Votes: 2,871,232 | Gross: $534.86M

Greatest superhero movie ever made. Nolan's second Batman film the best he has ever made. Featuring an iconic last performance from Heath Ledger as the Joker and solid turns from Christian Bale, Maggie Gylenhall, Aaron Eckhart, and Gary Oldman. Every scene is perfectly executed and shot. Also emotional and realistic, which is rare for a comic book movie.

Votes: 2,220,651 | Gross: $107.93M

Tarantino's multi-perspective, star studded crime thriller is definitely his greatest achievement. Starring a brilliant ensemble cast including John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Tim Roth and Christopher Walken Pulp Fiction brilliantly links the stories of each character together and creates an unforgettable tale, including all the usual Tarantino mainstays such as large amounts of gore, profanity and pop culture references.

5. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Director: Irvin Kershner | Stars: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams

Votes: 1,379,971 | Gross: $290.48M

The greatest sci-fi movie of all time, the fifth instalment of the series is my personal favourite of the original trilogy and the franchise in general. All performances are top notch especially Harrison Ford as Han Solo. The film is always exciting to watch, with its iconic scenes some of the best in cinema.

6. Forrest Gump (1994)

Director: Robert Zemeckis | Stars: Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Gary Sinise, Sally Field

Votes: 2,257,526 | Gross: $330.25M

Forrest Gump is one of the most moving and genuinely emotional films I've seen. Starring a brilliant Tom Hanks as the mentally challenged Gump he performs brilliantly and makes Gump one of the most likeable characters in cinema. Great story with lots of twists and turns, and includes a number of unanticipated historical moments

7. The Green Mile (1999)

61 Metascore

Director: Frank Darabont | Stars: Tom Hanks, Michael Clarke Duncan, David Morse, Bonnie Hunt

Votes: 1,407,680 | Gross: $136.80M

Frank Darabont's second attempt at a Stephen King adaptation produces yet another masterpiece. The performance of Michael Clarke Duncan stands as one of the best I've ever seen. The weird but wonderful storyline adds up to make one of the saddest conclusions to a film ever.

8. Memento (2000)

R | 113 min | Mystery, Thriller

83 Metascore

A man with short-term memory loss attempts to track down his wife's murderer.

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano, Mark Boone Junior

Votes: 1,323,084 | Gross: $25.54M

My personal favourite non-Batman Nolan film. The films intricate and complicated plot is enthralling and always leaves you wondering what will happen next, which is helped by Guy Pearce's sympathetic performance of amnesiac Leonard Shelby. Not to mention there's one hell of a twist.

9. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

Votes: 1,979,559 | Gross: $377.85M

The third instalment of the amazing fantasy trilogy perfectly wrapped up the series in epic fashion. The battles and the whole film are perfectly shot and directed by Peter Jackson, who is helped by brilliant performances from the perfectly chosen cast. The film is brilliant and deserving of all it's accolades.

Director: Francis Ford Coppola | Stars: Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Diane Keaton

Votes: 2,012,840 | Gross: $134.97M

What's left to say about the Godfather? I could praise its brilliant performances all around, with Marlon Brando creating one of the most iconic cinema characters ever. Or I could praise its plot of a good hearted man slowly turning sinister, or I could just praise its amazingly realistic take on the gangster genre. Either way watch The Godfather, it's an offer you can't refuse.

11. Fight Club (1999)

67 Metascore

An insomniac office worker and a devil-may-care soap maker form an underground fight club that evolves into much more.

Director: David Fincher | Stars: Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Meat Loaf, Zach Grenier

Votes: 2,324,454 | Gross: $37.03M

Immensely underrated at its time of release Fight Club has aged to become one of the best films ever made. Ed Norton is brilliant as the un-named Narrator, but the show is stolen by Brad Pitt as the mysterious Tyler Durden, one of cinema's best characters. Containing loads of great and unforgettable scenes, not to mention the twist that no one sees coming

12. The Matrix (1999)

Directors: Lana Wachowski, Lilly Wachowski | Stars: Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving

Votes: 2,053,544 | Gross: $171.48M

The Matrix still stands today as one of the greatest and most revolutionary films ever made. A surprisingly solid performance from the well casted Keanu Reeves is backed by good supporting performances especially from Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith. The special effects are brilliant and way ahead of its time. The complicated plot keeps you watching right till its satisfying conclusion.

