenneth Branagh may have the hit of his movie directing career on his hands with his live action Cinderella take. It's a strong film too, that finally makes it to the UK this week. And ahead of its release, he spared us some time for a natter about it...
I think I've worked out what you're up to. I've worked out your ruse. You do Thor, Cinderella and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. Three different juggernauts, aimed at three different segments of the market, opening your work up to an audience that may otherwise not be familiar with it.
This is all about selling DVDs of Peter's Friends, isn't it?
[Laughs] That would be a lovely by-product.

In honor of "Betrayal"'s Broadway opening, the Film Society of Lincoln Center has fashioned a Pinter-centric program, presenting some of the best adaptations of the Englishman's work, in addition to his own screenplays. Pinter's career as a playwright began with a production of "The Room" in 1957, and eventually spanned more than 50 years, netting him the 2005 Nobel Prize for Literature and the French Légion d'honneur in 2007. His best-known plays include "The Birthday Party" (1957), "The Homecoming" (1964), and "Betrayal" (1978), each of which he adapted for the screen. His screenplay adaptations of others' works include "The Servant" (1963), "The Go-Between" (1970), "The French Lieutenant's Woman" (1981), "The Trial" (1993), and "Sleuth" (2007).“The Broadway production of one of Harold Pinter’s masterpieces, 'Betrayal,' is sure to be one of the theatrical events of the year, and provided the perfect occasion for us to revisit Pinter’s body of work for the cinema” said Gavin...

Walt Disney Pictures has announced that director Kenneth Branagh has begun shooting their live-action adaptation of Cinderella at Pinewood Studios in London. They've also released the first image from the film featuring Lily James (Downton Abbey) in the title role. There's no doubt that Branagh is going to do some great things with this film. This is the official synopsis:
The story of Cinderella follows the fortunes of young Ella whose merchant father remarries following the tragic death of her mother. Keen to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother Lady Tremaine and her daughters Anastasia and Drisella into the family home. But, when Ella's father suddenly and unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet,...

‘Tis the season… for costly 3D animated blockbusters! The newest animated confection to roll out of the major studio pipeline, just a few short weeks after the sweetly charming retro-romp “Wreck-It Ralph,” is “Rise of the Guardians,” the last film from DreamWorks Animation to be distributed by Paramount Pictures (next year, Fox will take over those duties). “Rise of the Guardians” collects various characters from mythology and folklore and puts them together into an “Avengers”-style super-team (Alec Baldwin is Santa Claus, Chris Pine is Jack Frost, Hugh Jackman is the Easter Bunny and Isla Fisher is the Tooth Fairy), to ward off the evil boogeyman Pitch (Jude Law). Is “Rise of the Guardians” the stuff of legend, or merely something that will (ever-so-briefly) get you away from your more annoying family members this holiday season? Let's find out. It’s surprising just how many actors have tried their hands at directing. Most make one or two pet projects and than slink back to the day job (Ahem, Tom Hanks’ Larry Crowne… I say no more!), whilst others carve out an interesting second career behind the camera.
Below is what I feel are the top 10 actors turned directors….
10. Paddy Considine
Films: Tyrannosaur.
It might be risky starting this list with a director with only one feature film under his belt, but when that film is 2011’s Tyrannosaur, it is entirely justified. Building on his superb Bafta award winning short film Dog Altogether, Tyrannosaur is an incredibly emotional watch. Considine lets his camera stand back and devotes the film to his cast, which includes Peter Mullen in a career best turn and revelation Olivia Coleman.
What’s next: Nothing on the radar just yet, but hopefully we wont have to wait to long!

Actor-director Kenneth Branagh was initially a curious choice to direct Marvel Entertainment's big-budget adaptation of Thor, but after making the movie one of the biggest comic book movie hits of the summer, it was surprising that Branagh decided not to return for Thor 2. Even lead actor Chris Hemsworth admitted that he was "really disappointed" with Branagh's choice not to return, though Branagh later explained that his decision was "simply timing."
In a recent interview with Variety, Branagh explained why he decided to direct Thor in the first place.
I have been led by my passion for individual projects, but there's no question that having put my heart, body and soul into [previous directorial efforts] As You Like It, The Magic Flute and Sleuth, and finding that the world wasn't that interested, there was definitely a sense with Thor that this time I'd like to put heart, body and soul into a movie...

