Nicholas Tomnay got some buzz back in 2010 for his twisty thriller “The Perfect Host,” starring David Hyde Pierce as a dinner party host with an appetite for violence. But Tomnay hasn’t made another feature until now, with “What You Wish For.” And, to be expected, it’s another twisty thriller with some culinary flair.

"A bad dish from you and your life will end." Magnolia Pictures has revealed the official trailer for What You Wish For, an indie thriller from filmmaker Nicholas Tomnay, a follow-up to his first film The Perfect Host. This new one premiered at many genre fests: Fantasia, Fantastic Fest, FrightFest, A Night of Horror, Grimmfest, Celluloid Screams, and Screamfest previously before its upcoming release in theaters this May during the start of the summer. A down-on-his-luck chef with gambling problems flees to a Latin American villa, where he assumes the identity of another skilled chef. "A Hitchcockian, edge-of-your-seat descent into escalating moral compromise with generous servings of dark humour, shock, and surprise." The title is an obvious riff on the "be careful what you wish for" idiom, as the full synopsis hints that he "soon discovers just what Jack's been doing to maintain the lifestyle he so desperately craved." Uh oh.

Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, has acquired North American rights to “What You Wish For,” a new suspense-horror film written and directed by Nicholas Tomnay.
The film stars Nick Stahl (Showtime’s “Let the Right One In”) and had its world premiere at Fantasia Festival. Tamsin Topolski (“Slow Horses”) and Randy Vasquez (“America Has Fallen: Election Day”) also star. Magnet plans to release the film this summer. Tomnay previously co-wrote and directed “The Perfect Host,” which starred David Hyde Pierce.

There, his friend Jack (Brian Groh), a more prestigious chef with his own unique troubles, welcomes him into his home. Ryan has no idea how Jack’s able to afford his extravagant lifestyle, and...

The monkey's paw delivers in Nicholas Tomnay's "What You Wish For," a culinary chiller with strange and dangerous cravings. It's a Hitchcockian take on one-percenter conspiracies and ravenous appetites that cares more about characters caught hosting a unique dinner party experience. One man's cursed profession is another man's opportunity to start over, as Tomnay keys into how desperation can excuse even the most glaringly not-okay moral dilemmas. "What You Wish For" is a whodunit with sharp teeth and precise knife skills — except you already know who "dun it," and tension exists as the perpetrators try not to get caught.
Nick Stahl stars as hotel chain chef Ryan, who reunites with culinary school roommate Jack (Brian Groh) in the jungles of Latin America before his next assignment. Jack has been traveling the world as a private chef for years, padding his bank account with each high-end, well-paying feast. Ryan has been landlocked in America,...

David Hyde Pierce, best known for playing Dr. Niles Crane on “Frasier,” has joined the cast as Julia’s devoted husband Paul Child. The role was initially meant to be played by British actor Tom Hollander, however, he stepped away from the project due to scheduling conflicts, sources say.
Julia herself will still be played fellow Brit Sarah Lancashire.
The pilot will also star Brittany Bradford as Alice, Associate Producer of the show “I’ve Been Reading” who champions Julia after her appearance; Fran Kranz as Russ, producer on the show “I’ve Been Reading” who begrudgingly joins Julia’s cooking show; Fiona Glascott as Judith, the editor with a knack for pulling manuscripts out of the reject pile and turning them into bestsellers; Bebe Neuwirth as Avis, Julia’s biggest champion, confidant and...

Nickelodeon is fortifying its live-action comedy slate with series orders for three new shows, including series from “iCarly” creator Dan Schneider. Shnedier's series, “Henry Danger,” is a crime-fighting comedy centered on 13-year-old Henry, who scores a part-time job as a sidekick-in-training to super crime fighter Captain Man (plaed by Cooper Barnes of “The Perfect Host”). Their colorful adventures throw Henry's otherwise ordinary life absurdly out of balance, yet he must keep his new job a secret from his best friends. Schneider created the series, which has received a 20-episode order, with Dana Olsen (“George of the Jungle”). Also read: ‘Escape From.

At 25, Rihanna has put out seven albums, won six Grammys, eight AMAs and 22 Billboard Music Awards. But none of those statistics are the reason she deserved to take home the Icon Award on Nov. 24.
Rihanna hasn’t had an easy journey but has shown all of her fans and her critics that no matter what the world throws her way, she can overcome it, and “take good” from every experience, as her mother Monica Braithwaite said at the American Music Awards when presenting her with the award.

Awards season may have come and gone, but sci-fi fans still have something to look forward to with today's announcement of the Saturn Award nominees.
The awards, presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, recognize excellence in these genres, which are often underrepresented at other awards shows.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, this year's big movie contenders are "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2," "Hugo," tied with 10 nominations each.
A number of the movies scoring big have been commercial successes but have not received awards show love, including J.J. Abrams' $260-million grossing monster hit "Super 8," which nabbed eight nominations, and "Captain America: The First Avenger," which earned nearly $400 million worldwide, coming in with six.