13. Toy Story 3 (2010)

G | 103 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

Director: Lee Unkrich | Stars: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Ned Beatty

Votes: 892,604 | Gross: $415.00M

The best animated film ever made. Pixar did immensely well to live up to all the expectations that were put upon the third instalment of the hugely popular franchise, they not only lived up to these expectations, they exceeded them. Using the characters we know and love they craft a hilarious and emotional film. All characters are voiced brilliantly which helps to bring these interesting characters to life.

14. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

Director: James Cameron | Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Edward Furlong, Robert Patrick

Votes: 1,174,239 | Gross: $204.84M

Manages to build brilliantly upon it's already excellent predecessor in every way possible. The casting here is impeccable with Edward Furlong as a young John particularly standing out in what is unbelievably his first role. Arnie is again brilliant as he was in the predecessor, it is amazing how he managed to transform from one of the most evil and ruthless villains ever in the last film, to one of the most likeable and sympathetic characters in number 2. The action sequences are brilliantly shot and executed, the finale is unorgettable.

15. The Departed (2006)

R | 151 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

85 Metascore

An undercover cop and a mole in the police attempt to identify each other while infiltrating an Irish gang in South Boston.

Director: Martin Scorsese | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg

Votes: 1,422,533 | Gross: $132.38M

Another Scoresese classic, the film that finally got him some well deserved recognition from the Academy. Loosely based on Honk Kong thriller Internal Affairs the story sees a mob boss deploy a rat inside the police department, whilst the police do the same thing. Both need to find each other before it is too late. The constantly evolving and unpredictable story makes the film great, and it is elevated by some brilliant performances from Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Wahlberg. A film deserving of its praise and accolades.

16. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

R | 108 min | Drama, Romance, Sci-Fi

Votes: 1,078,158 | Gross: $34.40M

The truly unique and original idea of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is what the makes the film so amazing. Not to mention the career best performances from Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet as well as solid support from Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo etc. The plot is one of cinemas best to offer.

17. Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Tom Sizemore, Edward Burns

Votes: 1,496,709 | Gross: $216.54M

Spielberg's greatest effort. It's frighteningly realistic portrayal of World War II makes you further sympathise with the characters and their struggle. It's an inspiring story and really allows us to see the horrors of war. Again boasts a brilliant lead performance from the legend that is Tom Hanks. The definitive war movie,

18. Raging Bull (1980)

R | 129 min | Biography, Drama, Sport

90 Metascore

The life of boxer Jake LaMotta, whose violence and temper that led him to the top in the ring destroyed his life outside of it.

Director: Martin Scorsese | Stars: Robert De Niro, Cathy Moriarty, Joe Pesci, Frank Vincent

Votes: 380,287 | Gross: $23.38M

Another great Scoresese flick. Another collaboration with De Niro and Pesci, reaps massive rewards. De Niro gives his career best performance here, and shows incredible dedication towards the role. The boxing scenes are brilliantly directed by Scoresese, and the black and white really works for the fim.

19. Up (2009)

PG | 96 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

88 Metascore

78-year-old Carl Fredricksen travels to Paradise Falls in his house equipped with balloons, inadvertently taking a young stowaway.

Directors: Pete Docter, Bob Peterson | Stars: Edward Asner, Jordan Nagai, John Ratzenberger, Christopher Plummer

Votes: 1,125,199 | Gross: $293.00M

Another absolute cinematic masterpiece from Pixar. The range of emotions you go through in Up is what makes the film so great. From it's emotional introduction, to it's thrilling ending all the while making you laugh throughout. It's cast of weird but brilliant characters also make it one of the best films you can watch.