Before Sunset’s Julie Delpy has found her next project. Variety reports that she is directing a biopic about the Clash frontman Joe Strummer titled The Right Profile. Simon Halfon (Sleuth). Delpy may end up starring in the film as well, since she often stars in the films she directs.
An icon in the British punk movement, Strummer died a month before he and the band were to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Not much is known about the biopic, but the idea is to “focus on Strummer's life and his planned disappearance from the public spotlight in 1982.” The film is the same name as the song that appeared on the Clash's 1979 album London Calling."
I am a huge fan of the Clash so this is a movie I would like to see. Delpy is a great actress, but I have never seen anything she has directed.

After Kenneth Branagh walked away from the chance to helm Thor 2 for Marvel Studios, most speculated that he.d gravitate toward something smaller, more intimate, and character driven in an effort to cleanse his palette of Norse mythology and celestial special effects. Those people were right. Variety reports that Branagh is contemplating The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, a romance that takes place immediately after WWII and is set both in London and on the island of Guernsey. Don Roos (Bounce, Marley & Me) is writing the adaptation of a New York Times bestseller that was penned by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer. The film has been set up at Fox 2000. Branagh has previosuly proven to be comfortable shifting between larger-budgeted productions (usually Shakespeare) and smaller-scale ensemble pieces, such as when he went from Henry V to the excellent mystery Dead Again, or from the self-contained Sleuth...

Going to as many movies as I do, I do everything I can to ensure that seeing a new one is as spontaneous an experience as possible. That means that I’ll generally try to avoid knowing very much about it when I walk in. So it wasn’t until I sat down at a preview screening of Thor, right before the movie started, that I actually found out that it was directed by Kenneth Branagh. I literally did a jaw-dropping double take. It was as if you’d told me that the upcoming Spider-Man reboot was going to be...

I didn’t know it until I saw it, but I have been waiting for a summer movie like Thor for a long time. It is fun, far more fun than any comic adaptation I have seen in years. Admittedly, I say that as someone who does not read a lot of comics and is not familiar with the source material. And to me, that is the beauty of this film. This movie knows its material is not as invested in a legion of fans such as follow Batman or Superman, and its British director brings to it a distantiation that allows for investment in the fun of it all: the outrageous narration, exaggerated and impossible action sequences, and actors who can just let go and enjoy the ride without any pressure while still maintaining their integrity and talent. This, my friends, is what a summer movie should be: exciting,...

Having missed the press screening of Thor because I was on holiday in Prague, I'm hoping to see the movie later today at one of special public previews ahead of its formal release on April 27.
But, in the meantime, the Press Association has unveiled its verdict on the film so I'm publishing it here to start the ball rolling and give readers some food for thought. Please do not copy and paste this entire review elsewhere.
Here's what the Press Association reviewer Damon Smith had to say:
Thor (12A, 114 mins) Action/Thriller/Romance/Comedy. Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgard, Kat Dennings, Clark Gregg, Colm Feore, Ray Stevenson, Idris Elba, Jaimie Alexander, Tadanobu Asano, Joshua Dallas, Rene Russo. Director: Kenneth Branagh.
Released: April 27 (UK & Ireland)
Kenneth Branagh returns to the director's chair after the disappointing remake of Sleuth for a special effects-laden romp based on the popular Marvel Comics superhero.

