The provocative thrillers involving sexually explicit scenes and raising the themes of deviations were particularly popular in the 1990s, with Sharon Stone’s cultish Basic Instinct (1992) and Kubrick-directed Eyes Wide Shut (1999). However, there is one forgotten gem of the genre, which became a controversial sensation back in 1996.
Shockingly, it’s even more explicit and debatable than the mentioned 90’s thrillers, as the fetish featured in it seems to be the craziest one. The point is that this movie follows a film producer James, who, after surviving a car accident, becomes involved with a perverse group of people who are aroused by car collisions, worshiping them.
As the plot progresses, we see how James becomes more and more into this fetish and tries to rekindle his failed relationship with his wife by introducing her to the cult. Besides, be sure there will be loud engine roars and a bunch of devastating fatalities.

David Lynch is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s biggest visionaries and an author who will forever be remembered in history among the names that have changed movies for the better. Best known as the author of Twin Peaks, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and the surreal, experimental movie Eraserhead, Lynch has recently revealed to Deadline that he has an idea for an animated movie Snootworld which he hopes to release in the future despite, as he reveals, the rejection he got from Netflix.
Lynch’s unique vision could be seen in many of his live-action movies or series, and while fans are hoping for a continuation of Twin Peaks, after the enigmatic conclusion of the third season, it seems that Lynch has other priorities at the time and that he desperately wants to make an animated movie.

A couple decades ago, legendary filmmaker David Lynch – who we have to thank for Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, the 1984 version of Dune, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Wild at Heart, Lost Highway, The Straight Story, and Mulholland Drive, among other things – started working with The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, The Addams Family, and Welcome to Marwen writer Caroline Thompson on the screenplay for an animated movie called Snootworld… and even though the Netflix streaming service recently turned down the chance to bring Snootworld into our world, Lynch told Deadline that he’s not giving up on getting the movie made.
Lynch said, “I don’t know when I started thinking about Snoots but I’d do these drawings of Snoots and then a story started to emerge. I got together with Caroline and we worked on a script. Just recently I thought someone might be interested in getting behind this...

Exclusive: Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drive director David Lynch tells us he is hoping to find backers for his under-the-radar animated project Snootworld, even if Netflix recently “rejected” his “fairytale” pitch.
Screen legend Lynch has said little publicly about Snootworld until now and in recent months he has quietly tried to breathe life into the project by seeking out a financier.
He began working on the script two decades ago with former Tim Burton collaborator Caroline Thompson, writer of projects including The Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands, as well as 1991 hit The Addams Family.

Studiocanal launched a brand new official podcast – and the host might just be familiar to Film Stories listeners.
This is a bit of an odd story for me to write. Basically, well, because I’m in it. I’ll see how I get on.
The rather fine folks at Studiocanal have launched an official podcast, digging into the huge archive of movies under its stewardship. It’s arriving regularly, and as well as focusing on a movie of the month, there’s a broader exploration of other bits and bobs too.
Don’t take our word for it. Here’s Jamie McHale, the head of theatrical marketing at the studio: “We’re thrilled to be launching an official podcast to celebrate our incredible library of titles and upcoming theatrical releases. Love or loathe David Lynch, you have to admit that the former indie filmmaker has had one of the most unusual routes to fame in the history of Hollywood. Once king of the “midnight movies” in the 1970s, Lynch from plucked from that world by the Mel Brooks production company to helm the adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway play “The Elephant Man” in 1980. What prompted Lynch to be chosen may be a question for the ages, but it launched a film career that has been nothing short of remarkable.
Lynch’s particular vision (which some critics have termed “narrow”) has produced some distinctive oddities (“Lost Highway” and “Inland Empire” among them), but when Lynch connects, such as in “Blue Velvet” and “Mulholland Drive,” he changes the limited notion of what some filmgoers think of as “the movies.” Both of those films brought him Oscar nominations for directing, while “The Elephant Man...

Like the piscine Guild Navigator who gets wheeled out in a tank at the start of the movie, David Lynch‘s adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel Dune is neither fish nor fowl. Lynch gets to play with some rather dense world-building, but Herbert’s critique of charismatic leaders gets pushed to the side while the demands of ’80s sci-fi fantasy don’t allow the director to create what would later become his signature dream states. As a result, Lynch’s Dune pleased no one, least of all Lynch himself. And while the film has its fans, especially in light of Denis Villeneuve‘s more faithful blockbuster, it remains an outlier in both Lynch’s oeuvre and in the history of Dune adaptations.
Still, the legend goes that if studio meddling and post-production issues not come to bear, Lynch would have been able to put more of his stamp on the sequel Dune II.