20. The Usual Suspects (1995)

R | 106 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

76 Metascore

The sole survivor of a pier shoot-out tells the story of how a notorious criminal influenced the events that began with five criminals meeting in a seemingly random police lineup.

Director: Bryan Singer | Stars: Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, Chazz Palminteri, Stephen Baldwin

Votes: 1,145,603 | Gross: $23.34M

It's hard to explain what makes the Usual Suspects so good. It's ensemble cast work very well together, but the best performance comes from Kevin Spacey, delivering an Oscar winning performance. Its story is unpredictable and addicting. But the best part of the film is its ending, the best in any film.

21. City of God (2002)

R | 130 min | Crime, Drama

79 Metascore

In the slums of Rio, two kids' paths diverge as one struggles to become a photographer and the other a kingpin.

Directors: Fernando Meirelles, Kátia Lund | Stars: Alexandre Rodrigues, Leandro Firmino, Matheus Nachtergaele, Phellipe Haagensen

Votes: 801,217 | Gross: $7.56M

My favourite foreign film. City of God presents a scarily realistic vision of Rio's infamous favelas and it''s inhabitants coupled with brilliant performances from the relatively unknown cast. Fast paced and will never lose your interest. City of God is a must see for everyone.

22. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

PG-13 | 178 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

92 Metascore

A meek Hobbit from the Shire and eight companions set out on a journey to destroy the powerful One Ring and save Middle-earth from the Dark Lord Sauron.

Director: Peter Jackson | Stars: Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, Sean Bean

Votes: 2,007,465 | Gross: $315.54M

Sets the seeds wonderfully for the amazing saga which was to come. It introduces us seamlessly to a wealth of new characters, and manages to make each and every one interesting. Probably the quietest of the trilogy in terms of all out action, nonetheless it is as engaging as the other two. The end perfectly sets up the next and opens the best trilogy ever made, with a bang.

23. Léon: The Professional (1994)

R | 110 min | Action, Crime, Drama

64 Metascore

12-year-old Mathilda is reluctantly taken in by Léon, a professional assassin, after her family is murdered. An unusual relationship forms as she becomes his protégée and learns the assassin's trade.

Director: Luc Besson | Stars: Jean Reno, Gary Oldman, Natalie Portman, Danny Aiello

Votes: 1,246,111 | Gross: $19.50M

An excellent film and a must see for any film fanatic. Natalie Portman makes a brilliant standout performance, holding her own against admittedly excellent turns from both Gary Oldman and Jean Reno. Also full of badass action that will keep you gripped. Added to this is a great story which is effective and memorable.

24. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

PG-13 | 179 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

87 Metascore

While Frodo and Sam edge closer to Mordor with the help of the shifty Gollum, the divided fellowship makes a stand against Sauron's new ally, Saruman, and his hordes of Isengard.

Director: Peter Jackson | Stars: Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom

Votes: 1,784,125 | Gross: $342.55M

Although the weakest of the trilogy, it is still one of the best films I've seen. The second instalment further develops the character we have already met in satisfying fashion, and also introduces the iconic Gollum played by Andy Serkis using motion capture. The Battle of Helms Deep is a particular highlight of this already brilliant film.

25. Inception (2010)

PG-13 | 148 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

74 Metascore

A thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a C.E.O., but his tragic past may doom the project and his team to disaster.

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Elliot Page, Ken Watanabe

Votes: 2,551,314 | Gross: $292.58M

One of the most ambitious films ever made, fortunately Inception delivers upon it's brilliant, yet difficult premise. The plot of the film is so confusing that it demands your full attention throughout it's long run time, however this effort comes as a great reward as Nolan has crafted a brilliant and enthralling story. As well as this the film is aided by brilliant performances by both leading man Leonardo Dicaprio and the supporting cast, which includes the likes of Tom Hardy, Ellen Page and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The special effects on the film are both awe inspiring yet believable adding to the brilliant universe Nolan has created with this film

26. Back to the Future (1985)

PG | 116 min | Adventure, Comedy, Sci-Fi

87 Metascore

Marty McFly, a 17-year-old high school student, is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his close friend, the maverick scientist Doc Brown.