As the time ticks on towards this year’s fest, the official Cannes Film Festival website has just sent me a Newsletter informing me of the Avengers style band of filmy people who will make up this year’s Grand Jury- lead in Captain America style (albeit a grumpy and grizzly version now) by Robert DeNiro. Among the list of eight are stellar actors Uma Thurman and Jude Law (stellar provided we forget the other Avengers movie, and the remake of Sleuth), writer/director Oliver Assayas (Carlos) and director Johnnie To (Election). The full list is as follows: Martina Gusman (actress and producer, Argentina) Nansun Shi (producer, Hong Kong/China) Uma Thurman (actress, scriptwriter, producer, USA) Linn Ullmann (writer, literary critic, Norway Olivier Assayas (director, France) Jude Law (actor, producer, UK) Mahamat Saleh Haroun (director, Chad) Johnnie To (director, producer, Hong Kong/China) What the names mean to the likely winners isn’t clear yet, but...

Despite the good weather, the Channing Tatum-Amanda Seyfried weepie managed to steal the top spot from incumbents Clash of the Titans and How to Train Your Dragon
The winner
Sunny skies once again deterred audiences from congregating in darkened cinemas, but there was nevertheless a star performer among the new releases. Dear John, a romantic drama adapted from a novel by The Notebook author Nicholas Sparks, benefited from a clear audience to target with marketing and publicity. Its opening, a shade under £2m, was enough to grab the top spot, although it's worth remembering that £722,000 of that tally came from previews on Wednesday and Thursday. Without those extra takings, Dear John would have landed third, behind Clash of the Titans and How to Train Your Dragon.
The result enhances Channing Tatum's status as a box-office star. His bare-knuckle boxing drama Fighting opened with £991,000 last May, and expensive...

Hopkins will play Odin, the king of Asgard and the father of Thor and Loki. Chris Hemsworth is playing Thor, Tom Hiddleston plays Loki and Natalie Portman – Jane Foster, his human love interest.
In the film, Thor’s arrogance and recklessness re-ignite an ancient war, so he’s cast out of Asgard and down to Earth. There, as his human form Donald Blake, he meets a nurse named Jane Foster. When Loki comes to Earth Thor is forced to take up the hammer and fight him.
Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend) and Zack Stentz penned the script. Kenneth Branagh (The Magic Flute, Sleuth) will direct Thor with a theatrical release set for May 20, 2011.
Anthony Hopkins will next be seen playing Benicio Del Toro’s father in “The Wolfman” which will be released in February.

Casting is in full-force this month for Marvel's next big comic adaptation, the Kenneth Branagh directed Thor, which means that you will undoubtedly be bombarded with more than a few "this person is auditioning" stories. However, it is fun and I would like to indulge you by breaking down some of the names who've been named in the past few days. Dominic Cooper The most solid of these rumors is Mamma Mia! star Dominic Cooper, who is doing press for his role in Lone Scherfig's An Education. He talked to Movieline this week, and it was revealed that he's been studying for an audition for the film. When probed as to what part he might play, Cooper and interviewer Kyle Buchanon settled on the part of Fandral the Dashing, one of the Warriors Three. All...

Words on the street are, Jude Law and Robert De Niro are going to be seen having a part in Marvel's "Thor". According to Ain't It Cool News, "Valkyrie" actor Matthias Schweighofer has tossed in the names of those two actors into the film's cast ensemble in a recent interview with the German edition of GQ.

Robert De Niro and Jude Law have joined the cast of Kenneth Branagh's Thor movie, it's being claimed.
Ain't It Cool News says it received a tip-off about an interview with actor Matthias Schweighofer (pictured) in the November edition of GQ magazine in Germany.
In it, the 28-year-old actor apparently says he is in the running for a part in Thor and reveals that De Niro and Law have already been cast in the film, which is set for release in May 2011.
At present, this is all unconfirmed and their roles are unspecified. The article is not on the website for German GQ, nor is it mentioned in the media interviews section on Matthias Schweighofer's official website.
Schweighofer starred with Branagh in Bryan Singer's Valkyrie. De Niro was in the Branagh-directed Frankenstein, Law in Branagh's Sleuth.