A new restoration of the 1959 horror film on Blu-ray and DVD, and making its UK digital debut, Horrors Of The Black Museum, starring Michael Gough and directed by Arthur Crabtree (Fiend Without a Face), marked the first film in the “Sadian Trilogy”, followed by the Hammer favourite Circus of Horrors and Michael Powell’s infamous Peeping Tom – introducing cinema audiences to a more shocking and salacious brand of onscreen horror.
A series of grisly, macabre murders sweep London and leave Scotland Yard completely baffled. Bancroft, an evil crime journalist, is hypnotising his assistant to commit murders using items curated in his own personal “Black Museum” – inspired by the infamous real-life collection of weapons and torture instruments used by criminals. Using these murders to fuel his own crime stories, Bancroft delights in the Yard’s embarrassment.

As we welcome in the New Year, we can reveal our annual (non-exhaustive) list of U.S. and international movies we think could grace the festival circuit in 2024. We’ve stuck to our criteria that the project must already be in production and have not already been announced for a festival. More than 70% of our selections last year went on to debut at a major festival. Those that didn’t were largely delayed by the strike or are still in post-production. If the titles below make the cut, it will be a thrilling year on the festival circuit once again.

“Twin Peaks” director David Lynch loves a damn fine cup of coffee in the morning, but he also loves a bag of Cheetos in his dressing room.
The Oscar-nominated “Mulholland Drive” filmmaker recently spoke with Empire Magazine about his role in Steven Spielberg’s 2022 memoir movie “The Fabelmans.” In the Best Picture-nominated film, Lynch cameos as director John Ford in the last scene, offering sage advice to rookie filmmaker Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel Labelle) about why a horizon should never sit in the center of a frame. “John Ford probably had a bunch of things he could call on to give a short education to that young lad. But he picked the horizon bit,” Lynch said. “But it’s true. A horizon in the middle is boring as shit.”

David Lynch had some hesitations about acting in Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans. However, once he took on the role of John Ford, he had one simple request — a bag of Cheetos.
“Well, Cheetos, number one, I love them,” he told Empire magazine of his requirement for appearing in the film loosely based on Spielberg’s life. “And any chance I can, I get them. But I know that they’re not exactly health food. So when I do leave the house and I get a chance to… But I don’t get them that often, honestly.”
He continued, “If I do get them, I want a big bag. Because once you start… you need to have a lot before you could slow down and actually stop. Otherwise, with a small bag, then you’d be prowling for days to find more […] It’s incredible flavour.”

Not everything in a given horror series has to be a stone cold classic. That being said, some series entries don’t get the fair shake they deserve. For example, there are some absolute bangers in the later entries of series like Puppet Master or Child’s Play that are overlooked thanks to entries in, say, Leprechaun or Hellraiser that would make you swear off sequels be it direct to video or not. Some series, like the focus of today’s entry, probably didn’t need or deserve sequels but that never stopped an executive from being greedy before. We can reveal an exclusive first look at the English-language movie, which will also star two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts (Mulholland Drive) opposite Merlant, Will Sharpe (The White Lotus) as the male lead, Jamie Campbell Bower (Stranger Things), Chacha Huang (Money Heist) and Anthony Wong (Infernal Affairs).
Inspired by the character and world created by writer Emmanuelle Arsan, the film shot in Hong Kong and Paris from a script co-written with Rebecca Zlotowski (Other People’s Children).
Plot details are being kept under wraps but Diwan’s film will deviate from the lucrative and cult 1977 movie adaptation of Arsan’s novel, which starred Sylvia Kristel as the wife of a French diplomat in Bangkok who embarks on a voyage of sexual discovery.

No production designer has created more iconic, gorgeous outdoor imagery than Jack Fisk, whose 50-year filmography is filled with classics — “Days of Heaven,” “The Tree of Life,” “Mulholland Drive,” “There Will Be Blood,” and “The Revenant” represent just a fraction of his output. Yet according to Fisk, a “well-designed” film is not his goal. “I always lean more toward a documentary style,” he told IndieWire. “I love the idea of telling a story that will not only sell popcorn, but give you information.”
Fisk’s latest project, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” provided just that kind of opportunity, with director Martin Scorsese telling the true story behind a series of murders committed in the Osage Nation in the 1920s after oil was discovered on tribal land. “Marty really wanted to tell it from the Osage point of view,” Fisk said. “He wanted it to be truthful and fair, and that...