Director: Robert Zemeckis | Stars: Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover

Votes: 1,307,083 | Gross: $210.61M

One of the most iconic films of all time Back to the Future is one of the films likely to stand the test of time. The brilliant mix of comedy and more serious adrenaline rushed moments of the film makes it tonally perfect, and the film is made by brilliant and iconic performances by Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd as Marty and Doc Brown respectively. One of the most essential movies you must watch

27. The Prestige (2006)

PG-13 | 130 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

66 Metascore

After a tragic accident, two stage magicians in 1890s London engage in a battle to create the ultimate illusion while sacrificing everything they have to outwit each other.

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson, Michael Caine

Votes: 1,441,412 | Gross: $53.09M

Another top film by Christopher Nolan. Nolan's masterfully woven story of mystery and rivalry between the two main characters will keep you avidly watching, right to it's surprising and quite bitter end. Both Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman are perfectly cast as the two magician. Another Nolan essential.

28. Logan (2017)

R | 137 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

77 Metascore

In a future where mutants are nearly extinct, an elderly and weary Logan leads a quiet life. But when Laura, a mutant child pursued by scientists, comes to him for help, he must get her to safety.

Director: James Mangold | Stars: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, Boyd Holbrook

Votes: 831,566 | Gross: $226.28M

A fitting ending for one of cinema's best adapted characters. Hugh Jackman was born to play Wolverine and the perfect marriage between character and actor is evident throughout his send off. A gritty and sobering film was needed for this complex and tortured character and director James Mangold delivered. Brilliantly composed, shot and performed (Patrick Stewart delivering one of his best performances) Logan is one of few 'comic book' films that has truly broken the mould.

29. Schindler's List (1993)

R | 195 min | Biography, Drama, History

95 Metascore

In German-occupied Poland during World War II, industrialist Oskar Schindler gradually becomes concerned for his Jewish workforce after witnessing their persecution by the Nazis.

Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Kingsley, Caroline Goodall

Votes: 1,451,024 | Gross: $96.90M

A hard hitting, yet wonderfully made Spielberg classic. Schindler's List is anything but easy viewing, with it's shockingly horrific yet realistic portrayal of the Holocaust. Yet this is a film everyone should watch. Ralph Fiennes expertly portrays Nazi Gerneral Amon Goeth with stunningly frightening realism, and Liam Neeson puts in his best ever performance in his transformative role as Oscar Schindler. Spielberg's best film.

30. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

PG | 115 min | Action, Adventure

86 Metascore

In 1936, archaeologist and adventurer Indiana Jones is hired by the U.S. government to find the Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis can obtain its awesome powers.

Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Harrison Ford, Karen Allen, Paul Freeman, John Rhys-Davies

Votes: 1,037,002 | Gross: $248.16M

Spielberg again hits it out of the park with Raiders of the Lost Ark, introducing us to one of the greatest (and most iconic) movie heroes of all time. Harrison Ford delivers us a likeable and badass performance as the famous archaeologist. Everything just seems to fall in place for the first Indy flick, the plot, the direction, the set pieces and performances from supporting cast all fall in to place to make an iconic and exciting film, that can be watched countless times.

31. Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)

PG | 121 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

90 Metascore

Luke Skywalker joins forces with a Jedi Knight, a cocky pilot, a Wookiee and two droids to save the galaxy from the Empire's world-destroying battle station, while also attempting to rescue Princess Leia from the mysterious Darth Vader.

Director: George Lucas | Stars: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Alec Guinness

Votes: 1,449,808 | Gross: $322.74M

The movie that signalled the beginning of the biggest film franchise of all time. Spectacularly introduced the large brand of characters we now all know and love. It's hard to argue against any casting decision. Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and of course Harrison Ford as Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo were all perfect decisions. The cast of characters truly makes the film and the story crafted by George Lucas is universally appreciated and easy to get behind.

32. Se7en (1995)

R | 127 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

65 Metascore

Two detectives, a rookie and a veteran, hunt a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his motives.

