A certain type of cinematography, music, acting, straight forward storytelling and adult theme help contribute to it. You don't get as engrossed into the characters but more into the plot. Characters often have no backstory
Atmospheric music rather than catchy, often wide angles shot in widescreen format. Straight forward acting and plot. Good acting is nessasary, but these films aren't the vehicals for oscar nominations. Camera work is often stellar, but story focused and not self serving. Lighting is great but not artsy.

A lot of people can't put their finger on why overall they didn't like a film besides bad acting and story. This is a perfect example of how a film with the same exact script and music can come out with a completely different tone with a new director. Just compare the french film, La Femme Nikita to the remake, Point of No Return, the "look," acting, choice of actors, camera movement, filming locations all ruin La Femme Nikita's raw beautiful tone. This is a perfect example of what "raw" means.
