Ever since launching his career in 2002 with the independent action-horror thriller, Dog Soldiers—a bracing, fresh werewolves-vs.-soldiers exercise—the writer and director Neil Marshall has been devoted to genre filmmaking. His second film, The Descent, is a generally acknowledged modern horror classic, and since then he’s branched out to post-apocalyptic action, historical thrillers and high fantasy before returning again to horror.
His sixth and latest film, The Reckoning, stars Charlotte Kirk (who co-wrote the script) as a young woman who is accused of witchcraft in northern England in 1665 after losing her husband to the Great Plague. With its period setting and story of unjust persecution and hysteria directed against women in particular, The Reckoning (which just premiered on Shudder) channels some of the old Hammer Studios vibe, as well as that of iconic British films on the same topic like Witchfinder General.

Sadly, for those not interested in the behind-the-scenes drama of Hollywood, the stories that have been published about filmmaker Neil Marshall in recent months have been less about his creative work and more about personal matters. This drama includes behind-the-scenes turmoil that reportedly happened during his most recently released film, “Hellboy,” as well as the drama surrounding his real-life partner, Charlotte Kirk, that clouded the premiere of his new film, “The Reckoning.” However, this time, the news has nothing to do with his personal life and everything to do with his upcoming project, “The Lair.”

Last month, as the fate of ABC's Gcb hung in the balance, we were worried it would become a member of the "Gone Too Soon" club, TV shows that were snuffed out before they had a chance to flourish, or at least before we had a chance to grow tired of them.
Sadly, Gcb has gone to that big Upn in the sky, where it can run happily in the meadow with the likes of Firefly, Pushing Daisies, and Manimal.
While we mourn Gcb's loss, let's take a look at more shows that were ended too quickly. They were unappreciated at the the time, but they were either too good or too ... interesting ... not to have been offered the opportunity to flourish. Or flame out. Which is just as good.

Then you got a good idea of what Peter Stickles is all about! In his breakout role in Shortbus, Peter Stickles made stalking awfully damn cute! He followed that up with a controversial role in Watch Out. This year, Peter Stickles stars in two films for Full Moon Entertainment, Gingerdead Man 3-D: Saturday Night Cleaver & Evil Bong 3-D: The Wrath of Bond that are expected to re-establish Full Moon's presence as a viable producer of low budget horror films. Over the course of his career, Peter Stickles has had people talking about him. It might not have been all positive as the projects he has been have stirred up a wide variety of opinions, but the thing is, these projects have got...

David Moretti, who you may remember as the star of Here!TV's gay vampire soap opera, "The Lair," performs in his final night in the off-Broadway musical, "My Big Gay Italian Wedding," Saturday (Jan. 8). It was the TV and film actor's first time on stage and he almost turned it down from stage fright, but now he walks away feeling enriched by the experience.
"I feel like I can go back to L.A.," Moretti tells Zap2it. "And be a much more well-rounded actor and bring much more to the table. When you get on stage and you know you can't mess up, there's really nothing you can't do in film or TV."
Moretti will be ending his run as Andrew, who is Polish (though the actor is actually full Italian) and will do anything he can to prove his love for his Italian boyfriend among the crazy challenges of his beau's family.

First things first: It is Election Day in the United States, so make sure you vote, because my rights depend on it. And I’m selfish like that.
The Dallas Morning News has nominated out Ft. Worth Councilman Joel Burns to be their Texan of the Year. Councilman Burns has made national news since his inspiring It Gets Better speech during the council meeting.
18-year old Disney star Demi Lavato has dropped out of her international tour to check into a treatment center for “emotional and physical issues” according to a statement from her management.
I have to admit, Are They Doing It? is the most addictive time waster I’ve come across in a long, long time. Also, I’m a sick, sick person.
I’ve always had a soft spot for Rick Schroder since Silver Spoons. But I’m not sure him showing up on No Ordinary Family...

You would think Bigfoot battling a Chupacabra would be a bit of a mismatch given the incredible size difference between the two. Fred Olen Ray is nonetheless readying a David vs. Goliath clash between these two cryptid titans. Sasquatch vs. Chupacabra - place your bets!
Fred Olen Ray has just announced plans for the flick on his Retromedia message board, and an official Sasquatch vs. Chupacabra website is already online.
There's nothing on the website other than a "contact us" link and the following:
From director Fred Olen Ray (Sea Snakes, Turbulent Skies, The Lair) and producer Kimberly A. Ray (Woke Up Dead, Komodo Vs Cobra, Megaconda, Dante's Cove).
No other details at this time aside from the temporary artwork you see below. But it's Bigfoot grappling with a goatsucker; what more do you need?