Director: David Fincher | Stars: Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Kevin Spacey, Andrew Kevin Walker

Votes: 1,799,394 | Gross: $100.13M

Another excellent thriller from David Fincher. It's hard to divulge in to what's so good about Se7en without getting into spoiler territory, and it's imperative that you watch the film knowing as little about it as possible. Se7en creates a scary, bleak atmosphere throughout it's runtime, and it's story we'll keep you enthralled right until it's bitter end.

33. Interstellar (2014)

PG-13 | 169 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

74 Metascore

When Earth becomes uninhabitable in the future, a farmer and ex-NASA pilot, Joseph Cooper, is tasked to pilot a spacecraft, along with a team of researchers, to find a new planet for humans.

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Mackenzie Foy

Votes: 2,100,634 | Gross: $188.02M

Yet again another Nolan masterpiece. Interstellar had lofty expectations placed upon it, why wouldn't it with Nolan's previous track record? Although it may have disappointed some, I found Interstellar to be a thoroughly entertaining and thought-provoking adventure. There are no doubts the film is well made, with some of the set pieces being incredible spectacles. The films surprisingly emotional plot is wonderfully supported by brilliant performances all round, especially from Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain. The ending admittedly does fall a little flat in my opinion, but nevertheless the rest of the film makes up for it. It's another Nolan classic you must see.

34. Toy Story (1995)

G | 81 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

96 Metascore

A cowboy doll is profoundly threatened and jealous when a new spaceman action figure supplants him as top toy in a boy's bedroom.

Director: John Lasseter | Stars: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Don Rickles, Jim Varney

Votes: 1,068,719 | Gross: $191.80M

The film that catapulted the mega talented Pixar into stardom. Toy Story is endlessly re-watchable, it's jokes, touching story and characters simply never get old. It is iconic, Woody and Buzz are two of the most famous characters ever, and the film itself is a pop culture mainstay. I grew up with this film so I may be a little biased, but a lot of people share my views. If somehow you haven't seen it already watch it now.

35. American Beauty (1999)

R | 122 min | Drama

84 Metascore

A sexually frustrated suburban father has a mid-life crisis after becoming infatuated with his daughter's best friend.

Director: Sam Mendes | Stars: Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening, Thora Birch, Wes Bentley

Votes: 1,211,132 | Gross: $130.10M

Kevin Spacey knocks it out of the park yet again. In the film that won him an Oscar he smashes it out the park as the fed up Lester Burnham, as he delivers a powerhouse of a performance. It's not just Spacey, the whole cast performs magnificently throughout, and Skyfall director Sam Mendes does an excellent job balancing the several intricate sub plots. Don't be put off by the strange synopsis, watch American Beauty

36. Batman Begins (2005)

PG-13 | 140 min | Action, Crime, Drama

70 Metascore

After witnessing his parents' death, Bruce learns the art of fighting to confront injustice. When he returns to Gotham as Batman, he must stop a secret society that intends to destroy the city.

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Ken Watanabe, Liam Neeson

Votes: 1,578,740 | Gross: $206.85M

The first of Nolan's take on the famous comic book hero Batman, sets up the famous trilogy perfectly, and is the most underrated film of the three. In my opinion Begins is better than the Dark Knight Rises and not too far off the Dark Knight. Batman's origin story and first battles are excellently adapted here, with Nolan using shades of the Year One comic. Almost all are perfectly cast (Bale is a splendid pick for the titular character), and Cillian Murphy and Liam Neeson deliver excellently as adversaries Scarecrow and Ra's Al Ghul.

37. Spirited Away (2001)

PG | 125 min | Animation, Adventure, Family

96 Metascore

During her family's move to the suburbs, a sullen 10-year-old girl wanders into a world ruled by gods, witches and spirits, and where humans are changed into beasts.

Director: Hayao Miyazaki | Stars: Daveigh Chase, Suzanne Pleshette, Miyu Irino, Rumi Hiiragi

Votes: 849,641 | Gross: $10.06M

A wonderfully animated and realised world is what makes this the ultra talented Studio Ghibli's finest creation. The bathhouse is one of the medium's best settings, and it's cast of wonderful and weird characters, as well as it's entertaining and heartfelt plot places this as one of the greatest animated features of all time.