Well, folks, 2011 is officially in the can, and surprisingly it wasn't such a horrendous year. It was definitely better than 2010, which was a huge step up from the putrid 2009. We laughed, we applauded, we were left dumbstruck, and of course we were infuriated. Read on for our cheers and jeers!

In A Better World (Sony) Winner of last year’s Best Foreign Film Oscar, this Danish export looks at two fractured families and the effect that the adult world dysfunction has on their two sons, who form an immediate and potentially deadly bond. Director Susanne Bier delivers another powerful work that maintains its drive during the films’ first 2/3, then falters somewhat during the last act. Still, well-worth seeing, and beautifully made. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Deleted scenes; Commentary by Bier and editor Pernille Bech Christensen; Interview with Bier. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.
X-men First Class (20th Century Fox) “Origins” film set in the early 1960s, traces the beginnings of Magento and Professor X (played ably here by Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy), and how the once-close friends and colleagues became bitter enemies. First half is slam-bang entertainment at its stylish best,...

It used to be that there were a few unquestionable constants in life: death, taxes and the cinematic insanity of Takeshi Miike. But then the Japanese auteur threw a curve-ball at this year’s Cannes film festival by offering a measured, slow-moving, but ultimately highly-crafted Samurai movie that left its weapon sheathed in favour of a humanist, emotive drama that split audiences thanks to that issue of difference. That movie – Harakiri – was certainly different, but it is best considered (when wider audiences eventually get to see it), as the yin to 13 Assassins‘ Yang: the two movies are opposite sides of the same coin, but both are crafted with artisan precision to tell the two sides of the samurai story, duty in battle and patriarchal responsibility at home.

Sorry this is so late this week gang!
The Perfect Host - stars David Hype Pierce as a crazy mofo, so that's your sales pitch right there. It's too bad the trailer and marketing for the film really gave that away because I think it's the turn that probably got the film made. Anyway, one to watch out for.
Wrecked - stars Adrian Brody as a guy who wakes up in a wrecked car in the woods with no memory. Good set-up and Brody is great (as usual), but the film fell a little flat for me. I like that it went for realism, the second act was meandering and felt like there was something lacking. Like we're just killing time for the reveal at the end. But like I said, decent thriller with a great performance by Brody.
Bereavement - I don't know much about Bereavement, but it's touted...

New: A Domestic Thriller and Some Provocative Imports David Hyde-Pierce gets about as far away from Niles Crane as possible in The Perfect Host (Magnolia Home Entertainment/Magnet; now available). While the film opens with the Frasier star playing a character you might think you recognize — as Warwick Wilson, he’s getting everything ready for an absolutely perfect dinner party — things start to change when a fugitive gunman (played by Clayne Crawford of 24) crashes the event, pretending to be a friend of a friend of Warwick’s. And then…well, it’s the delicious surprises that make The Perfect Host such a spellbindingly entertaining nail-biter. I watched it earlier this year with an absolutely breathless audience at the USA Film...

Portraying a character’s insanity in film can manifest in any number of ways depending on how the actor, director, or writer chooses to get creative. What’s even more important though, is how that insanity is then used and how it ties into the plot. For The Perfect Host, the insanity it is the plot, at least it’s the part of the plot that matters, even if the last third devolves into a makeshift thriller. What makes the film a treat is how David Hyde Pierce delivers it and gives the audience a performance that’s always amusing and manages to distract the audience from the twists waiting around the corner. It’s a thriller with some expert sleight of hand by its lead and it manages to overcome a multitude of flaws for as long as it stays inside Pierce’s domain, but once it strays outside...

Welcome back to our weekly look at new DVD releases coming to a virtual shelf near you! Lots of good stuff this week worth a rental at least and possibly a buy depending on your tastes. My own interests have marked five titles as Buys including two TV shows. Merrill Barr may suspect I’m doing so strictly to spite his recent bout of ridiculousness where he claimed TV shows on DVD are pointless, but I’m not. They’re just damn good shows. This week’s releases include In a Better World, Wrecked, Norwegian Ninja, True Adolescents, The Perfect Host, and more. As always, if you see something you like, click on the image to buy it. If a Tree Falls: The Story of the Earth Liberation Front In 2005 federal and state law enforcement agents across the country conducted simultaneous arrests of past and current members of the Earth Liberation Front. Coen Brothers Collection The only title in this collection that's new to Blu-ray is Miller's Crossing, which just happens to be one of my favorite films from the Coen brothers and it joins Blood Simple, Fargo and Raising Arizona in this all-in-one set. Buying all four in this one collection will save you about $18 over buying each title individually, so if you're a Coen fan and don't have any of them yet this just may be the set for you.
In the "Buy Now" link below I've included not only the collection, but the individual titles as well if you'd rather cherry pick a couple over buying them all together. If you want my opinion, I'd say the collection is the way to go since I would otherwsie recommend buying just Miller's Crossing and Fargo, but if you did that,...