Lionsgate and BuzzFeed are bringing the creepy viral story Dear David to the big screen this Friday the 13th, with Anna and the Apocalypse director John McPhail at the helm.
Dear David adapts the viral 2017 Twitter thread in which then Buzzfeed cartoonist Adam Ellis chronicled the child haunting his apartment. Mike Van Waes wrote the screenplay, and Augustus Prew stars as the fictionalized version of Ellis.
Director John McPhail spoke with Bloody Disgusting ahead of the film’s release in theaters, On Demand, and Digital on October 13, 2023, where he discussed his horror influences, online trolling, and emphasis on character arcs.
For McPhail, good stories always begin and end with great characters.
“Essentially, I make films for people,” he tells Bloody Disgusting. “I make them for an audience. For me, what I’ve always loved is just following the character’s journey. It doesn’t matter what adventure you take me...

Hulu’s savage new original film The Mill offers a nightmare vision of corporate America controlled by algorithms that physically, mentally, and emotionally punish employees who don’t achieve their quotas. The movie doesn’t seem particularly far-fetched in 2023, despite its outrageous set-up, which is something that the filmmakers have acknowledged.
“When we filmed The Mill, these discussions were hypothetical. Our film unexpectedly became relevant. But it’s not just about AI or labor. Joe’s tale isn’t merely topical — it’s universal,” director Sean King O’Grady said of the movie. “It’s about feeling trapped in a system that takes more than it gives, feeling like a replaceable cog in a lifeless machine. For a long time Naomi Watts seemed destined to be known as Nicole Kidman‘s less successful close friend. Born in the United Kingdom but raised in Australia, Watts struggled for many years to find her footing as an actress. While her friend rose to fame, Watts just couldn’t seem to catch a break.
She did work some what steadily, but it wasn’t until she signed on for the lead in a television pilot by David Lynch that Watts found fame and acclaim. “Mulholland Drive” never made it as a television series but the pilot was released as a feature film, becoming an either love it or hate it classic. The film was named Best Picture by both the New York and National Society of Film Critics Awards, and Watts won the Best Actress Award from the National Society. Shockingly Watts was cast on the basis of a photo that the director saw.

"The Conjuring 2" opens with Ed and Lorraine Warren investigating the infamous Amityville house at 112 Ocean Avenue to determine whether or not a demonic presence caused Ronald DeFeo Jr. to commit familial annihilation and the subsequent supernatural events that plagued the Lutz family after they moved into the home. The couple holds a seance and Lorraine is thrust into a terrifying vision where she encounters a demonic nun.
The Nun appears multiple times throughout the film, until Lorraine rightfully addresses it as Valak, a shape-shifting demon, and condemns it back from which it came. James Wan didn't intend for Valak to be such a major player in The Conjuring Universe — honestly, "The Conjuring" was never supposed to spawn a cinematic universe but the fans demanded it — and didn't originally intend for the demon to take the shape of a nun. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is the name of the Philip K. Dick novel that Ridley Scott famously adapted into Blade Runner. Wading into similar dystopian sci-fi waters, Bertrand Bonello’s latest feature, The Beast (La Bête), tosses together so many ideas, time periods and genres, its source material could have been called: Do French Girls Dream of Androids While Trying to Escape from Incels in L.A. After the 1910 Paris Flood?
In reality, the auteur’s ambitious new 146-minute film is a very loose adaptation of the 1903 Henry James novella, The Beast in the Jungle, about a man who never pursues the woman he loves because he fears a terrible fate will befall him — until he realizes, way too late, that he made his fate come true by never pursuing her. Bonello takes that initial conundrum, slices, dices and remixes it, then tosses it into a time machine.

The demon Valak, aka The Nun, is among the most infamous faces in "The Conjuring" universe. Aside from perhaps the doll Annabelle, Valak's image looms over the franchise more than any other. According to a lawsuit put forth by actress Bonnie Aarons (via The Hollywood Reporter), who played the character in "The Conjuring 2," "The Nun," and "The Nun 2," the character shows up on official merch a lot, too. Now, Aarons is asking for a cut of royalties she says she's owed, alleging via a suit obtained by THR that Warner Bros. has been exploiting her "talent, creativity, and likeness."
"The Princess Diaries" and "Mulholland Drive" actress is reportedly suing Warner Bros, New Line Cinema, and Scope Productions for breach of contract, citing a clause in her contract that ensured her a "pro-rata share" on all merch with her likeness, which her suit alleges has included "toys, dolls, decorations,...