38. Stand by Me (1986)

R | 89 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

75 Metascore

A writer recounts a childhood journey with his friends to find the body of a missing boy.

Director: Rob Reiner | Stars: Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell

Votes: 441,697 | Gross: $52.29M

The greatest coming of age story. The 4 boy's journey to discover a dead body, many seem a little morbid, but the film excellently adapts Stephen King's story. Mixing a blend of humour, seriousness and regret. Very relatable film, with brilliant performances from the 4 young leads. Standout is River Phoenix, who sadly passed away a few years later.

39. Inside Out (I) (2015)

PG | 95 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

94 Metascore

After young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness - conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school.

Directors: Pete Docter, Ronnie Del Carmen | Stars: Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Lewis Black, Mindy Kaling

Votes: 785,572 | Gross: $356.46M

Mark my words, this film will be considered a classic among the likes of Toy Story in the years to come. Inside Out is a film for adults just as much as it is a film for kids. Pixar cleverly adapts several psychological concepts and presents them in a way that is fun and easy to understand, yet logical. It's got a great, emotional story about sadness and changes and is aided with a great voice cast who bring to life a wonderful set of characters.

40. Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)

As a new threat to the galaxy rises, Rey, a desert scavenger, and Finn, an ex-stormtrooper, must join Han Solo and Chewbacca to search for the one hope of restoring peace.

Director: J.J. Abrams | Stars: Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson

Votes: 973,811 | Gross: $936.66M

It would've been easy for JJ Abrams to slip up considering the amount of hype surrounding the long-awaited return of Luke Skywalker and co. Luckily the 7th instalment lives up to it's predecessors and more. Abrams had rejuvenated the franchise through the introduction of several new characters that will most definitely become just as iconic as Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Darth Vader. Abrams also handles the more nostalgic moments of the film perfectly. The film brings a mixture of emotions only a film the magnitude of Star Wars can, and is therefore another of the franchise that demands your attention.

Director: Gus Van Sant | Stars: Robin Williams, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Stellan Skarsgård

Votes: 1,068,291 | Gross: $138.43M

Robin Williams finest hour, a true master class in writing from Affleck and Damon both of whom give excellent performances as well. The plot is completely driven by Damon and Williams masterful performances, a truly emotional plot of potential and loss. The synopsis does not give the best representation of the film, you must watch it to understand it's true brilliance.

43. Heat (1995)

R | 170 min | Action, Crime, Drama

76 Metascore

A group of high-end professional thieves start to feel the heat from the LAPD when they unknowingly leave a verbal clue at their latest heist.

Director: Michael Mann | Stars: Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, Jon Voight

Votes: 719,513 | Gross: $67.44M

A perfectly executed and directed heist film, with a killer cast and great emotional story that comes from multiple perspectives. Truly is the best film of it's kind. The actual heists are realistically and intensely depicted. The crook vs cop rivalry between De Niro and Pacino well done, the two have a lot of on-screen chemistry.

44. The Avengers (2012)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Sci-Fi

69 Metascore

Earth's mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are going to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity.

Director: Joss Whedon | Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner

Votes: 1,459,528 | Gross: $623.28M

Marvel done an excellent job in the prelude to the Avengers creating an extensive shared universe between their numerous properties. But what's even more impressive is that Joss Whedon managed to balance the characters and create the perfect Avengers movie. All the heroes are well cast, RDJ is as good as ever as Tony Stark, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth are perfect as Captain America and Thor respectively, and Mark Ruffalo steals the show as Bruce Banner. Tom Hiddlestone is wonderful as the groups first adversary Loki. The action sequences are great, and so is the slightly comedic theme of the film, not taking itself too seriously.

45. American History X (1998)

62 Metascore

Living a life marked by violence, neo-Nazi Derek finally goes to prison after killing two black youths. Upon his release, Derek vows to change; he hopes to prevent his brother, Danny, who idolizes Derek, from following in his footsteps.