Think it’s impossible to make a comedy for just $1.8 million, get it into theatres, and still wind up with a financial disaster? Think again!!! It is almost exactly 10 years since writer-director David Wain did just that with Wet Hot American Summer, his camp movie spoof which starred co-writer Michael Showalter, Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper, Elizabeth Banks, Michael Ian Black, Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Christopher Meloni, and Joe Lo Truglio, amongst many others.

Elizabeth Banks was a complete unknown when she was cast as “Lindsay” in the 2001 film Wet Hot American Summer. And she stayed that way for a while after, thanks to the dismal box office performance of David Wain’s camp comedy. But, over time, the movie’s growing cult would help Banks become one of the most in-demand actresses around.
To mark the tenth anniversary of Wet Hot American Summer, we spoke with the star of 40-Year-Old Virgin, Role Models, 30 Rock, and the forthcoming Hunger Games about her time at Camp Firewood.

Oftentimes, an independent film will score a major coup by attaching a well-known actor to the project. That name on the poster or the DVD cover can end exponentially grow the audience that would otherwise have watched relative unknowns. The problem with such a strategy is that no matter the talent of an actor, he can't improve on a terrible script. And that's the problem with Nick Tomnay's The Perfect Host. He landed David Hyde Pierce, who absolutely murders his role with such delightful and whimsical glee. And yet, Pierce's performance is so outstanding that it just shines a beacon on the amateurish and awkwardly paced remains of the film. You can put a bow on a pig but that don't make her a princess, no matter how lovely and sparkly the bow. The agonizing part of The Perfect Host, other than sitting through an overlong and trite series...

Magnolia Pictures Nick Tomnay
If Nick Tomnay’s feature-film debut “The Perfect Host” was set in his native Australia, it might take place in the middle class suburbs of Sydney where he grew up. As a child there in the 80s, Tomnay saw his parents play regular host to dinner parties of friends and family members.
“People did that, had parties,” Tomnay said. “People dressed up and everything.”
It’s a tradition that the writer/director hasn’t carried on in his adult life.

Review of The Perfect Host: This Party’s a Bust. The idea behind The Perfect Host -- part dark comedy and part suspense thriller -- is a clever one: a street tough (a one-note Clayne Crawford) menaces a well-mannered victim (Henry Hyde Pierce basically reprising his role as Frasier’s Nigel), only for the “wimp” to turn the tables and reveal himself as a psychopath. Pierce’s antics are amusingly offbeat, such as when his staid nerd Warwick (with a silent second w) joins a conga line or leads a choreographed dance scene from atop his dinner table. But his violent acts against a wailing captive stifle any laughter. It doesn’t help that neither he nor his prisoner are remotely likeable: an issue that leaves the filmmakers unable to engage the audience. The pace is slow and the plot points often predictable, all of which results is an uneven mishmash of Seven,...

For his directorial debut Nick Tomnay has done something remarkable: He manages to breathe new life into the dark comedy thriller subgenre of cinema with his efforts in the upcoming film The Perfect Host, which stars David Hyde Pierce as Warwick Wilson, the demented sociopath who loves nothing more in life but to host the perfect dinner party.
Recently Dread Central had the opportunity to speak with Tomnay to discuss the project, how his original short film evolved into a feature almost ten years later and why he loves exploring the extreme side of human nature.
For those who may need to be brought up-to-speed, The Perfect Host (review here) centers around John (Clayne Crawford), a criminal on the run after a bank robbery who finagles his way into the home of the seemingly hospitable Warwick (David Hyde Pierce) while trying to evade the police who are hot on his trail.

Summary: Goofy and gory until it dashes its credibility against a rock.
The beating heart of Nick Tomnay's The Perfect Host is a perfect short film -- tense, suspenseful, funny and seductive. It is all too apparent where this story ends and where, "Oh sh*t, we have forty minutes left to fill," begins. An already unbelievable story loses all credibility and becomes completely preposterous. It's still fun, but unignorably disappointing.

Everett David Hyde Pierce in “The Perfect Host” (2010)
David Hyde Pierce just can’t seem to let Dr. Niles Crane go.
In his newest film, “The Perfect Host,” the 52-year-old actor plays a character that bears more than a passing resemblance to the fussy, fidgety psychiatrist that he played for eleven seasons on NBC’s “Fraiser.”