What can I say about Sybil Danning that would be a surprise to anyone? Gorgeous, talented, fun to watch. In whatever project she appears, Danning is always completely committed. Watching her as I have over the years, I see not only chops, but a healthy sense of humor as well. I feel like she “gets it,” if that makes any sense. (And after this interview, I’m even more of a fan.) Courtesy of friend Fred Olen Ray, Danning joins all the vampire fun on The Lair in this third season.
Sean Abley: We’ve actually met very briefly—I moderated the Lair panel for the Fangoria Weekend of Horrors in La months ago. I was incredibly intimidated by meeting you. You’re Sybil Danning! The Guilty Pleasure Fairy visited me in my sleep recently and left The Lair: Season Three under my pillow. Woo-hoo! The Fred Olen Ray vampire-sex-club soap opera is back—now with 100 percent more Sybil Danning! Courtesy of the friendly folks at here! TV (I really wish they’d just break down and capitalize “Here”—seriously), which is currently airing the series on-demand, I had a chance to chat briefly with a few of the stars of this new season.
First up is Frankie Valenti, or, as he’s more widely known, adult-film star Johnny Hazzard. His bad-boy image has served him well in the adult world since 2003, and he has won several “Grabby” and GayVN Awards for his performances in videos like Detention and Wrong Side Of The Tracks. Part 2 of the Big Bear Horror Film Festival recap. Read Part 1 here.
Saturday
After being up way too late the night before watching Golden Girls and Sex And The City reruns in my hotel room (P.S., I’m totally gay), it was time to get back to the Big Bear Horror Film Festival for a really great film, Die-ner (Get It?).
Yes, the “Get It?” is part of the film title, which I’m now publicly begging the filmmakers to change. Why? Because this film is so much smarter than the title. Die-ner (Get It?) is a well directed, well written and well acted serial-killer-plus-zombie flick that makes great use of its limited resources. I don’t want to give too much away, but I definitely recommend Patrick Horvath’s awesome motion picture.
As we walk out of the theater for a quick break, J.T. Seaton* and Michael Simon* join our gay horror cabal.

Let me say up front that I’ve always found the here! TV soap opera Dante’s Cove to be pretty much unwatchable. If the point is to see undressed pretty people enacting out incomprehensible plots, why not just go direct to adult movies?
Let me also say upfront I’m also very tired of vampires, which I thought became overdone around the time of Lost Boys in 1987.
But I’ve always had a soft spot for at least the idea of The Lair, here! TV’s show about a coven of gay vampires, their gay vampire sex club, and the mortal reporter who investigates all of this.
I think the central concept is flat-out brilliant. Anne Rice (and many others) have been writing about vampires as some kind of coded “metaphor” for gay people for decades. So why the hell not just come out and make the damn vampires gay?...

I always love how screeners find their way to my doorstep. I'm headed out to get coffee and there's a screener pack, ready and waiting. Coming back from the grocery store? Screener. Trash run? Screeeeneer. It's like space aliens visit when I'm not looking. Or vampires...
Which brings me to my latest viewing: Season 3 of The Lair, Here! TV's supernatural soap about vampires running a sex club -- and eating the members. Last season, a power struggle resulted in the death of Colin (Dylan Vox), the bad-boy vamp, at the hands of Damian (Peter Stickles), the other bad, but suave, vamp and his long suffering, though endessly hot, mortal boyfriend Thom, played by David Moretti.
Talk about dysfunctional.
There was also a business with werewolf that didn't end well for the town sheriff, Trout, played by porn star Colton Ford, nor for Tim (Frankie Valenti), who lost his love to...

Above you can see "Tight Squeeze", one of the promos for the upcoming Vampire-Con taking place in Hollywood from August 14-16th. As you can tell from the the video, this convention is unlike most fantasy and sci-fi conventions, as they're openly courting the gay audience.
Scheduled highlights include tributes to Vampirella, a panel discussion titled "Why we love vampires: A brief history of the undead", and a panel discussion titled "Hot-blooded: Vampires & Sexuality" featuring The Lair stars Brian Nolan, David Moretti, Peter Stickles, and Dylan Vox.
What do you think? Intrigued enough to give it a try? I think it sounds like fun ... but if they were to throw in some Jason Stackhouse bare buns, I would so be there!

Since a bunch of you have asked, no, Series 4 of Dante's Cove has not started shooting yet. I checked. It is still in development for a Fall shoot. It's still a money-maker for Regent/here! so there's little doubt that cameras will roll on the naked and nearly naked flesh of all the denizens of DC sometime this year.
Dantes isn't one of my favorite shows. I applaud every year that another season gets produced. I truly love the fact that queer genre is being made, year in and year out. Like with the The Lair, it's awesome that there's an audience for the supernatural shenanigans on both shows. I just wish both shows were... better. Better written, better acted, better produced. I want our stuff to be great, regardless of the gayness of it. I've never been convinced that Dantes or The Lair does that.

When Tony asked me to moderate a panel on The Lair for at the Los Angeles Weekend of Horrors, I was thrilled. I participated in a bunch of panels at Gaylaxicon a couple years ago and had a ball because, let’s face it, I’m a bit of a ham. So the opportunity to be on a panel at a Fango con was an automatic, “Yes!”
As the date approached, I started to feel more and more nervous. I wondered if anyone would actually show up for this panel. I mean, The Lair is a fun show, but it’s on a Pay-Per-View network, and I would guess that ninety percent of its audience is more camp enthusiast than horror fanatic. Would there be any fans of The Lair actually attending the con? And more importantly, would there be any Glbt horror fans attending the con? Okay, yes, obviously...