Director: Tony Kaye | Stars: Edward Norton, Edward Furlong, Beverly D'Angelo, Jennifer Lien

Votes: 1,186,439 | Gross: $6.72M

An extremely powerful and brilliantly directed film, that is sure to leave in a state of shock from it's sudden and brutal ending. Rightly praised for it's visual style, which lends itself to the bleak storyline that is wonderfully carried by performances from Edward Norton and Edward Furlong. It conveys a strong message about the consequences and realities of racism and discrimination in society.

46. Django Unchained (2012)

81 Metascore

With the help of a German bounty-hunter, a freed slave sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal plantation owner in Mississippi.

Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington

Votes: 1,695,525 | Gross: $162.81M

Tarantino's first foray into the world of Westerns left us with the brilliant Django Unchained, which has reminded us of Tarantino's considerable directing versatility. Django has all the famous director's trademarks, lots of blood, another smartly written script (with lots of swearing), a brilliant cast of characters, and another brilliant Christoph Waltz performance.

47. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

PG-13 | 121 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

76 Metascore

A group of intergalactic criminals must pull together to stop a fanatical warrior with plans to purge the universe.

Director: James Gunn | Stars: Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana

Votes: 1,273,516 | Gross: $333.18M

A surprising film to the many, not many predicted that Guardians of the Galaxy would be as good as it was. Credit must be given to director James Gunn, who managed to make this obscure Marvel property into something special. Every one of the protagonists feels unique and likeable, which is helped by some brilliant casting decisions. The story ties well into the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe without relying on these links too much to engage audiences. A brilliant soundtrack to accompany this. Cannot wait for Volume 2.

48. Whiplash (2014)

R | 106 min | Drama, Music

89 Metascore

A promising young drummer enrolls at a cut-throat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are mentored by an instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student's potential.

Director: Damien Chazelle | Stars: Miles Teller, J.K. Simmons, Melissa Benoist, Paul Reiser

Votes: 989,742 | Gross: $13.09M

A relatively underrated flick, anyone who has seen Whiplash will surely recommend it. Although a rather small-scale film compared to the others on this list Whiplash completely nails the direction it was going for. A film with seemingly unending tension, which is supported by an underrated performance from lead Miles Teller and a career-best performance from JK Simmons. The performances of these two are incredibly important for the film as it mainly concentrates on the relationship between student and teacher. A well paced, well directed must-see for movie and music fans alike.

49. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)

R | 133 min | Drama

84 Metascore

In the Fall of 1963, a Korean War veteran and criminal pleads insanity and is admitted to a mental institution, where he rallies up the scared patients against the tyrannical nurse.

Director: Milos Forman | Stars: Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher, Michael Berryman, Peter Brocco

Votes: 1,072,522 | Gross: $112.00M

In my opinion, this film contains film legend Jack Nicholson's greatest ever performance. A beautifully written/directed film with a brilliant large ensemble cast, which means Nicholson isn't the only star here. Particularly Louise Fletcher, who plays Nurse Ratched, puts in a brilliant performance as a twisted and manipulative character. Conveys a strong message to this day about the stigma associated with mental illness and the inefficiency of some establishments like the ones in the film.

50. The Lion King (1994)

Directors: Roger Allers, Rob Minkoff | Stars: Matthew Broderick, Jeremy Irons, James Earl Jones, Whoopi Goldberg

Votes: 1,142,528 | Gross: $422.78M

The best original Disney animated film. The film is obviously wonderfully animated with a seemingly perfect choice of voice cast. A great original score with some of the most iconic (and catchy) songs in recent film history. Will stand the test of time as one of the greatest animated films ever.

51. Casino Royale (2006)

PG-13 | 144 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

80 Metascore

After earning 00 status and a licence to kill, secret agent James Bond sets out on his first mission as 007. Bond must defeat a private banker funding terrorists in a high-stakes game of poker at Casino Royale, Montenegro.