It’s the shock of seeing Norman Bates, knife in hand, clad in his mother’s clothes, grinning maniacally in the swinging lamplight. It’s a supposedly dead husband rising from a bathtub with terrifying saucer contact-lenses. It’s finally connecting “I see dead people” with Bruce Willis being shot at the beginning of “The Sixth Sense.” When movies pull the rug out from under us, it’s one of the greatest thrills that cinema can provide.

Martin Scorsese was at a crossroads in 1985. The King of Comedy had tanked at the box office, and Paramount had recently pulled the plug on his passion project, The Last Temptation of Christ, weeks before production was set to begin. So when the script for After Hours came across his desk via actor-producer Griffin Dunne and producer Amy Robinson, who had appeared in Mean Streets, Scorsese jumped at the chance to helm a small-scale, low-budget black comedy set in New York City’s SoHo neighborhood.
After Hours comes full circle by opening and closing at the workplace of bored data entry drone Paul Hackett (Dunne). In between, Paul’s nightmarish nightlong odyssey sees him repeatedly returning to the same handful of locations and oddball individuals, spiraling ever deeper into an infernal realm of anxiety, paranoia, and free-floating guilt. Few filmmakers in Hollywood history have remained as unapologetically committed to a singular vision as David Lynch. From redefining the midnight movie with “Eraserhead” in 1977 to expanding our understanding of what television can accomplish with “Twin Peaks: The Return” in 2017, the four-time Oscar nominee has been a consistent force of unbridled creativity throughout his entire career.
With over forty years of his artistry to study, it’s now easy to identify the tenets of a “Lynchian” film. His work typically feature a blend of dreamy surrealism, folksy humor, and psychological thrills rooted in the film noir genre. MovieInception plays constantly with reality and the dream state. Warner BrosThirteen years on from its release, Christopher Nolan’s Inception still puzzles and intrigues. It is one of those films in which you discover something new each time you watch it. Or, more likely, it makes you reinterpret what you thought you already knew. Nolan’s oeuvre builds complex paradoxes of time, space and dimension. Memento (2000) and Insomnia (2002) deal with the order of time; The Prestige (2006) deals with the illusion of space; Interstellar (2014) moves through multi-dimensions. Inception goes one step further, exploring the manipulation and distortion of all three states. It is a narrative set in the subconscious. Nolan’s other films are set within a real-world framework. It is uniquely Inception that moves into the unreal dream dimension. As in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and David Lynch’s Eraserhead (1977) and Mulholland Drive (2001), Nolan explores not a...

In thinking of the most debated movie endings ever, there are certain films that always come up that leave viewers arguing their interpretations: The Shining (why is Jack Torrance in the photo?), Titanic (could Jack have fit on the door with Rose?), Mulholland Drive (uhhhh…). But one of the most debated movie endings of the last 15 years is Christopher Nolan’s Inception, which left viewers wondering if Leonardo DiCaprio’s Cobb was living reality or within another dream. Now, the director is chiming in – not to spell it out but to add a little more depth to it.
Speaking with Wired, Christopher Nolan said the Inception ending has more depth than even just determining if Cobb is in a dream or not. “I mean, the end of Inception…There is a nihilistic view of that ending, right? But also, he’s moved on and is with his kids. The ambiguity is not an emotional ambiguity.

Ever looked up the ending of a movie after you watched it? Well… you’re definitely not alone.
A formal list of the most confusing movies of all time has been assembled, according to how often the film’s title and “explained” is searched on the internet. After compiling a list of 150 films renowned for their puzzling plots and ambiguous endings, Im-a-puzzle‘s team analyzed searches that include a film title followed by “explained” in an effort to learn which top 15 films confused audiences the most.
Released in 2022, the list spans over six decades, beginning with Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” with the least amount of searches per month, totaling 4,200 searches. As the searches per month increase on the list, Christopher Nolan’s films land four of the 15 spots — including #1 for his 2020 puzzler “Tenet.” That film introduced the concept of “time inversion” and concerns different physical properties moving in different directions.

