Director: David Fincher | Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards

Votes: 598,201 | Gross: $33.08M

This is David Fincher's best, and that is high praise indeed.

A fascinating portrayal of obsession and unyielding persistence, with well-drawn characters and excellent performances. This is a highly evocative and immersive film; the film-makers have done an excellent job in bringing to life the late 60s and the 70s.

The score by David Shire (who also wrote the score for The Conversation and All The President's Men) is highly reminiscent of the paranoid-thrillers of the 70s (one of my favourite decades in the history of film) and adds greatly to the atmosphere. The same can be said of the vintage songs interspersed throughout the movie; Hurdy Gurdy Man is used to great effect and for me magnifies the impact of the closing scene.

Make sure you watch the Director's cut of the film (it's only 5 or so minutes longer; who in their right mind would actually want any portion of this film shortened, especially that excellently effective aural-montage, where snippets of hit songs from different years play over a blacked-out screen to portray the passage of time?).

62 Metascore

Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: Pam Grier, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Forster, Bridget Fonda

Votes: 374,897 | Gross: $39.67M

This is Tarantino's best film. "What?!" you ask, "Better than Pulp Fiction?" "Yes," is my answer to you. I truly do love Pulp Fiction (I rate it 10/10) but I wish Tarantino would make more films like Jackie Brown. It's truly lamentable it is not as popular as his other films are.

While none of the films he's made after Jackie Brown are bad (in fact, most are very good and indeed, most of his films at the very least demonstrate good craftsmanship; yes, even Death Proof), they are nowhere near as good as Jackie Brown. They ain't even in the same ballpark. They ain't even in the same league. They ain't even the same sport.

One of the successes of Jackie Brown are its characters, especially Max Cherry. Max is one of the most likeable characters I've come across in a film, and Robert Forster imbues him with warmth and gravity. His performance here has inspired me to seek out other movies he's acted in.

Pam Grier, Michael Keaton (gotta love Keaton!), Robert DeNiro, Samuel L Jackson and Bridget Fonda all give excellent performances.

Phenomenal cast and phenomenal fim!

17. In Bruges (2008)

R | 107 min | Comedy, Crime, Drama

67 Metascore

After a job gone wrong, hitman Ray and his partner await orders from their ruthless boss in Bruges, Belgium, the last place in the world Ray wants to be.

Director: Martin McDonagh | Stars: Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Ciarán Hinds, Elizabeth Berrington

Votes: 461,425 | Gross: $7.76M

I do not think any movie has made me sad and then laugh in immediate succession without devolving into parody. This movie may be the only one that has, and does so more than once.

The serious/sad parts are truly heartfelt, while the funny parts (much of the humour is very dark) are amongst the funniest I've come across during my time watching films, and that is saying a lot.

Colin Farrell gives a truly great performance. It seems to me that Farrell is not given the recognition he deserves as an actor. This maybe more a reflection of the roles he chooses rather than his ability as an actor. If you don't like Colin Farrell, watch In Bruges and maybe you'll change your mind.

Brendan Gleeson, as always, is excellent as Ken. Ken may be a hitman but it's hard to believe due to his warm and amiable nature.

Another plus point of this film is that none of the main characters (I refer to Ray, Ken and Harry) are truly despicable; yes, they've done bad things, however, they all have their principles and stick to them. This instils respect in one's heart for the characters, if not unreserved love (but how can you not love Ken?).

Carter Burwell provides an appropriately depressing score, which gives exemplifies the themes of guilt and redemption. Burwell is fast becoming one of my favourite composers.

Damn, just writing about this film makes me want to watch it again!

18. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

Votes: 183,580 | Gross: $30.86M

One of the most effective and visceral horror films ever made. Once we meet the source of the threat, this film does not let up until the closing credits. All this is done with no more than a pint of blood and no gore.

A relentless assault on the senses.