Star power seems to be a necessity for comic-book movies. The trend started back in 1978 with Superman: The Movie, when the formula was to find the right actor to portray Superman (as opposed to finding a star and putting him in the costume) and then surround Superman with big name talent—in that case Marlon Brando (Jor-El) and Gene Hackman (Lex Luthor).
It worked, and it worked brilliantly.
Nowadays there seems to be a greater emphasis on ensuring that all the major players — even the lead — have some name recognition, and to that end, Kenneth Branagh is apparently about to cast some big-name talent in his comic book-to-feature adaptation of Marvel's Thor. AICN reports that actor Matthias Schweighofer (Valkyrie) has revealed to GQ magazine that he is in the running for a role in Thor and that both Jude Law and Robert De Niro have already joined the cast.

Harold Pinter, one of the most acclaimed and innovative playwrights of the 20th century, passed away on Christmas Eve at age 78 after a battle with cancer. Pinter's plays took England by storm in the 1960s and his popularity rapidly expanded around the world. He was credited with bringing intimacy back into theatrical productions. His plays, such as The Caretaker, No Man's Land, The Homecoming and The Birthday Party, were generally claustrophobic affairs that dealt with tensions within dysfunctional families. The British-born Nobel Prize winner was often a lightening rod for controversy due to his radical, left-wing politics. Pinter once refused a knighthood from Prime Minister John Major's government because he so loathed conservative policies. In recent years, he publicly lambasted both the British and American governments over the Iraq War. Pinter was multi-talented and also wrote screenplays for such films as The Go-Between, The French Lieutenant's Woman, The Quiller Memorandum...

British actor Kenneth Branagh has confirmed he is to direct new comic book movie Thor.
The star - more famous for his roles onstage - has completed negotiations with Marvel bosses to helm the film, due for release in 2010.
Branagh's last big-screen directorial outing was 2007's Sleuth, starring Sir Michael Caine and Jude Law.
And he can't wait to take the challenge of directing a Hollywood blockbuster.
He says, "We're getting the story and visual effects together and all of that is very exciting."

Kenneth Branagh has finally opened up about Thor, the upcoming big screen adaptation of the Marvel character. Branagh, who stars in this month’s Valkyrie opposite Tom Cruise, signed on to helm the flick back in September. He spoke with MTV and revealed why he wanted to work on the project and that recent casting rumors, one that put Journeyman star Kevin McKidd in the lead role, are still premature. “To work on a story about one of the immortals, Gods, extraordinary beings, inter-dimensional creatures,” he enthused. “There’s science fiction and science fact and fantasy all woven into one. It’s based on Norse legends which Marvel sort of raided in a brilliant way.” “There’s been lots of talk [about casting] — I sound like a politician — but we are too early at this stage. We’re getting the story and the visual effects together and all of that is very exciting.

I'm going to make a confession. Back when the news first hit that Kenneth Branagh was going to direct Marvel's Thor, I pessimistically wrote that "Branagh seems like the worst choice to direct a comic book movie since Joel Schumacher." Now that I've seen Valkyrie, however, my opinion has changed. Watching Branagh act in that film has made me change my opinion about him. Maybe it was just the lingering sour taste of Sleuth that made me so opposed to Branagh, but for whatever reason, watching him in Valkyrie made me slightly more confident. Since the news first broke in September, Branagh has been keeping quiet about the project, but MTV finally got him to break down and talk about directing "The Mighty Thor." No, the title hasn't changed, as Branagh clarifies, "I think it will be Thor." So why did he want to direct a high profile comic book movie?...

It’s likely the biggest news of the day: Kenneth Branagh is in talks to direct Marvel Comics’ big-screen adaptation of “Thor,” according to Variety.
The film, written by Mark Protosevich, follows partially disabled medical student Donald Blake, who discovers he has an alter ego as the powerful Norse warrior Thor.
Branagh is indeed a quite surprising pick, especially because we haven’t really seen him direct a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster. His most recent directorial effort was “Sleuth.”
The trade said Marvel would soon announce a distributor for the project, which is expected to hit theaters 2010. The studio will self-finance the film as well.
Branagh’s other directing credits include the 1994 version of “Frankenstein,” “Hamlet” and the Oscar-winning ”Henry V.” In front of the camera, he most recently starred in “Five Children and It.” He will next be seen in Bryan Singer’s WWII drama “Valkyrie.”...