“Is that an Oz narrative?” asks director Rodney Ascher in the second chapter of Alexandre O. Philippe’s trippy, tricky, and obsessive cine-essay Lynch/Oz. Ascher is clearly being a touch dishonest with the question because he’s at that moment referring to Beverly Hills Cop. He follows up that query by wondering in tongue-in-cheek fashion, “Is everything?”
Even though Philippe’s film is ostensibly about the many ways that The Wizard of Oz permeates the work of David Lynch, Ascher’s half-serious digression into the expansively universal nature of Victor Fleming’s Technicolor musical fantasy, calling its fish-out-water plot a “sturdy template” for just about any kind of film you could imagine, is typical of the filmed essays collected by Philippe. It’s both dead-serious about its subjects and playfully exploratory.
That dual nature is present in Lynch/Oz from the start. In the first chapter, film critic Amy Nicholson,...

There’s a scene at the start of Beau is Afraid in which the titular character (Joaquin Phoenix) is given new medication by his therapist (Stephen McKinley Henderson). Beau takes the pills “incorrectly”, triggering a panic attack which sets in motion a series of events depicting his deteriorating/fluctuating mental state. It’s a fleeting scene but one that seems to suggests everything forth could be taken with a pinch of dimethyltryptamine. For what unravels is a cerebral cortex swirling sense assault within a world locked in a perpetual Purge film parody, and writer/director Ari Aster utilising post-pandemic paranoia to heighten his action and comedy.
The story starts with the bereft, jittery Beau, a middle aged loner wallowing in paranoia prior to catching a flight to visit his mother, but when his front door key and luggage get stolen Beau is forced to abandon the trip. A brutal street...

Arriving at the tail end of a creatively fertile and financially lucrative decade or so for South Korean entertainment, with cinema being a key aspect of this boom, the domestic films presented at the 2023 Jeonjun International Film Festival took on an extra level of significance. It was hard not to look at these selections, mostly feature debuts, as a bellwether of this influential national film industry’s development over the upcoming years.
The trials and tribulations of the film industry itself were the focus of some of the Korean competition’s best entries, such as Yoo Heong-jun’s Regardless of Us. At once mundane and elliptical, the film is most effective in its opening stretch, which sees middle-aged actress Hwa-ryeong (Cho Hyunjin) being visited at a hospital by colleagues from her most recent production, including the director and producer. She’s recovering from a stroke, and her condition seems to...

Studiocanal is releasing a newly re-mastered version of David Lynch’s 2006 surreal mystery drama “Inland Empire,” which is set to hit theaters in the U.K. and France later this month.
Supervised by Lynch, the new 4K master was undertaken by The Criterion Collection with the support of Studiocanal. It features 5.1 surround DTS-hd Master Audio and uncompressed stereo soundtracks, newly remastered by Lynch and original rerecording mixers Dean Hurley and Ron Eng.
The first digitally shot feature from the famed director of such cult works as “The Elephant Man,” “Blue Velvet” and “Mulholland Drive,” “Inland Empire” stars Laura Dern as Nikki, a once-celebrated actress who lands the lead role in a film by director Kingsley Stewart (Jeremy Irons) alongside co-star Devon (Justin Theroux). The production is a remake of a work filmed several years ago but never finished because the main actors died before shooting wrapped.

‘The Watcher’: Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale discussed the nature of fear at special NYC screening
“It was early in Covid. And it was a time when many people I think were very afraid of what we didn’t know about. And certainly I was one of those people,” said actor Bobby Cannavale during a Q&a for Netflix’s “The Watcher” at the Crosby Street Hotel in New York City on April 19. “That’s really a jumping off point for us to really explore what it feels like to be powerless in a situation that we generally feel pretty good about having under control: our family dynamic, the safety of our family, those kinds of things. And so that’s what really hooked me.”
Created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan based on actual events, “The Watcher” tells the story of a family that moves to the suburbs only to be terrorized by letters from an anonymous stalker. Co-star Naomi Watts knows a thing or...

The 76th Cannes Film Festival announced this morning that its closing night film in, oh, just about five weeks will be Pixar’s latest innovative animated film, “Elemental.” The movie is directed by Peter Sohn, whose only other feature credit as director is 2015’s “The Good Dinosaur.” Sohn has been a part of Pixar, working in some capacity as an animator or story developer on most of their titles, going back to 2003. Job security at that shop!
“Elemental”’s premise is a forbidden love between anthropomorphic representations of Fire and Water in Element City. How this will make any kind of logical sense is beyond me, but have you seen how much money the “Cars” franchise has earned? I think it’s best not to worry too much about realism and, following water’s lead, go with the flow.