Director: Martin Campbell | Stars: Daniel Craig, Eva Green, Judi Dench, Jeffrey Wright

Votes: 694,657 | Gross: $167.45M

Revolutionised Bond and seamlessly introduced the series to a more gritty serious era. Casino Royale, in my opinion, is the best Bond film. Not only did it manage to reinvigorate the franchise, it quite simply stands as one of my favourite action movies. The action sequences, especially the opening, are brilliantly directed but are not often enough to over-dilute the film. Despite the doubts, Craig is now considered one the best as Bond, and Eva Green does a magnificent job as Vesper Lynd one of the greatest Bond girls. A tense and gripping plot with several nods and references to 007's rich history, and all in all a brilliant origin story. If only the follow ups could've have been this good.

52. WALL·E (2008)

G | 98 min | Animation, Adventure, Family

95 Metascore

In the distant future, a small waste-collecting robot inadvertently embarks on a space journey that will ultimately decide the fate of mankind.

Director: Andrew Stanton | Stars: Ben Burtt, Elissa Knight, Jeff Garlin, Fred Willard

Votes: 1,200,648 | Gross: $223.81M

Probably Pixar's most ambitious film, and they yet again delivered the goods. The first section of the film is essentially wordless so credit must go to the filmmakers for managing to craft another brilliant plot with no dialogue. At this point though, this is unsurprising. Pixar consistently manages to crank out classic after classic film, that appeal to both children and adult alike. Wall-E, like the others, contains a wonderfully animated, entertaining and relatable plot, introducing a cast of memorable characters.

53. L.A. Confidential (1997)

R | 138 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

As corruption grows in 1950s Los Angeles, three policemen - one strait-laced, one brutal, and one sleazy - investigate a series of murders with their own brand of justice.

Director: Curtis Hanson | Stars: Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, Kim Basinger

Votes: 617,907 | Gross: $64.62M

A fantastically crafted and twisting plot, paired with a wonderfully written screenplay and a perfectly cast show of stars creates one of the most underrated films of the 1990's. It's fast paced nature means it is a rare blend of a critics favourite and a perfect popcorn flick. The setting is a character in itself, with director Curtis Hanson bringing 1950's Los Angeles to life.

54. Finding Nemo (2003)

Votes: 1,113,577 | Gross: $380.84M

Another Pixar classic. A favourite of my childhood, and although it doesn't quite reach the heights of some of their best work it still remains one of the finest and most popular animated films to date. Its plot is simple but captivating nonetheless and is brought alive through meticulous character crafting and fantastic voiceover work. Plenty of memorable moments, and another Pixar film you must watch.

55. The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)

PG-13 | 115 min | Action, Mystery, Thriller

85 Metascore

Jason Bourne dodges a ruthless C.I.A. official and his Agents from a new assassination program while searching for the origins of his life as a trained killer.

Director: Paul Greengrass | Stars: Matt Damon, Edgar Ramírez, Joan Allen, Julia Stiles

Votes: 658,300 | Gross: $227.47M

A fantastic conclusion to one of the most underrated film franchises in recent memory. Matt Damon continues to exude a badass aura no one expected of him when cast as Jason Bourne. The stakes were raised in terms of set pieces, chases and fight scenes in what was presumed to be Damon and Greengrass' last outing, and this makes for a thrilling movie. In terms of story, Ultimatum delivers a satisfying conclusion that makes it a worthy finale in the trilogy.

56. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

PG-13 | 164 min | Action, Drama, Thriller

78 Metascore

Eight years after the Joker's reign of chaos, Batman is coerced out of exile with the assistance of the mysterious Selina Kyle in order to defend Gotham City from the vicious guerrilla terrorist Bane.

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman

Votes: 1,827,669 | Gross: $448.14M

The third of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, is in my opinion the weakest of the three. Not that that is an insult, considering it's predecessors. Nolan again nails the gritty realistic theme he has built up with the previous films, and creates a good yet slightly predictable story. Good turns from Bale and the rest of the supporting cast, even if Tom Hardy's Bane does slightly underwhelm.
