A fair shoot 'em up action flick
TheDome8122 March 2023
If you're looking for lots of blood, then you might enjoy this film. It's something we're seen a thousand times before. Only not as well done. It's basically about a team who break into a bank, looking for a container of deadly poison The team is working for a generic Middle-easterner.

The action centers around a vet, who's breaking up with his wife. When she goes to the bank with her daughter, they're taken hostage along with a bunch of other people. As luck would have it, Michael, the husband goes in to rescue them. It turns out, the leader of the hostage takers used to be an army buddy of his, who left him for dead in a battle in Syria.

So the two sides battle it out. And of course, it ends up with the two of them battling it out, mano-a-mano! It was not a bad flick overall. However the wife and daughter were absolutely horrible. They could have done a lot better.

Decent Movie, but Definitely Not Anything to Brag Home About
cartermichaelatkins24 December 2023
Last Resort is a decently good movie, though all of the blemishes of a budget film.

The acting is a bit poor with many of the dialogue between characters feeling disjointed and loosing the flow. But there are certain actors that performed better then others when it comes to this.

The visual affects are what you can expect from an average budget film, with it being alright with some of the smaller effects though showing its faults with the larger things (like breaking the law of physics.)

The story of the movie is alright but takes a couple of minutes to really start to make sense.

Overall, while not being a particularly amazing film or anything to brag home about, it's definitely not a terrible movie either. If you're looking for a decent budget film to watch, then this may be good for you.

Exactly what it should be
BandSAboutMovies14 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Directed and written by Jean-Marc Minéo, a former six-time kung fu champion of France, Europe and finally the world champion, Last Resort reminds me of the films released by Cannon-like labels after it went out of business, 1990s direct to video efforts that were all about action, that got the story out of the way as soon as possible. This is not a bad thing.

Michael Reed (Jon Foo) nearly died in Syria and ever since can't get himself off the couch. This former soldier has pushed his wife Kim (Julaluck Ismalone) away and she's taken their daughter Anna (Angelina Ismalone) to the bank and then out of his life. They're taken hostage by Islamic terrorists led by an American named Cooper (Clayton Norcross) who are really after a bioterror weapon in one of the safety deposit boxes. He didn't count on Michael -- who he knows, it turns out that Michael wasn't an ordinary soldier -- who starts killing his men one-by-one, as this movie echoes so much of Die Hard but yet, doesn't every action movie made after it do the same? For example, there's one cop who looks out for our hero when no one else believes in him.

There's enough fighting and guns in this -- including a sniper ending that I wish I'd seen in a crowded theater -- to satisfy most action fans. Sure, it's a by the numbers shoot 'em up run and gun film, but we don't get that many of those any more. I can look past the awkward line readings if I'm going to get stuff that moves this fast and looks this good.

Silly, predictable, no real story.
Scorpion_MI30 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie had a silly and nonsense plot.

No real story.

Bad acting and production and direction.

They did have very good hand o hand combat scenes.

Same ol' hollywood plots that we've seen over and over with not much added, gets really boring.

No twists. Hostages get shot in front the military and they watch.

British accent actor saves the day and the country's police and military can't do anything.

No real buildup.

So, I would not recommend this movie to be watched.

It was a waste of time.

It was a waste of rental.

I am not sure how some would even contemplate giving more than one star.

I ain't saying it's Die Hard....but it's well...

Warning: Spoilers
It seems like they wanted to make an action movie, and they couldn't decide what on the plot, so as a "Last Resort" they just used Die Hard as a model.

And you know, there is nothing wrong with that.

Similarities aside, this is a pretty good action movie. Jon Foo plays a former special forces soldier whose soon-to be ex- wife and daughter are taken hostage in a bank within a high rise building. In this case the robbers really are terrorist looking to get some poison gas which was placed in the vault. Foo must win the support of the police on the outside while dispatching the bad guys on the inside.

The highlight of the movie is the multiple great fighting sequences, especially one where he finds a bad guy masquerading as an escaped hostage (in a minor ode to Die Hard) and they proceed to have a hand-to-hand and knife battle. There were a few "wtf" issues like the cops simply watching hostages being executed on two occasions, a few continuity things where the good guys knew the bad guys plans without showing how, the horrible screaming of the wife as she was lowered down the side of the building and worst of all the ending where upon getting a body count of 47 dead terrorist he "knows one is missing" cause he pays attention. Along those same lines, him shooting the guy with the sniper rifle from what looked like 800 yards while there were what looked 10 swat team members 20 yards away was a little ridiculous.

Oh, I've got to add one other small ode to Die Hard - which I'd say has to be intentional as I can't imagine any action director or actor worth his salt not having seen the movie - after Foo shoots his first bad guy, as he's wearing sandals he checks the guys feet only to find them too small. He does later kill a terrorist with a bigger shoe size and takes his boots.

All-in-all, this was a very entertaining movie. I enjoyed watching it. I've seen movies with bigger name stars and bigger budgets that weren't nearly as good. I'll recommend it to my friends. It's a 6.5 and I'll for sure round it up to a 7.

Jon Foo
mwaz-3383010 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know why Jon Foo doesn't get more action roles. This movie is not a big Hollywood film clearly, but there is plenty of action to be had and the hand to hand scenes are just as good as the big budget films (except may the last one on the rooftop with the pen...that's just my humble opinion). I have loved Jon Foo action style since the ill fated "Rush Hour" tv show and I really enjoyed his Crackle original movie. I think he is a highly talented martial artist and I would love to see him in more roles. The right director and story he has amazing skill! This story may be predictable, but it still is a fun 90 ish minutes. The dialogue may lack, but again the action scenes are nice. The emotional aspects feel a bit forced, but aren't we here for the action anyway? Overall a solid 6 for me.

Action Packed
ivandster28 September 2023
Excellent gunfighting and hand-to-hand combat. The plot is fairly straightforward. A soldier on R and R fights about 50 villains to save his wife and daughter from terrorists who have taken over a bank in Thailand. The plot exists to serve the action, not the other way around. So sit back and enjoy the ride. The gunfighting is well choreographed and staged. I found it more realistic and the last few John Wicks. The two hand-to-hand fights are brutal, long, and also well choreographed. I'm now going to see what else John Foo has starred in to see if I've missed any good action shows. I watched one of his earlier films recently (Extraction) and was impressed by his skills. Will check to see if he's done anything else. One thing for sure, if you watch it you will not be bored.

Loved this movie. Watch it now.
djmike-6347426 December 2023
This movie was great. Almost from beginning to end. I don't love a lot of movies, but I loved this one. Jam packed with action. Gun play, grenades, bombs, hostages and a good deal of martial arts including knife play. There's some edge of your seat moments, remember this is a B movie. It's not Die Hard, but for a B movie I really enjoyed it. Pop the popcorn, dim the lights and watch the movie for what it is. Okay, This the part where I have said all that I need to say, but they force me to write 600 words. So you can stop reading now cuz I can't think of anything else worthwhile to say except.....Nuff Said Mike Out.
